Kyocera VP-210, the first camera phone in history
Kyocera VP-120: Today we take for granted that we can take relatively good pictures with our mobile phones. These incorporate increasingly sophisticated cameras and some manufacturers are even taking the first steps to place the front sensor below the screen . However, two decades ago this feature was a real novelty.
In 1999, the world's first camera mobile phone launch. It was the Kyocera VP-210. A terminal that, like many other models. Was only sold in Japan. The device featured a 0.11-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 5-centimeter (2-inch) reflective TFT LCD screen capable of displaying 65,000 colors.
Kyocera VP-210: The first with a camera and front!
In fact, we can see in the images is that it was a front camera. Of ocurse, it's internal storage space (and the only one available). Allowed a maximum of 20 JPEG images. Which could be sent by email. Also, the mobile phone could make video calls.
After all, Kyocera marketing also explained benefits of the video call system. "If a builder takes this phone to a construction site then they can show how the place is. Of course, video calls worked at only 2 frames per second. And it's operator DDI Pocket (now Ymobile) charged additional charges for data usage.
It also used the PHS mobile network (mainly available in Japan, China and Taiwan) whose antennas had a maximum range of hundreds of meters, as opposed to the range of kilometers of CDMA and GSM technologies.
Kyocera VP-210 Limited, but at the same time advanced for its time
At that time mobile phones only allowed voice calls and, in some cases, SMS, but Kyocera wanted to add one more functionality: to communicate with another person by seeing their face on the screen. Thus, the company worked for two years with its research and development team to bring the VP-210 to life.
However, the phone was not as successful as expected. Such as the fact that it was more expensive than the average of the time (it cost 40,000 yen. About 325 US dollars ) and it arrived at a time when the size of the components had not been reduced so much. For what its dimensions and weight were generous (140x54x29 mm and 165 g).
In June 2000, Samsung launched the SCH-V200 (on the left in the image above) in South Korea , with a 0.35 MP camera. In November of the same year, Sharp did the same in Japan with the J-SH04 , with a 0.11 MP sensor (on the right).
Kyocera VP-210: The truth is that mobile phone cameras have been improving considerably over time, an evolution that has caused a strong change in the industry and in consumers. Statista data makes it clear : digital camera sales fell 87% between 2010 and 2019.
nowadays We have ambitious terminals when it comes to photography. Among the best that we have been able to test this year is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra , which has four rear cameras and a laser sensor. iPhone 13 Pro incorporates three rear cameras and the support of computational photography.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Rumors and News: Release Date, Cameras, Pricing, and More
Samsung's current flagship lineup includes the Galaxy S20 phones, the stylus-enhanced Note 20 devices, and the surprise midrange Galaxy S20 FE. But a new year is upon us, which means smartphone refreshes. Here's what Samsung has up its sleeve for 2021, according to reports.
How Many Galaxy S21 Models Will Be Announced?
Samsung has remained mum on its next-gen flagships, but a regulatory filing in Brazil may hold some clues. A document found in the Agência Nacional de Telecommunicações database appears to show that Samsung will release three phones in the near future. Though they're listed by model number, the phones will likely be called the Samsung Galaxy S21, Samsung Galaxy S21+, and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The Galaxy S21 has been completely redesigned, but even if you're a fan of the Samsung Galaxy S20's design, there's a lot to love in the changes. The Galaxy S21 and S21+ will reportedly have a flat display and plastic body with an aluminum frame, part of which will wrap around the top of the phone to house the camera module.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra sports a curved display and glass body. It has the same camera module design as its less expensive counterparts, though that module may be slightly larger to accommodate the extra camera sensors.
The Galaxy S21 trio will also have matte displays and several color options for the housing. Android Police reports the Galaxy S21 will be available in violet, pink, gray, and white. Expect to see the S21+ in black, violet, and silver and the S21 Ultra in black and silver.
What Hardware Does the Galaxy S21 Have?
Each year, Samsung packs its Galaxy S series phones with top-of-the-line hardware, and this year will be no different.
The Galaxy S20 will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset in the US. Europe and the majority of the globe will likely get the S21 with Samsung's Exynos 2100 SoC.
On paper, Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset looks similar to its predecessor, but there are some significant changes. It's Qualcomm's first 5nm chipset, which will greatly improve efficiency over previous 7nm chipsets such as the Snapdragon 865.
The Snapdragon 888 is also Qualcomm's first flagship processor with three different types of core. It features a Cortex-X1 CPU high-performance core, along with three Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. This core configuration, along with updated machine learning processors, should make the Snapdragon 888 the most powerful and energy-efficient Intel chipset to date.
Details are scarce on storage and RAM configurations, but we can make some predictions based on specs from Samsung's past flagships and its current manufacturing schedule.
We believe the Samsung Galaxy S21 will be available in two different storage configurations. Samsung will offer an entry-level model with 128GB of storage (with the option to upgrade to 256GB) and 12GB of RAM.
You'll likely have three options when it comes to the Galaxy S21+: a 128GB/12GB base model, along with 256GB/12GB and 512GB/12GB upgrades.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra will be the most powerful of the bunch. It will be available in 128GB/16GB and 512GB/16GB configurations.
Again, these are just predictions based on Samsung's manufacturing processes and past Galaxy S models. Samsung will likely want some parity between models, and right now it is manufacturing UFS 3.1 storage for flagships in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations.
For RAM, the tech giant is currently manufacturing 12GB and 16GB, 10nm-process LPDDR5 RAM with peak transfer rates of 5,500Mb/s. There's a chance it may offer an 8GB LPDDR4X RAM (4,266Mb/s) on its entry-level Galaxy S21, but that would result in significantly reduced performance and energy efficiency—two essentials for 5G phones.
A slew of FCC documents also provide a little more detail about the S21 lineup. All three phones will support multi-band 5G. Bluetooth 5.1 will be on board as will NFC.
Not much will change in terms of battery capacity for the Galaxy S21 series. The Galaxy S21 will reportedly sport a 4,000mAh battery, and the S21 Ultra will reportedly have a 5,000mAh battery—the same as their predecessors. The S21+ is likely to get a slight bump to 4,800mAh from the 4,500mAh battery found on the current S20+.
Samsung teased Apple for not shipping a power adapter with its iPhone 12 models, but now appears poised to follow suit. A Brazilian regulatory filing states the phones will not be marketed with power supplies or headphones. The same filing suggests Samsung will sell a 25W adapter for fast charging. All three phones will have wireless charging and wireless powershare.
How Big Is the Samsung Galaxy S21's Screen?
For years, Samsung has relied on gorgeous AMOLED displays for its Galaxy S flagships. The upcoming Galaxy S21 models, however, will reportedly use a different display technology, according to Android Police, which released extensive details about the phones in November, and has a pretty solid track record with leaks.
Reportedly, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21+ will sport flat FHD+ LTPS displays with 120Hz refresh rates. The S20's display will be 6.2 inches on the diagonal, while the S21+ will have a 6.7-inch screen. We believe these phones will use an LTPS-OLED process as opposed to traditional LTPS LCDs, since Samsung has long used AMOLED panels in most of its flagships.
The S21 Ultra will have the largest display at 6.8 inches. It's also the only phone in the bunch to have the curved WQHD+ LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which was introduced on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
In addition to the updated displays, there are a few other screen-related treats reportedly on board. According to Twitter leaker Ice Universe, the S21 trio will have an improved in-display fingerprint sensor that's both larger and faster; this may be Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Max sensor, though it has yet to be confirmed.
Finally, it looks like the S21 Ultra will support Samsung's S Pen, though it will not have a built-in place to store it. Phone Arena reports Samsung will offer the S Pen as a separate SKU along with different cases for storage.
How Many Cameras Does the Galaxy 21 Have?
Samsung's Galaxy flagships have long been known for having some of the best smartphone cameras on the market, and the S21 lineup looks like it will continue the tradition.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21+ are rumored to have a triple camera module with 12MP primary and ultrawide lenses. There's also a 64MP telephoto lens on board.
The S20 Ultra will pack the most sophisticated camera stack of the bunch. It will likely have an improved 108MP primary lens along with a 12MP ultrawide lens. The primary lens is reportedly Samsung's new ISOCELL M3 sensor, which has better light sensitivity for low-light photos. There are also two 10MP sensors in the mix, capable of 3x and 10x optical zoom, respectively. Laser autofocus is also on board—an essential addition since the Galaxy S20 Ultra had significant problems with image pulsing and focus lock that were never fully corrected.
The other major change this year is the actual camera stack design. Instead of the big bump found on the Galaxy S20 models, the new Galaxy S21 smartphones will be almost flush with the body of the phone.
How Much Does the Samsung Galaxy S21 Cost?
When Samsung announced its Galaxy S20 series in early 2020, the world was a very different place. Though flagship demand was already sagging, Samsung launched its most expensive phones to date. It positioned the Galaxy S series as its ultra-premium brand while expanding its Galaxy A portfolio for more budget and midrange options.
With the Galaxy S21 trio, it appears Samsung plans to pull on the reins a bit. According to Korean tech site SamMobile, all three phones will be less expensive than their predecessors. The Galaxy S21 will reportedly retail for $849 to $899, while the Galaxy S21+ will hit store shelves with a $1,049 to $1,099 price tag. The S21 Ultra will reportedly start at $1,249.
It's worth noting that all the pricing rumors come from a single source. SamMobile also states these figures are merely under consideration by Samsung. Long story short: take these prices with a grain of salt.
When Is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Coming Out?
For the past several years, Samsung has announced its Galaxy flagships in February. This year, it appears we may be in for an early surprise.
After speaking with Samsung's mobile experience store in India, Android Authority reports that the Galaxy S21 trio will be announced globally on Jan. 14. The store is already accepting preorders for the next-gen flagship, which will reportedly be available on Jan. 29.
Of course, nothing is set in stone yet, though we're fairly confident the announcement date is correct. There's a chance that Samsung may stagger release by region, but we'd still expect to see Galaxy S21 models on sale in the US within a few weeks after the company's announcement.
If you can't wait until January and need a Samsung phone right now, it's worth taking a look at Samsung's best-selling Galaxy S20 FE. If you're looking for top-of-the-line hardware, here's how to choose among the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra.

Vivo U20 Review

Vivo brought the Vivo U10 in India in late September to compete with Xiaomi and Realme at the budget end of the market. The Vivo U10 is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor as the Redmi Note 8 and the Realme 5. With the competition churning out phones at such a high rate, it was time for Vivo to push out an update, and now it has, with the Vivo U20. The naming clearly suggests that this is a higher-end model than the Vivo U10, and we are expecting this smartphone to keep the competition in the market alive.
Equipped with a powerful Snapdragon 675 SoC, this phone could have an edge over its competition. Will this be enough to sway your choice in its direction? We put the Vivo U20 to the test to find out.
Vivo U20 Design
When we got our hands on the Vivo U10 (Review) we had pointed out that it was boxy and bulky. The new Vivo U20 isn’t a whole lot different, as it weighs 193g and is 8.9mm thick. We think that some people will find it too unwieldy for daily use. The display has grown in size, and the IPS LCD panel on the Vivo U20 measures 6.53 inches. It has thin bezels on the sides and Vivo claims a screen-to-body ratio of 90.3 percent. We found the display bright enough when outdoors, and it had decent viewing angles. Vivo has opted for a full-HD+ panel which is a welcome upgrade over the HD+ display of the U10.
The back of the Vivo U20 is flat but the sides are rounded which helps when holding it in the hand. Vivo has opted for a plastic back panel and frame. The back panel has a glossy finish which makes it a fingerprint magnet. We had to constantly wipe the back of the smartphone, and ultimately, we decided to use the bundled case to prevent smudges.

The glossy finish on the back of the Vivo U20 looks gorgeous but is a fingerprint magnet
We found the power and the volume buttons to be positioned a little too high for comfort, and they needed a bit of a shuffle to reach. The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is also positioned slightly too high for our liking. Vivo still uses a Micro-USB port on the U20, which should’ve been dropped in favour of USB Type-C. The 3.5mm headphone jack and the loudspeaker are placed on either side of the Micro-USB port, along with the primary microphone.
The smartphone packs a triple camera setup at the back, placed in a module which is slightly raised.
Vivo U20 specifications and software
The Vivo U20 does boast of some impressive hardware, with the highlight being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC. This is the same processor that powered the Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review) which was launched earlier this year at a higher price. It packs quite a punch, and people looking to play games and multitask should be able to do so on the Vivo U20 without any issues. The competition at this price level, including the Realme 5 (Review), and the Redmi Note 8 (Review), use the relatively less powerful Snapdragon 665 SoC.
Vivo has matched this SoC with 4GB or 6GB of RAM, while storage is 64GB for both variants. Surprisingly, Vivo offers UFS 2.1 storage which helps while transferring files to and from the smartphones. Storage is expandable by upto 256GB using a microSD card.
Vivo has priced the base 4GB RAM variant at Rs. 10,990 while the 6GB RAM variant is priced at Rs. 11,990. You also get two colour options to choose from, Racing Black and Blaze Blue. We had the Racing Black variant for this review, which we liked. If you prefer gradient finishes, then Blaze Blue is the one for you.

The Vivo U20 gets a full-HD+ display with a waterdrop notch
Connectivity options on the Vivo U20 include Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi, four satellite navigation systems, and FM Radio. Vivo has packed a 5,000mAh battery into the U20, and supplies an 18W Dual-Engine fast charger in the box.
Vivo ships the U20 with Funtouch OS 9.2 running on top of Android 9 Pie. There is a lot of preinstalled bloatware. You get apps such as EasyShare, GameCenter, Gaana, Amazon Shopping, Helo, Dailyhunt, Opera, Facebook, WhatsApp, WPS office and one called iManager. Some of them are super spammy with notifications, and it would be better to simply uninstall them.
Funtouch OS requires you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen for the quick toggles which is the exact opposite of the action for every other Android smartphone. This can get annoying and confusing for the user. Vivo has baked in a few other customisations as well. Users can change the UI theme as well as the animations for charging and face recognition.
Vivo’s smart assistant Jovi is also built into the smartphone. It can help you recognise products you point the camera at, and reminds you to drink water throughout the day. There is Google’s Digital Wellbeing as well as parental controls, which help you manage how you spend your time on the smartphone. Smart features such as raise-to-wake, and the ability to quickly launch apps by drawing alphabets on the lock screen, are also available.
Vivo offers a Motorbike mode which rejects all incoming calls when you are in motion, and sends an SMS automatically to callers.

The Vivo U20 runs Funtouch OS on top of Android 9 Pie
The Ultra Game mode which is filled with feature such as off-screen Autoplay which lets a game run even with the display switched off. You can block notifications and answer calls automatically in hands-free mode to minimise interruptions when you’re playing games. If you don’t want to be bothered, it can reject calls right away instead. You can customise these options for each game individually.
This mode also has a “sound localisation training center”, and this is the first time we are seeing such a thing on a smartphone. This feature is for PUBG Mobile and it trains you to recognise sounds from the game in an attempt to improve your performance. If you are a serious gamer you might find it useful, whereas casual gamers can ignore it.
Vivo U20 performance and battery life
The Vivo U20 managed to grab our attention for its aggressive price and powerful processor. The Snapdragon 675 debuted with the Redmi Note 7 Pro, and when launched it was the most powerful processor in a smartphone priced under Rs. 15,000 and now it has made its way to a lower budget tier. We did not notice any lag while scrolling through the Vivo U20’s UI, or any stutters when switching between multiple apps. Since we had the top-end 6GB RAM variant, we did not face any issues while multitasking either, and the phone could seamlessly switch between multiple apps.
The U20 was quick to unlock using the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as well as the face unlock feature. While the display is not as punchy as the AMOLED panels on some other phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy M30s (Review), it does get bright enough when outdoors. The speaker wasn’t loud though and also sounded tinny.

There is support for dual 4G VoLTE as well as a dedicated microSD card slot.
Our benchmark tests gave us a fair idea as to how the Vivo U20 with its Snapdragon 675 processor fares against the Redmi Note 8 and the Realme 5s, which are powered by the Snapdragon 665. The Vivo U20 scored 210,249 in AnTuTu Benchmark v8, which is higher than the 169,832 scored by the Redmi Note 8 and 167,487 scored by the Realme 5s. The U20 also scored 504 and 1,638 in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests respectively. We also saw 42fps and 7.8fps in GFXBench’s T-Rex and Car Chase benchmarks respectively.
We played PUBG Mobile on the Vivo U20, which defaulted to the High preset with graphics set to HD and the frame rate set to High. We did not notice any issues at these settings and could play the game well. Just like we’ve experienced with other phones powered by the Snapdragon 675, the Vivo U20 did get slightly warm to the touch after gaming for around 20 minutes. We also noticed a battery drop of 5 percent over the same duration.
Battery life for the Vivo U20 is quite good, and this smartphone can last over a day and a half easily on a single charge. With our usage which consisted of an active WhatsApp account, playing PUBG Mobile, taking a few camera samples, and using GPS for navigation, we were left with 45 percent at the end of 24 hours. In our HD video loop test, the smartphone managed 14 hours and 59 minutes.
Charging the 5,000mAh battery does not take long. The supplied fast charger got us up to 33 percent in half an hour and 67 percent in an hour. A full charge will take around two hours.
Vivo U20 cameras
Vivo has gone with a triple camera setup for the U20, which consists of a 16-megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX499 sensor, an 8-megapixel super-wide-angle camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. For selfies, it has a 16-megapixel camera. The camera application is similar to what we have seen on recent Vivo smartphones. It has Night, Portrait, Pano, Live Photo, Pro, AR Stickers, and Time-Lapse modes to shoot with. It has a Jovi feature as well, which uses Vivo’s Jovi assistant to identify what the camera is pointed towards and find e-commerce listings for similar products.
There are quick toggles for HDR, and different filters which can be applied before taking a shot. The camera app offers a toggle for 2x zoom which the phone does digitally. There are separate toggles to switch to the wide-angle and super macro cameras which we feel should have been integrated better.
The Vivo U20 is quick to lock focus and set the exposure right, it also enables HDR automatically when shooting in bright environments. Photos taken with the Vivo U20 looked good, but did not have the best details. This was evident on zooming in to them, and we could see slightly grainy output. The wide-angle-camera does deliver a wider field of view but we could see distortion at the edges, and the sensor failed to capture details.

Photos shot using primary (above) and wide-angle (below) cameras on the Vivo U20
Close-up shots fared better, as the phone managed good detail and a natural depth of field between the subject and the background. Portraits had good edge detection and the U20 blurred the background correctly, but you don’t get the option to set the level of blur in this mode. There is a separate Bokeh mode that lets you control this, and we think these two should have been combined.

Close-up shot using the Vivo U20 (tap to see full-sized image)
Low-light camera performance isn’t great. The Vivo U20 missed out on details and delivered grainy output. Switching to Night mode did result in brighter images but they weren’t significantly better. The phone keeps the shutter open for longer, so you will need to be steady while taking a shot in this mode. The overall quality of the cameras was nowhere near the best we’ve seen in this price range.

Photos click without and with night mode (tap to see full-sized image)

Selfies taken with the Vivo U20 (tap to see full-sized image)
Selfies shot indoors were also below average in quality and you will notice grain on zooming in. It’s best to limit these selfies to casual social media sharing.
Video recording maxes out at 4K for the primary camera and 1080p for the selfie shooter. We found video stabilisation to be adequate when shooting in the day, but focusing speed could have been better. In low light, there was a significant shimmer effect which was also visible in the viewfinder while shooting.
Verdict
Vivo stirred up the competition when it launched the U10 in the sub-Rs. 10,000 market and the company is repeating that at a slightly more premium positioning with the Vivo U20. This new smartphone packs in powerful hardware and a big battery at an aggressive price. That said, the U20 isn’t a perfect all-rounder; the cameras did leave us wanting.
If you are looking for a device primarily for gaming then the Vivo U20 should be pretty high on your shortlist. You could also consider the Realme 5s and the Redmi Note 8 (Review) as possible alternatives to the Vivo U20.

Haylou Solar review – a hidden smart wearable gem
Introduction
Here’s the quick version of what the Haylou Solar is – the Xiaomi Mi Band functionality with even better battery life, traditional watch styling and a big round display for around 20. Sounds intriguing? Read on then to see how well it all works.
The Haylou Solar uses an LCD rather than an OLED panel so an always-on display feature is out of the question, so even in that you have feature parity with the Mi Band. Also, despite what the name may lead you to believe there’s no Solar charging of any sort here.
Haylou Solar (Haylou LS05) specs
Body: 45.3 x 11.4, 54g, 22mm. standard strap; IP68; Metal frame, metal button, plastic back
Display: 1.28″ LCD, 240 x 240 pixels (no AOD watchface)
OS: Proprietary; Support for Android 4.4 and above, iOS 8.0 and above
Battery: 340mAh (30 days typical use, around 15 days with heart rate monitoring)
Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0 + BLE
Misc: Ultra-low dynamic optical heart rate sensor, accelerometer
We realize that Haylou is hardly a household name, so we looked into it. The Haylou brand, which, just like it sounds is derived from the homonym of the English word “hello”, is owned by Dongguan Liesheng Electronics Co., Ltd. The latter provides ODM solutions and also RnD, production and marketing capabilities for Bluetooth headsets and smart wearables.
As a startup, the company secured funding by Xiaomi and membership in the Xiaomi ecosystem. Currently, it is a bit hard to define the exact relationship between Xiaomi and Dongguan Liesheng Electronics, but it is known that the former is a major client of the latter. Hence, the similarities in features and UI between the Haylou Solar and Amazfit devices, like the GTR and T-Rex start to make sense, as well. Amazfit products come courtesy of the Huami subsidary – the guys behind the popular Xiaomi Mi Band family, but connections clearly run deep.
The good news is the traditional strong point of Amazfit products – battery life – has been carried over here to the Haylou Solar.
Design, materials and comfort
The Haylou Solar is hardly the best looking smartwatch, but as we established it’s more of a rival to the smartbands and among those the classic “watch” aesthetic are still the minority. At its price point the Haylou Solar’s metal body and overall feel really stand out. The metal case also adds a certain heft to the device that some might appreciate.
The decision to make the front glass flush with the metal bezel causes some anxiety. The official Haylou specs page does not mention any specific protective layer for the glass, which means scratches are likely to take away from its looks down the road.
The 1.28-inch LCD on the Haylou Solar looks perfectly fine indoors. Colors are vibrant and both text and UI elements are sharp, thanks to its 240 x 240-pixel resolution. Outdoor use sees it struggle to push the brightness high enough and you might have trouble reading it if you are sitting in the sun.
The top glass layer introduces some reflections and so does the small, but still present air gap between it and the actual panel. A fully-laminated solution would have helped things a bit, but that’s hardly feasible at this price point.
There are four brightness levels that you have to toggle manually as there is no luminance sensor for auto brightness. You either have to learn to live with a dimmer outdoor experience, unpleasantly bright UI during the night or develop the habit to adjust the brightness, as needed.
Haylou Solar also punches above its category in terms of comfort. A slim profile makes for a snug fit against the wrist, limiting the risk of accidental bumps and snags. The Solar’s plastic back side is relatively flat and remains comfortable even with a tighter strap position.
Speaking of the strap, it is a standard 22mm one that uses slightly bent, but otherwise sturdy studs. Replacing it with third-party options is a breeze and you have no shortage of options.
The factory silicon strap deserves praise beyond its standard attachment mechanism. While we aren’t exactly sure what the advertised “nano lightweight technology” means, in practice the band strikes a great balance between soft feel and sturdy structure. We expect it to last a long time seeing how it doesn’t show the slightest signs of wear in several weeks of constant use.
The Haylou Solar isn’t afraid of getting sweaty, dirty or wet, thanks to its IP68 rating. The official specs page feels confident in advertising it as a gadget you can comfortably leave on your wrist for all your activities, which clearly includes sweat and the occasional splash of water.
Features
Smart wearables come in many shapes and feature sets. The Solar isn’t a proper smartwatch, like the Apple Watch of the Samsung Watch with no support for third-party apps nor an accompanying ecosystem of software. As we said it’s more of a smart activity/sports tracker with functionality that can’t be expanded unless the maker does so with a firmware update.
Both approaches have their advantages because full on operating systems may be more versatily but is also more expensive to maintain and way more taxing on the battery. So if you manage to find a smart wearable that meets all of your needs you can get a far better deal.
A centerpiece in the Haylou Solar’s feature arsenal is tracking. The PPG sensor on its back can handle pulse, both on demand and regularly throughout the day, depending on your preference. In our tests, we found it to be about as accurate and reliable as the Xiaomi Mi Band 4, Amazfit GTR and Samsung Galaxy Watch.
Step counting is also about as reliable as one can expect from your average wearable. Cross-referencing its counter with an Amazfit GTR and the Samsung Health counter on a recent Samsung flagship phone typically gives variances of a couple of hundred steps or less.
Step counter accuracy
The distance and calorie numbers, provided alongside heart rate and step count are clearly calculated rather than measured as is the norm with simpler activity trackers. We appreciate the Apple-inspired visualization of these statistics with colored progress rings.
Armed with just a basic array of sensors and in the absence of GPS, the Haylou Solar can only do so much on its own, when it comes to actual Sports tracking. The watch does let you manually trigger one of 12 sports modes listed below.
The tracking itself includes duration, calories and a live heartrate monitor. There is no advanced logic here, like repetition or lap count. Probably a good thing too, since any such data would have to be estimated on the Haylou Solar and would be so inaccurate it will be virtually useless.
So starting a particular kind of workout, serves as a tagging mechanism for later data review. You can, actually track a few types of more sophisticated sport tracking with the Haylou companion app on the phone, using its GPS, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Notification forwarding is the other big feature for most smart wearables. Generally speaking, it’s currently in a bit of a “Wild west” state, since Android lacks a standardized way of hooking and accessing notifications. Every manufacturer handles this differently on a software level and the resulting experience can be vastly different.
Starting with the companion app, the settings menu is straightforward and easy to understand. It includes shortcuts to enable accessibility and notification permissions. Below that – a list of common apps, which suggests that the Haylou app has some custom handling code in place for some popular apps. You can also manually add any other app.
Notification settings in app
In practical terms, notification experience on the Haylou Solar is above average, but still a bit inconsistent. Notifications come through reliablyand quickly. Most common symbols are supported, including most emojis and Cyrillic text. Beyond that, the quality of the experience really varies from app to app. The name of the app almost always comes through. Its icon sometimes get lost and certain apps, like Viber simply have “null” as their notification body. These are just some idiosyncrasies from the particular way Haylou is capturing and passing on notifications.
Other noteworthy issues include the passing of progress notifications. The way Android apps create progress bars in a notification is to constantly create a new notification with the same ID as the existing one, to display a higher complete percentage. The Haylou app does not recognize this behavior on occasion and passes every single state of these progress notifications as an independent notification to the watch. The end result is constant vibration and flashing until the progress bar goes away. This can be mitigated by disabling certain notification channels on some apps, but is still annoying enough to be worth noting.
Of course, Haylou could address these issues in software, as well. Perhaps an added feature to not only subscribe to notifications on a per-app basis, but also on a notification-channel basis within each app. While at it, a setting to regulate the vibration of the watch would be appreciated. It is rather intense out of the box. We wouldn’t really count on too many companion app updates, though, given the relative obscurity of Haylou products.
Incoming calls get their own UI. It is on the simpler side on only includes a contact name or phone number, along with a hand-up button. Since the wearable lacks both a speaker and a microphone, taking a call from it is impossible. Still, a button to ignore the call and stop the vibration would have been a nice addition.
The Haylou Solar also offers sleep tracking. It is rather basic and only tracks your light sleep, deep sleep and total sleep time. Even so, it seems fairly accurate in recognizing when you go to bed and wake up. A bit surprising, since the sedentary reminder feature is rather inconsistent and sometimes fires a warning as you walk around.
Finishing-off the list of features, the Haylou Solar can also do remote music control. Just the basics – play, pause, next and previous song. You do get the name of the song and artist, which worked consistently with all of the music player apps we tried.
Weather forecast both looks and works great. The data is streamed-in from the connected phone. Graphics on the UI are beautiful and slick. Same goes for Breathing Training – a quick guided relaxation, of sorts. We can’t imagine many are going to actually use it. Stopwatch, Countdown and Find phone exhaust the list of small little extras.
We have also prepared a short UI tour video, for a better sense of the layout, animations speed and responsiveness. This includes the quick toggles bar, initiated by a swipe down, which we didn’t mention thus far.
Overall, we have few major gripes with the feature-set of the Haylou Solar and the way it is implemented in practice. There is the occasional rough edge, but all of the basics are well covered and you get a surprising amount of value for your money.
Battery life and charging
The Haylou Solar packs a 340mAh battery. That’s small in absolute terms, but still on the bigger end for a smart wearable. However, with such a small amount of juice hardware efficiency and clever software are crucial. We’ve already praised Huami’s highly-efficient custom hardware in the past. The Haylou Solar seems to be rocking something similar, if not identical, given the company’s relationship with Huami and Xiaomi, we already mentioned.
The officially advertised endurance figure of 30 days on a single charge is easily attainable in real-world use. This is a rare sight, even among activity trackers and puts the Haylou Solar in a special endurance league alongside very few other devices, like the Amazfit Bip and the Amazfit GTR. Of course, in the absence of an efficient OLED panel, the Haylou Solar had to give up AOD, among other things, to get over a month away from the wall, but it’s still impressive.
Using the heartrate sensor for 24-hour tracking does slash real-world endurance. However, in our tests, the dent was far less than 50%. We still managed to get around 20 days on a single charge, with the feature on. Of course, this number will also depend on the number of workouts and the amount of notifications you receive.
The Haylou Solar is charged through a proprietary magnetic attachment that snaps to the pair of pogo pins on the back of the watch. The bond is solid enough to not come loose on its own. Attaching the thing is also easy thanks to the magnets.
The charger takes a small current of just 500mAh at 5V, which means that you can plug it into pretty much any USB port. Charging start off rapidly. You can get from zero to 50% battery in about an hour and a half. After that, the charger slows down, presumably to protect the small battery. A full charge takes around three hours in total.
Smartphone companion app
The smart wearable companion app can often make or break a certain device, since it plays a major and often overlooked part in the overall experience. Surprisingly, despite its relative obscurity and sketchy initial appearance, the Haylou app is actually one of the better ones around.
The “sketchy” bit we are referring to mostly boils down to developer names and various texts in Chinese in the Play Store description of both Haylou apps. Out of the pair, you need to download Haylou Fit, as opposer to Haylou Sport. Thankfully, once you are past this initial hurdle and open the Haylou Fit app, it is all smooth sailing. First, you are greeted by a nifty, guided initial setup wizard for your personal profile and syncing the Haylou Solar.
Initial app setup
The setup process also includes detailed instructions on how to prevent your particular Android flavor from killing the app’s background activity. We found these explanations much clearer than those on Amazfit devices. And speaking of background services, it should be noted that unlike some companion app installs, like those for Samsung or Huawei smart wearables, the Haylou one is very light and only includes a single service and a single app. In contrast, getting Huawei health on your phone also means installing a huge number of various services and entire frameworks.
Background service instructions
The main UI of the app is very clean and well organized. You are greeted with a trio of quick statistic overviews for your steps, distance, calories, as well as heart rate and sleep history. In the top left corner – a small, weather widget that can open into a full, beautiful weather forecast UI. It’s all very simple and non-intrusive. And you can even slim-down the UI further be toggling off the heart rate and sleep widgets.
Main app interface
You can drill into sleep and heart rate data with a single click and by using well-organized historical graphs and data selectors.
Sleep data Heart rate data
Moving on to the next tab in the app, you get quick access sports tracking and historical data. This is where the logs from the Haylou Solar tracking end up, categorized accordingly. You can also start an activity session from this interface instead of the watch itself, in which case you also get to leverage the phone’s GPS module, when applicable, as well as some other advanced features, like a nifty voice assistant, played on connected headphones. You can also set targets for the current workout. A few basic activity types are added to the main UI by default and you can add-in or remove others from an additional menu.
Activity tracking and options
It is all very simple, easy to understand and pleasant to use. The only complaint we have with this implementation is that there is no way to trigger a full-featured, GPS-enabled activity session from the watch, without taking out your phone. Other than that, Haylou has designed a UX that manages to stand-out among competitors in the wearable niche. Color us surprised!
The same level of UI simplicity is applied to the next tab in the Haylou Fit app, as well. It houses all of the menus and options related to the Haylou Solar, or any other wearable that you might have synced with the app.
Device options
Everything is simple, well organized and easy to understand. In no small part thanks to the great level of English translation, which is not something to take for granted with products like the Haylou Solar.
Device options
The final Me tab has everything related to your personal profile. Also – links to brand-specific guides to ensure the Haylou background service stays alive and a collection of actually helpful troubleshooting articles.
Me tab options
Conclusion
Despite its relative obscurity and slightly confusing name, the Haylou Solar is actually very easy to sum up. It is a well-designed and crafted smart wearable, with a classic look, strong metal frame and solid build. The IP68 rating means you can wear it all the time, while the amazing 30-day battery life and full color LCD display complete a stylish yet potent modern watch replacement.
After spending some quality time with it, we can safely say that it’s a brilliantly executed attempt at a low-cost smart tracker. Software is simple and reliable and at just around EUR 20 it’s easily among the best deals around.

Huawei unveils the P30 and P30 Pro
Huawei unveiled its brand new flagship phone — the P30 and the P30 Pro — at a press conference today in Paris. In many ways, this year’s update is a continuation of the P20 series — but everything has been upgraded. I played with both devices for a bit; here’s my experience.
While Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has switched to a hole-punch design, Huawei is keeping the good old notch for its flagship device. But this year’s notch is a lot smaller. The company has switched from an iPhone X-like notch to a tiny little teardrop notch.
The P20 and P20 Pro were the last flagship phones to feature a fingerprint sensor below the display, on the front of the device. With the P30 series, Huawei is removing that odd-looking bezel and integrating the fingerprint sensor in the display.
The company could have used that opportunity to make the phones smaller. But Huawei opted for taller displays instead. The P20 and P20 Pro had 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch displays, respectively, with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The P30 and P30 Pro have gigantic 6.1-inch and 6.47-inch displays, respectively, with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
The P30 Pro is still narrower than the iPhone XR, but it won’t be for everyone. It definitely feels too big in my hand, for instance.
The industrial design of the P30 series is in line with the P20 series. The phones feature glass on the back with colorful gradients. The frame is made of aluminum. Overall, the devices feel slimmer on the edges thanks to curved back and front glass. The company has flattened the top and bottom edges of the devices as well. Everything feels solid in your hand.
The P30 and P30 Pro are now closer when it comes to features. They both have an OLED display with a 2340×1080 resolution for instance. You no longer have to choose between an LCD and an OLED display.
The two biggest differences you can spot is that the P30 Pro has a Samsung-style display, slightly curved on the sides — the P30 display is completely flat — and Huawei is bringing back the headphone jack, but only for the P30. It doesn’t really make sense to segment the lineup this way, but maybe Huawei considers you have enough money to buy wireless earbuds if you’re in the market for a P30 Pro.
Both devices come in five colors — Breathing Crystal, Amber Sunrise, Perl White, Black and Aurora. Amber Sunrise is a red to orange gradient color, Breathing Crystal is a white-to-purple gradient, Perl White is a white-to-slightly pink gradient, Aurora is a blue-to-turquoise gradient.
You’ll be able to buy the P30 for €799 ($900) with 128GB of storage and the P30 Pro for €999 ($1,130) for 128GB of storage — there are more expensive options for the P30 Pro with more storage. The phones will be available in Europe and Asia today, and probably won’t be released in the U.S.
Four camera sensors, because why not
When it comes to cameras, Huawei has always been one of the leading smartphone manufacturers. There are only four brands that ship cameras that perform so well — Apple, Samsung, Google and Huawei.
It’s going to be hard to comment on the quality of the photos after so little hands-on time, but the P30 Pro now features not one, not two, not three but f-o-u-r sensors on the back of the device.
The main camera is a 40 MP 27mm sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization.
There’s a 20 MP ultra-wide angle lens (16mm) with an f/2.2 aperture.
The 8 MP telephoto lens provides nearly 5x optical zoom compared to the main lens (125mm) with an f/3.4 aperture and optical image stabilization.
There’s a new time-of-flight sensor below the flash of the P30 Pro. The phone projects infrared light and captures the reflection with this new sensor.
Thanks to the new time-of-flight sensor, Huawei promises better bokeh effects with a new depth map. The company also combines the main camera sensor with the telephoto sensor to let you capture photos with a 10x zoom with a hybrid digital-optical zoom.
The telephoto lens uses a periscope design. It means that the sensor features a glass to beam the light at a right angle. Huawei uses that method to avoid making the phone too thick.
On the P30, the cameras are more or less the same, but a bit worse:
A 40 MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization.
A 16 MP ultra-wide angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture.
An 8 MP telephoto lens that should provide 3x optical zoom.
No time-of-flight sensor.
More than hardware specifications, Huawei says that software has been greatly improved to enhance the quality of your photos. In particular, night mode should be much better thanks to optical and software-enabled stabilization. HDR shots and portrait photos should look better too.
On the front of the device, the selfie camera sensor has been upgraded from 24 MP to 32 MP. And you can capture HDR and low-light photos from the front camera as well.
Below the surface
Huawei has upgraded its homemade system-on-a-chip with the Kirin 980 that you can find in the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. It runs Android Pie 9.1 with Huawei’s EMUI custom Android user interface.
In addition to 40W USB-C charging, Huawei is integrating wireless charging for the first time in the P series (up to 15W). The P30 Pro has a 4,200 mAh battery. You can also charge other devices with reverse wireless charging, just like on the Samsung Galaxy S10.
The P30 Pro is IP68 water and dust resistant while the P30 is IP53 resistant.
You won’t find a speaker grill at the top of the P30 Pro because the company has removed the speaker. Instead, Huawei is vibrating the screen in order to turn the screen into a tiny speaker for your calls.
A note on the Huawei FreeLace wireless earphones
Huawei is also launching new in-ear earbuds today. The FreeLace looks more or less like the BeatsX with a cord behind your neck. You can disconnect the cord and plug your wireless earphones directly into your smartphone to pair them — no Bluetooth pairing required.
That hidden USB-C port is also how you’re going to charge the earbuds. For five minutes of charge time you get four hours worth of playback. They’ll be available in four colors — Graphite Black, Amber Sunrise, Emerald Green and Moonlight Silver.
The earbuds are magnetic so you can wrap them around your neck. When you disconnect them, it automatically answers your calls, play your music. When you connect them again, it hangs up or pauses your music. The FreeLace earbuds will be a separate accessory for €99.

Four camera sensors, because why not
When it comes to cameras, Huawei has always been one of the leading smartphone manufacturers on this front.
There’s a 20MP ultra-wide angle lens (16mm) with an f/2.2 aperture.
And you can capture HDR and low light photos from the front camera as well.
You can disconnect the cord and plug your wireless earphones directly into your smartphone to pair them – no Bluetooth pairing required.
That hidden USB-C port is also how you’re going to charge the earbuds. For 5 minutes of charge time, you get 4 hours worth of playback. They’ll be available in four colors — Graphite Black, Amber Sunrise, Emerald Green and Moonlight Silver.
The earbuds are magnetic so you can wrap them around your neck. When you disconnect them, it automatically answers your calls, play your music. When you connect them again, it hangs up or pause your music. The FreeLace earbuds will be a separate accessory for €99.

Huawei unveils the P30 and P30 Pro
Huawei held a press conference today in Paris. And the company just unveiled its brand new flagship phone — the P30 and the P30 Pro. In many ways, this year’s update is a continuation of the P20 series — but everything has been upgraded. I played with both devices for a bit of time yesterday, here’s my experience.
The P20 and P20 Pro had 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch displays with a 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The P30 and P30 Pro have gigantic 6.1-inch and 6.47-inch displays with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
The P30 Pro is still narrower than the iPhone XR, but it won’t be for everyone. It definitely feels too big in my hand for instance.
The industrial design of the P30 series is in line with the P20 series. The phones feature a glass on the back with colorful gradients. The frame is made of aluminum. Overall, the devices feel slimmer on the edges thanks to curved back and front glasses. The company has flattened the top and bottom edges of the devices as well. Everything feels solid in your hand.
The P30 and P30 Pro are now closer when it comes to features. They both have an OLED display with a 2340*1080 resolution for instance. You no longer have to choose between an LCD and an OLED display.
The two biggest differences you can spot is that the P30 Pro has a Samsung-style display, slightly curved on the sides — the P30 displays is completely flat. Huawei is also bringing back the headphone jack, but only for the P30.
Of course, video calls worked at only 2 frames per second and it's operator DDI Pocket (now Ymobile) charged additional charges for data usage.
And this trend is expected to continue.
nowadays We have ambitious terminals when it comes to photography. Among the best that we have been able to test this year is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra , which has four rear cameras and a laser sensor. iPhone 13 Pro incorporates three rear cameras and the support of computational photography.
