I met him. His name was… Ulysses, some old world name. Apparently he didn’t like the fact me and my team was searching for nuclear warheads, taking old world weapons, and having commissary terminals lifted out of the Divide. He wounded a couple Legionnaires, but they were fine after I applied copious amounts of healing powder and a… stimpack to their wounds in the case of Galeus.

He has some dark bruises on his neck ever since I… incapacitated him during a heated confrontation.

Although the fact we’re searching and scavenging the Divide right now may be the reason why you can’t find any nuclear warheads to blow up, the weird helicopter noises and gunfire, or things to loot or weird road sign people and wildlife to kill.

The bright blue skies and calm waters of the estuary belie rough conditions at sea, and there is no sign of activity among the colourful fishing boats moored around the harbour of Cananéia, a sleepy fishing town 160 miles south of São Paulo.

On the wharf, however, a delivery of frozen fish from Uruguay has just arrived and a few men in white gumboots are busy unloading pallets of beheaded specimens labelled Galeorhinus galeus – school shark.

These thin grey fish will be kept in a cold store on shelves already stacked ceiling-high with carcasses of blue sharks, all awaiting processing and distribution to cities inland.

“Why do we work with shark?” says Helgo Muller, 53, the company manager. “Because people like it; it’s good and cheap protein. It doesn’t give you crazy profits, but it’s decent enough.”

Size: 60-80cm (23-31in)

Range & Habitat: Blackmouth catsharks can be found in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea. They live in deep water by the bottom, usually 650-3,300 feet down

Other: The blackmouth catshark is recognizable by its unique shape, fins, and spotted coloration. While they are typically found in deep water, in colder waters they tend to be found shallower.

Blacktip Sawtail Catshark(Galeus sauteri)

Daxi fishing port is a place of mixed emotions to me, rummaging through piles of bycatch to find deepsea species you wouldn't find elsewhere is what makes it significant to me. But look further and it'll remind you what this discovery stands for. Catsharks, houndsharks and hammerheads all carelessly piled on the floor, poking out of the carcass of other "undesired." If they're big enough they'd join eels, gunards and rockfish as they're packed into boxes and grind into fishmeal. And those that have yet to reach adequate sizes are discarded. Recently I collected 4 Galeus sauteri out of the waste pile separated from a catch of shrimp trawler at Daxi, they took up roughly 30% of the catch, and none were wanted or sold.

SOUPFIN SHARK

The soupfin shark, or Galeorhinus galeus, is a very sleek type of schooling shark. They can be found in schools of up to 50 sharks. They are found worldwide, found at depths of around 800 meters. They are Big Boys™, and grow to around 2 meters big.

They are opportunistic feeders, and eat in both open water and by the seabed.

These fish, sadly, are endangered as of currently, due to being overhunted.
