Many of the roads I bike and trails I hike don't have cell service, so a few years ago Beth got me this Garmin GPS Map 66i. It has a ton of a features including satellite messaging, weather, maps etc. In the intervening years the iPhone has introduced satellite SOS calling and I could use that if necessary, but the Garmin lets me send Beth a map link which updates every 10 minutes.
I've carried it hundreds of miles and it has accumulated some wear but dropping it in the garage cracked the screen. I chatted with Garmin support and they said it wasn't repairable and even though it is a few years old they offered a good discount on a refurbished unit.
The refurbished unit looks brand new. It takes a while to get it setup - hard to believe but downloading the maps takes 3.5 hours, even when syncing from my laptop.

I'm not a programmer but I have a feeling that things going "app based" or running on Android based platforms is causing way more problems than it solved. I'm told that they're easier to program and write stuff for than more refined purpose built software but this seems to lead to a quality drop across the board. Let me complain about the redundant GPS systems I use in my truck for a minute

The screen on the right is a brand new Rand Mcnally gps. The smaller one on the right is a 4 year old Garmin.
The Garmin is purpose built to be a GPS. I have no idea what it's specs are but they are enough to run the map program and reliably get me where I need to go. If I want to update the map, I plug it into my laptop and download the update. It's pretty simple. If I want it to factor in live traffic data, I can Bluetooth connect it to my phone but that's very much an option and not a requirement.
The Rand Mcnally is an android tablet with a map app that I'm pretty sure you can't get on the app store. The map is pretty good but it crashes more often than I'd like. It also needs a Wi-Fi connection to update the map and get live traffic, meaning that I'll need to leave my phone hotspot on all of the time or buy a separate hotspot and subscription for this thing to work the way I'd like it to.
I'm concerned that the Rand Mcnally isn't going to last as long as I'd like a $400 machine that does one (1) thing to given that it's brand new and already crashes sometimes while in use. I'm not sure if it's the App itself or the trimmed down version of android in the tablet but something isn't right here. The Garmin is slow to type on and the map's aesthetic is a little dated but it works. It actually fucking works. It reliably does what it says on the box and I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to use it indefinitely.
If you really want to get into it, the Qualcomm computer that came with my truck also has a nav system. It's from like 2006 and boy does it feel like it but it also works like new, I just don't have the patience to type addresses into it.
Anyway all of that to say I don't think optimized programming is dead, companies just have to be willing to pay for the development.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

🎒 Ultimate Backpacking Tips for Canada in 2025: What Every Traveller Must Know
Backpacking in Canada is a dream for outdoor lovers — from alpine treks in the Rockies to remote coastal trails in British Columbia and untouched forests in the Maritimes. But the wilderness can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful. Whether you’re planning a cross-country backpacking adventure or tackling one epic trail, this guide offers updated, expert-level backpacking tips for Canada in 2025, designed for international travellers, solo explorers, and adventure seekers alike.
🗺️ 1. Understand Canada’s Diverse Terrain and Climate
Canada is massive, and each region presents unique challenges:
Western Canada (BC & Alberta): Mountainous, colder at elevation, bear territory.
Central Canada (Ontario & Quebec): Forested, buggy in summer, humid.
Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland): Coastal, foggy, rugged cliffs.
Northern Canada (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut): Remote, tundra climate, requires extensive planning.
🧭 Plan accordingly: Weather can vary drastically — even in one day. Always check trail reports, weather warnings, and wildfire updates before your trip.
📋 2. Permits, Park Fees, and Backpacker Regulations
You can’t just “show up and hike” in most places.
National Parks: Require backcountry permits (e.g., Banff, Jasper, Yoho)
Provincial Parks: Each province has different rules (e.g., Ontario Parks vs BC Parks)
Some trails have lotteries or quotas (like the West Coast Trail)
Campfires, group sizes, and waste disposal are often regulated
💡 Pro tip: Visit Parks Canada or provincial park sites to book and check up-to-date rules.
🎒 3. Must-Have Gear for Backpacking in Canada
You’ll need more than just a backpack and a tent. A solid gear list should include:
Category Essentials Shelter 3-season tent, ground tarp, ultralight stakes Sleep system Sleeping bag (rated to 0°C or colder), insulated pad Cooking gear Lightweight stove, pot, long spoon, bear-hang kit or canister Navigation Compass, topographic map, offline GPS app, emergency beacon Clothing Quick-dry layers, down jacket, rain gear, hiking boots Miscellaneous Bug spray, sunblock, trekking poles, headlamp, first aid kit
🏕️ Backpacking Tip: Canada’s climate demands quality gear. Always choose gear tested for wet, cold, and wild conditions.
💧 4. Water Safety and Purification
Canada’s lakes and rivers look clean, but may contain Giardia or other pathogens.
Use squeeze filters, UV purifiers (like SteriPEN), or chemical tablets
Carry at least 2L of treated water — especially in remote zones
⚠️ Important: In alpine and coastal zones, freshwater may be limited. Always check if water sources are seasonal or dry in late summer.
🐻 5. Backpacking in Bear Country
Most of Canada is bear country — especially BC, Alberta, Yukon, and Ontario.
Carry bear spray at easy reach (e.g., on your belt or chest)
Never store food in your tent
Cook at least 100 meters from where you sleep
Use bear-proof containers or bear hangs (trees, cables, poles)
🐾 Learn to distinguish black bear vs grizzly tracks, and always check park-specific wildlife alerts.
🛶 6. Backpacking vs Canoe Tripping
In Canada, backpacking often overlaps with canoe routes, especially in places like:
Algonquin Provincial Park (Ontario)
La Vérendrye Reserve (Quebec)
Bowron Lakes Circuit (BC)
If combining hiking and paddling:
Use dry bags for gear
Get a canoe/kayak rental with proper permits
Be skilled in portaging (carrying your canoe between lakes)
🧑⚕️ 7. Medical Safety in Remote Regions
No cell signal in many areas; bring a Garmin InReach or SPOT device
Know basic wilderness first aid for sprains, bites, and blisters
Carry antihistamines, electrolyte tabs, and pain relief
Get travel insurance that includes medical evacuation, especially for visitors from abroad
🚑 Travel Tip: In the backcountry, rescue can take hours or days. Always leave your itinerary with someone.
🦟 8. Dealing With Mosquitoes, Blackflies, and Ticks
Summer (June–August) = bug season in much of Canada
Use DEET or picaridin repellent
Wear light, long-sleeved clothing and a bug net
In Eastern Canada, check daily for ticks (some carry Lyme disease)
🍽️ 9. Food Tips for Canadian Backpackers
Canada’s backcountry won’t have grocery stores — stock up before entering parks.
Pack freeze-dried meals, trail mix, nut butter, wraps, and protein bars
Bring compact cooking gear (e.g., Jetboil or MSR stove)
Carry extra rations in case of delays or bad weather
🥣 Meal Idea: Oatmeal, peanut butter, and powdered milk make a quick, high-calorie breakfast.
👣 10. Backpacking Culture & Etiquette in Canada
Say hi to other hikers — trail friendliness is common
Leave no trace: pack out all garbage, food scraps, and toilet paper
Use backcountry toilets or follow cathole rules (15–20cm deep, 70m from water)
Respect Indigenous lands and signage
🇨🇦 Tip: Learn a few phrases in French if backpacking in Quebec — it goes a long way in small communities.
✈️ Planning Your Backpacking Trip to Canada in 2025
🌄 Final Thoughts: Backpacking Canada Is Worth It
Canada’s wild beauty is unmatched — but it’s not a place for the unprepared. With the right planning, gear, and respect for nature, backpacking here will become one of your most transformative travel experiences. From mountain peaks to serene lakes and ancient forests, Canada is truly a backpacker’s paradise in 2025.

April 23rd, Oceano
Spent the past couple of days seeing my dad. Last night we made them a chicken Caesar salad for dinner.
This morning we departed the Santa Barbara elks for the Oceano Elks lodge. 101 is falling apart more each time we take it with more potholes and broken pavement.
Pulled into Oceano Elks around 1pm. Sunny with a cold wind today. Once settled, we went for a nice walk.
This evening we went to Ada's in Pismo Beach for dinner. Wind is picking up and now blowing sand with the gusts.
Here for 4 nights.
Lesson #2365 learned today: Never let the GPS do an update when you are leaving. I let the Garmin update this morning and it trashed the maps database then refused to route me. Had to reinstall the database after we arrived. Fortunately, I had reviewed the route yesterday so I knew the exit and for once Google matched the Garmin route.

The Ultimate Guide to Garmin Marine GPS and Minn Kota Trolling Motors
For any marine enthusiast, whether a professional angler, a weekend boater, or a long-distance sailor, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Navigation and boat control are two crucial aspects of a smooth and efficient boating experience. This is where Garmin marine GPS and Minn Kota trolling motors come in. These two brands are industry leaders, offering cutting-edge technology, reliability, and performance. In this guide, we’ll explore the importance of marine GPS and trolling motors and why Garmin and Minn Kota are the best choices for your boating adventures.
The Importance of a Marine GPS
A marine GPS is more than just a navigation tool. It provides real-time location tracking, ensures safety by preventing accidents, and enhances the overall boating experience. Here are a few reasons why having a marine GPS is essential:
Accurate Navigation: Whether you are navigating a lake, river, or open sea, a GPS ensures you reach your destination without getting lost.
Weather Updates: Many modern marine GPS devices provide real-time weather conditions to help you avoid storms and hazardous waters.
Fish Finding Capabilities: Some GPS models come equipped with sonar technology, helping anglers locate fish efficiently.
Route Planning & Waypoints: GPS allows you to mark waypoints for future reference and plan your route effectively.
Emergency Assistance: In case of an emergency, a GPS can send distress signals with your exact location, facilitating a quick rescue operation.
Why Choose Garmin Marine GPS?
Garmin has been a trusted name in GPS technology for decades, known for its innovation, precision, and durability. Here’s why Garmin GPS finders are preferred by marine enthusiasts:
1. Superior Mapping and Charting
Garmin marine GPS devices offer detailed and highly accurate maps. With features like BlueChart g3 coastal maps and LakeVü inland maps, you get high-resolution mapping with exceptional detail. These maps include underwater topography, marinas, depth contours, and more.
2. High-Quality Sonar Integration

5. Durability and Waterproof Design
Garmin marine GPS units are built to withstand harsh marine environments. They are waterproof and designed to handle extreme conditions such as saltwater exposure, heavy rains, and high temperatures.
6. Auto Guidance and Route Planning
Garmin offers Auto Guidance technology, which calculates the best route based on your boat’s specifications, water depth, and navigational hazards. This feature is incredibly useful for long voyages.
7. AIS and Radar Compatibility
Advanced models support AIS (Automatic Identification System) and radar integration, enhancing safety by detecting nearby vessels and obstacles. This is especially crucial in busy waterways.
The Importance of a Trolling Motor
Trolling motors are essential for anglers and boaters who require precise maneuvering and stealth. These motors allow for quiet operation, improved boat control, and better positioning when fishing. Here are a few reasons why a trolling motor is a must-have:
Stealthy Operation: Unlike traditional outboard motors, trolling motors operate quietly, preventing fish from being spooked.
Precise Positioning: Helps maintain a steady position even in strong currents or windy conditions.
Hands-Free Control: Many models offer remote or foot pedal control for better convenience.
Improved Efficiency: Enhances battery life and fuel efficiency by allowing slow, controlled movements.
GPS Integration: Some trolling motors can sync with GPS for automated navigation and anchoring.
