I'm not a programmer but I have a feeling that things going "app based" or running on Android based platforms is causing way more problems than it solved. I'm told that they're easier to program and write stuff for than more refined purpose built software but this seems to lead to a quality drop across the board. Let me complain about the redundant GPS systems I use in my truck for a minute
Tumblr media
The screen on the right is a brand new Rand Mcnally gps. The smaller one on the right is a 4 year old Garmin.
The Garmin is purpose built to be a GPS. I have no idea what it's specs are but they are enough to run the map program and reliably get me where I need to go. If I want to update the map, I plug it into my laptop and download the update. It's pretty simple. If I want it to factor in live traffic data, I can Bluetooth connect it to my phone but that's very much an option and not a requirement.
The Rand Mcnally is an android tablet with a map app that I'm pretty sure you can't get on the app store. The map is pretty good but it crashes more often than I'd like. It also needs a Wi-Fi connection to update the map and get live traffic, meaning that I'll need to leave my phone hotspot on all of the time or buy a separate hotspot and subscription for this thing to work the way I'd like it to.
I'm concerned that the Rand Mcnally isn't going to last as long as I'd like a $400 machine that does one (1) thing to given that it's brand new and already crashes sometimes while in use. I'm not sure if it's the App itself or the trimmed down version of android in the tablet but something isn't right here. The Garmin is slow to type on and the map's aesthetic is a little dated but it works. It actually fucking works. It reliably does what it says on the box and I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to use it indefinitely.
If you really want to get into it, the Qualcomm computer that came with my truck also has a nav system. It's from like 2006 and boy does it feel like it but it also works like new, I just don't have the patience to type addresses into it.
Anyway all of that to say I don't think optimized programming is dead, companies just have to be willing to pay for the development.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

The Ultimate Guide to Garmin Marine GPS and Minn Kota Trolling Motors
For any marine enthusiast, whether a professional angler, a weekend boater, or a long-distance sailor, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Navigation and boat control are two crucial aspects of a smooth and efficient boating experience. This is where Garmin marine GPS and Minn Kota trolling motors come in. These two brands are industry leaders, offering cutting-edge technology, reliability, and performance. In this guide, we’ll explore the importance of marine GPS and trolling motors and why Garmin and Minn Kota are the best choices for your boating adventures.
The Importance of a Marine GPS
A marine GPS is more than just a navigation tool. It provides real-time location tracking, ensures safety by preventing accidents, and enhances the overall boating experience. Here are a few reasons why having a marine GPS is essential:
Accurate Navigation: Whether you are navigating a lake, river, or open sea, a GPS ensures you reach your destination without getting lost.
Weather Updates: Many modern marine GPS devices provide real-time weather conditions to help you avoid storms and hazardous waters.
Fish Finding Capabilities: Some GPS models come equipped with sonar technology, helping anglers locate fish efficiently.
Route Planning & Waypoints: GPS allows you to mark waypoints for future reference and plan your route effectively.
Emergency Assistance: In case of an emergency, a GPS can send distress signals with your exact location, facilitating a quick rescue operation.
Why Choose Garmin Marine GPS?
Garmin has been a trusted name in GPS technology for decades, known for its innovation, precision, and durability. Here’s why Garmin GPS finders are preferred by marine enthusiasts:
1. Superior Mapping and Charting
Garmin marine GPS devices offer detailed and highly accurate maps. With features like BlueChart g3 coastal maps and LakeVü inland maps, you get high-resolution mapping with exceptional detail. These maps include underwater topography, marinas, depth contours, and more.
2. High-Quality Sonar Integration
Many Garmin GPS models come with built-in CHIRP sonar and ClearVü scanning sonar. These technologies provide crystal-clear imaging of underwater structures and fish, making them an excellent choice for anglers.
3. User-Friendly Interface
Garmin’s GPS units are designed with intuitive touchscreens, customizable data fields, and easy-to-navigate menus. Even beginners can quickly learn to use these devices without technical challenges.
4. Wireless Connectivity & Smart Features
Many Garmin models feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to sync your device with your smartphone or tablet. This enables access to real-time updates, software upgrades, and even remote control functionality through apps like ActiveCaptain.
5. Durability and Waterproof Design
Garmin marine GPS units are built to withstand harsh marine environments. They are waterproof and designed to handle extreme conditions such as saltwater exposure, heavy rains, and high temperatures.
6. Auto Guidance and Route Planning
Garmin offers Auto Guidance technology, which calculates the best route based on your boat’s specifications, water depth, and navigational hazards. This feature is incredibly useful for long voyages.
7. AIS and Radar Compatibility
Advanced models support AIS (Automatic Identification System) and radar integration, enhancing safety by detecting nearby vessels and obstacles. This is especially crucial in busy waterways.
The Importance of a Trolling Motor
Trolling motors are essential for anglers and boaters who require precise maneuvering and stealth. These motors allow for quiet operation, improved boat control, and better positioning when fishing. Here are a few reasons why a trolling motor is a must-have:
Stealthy Operation: Unlike traditional outboard motors, trolling motors operate quietly, preventing fish from being spooked.
Precise Positioning: Helps maintain a steady position even in strong currents or windy conditions.
Hands-Free Control: Many models offer remote or foot pedal control for better convenience.
Improved Efficiency: Enhances battery life and fuel efficiency by allowing slow, controlled movements.
GPS Integration: Some trolling motors can sync with GPS for automated navigation and anchoring.
Why Choose Minn Kota Trolling Motors?
Minn Kota has been a leading brand in trolling motors for years, offering innovative features and high-performance motors. Here’s why Minn Kota stands out:
1. i-Pilot GPS System
Minn Kota’s i-Pilot system allows for GPS-controlled trolling, enabling spot-lock anchoring, route memory, and auto-navigation features.
2. Spot-Lock Technology
With the push of a button, Spot-Lock keeps your boat in place, acting as an electronic anchor.
3. Quiet and Powerful Motors
Minn Kota motors are known for their whisper-quiet operation and efficient power usage, ensuring you can fish without disturbing the water.
4. Durability and Corrosion Resistance
Minn Kota trolling motors are built with high-quality materials designed to withstand both freshwater and saltwater environments.
5. Integrated Sonar Compatibility
Some Minn Kota models come with built-in sonar, allowing for better fish-finding capabilities when paired with a fish finder or GPS system.
6. AutoPilot Functionality
The AutoPilot feature keeps your boat on a straight course without manual steering, making long trips more convenient.
Conclusion
A marine GPS and a trolling motor are essential tools for any boater or angler. Garmin marine GPS ensures accurate navigation, safety, and fish-finding capabilities, while Minn Kota trolling motors provide precise boat control and stealthy operation. Investing in these top-tier brands guarantees a seamless and enjoyable experience on the water. Mastering Adventure Motorcycle Navigation: Essential Tools and Tips for Your Next Journey
Why Motorcycle Navigation is Crucial
Adventure riding often takes you to remote areas where signposts are sparse, phone signals are unreliable, and road maps become outdated quickly. Unlike cars, adventure bikes demand a specialized approach to navigation, one that factors in rugged terrains, unpredictable weather, and the need for real-time decision-making.
Essential Tools for Adventure Motorcycle Navigation
Dedicated Motorcycle GPS Units
A reliable motorcycle GPS is a must-have for any serious adventurer. Unlike standard car GPS systems, these are designed to withstand the elements—dust, water, and extreme temperatures. The most popular units, such as the Garmin Zumo series or the TomTom Rider, offer advanced features like topographical maps, real-time traffic updates, and off-road route planning.
Modern GPS devices often have glove-friendly touchscreens, making it easy to navigate while riding. Additionally, their robust mounting systems ensure they stay in place even on the roughest trails. Some also come with Bluetooth compatibility for turn-by-turn directions through your helmet speakers.
Smartphone Apps
While a dedicated GPS system is invaluable, adventure motorcycle navigation smartphones can also be an excellent backup or even a primary navigation tool. Apps like Google Maps, Gaia GPS, or Rever offer detailed maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and route planning specifically for motorcyclists.
For off-road adventures, you can download offline maps through apps like OsmAnd, which allows you to navigate without a cellular connection. However, keep in mind that smartphones are more susceptible to environmental hazards, so investing in a rugged phone mount and weatherproof case is essential.
Paper Maps and Compass
Even in the digital age, having a paper map and compass as a backup is a smart move. Technology can fail—whether it's a drained battery, device malfunction, or loss of signal in remote areas. Paper maps give you a physical overview of your route and surroundings, offering clarity when all else fails. They can also help you see the bigger picture, like nearby towns or gas stations, that GPS might not highlight.
Route Planning Software
Pre-trip planning is just as important as on-the-road navigation. Tools like BaseCamp (for Garmin) or MyRoute-app allow you to create detailed routes, mark points of interest, and download maps for offline use. Planning in advance gives you the freedom to explore with confidence, knowing that you’ve already accounted for fuel stops, rest areas, and potential obstacles.

Key Tips for Successful Adventure Motorcycle Navigation
Study the Terrain Before You Leave
Before setting off on an adventure, familiarize yourself with the terrain. Check elevation changes, weather conditions, and the general difficulty level of the route. Websites and forums dedicated to adventure riding, like ADV Rider or Horizons Unlimited, are great resources for getting tips from other riders who have been there.
Stay Updated on Road and Trail Conditions
Adventure routes can change rapidly, motorcycle adventure gps especially in areas affected by weather, roadworks, or natural events. Use your navigation tools to check for road closures, detours, or any other changes before you hit the road. Some GPS units and apps provide live traffic and weather updates, which can be crucial when navigating challenging terrain.
Mark Key Landmarks
Along your route, mark essential landmarks, such as gas stations, food stops, or scenic viewpoints. This not only helps with navigation but also ensures you don’t miss out on significant points of interest during your adventure. Even if you prefer spontaneity, knowing where you can stop for a refill or a rest is always helpful.
Pack Extra Batteries and Charging Tools
A dead device in the middle of nowhere can spell disaster. Always carry extra batteries or a power bank for your GPS or smartphone. Consider equipping your motorcycle with a USB charging port or solar-powered charger to keep your devices powered throughout the journey.
Trust Your Instincts and Adapt
No matter how well you plan, adventure motorcycling is about adapting to the unexpected. Sometimes, the best routes are the ones you discover on the fly. Trust your instincts, be open to detours, and don’t be afraid to explore paths that might not be on the map.

Garmin smartwatch gets new stable update after three-month wait
Garmin has announced software version 9.02 for the Bounce smartwatch, a model for kids. The wearable is designed to let parents send and receive voice or text messages to their children. On top of this, they can also track their child’s location in real time from a compatible smartphone.
Firstly, the change log for software version 9.02 states that Garmin has resolved a problem where location reports were sent multiple times. The second point states that there are “various bug fixes and stability improvements”, without providing further information on where customers may feel these benefits. This latest stable update comes after version 8.20, which rolled out in late May. The earlier release brought improvements to audio message recording and reduced the impact of poor LTE coverage.
However, customers continue to use the Garmin forum to flag issues relating to messages failing to be sent or being delayed, with no official resolution provided by the company. According to a post on the company’s forum, this relatively minor stable update has rolled out to all eligible wearables. Should you wish, you can now download update version 9.02 for the Bounce kids smartwatch through the Garmin Jr. App.
