I was in Bend in July for the Bend Summer Festival where I took part as a vendor, and I managed to make some stops on the way home. One of them was at Smith Rock where I used the Hasselblad flexbody with both a film back and a digital back. This one was with the film back. I’m happy with the way it looks.

Cedar Creek Grist Mill, Woodland, Washington, July 2020 by Gary L. Quay Via Flickr: I never photographed this mill in the summer until yesterday. I stopped by on my way to Astoria (via I-5, and the bridge at Longview). I was trying to see if using the I-205 to I-5 to Longview to Oregon route was faster than just driving up Route 30 in Oregon. The jury is still out on whether it is faster, but I did get this picture on the way. Camera: nikon D810 Lens: 28mm Zeiss Distagon ZF2

optical unconscious--2015
In his  “The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility,” Walter Benjamin claims that the camera enables the discovery of the optical unconscious, just as psychoanalysis enabled the discovery of the instinctual unconscious. This statement is followed by  the following  passage:
“Moreover, these two types of unconscious [the optical and instinctual] are intimately linked. For in most cases the diverse aspects of reality captured by the film camera lie outside the normal spectrum of sense impressions. Many of the deformations and stereotypes, transformations and catastrophes which can assail the optical world in films afflict the actual world in psychoses, hallucinations, and dreams. Thanks to the camera, therefore, the individual perceptions of the psychotic and the dreamer can be appropriated by collective perception. The ancient truth expressed by Heraclitus, that those who are awake have a world in common while each sleeper has a world of his own, have been invalidated by film—and less by depicting the dream world itself than by creating figures of collective dream, such as the globe-encircling Mickey Mouse.”
The pivot point is not photography’s so-called indexical relationship to reality, but rather its proximity to fantasy.  Photography’s political potential lies not in its ability to document material reality, but rather in its profound link to psychic structures.  Unconscious impulses and desires  guide visual perception. They also shape the way that climate change has been traditionally ignored in order to protect the status quo of a carbon economy.   We are on the edge of a new era in which many of our past habits of thought and practice have become blinders which prevent us from perceiving the realities of our present situation.
Paralysis and denial in relation to   the unthinkable, the uncanny and the catastrophic. If the  Anthropocene requires that we think of humans as a species, then the  narrative is this: there is a species, and part of that species decides initially that it is exceptional at a moral and rational level, but then declares—late in the day—that the species is better described neither as moral nor as rational, but as constituted by destruction.

This spring the Cambridge Writer’s Workshop held their retreat in the vibrant city of New Orleans. The weather was amazing and felt like a breath of fresh air to all of the snow we had experienced in this unusually long winter. We stayed in a gorgeous two-story house across the river from the French Quarter in Algiers’s Point.
The retreat started with a night of games and fun during orientation which helped stir everyone’s creative side!
Classes for this retreat showcased: “Rasa: Emotion & Suspense in Theatre, Poetry, and (Non)Fiction” taught by Rita Banerjee; “What’s At Stake?” taught by Diana Norma; and a two-part course on both finding a literary agent and building a literary platform taught by special lecturer Natalie Kimber, a literary agent from The Rights Factory. The classes were as fun as they were informative and educational.
In our free time, we played a group game of Werewolf, sought out local food and drink, saw local sites, listened to jazz in the French Quarter, and most importantly wrote!
The 48-hour Writing Bake Off has become a staple of the CWW, and this trip produced some amazing work by our writers! As per the usual rules each writer had 48 hours to write around twenty pages of work while incorporating elements as chosen by the fellow writers. This Bake-Off needed to include:
Pastel Colored Houses
The Powdered Sugar from the Beignets
Gentrification
Trumpets
A “Big Easy” Attitude
“Widow-Maker” Trees
Here are some excerpts of what our writers came up with.
Gina Anderson “The Baby Sitter”
I kicked open the door. The creature looked like a Doris Day reject. It held the baby outstretched over the crib readying to extract its soul. “Unhand that child!” I demanded. I’m sure my command came out in a chirpy, garbled mess instead of low demonish.
The woman lowered her palm over the tiny chest of the babe, swaddled up in a blue blankie, as a threat. She opened her mouth up in an unnatural yawn and let out a low hum. The move shut the door behind me and blasted me against it.
The babe was silent. It made no moves to protect itself. This demon babe was rumored to have unimaginable powers. Did the creature stun it with some sort of ability unnatural to this realm?
Very well. If it was going to fight dirty, then the crutches and the pants were coming off. I quickly unwrapped my bandaged legs and feet, releasing my claws, but also thoroughly confusing the possessed creature. I picked up one of the crutches and detached one of the components that doubled as a stake. I only had two left and I only had two shots at getting it right.
The creature stretched the face of its possessed body in that yawn again, but this time it spewed a chemical mist. I coughed to prevent the toxic fumes from entering my lungs. Hey, I’m a birdie with delicate sensibilities. Damn it! These guys just kept upping the threats.
  Adi Hernández “Untitled Bake-Off”
Julio had been off sleeping, reading, and doing just about god-knows-what those three weeks nobody could find him, and in-between it all, he would find himself staring out through the window hoping he would one day go back to what he thought he could remember life to be. Since the accident, since the weather that day long ago, since his brother’s death, he stayed in the upper room of a pastel house that had somehow managed to stay intact. He had been stuck there, paging through the same three books he hadn’t read in a while, but he was beginning to think, maybe a trip outside could spare him from having to read them all over again. They made him sick to remember again.
To remember his hometown in Managua, Nicaragua. To remember the days when he and his brother would simply drop the bags of groceries they carried home to run off to the beach at the sight of a glimmer of water. To remember the nights outside their home eating papaya and waving off the heat those summer days created. To remember his mama and papa spending nights together cooking for the rest of the family just before they would have “uninvited” guests over. To remember his brother’s laugh when he fell into the pond searching for the sea serpent that supposedly lived there. To remember them again, and to realize they were too far to offer any help like he knew they would.
“It’s what I get… I guess.” he thought to himself.
Deb Jannerson “Poems”
first sight
the only track in my discman’s 56-sleeve carrier that mentioned new orleans was about hookers.
i slipped the disc into its wide plastic mouth anyway, lit a funk ribbon between my ears as the seventh-circle seraphim perched back from the trolley window, uninterrupted by its muffled bass.
removed from blood context, i offered myself to the necklace-strewn widowmaker branches, to the creaky car film-reeling academic excuses, to the jester-drunk women embracing on quarter corners.
agnostic phantoms marbled my barrier, warmth wet as a lover, leaned through anthony kiedis to hiss there is something here for you to find.
8/28/05
with two more weeks until the begrudging unlock of the ivory tower, i regressed into the house of the soot eagle
where i unset through the ticking, then shattered offscreen.
in a vertiginous spot of mirror-image cruelty: it really will be a canal street! the sourdough words would not mix with her fault-ridden lips.
my brain disappeared, impotent.
i had left its dormant shadow on the opposite end of the interstate, and almost expected it to survive.
Gary Zeiss “Thank You for Riding with Jesus”
I rode with Jesus the other day. Ten glorious, spirit filled miles. They were fun-filled, too. Yes, I was touched by the son of God himself, and sitting in the back seat of his 2014 Blue Passat (7EAD313), I felt as if I were being whisked away from all my cares.
Jesus asked if I believed in him. How could I say no?  He was sitting there, in the flesh, right in front of me. He would move his hands and the car would turn. He would move his feet
and the car would accelerate or slow down. Of course, Jesus was right there with me, every moment of this journey.
Good thing I became a believer quickly. The 405 was in one of its usual crowding phases, and Jesus was pulling motorcycle like lane splits. Give him this — he could drive like hell. While I was in his holy presence, the day seemed to get brighter. It was if the darkness relented to the holy glory of dawn.
I definitely felt as if I was being touched by an angel — and not just any angel, but the big J. We got off the 405 at La Tijera.
Jesus laid on the horn at the driver in front of us.
No effect.
“No turn on red” I said, pointing to the sign.
“That’s for you folks, not the son of God!” he laughed, almost rear-ending the Explorer with Utah plates that was standing at the light.
I almost thought I heard him mutter a curse word or two at the careful driver in front of us. I knew just then, What Would Jesus Do in traffic?  He’d be just like one of us — pissed off
at the slow driver in front of him, impatient, and ready to honk and curse at a moment’s notice. I felt very close to Jesus at that moment.
Matthew Bargas “Credo: On Truth”
“What is truth,” Pontus Pilate asked. The answer may not be as simple as most would think. In
this day and age of fake news and real news the question is just as relevant as it ever was. Our digital technology can fabricate anything, creat compelling arguments supporting or condemning anything anything, and who is to decide what is real and what is fake.
Aside from science and math, are there any universal truths, or are all truths relative? We hold these truths to be self evident? Really? What does that mean. If life liberty and pursuit of happiness are self evident why is there so much death and destruction, so much oppression, so much misery in our world. How about the divine right of kings? That ‘truth’ was believed by everyone centuries ago. Who knows what everyone will believe in the future?
And there is this excerpt from the song, Wonderful from the musical Wicked:
“We believe all sorts of things that aren’t true. We call it history. A man is called a traitor or a liberator. A rich man is a thief or a philanthropist. Is one a crusader or an invader. It’s all in which label is able to persist. There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities. So act as though they don’t exist.”
  Rachel Kurasz “Widow Maker Trees”
I ran into my house and locked the door. I was fine, I just drank too much, I told myself. The wind howled, branches were scratching at my door. I went to my bedroom and laid down on the bed hoping to get a good night’s sleep and deal with the hangover in the morning. The scratching sounds continued and sounded as if they were right at my bedroom door.
I was scared, I was drunk, and I finally decided I needed to say the prayer, fuck it, being foolish was better than ending up like that poor woman’s corpse.
“As I lay me down to sleep I pray…” Shit. “As I lay me down to sleep I pray…” Fuck.
The scratches grew louder.
“As I lay me down to sleep I pray…” I was so drunk and scared that I had completely forgotten the damn prayer. I kept repeating the first line over and over again. And then I saw it. I saw a small branch crawling through the space in the door frame. I prayed faster.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip full of fun, food, and productivity! Until next time, stay wonderful NOLA!

I bought this to replace my iPhone 6 on T-Mobile. While it does work on T-Mobile I knew going in that I’d be losing LTE which sucks but since it supports HSPA+ bands for T-Mobile I figured it wouldn’t be that bad and it would tide me over until there was a better WP flagship. I’m so glad I bought it though, yes the internet is a little slower but this is by far the best phone I’ve ever used.
First off the design and the materials used are amazing. It feels like something you’d expect to come from Apple, except somehow better. It’s super solid and expensive feeling. It looks absolutely amazing, super high end.
The camera I wasn’t expecting to be that amazing but it totally blows the iPhone 6’s camera away! It’s kind of hard to take a bad shot with this camera.
Overall, even if you’re on AT&T or T-Mobile and have to go back to 3g or HSPA+ do it, it’s well worth it!

Great phone. The speed on H+ network protocol is perfectly fine for web browsing if you are going to use AT&T networks. Thinner and lighter than the 920. Has the wireless charging and the 5 inch screen is just about perfect. This phone is fast works well. The 8.1 interface works well and I quickly adjusted to it. One nice feature is the screen mirroring. I have a Samsung TV and I can mirror to the TV flawlessly. It was darn easy to do, just make sure your TV has this function. I like the fact that you can change the size of your icons and they “rotate” or they rotate graphics like pictures from your album and the like. Was pretty straight forward to move files to and from the phone to my PC as well…this is a huge plus, was able to copy my ringtones, music and pictures with no problem.

I have been using this phone for over 2 weeks now and I can say that all the Apps that I had on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3 are on this phone (hint: from the windows store) and they actually work a lot better. I notice no lag and a very fast and fluid experience. One thing I really enjoy that Android and Apple Phones don’t have is the extremely loud speakers, Built-In Pedometer, and Amazing 20MP Camera.
I don’t need the 20MP camera but in dark and low-light conditions, it outperforms many flagship android and cyanogen phones. I think the only competitor to this phone (in terms of camera quality) are the Apple Phone 6 and HTC One M9
Great Windows Phone and will get upgraded to Windows 10 later this year which is a plus.

Hello, my old phone was an Samsung galaxy, (Android) I liked my phone and it was easy to handle. But I was looking for something new. I use at home and at work windows on the computer and I was curious about how the windows phone works. After studying the tests about the Lumia 930 I decided to buy it and try it out by myself. I wasn’t expecting that this phone is so easy to handle and work with it! That surprised me so positive that I can recommend this phone to everyone who is ready for something new!!! In the beginning it’s an little bit confusing, but you get it really quick. I use my new phone with ATT and it works really well! I don’t have access to 4G LTE, what maybe would be an issue for someone, but still in 3G+ band you get an downstream until 6mbps. What is good and for me enough. If you are connected to your wifi, you get the maximum what your line can do, over 60 mbps with charter spectrum. About the phone self, it works fast and its more able to customize than my old Android phone. The camera is amazing and the tools what you get to edit your pictures are awesome! The navigation is doing a great job like google maps. And you see the speed limit now what I really like. Cortana, the virtual assistant works fast and you can train here to control the phone per voice only, that’s so need if you drive your car. To cut the long story short, the Lumia 930 is an awesome phone what works really fast and what’s easy to handle it. I would buy it again! Perfect job what Nokia and Microsoft did here!!! The only thing what they have to improve is the app store, but that’s an different story. Thanks…

I love this device – it is everything that you would expect after reading the specs, and then some more 🙂
I have had multiple windows devices – but this one clearly blows everything else out of the water, its simply amazing!
Pros: Great screen and display (go out and read under the sun for an amazing experience about sunlight legibility) Camera Audio/Video experience
Cons: Battery life could have been better, but maybe expected, given the power needed for its huge screen

This is the 3rd Lumia phone I’ve used and it’s truly an amazing device. it’s very quick, the display is great, the camera is awesome. Cortana has become a ‘can’t-do-without companion. Only negative I can think of is the lack of compatibility on the 4G service with my ATT. But I can honestly say, coming from a Lumia 1020 from ATT, I can rarely notice the difference. I have (on several) occasions streamed Netflix movies on its H+ and it works great, no lag at all..

I’ve had a lot of phone, Heck I’ve had both the iphone 6 and the Galaxy S5 this year, but this phone imho beats them all. Its amazing. I live the sturdiness and how nice it feels. I might like a slightly larger screen on it, but its amazing either ways. People complain about the windows phone ecosystem not having enough apps, but I’ve never looked for an app there that i could not find (official or unofficial), and the unofficial ones work better a lot of the time. (check out 6nap!) I love this phone. Its amazing.
The seller was also prompt and it came in even earlier than I expected.

I love the phone. Everything arrived as advertised. I do with the Windows Store had more/better apps. I absolutely love the display and functionality of the phone. Lack of Amazon Music app, and other apps that I used to use often, is annoying. I hope this gets sorted out before I have to switch phones.

The Nokia Lumia 930 is the last high-end smartphone made by the legendary Nokia with MSFT OS, making it rare. It also has a number of features that place it a cut above other phones. First, it has the Windows 8.1 OS with standard Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, and ONENOTE now in open source. It also has Outlook.com with Onedrive preconfigured. The processor is 2.2GhZ, almost twice the speed of an average phone, and the display is at the 1920×1080 standard of HDTV. Then, the camera has a 20 mega pixel Carl Zeiss lens with autofocus that works at above average range. The most interesting feature of this phone that differentiates it from other smartphones is that it has a built in hard drive of 32GB size. This means that at levels of reasonable use, a removable micro SD card is not actually necessary. This is an additional security measure protecting against the event of a stolen cell-phone. The Nokia Lumia is compact in size, and has a removable battery. The battery power is comparable to a high-end AA rechargeable. You will love this phone.

#Stitchers Season 3 Episode 5 "Paternis"
The episode starts with a Cameron flashback, the first of many shifting between him, Linus, and Camille. He’s with his dad and they’re about to have a movie night, Jaws. It’s been a year since his surgery, but his dad is still mollycoddling him.
Cameron is at the prison to see his father, but he doesn’t show. A fire alarm goes off and Cameron leaves.
Cameron and Kirsten are painting over the wall of crazy. Cameron then gets a call from Maggie that his father is in lockdown.
In the lab conference room, Fisher says that Cameron’s father, James Miller killed Gary Parsons, a prison guard. Miller says that it was self-defense, but stitching is the only way to prove it, which it does. Parsons also called someone who told him not to let a Bruce near Miller.
Camille talks to Fisher about relationships and hates his advice. Fisher wonders why people come to him. It’s probably because he was married at one point and he’s less intimidating than Maggie.
Linus hasn’t heard back from Ivy and is worried. He talks to Camille and they have this heartbreaking little moment, even though she still doesn’t like Ivy.
This goes into flashback, with Linus’s dad presumably picking him up from the principal’s office? It’s not clear, but what is is that nobody likes him because he’s smart. Linus is also not originally from L.A. because his dad tells him that they are going to move there.
Maggie asks Cameron about Camille piloting the stitches. Cameron asks her about the safe. She doesn’t tell him anything. Cameron spills the beans about Kirsten’s mom and does not immediately tell Kirsten. COMMUNICATE PEOPLE!!!
Linus narrows down people with the name Bruce that would want Miller dead and Fisher and Camille go to get him. The person who paid Parsons to kill Miller also paid Parson’s medical bills.
Scott Bruce lives in a trailer park and Camille looking around leads into a flashback. She is on the side of the road with a bike when a lady stops and asks if she’s okay and then gives her money. As the lady drives away, it’s revealed that it’s a con and a police car shows up. It isn’t after her, but her brother Theo is being arrested for possession of and intent to distribute marijuana.
Back in the present, Scott Bruce is happy with his life, a fact that Camille can’t wrap her mind around.
Maggie tells Linus that she’s considering giving Ivy a job, but it’s obvious she isn’t psyched about it.
Cameron is about to tell Kirsten about her mother and Maggie when Camille bursts in. She tells them about Scott Bruce and that Cameron he should go talk to his dad. Since Miller doesn’t want to see him and it might be bad for him to be talking to the NSA, Cameron goes to the jail as his dad’s lawyer.
His dad doesn’t tell him anything, but it sounds less like he won’t tell him and more like he can’t.
It goes into another flashback. This time it’s of Miller getting arrested, right in front of Cameron.
After Cameron leaves, a guard calls someone telling them that Miller just had a visit from his lawyer. When he describes the lawyer, the guy on the phone knows it’s Cameron.
Camille has a fight with the M.E., which turns into a fight with Kirsten.
It goes into flashback. Camille tells the cop that the marijuana was hers and the cop lets her off with a warning. Theo is happy but Camille is furious.
Linus shows up at Cameron’s apartment seeking relationship advice. Cameron offers alcohol instead.
It goes into flashback. It’s almost identical to the other one except Linus and his dad are wearing different clothes and it’s in L.A. and not Michigan. He just wants friends, and it switches back to Cameron and Linus completely drunk talking to each other.
Then the doorbell rings. When Cameron answers it, several large men enter and push him back against a pole. They ask him about Miller and he says he doesn’t know anything and then Linus kicks their butts. According to Kyle Harris, that’s not the way the scene was originally scripted, but Ritesh Rajan kept pushing and they rewrote it. Go Linus!
In the lab, Camille’s fight with Kirsten turns into a fight with everyone. Linus tells them about Ivy maybe getting a job in the lab.
Maggie asks Cameron if he’s told Kirsten yet. He hasn’t and she tells him to keep it that way.
Camille apologizes to Linus.
Kirsten’s going in and out of sync in the stitch, maybe because of Parson’s head injury. Linus fixes it. Parsons pulled the fire alarm so that Cameron couldn’t see his father.
When Kirsten tells Cameron this, it goes into flashback. The SEC guy, Joe Zeiss, called him Bruce because of his Batman shirt. He framed Miller. He’s been on a business trip, but he’ll be back the next day. Fisher goes to get Miller and keep him safe.
Ivy gets a visit from Stinger, who has been harassing her for the past few days, which is why she hasn’t talked to Linus. Stinger wants her to stay close to him so they can find Jaqueline. When she refuses to help, he reminds her that she was the one behind the young Cameron anomaly.
Cameron talks to his dad. He tells him that they know about Zeiss and Miller apologizes for what he did.
Kirsten’s mom has been moved, presumably by Maggie. She runs to Cameron and he tells her about Maggie. They fight and she leaves. Can we get one episode where they’re happy?
Camille and the M.E. talk and the M.E. breaks up with her?
Kirsten is crying in Ivy’s lap. She’s going to be crushed when she finds out.
Cameron and Fisher go to arrest Zeiss, but his son opens the door. Cameron can’t arrest the guy in front of his son, so they leave.
Then there’s a flashback montage of all three of them.
Camille is throwing rocks at a trailer park and breaking down.
Linus calls Ivy again and she doesn’t answer.
Maggie’s back, but everyone is miserable. 7/10

National Audubon Society at Hog Island – The Sherrie and Trudy Show
“Find your place on the planet. Dig in, and take responsibility from there.” ― Gary Snyder
A quick note to say hello and share some news and a photograph…  I’ve been selected this year as an artist in residence with the National Audubon Society at Hog Island. How cool, huh?  To this end, it’s my intent over the next several months to share with you some of my photography from my project.  It’s a continuation, in many ways, of my most recent stuff – creating environmental portraits documenting the individual and their connection to unique natural surroundings in Maine.
As many of you might guess, I’m using black and white film and large and medium format cameras to create these photographs.  It’s a purposeful choice tied to the dynamics involved with using these larger formats that near-forces the photographer to contemplate and concentrate a bit more on each individual image.  Yes, this will prove more labor intensive and time consuming for me than other options, but it is my hope that this helps make a more intimate visual experience. …and thus for this photographic process to equate to an expression and communication of my own personal experience; a means to further hone my own way of seeing and describing the world around me by embracing process.  While you’ll get to see some digital content via negative scans, my true end product will be a portfolio of fine silver gelatin enlarged prints made in a traditional wet darkroom using the negatives, an enlarger, light sensitive silver coated paper, and chemicals.  Timeless.
Okay, I also want to introduce you to Sherrie and Trudy.  They are both instructors at National Audubon’s Education Camp on Hog Island, Bremen, Maine.  You can tell from their picture that they are both cards. …but you know, aces.  I’ve had time to follow them both around and observe their field instruction, and it’s something to watch.  In fact, students referred to them as “the Sherrie and Trudy Show”.  Nothing short of entertaining…  …but subtly tied to their package of fun is relevant information on topic, example, a spirit of inquisitiveness, openness, and safe space to ask and learn.  Awesome in the truest sense.  Oh yes, welcome to the show!  Thank you, Trudy and Sherrie.  Big smiles.

The Offer - A Short Horror Film from DavidSchuler on Vimeo.
A babysitter receives a strange text from an unknown number. - ABOUT: The idea here was to try and build a level of suspense without any character development or traditional dialogue. While these elements are typically crucial, I also believe that the genre of Horror challenges their importance to a slight degree; I can't tell you how many times I've found myself wandering outside after hearing a car wreck without even knowing how bad it might be or who was involved, only to find a gathering of neighbors doing the exact same thing...Do we want to escape our own problems by bearing witness to a stranger's tragedy? I don't have that answer but it's something I considered while this came together. _
PRODUCTION: Our lead/my production partner (Julie Paige) and I had initially planned to grab a simple camera package via ShareGrid and shoot entirely on our own, however upon asking a great friend/DP for advice who I'd previously worked with (JR Kraus), he jumped on board and the conversation expanded to favors and friends getting involved...It's no secret that Los Angeles is an incredible place for productions such as these but this experience only reinforced my faith in the community. In total, the budget was below 2K and we were finalized in less than 2 weeks.
We filmed this on the Arri Alexa Mini with Zeiss Super Speeds. Aerial photography was captured via DJI Inspire2 / Zenmuse X5S, thanks to the amazing @DRONEDUDES right here in LA.
Major thanks to everyone who came together to make this happen. Please comment with questions/feedback!
