A Tech’s Frequently Asked Questions – Which Laptop Should I Buy?

I don’t get this question as much as “Which desktop computer should I buy?” But it’s still a question I get occasionally, and more often since laptops have come down in price.
Again I will include Macs in this article.
Basic Laptop
There are a literal ton of basic laptops available on the market from small pocket laptops like the GPD Mini, chrome books like the Acer Chromebook R 11 convertible, and Windows laptops like the Lenovo IdeaPad 330s.
With Apple you only have the MacBook, MacBook Air, or the MacBook Pro. The best example of a basic Apple laptop would be the 2017 MacBook Air with a dual core Intel Core i5 – 5350U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD hard drive, and a 13” 900p display. It’s a reasonably good configuration, with a beefy price tag at $869.
On the PC side a good basic laptop should have a 7th or 8th generation dual core Intel Core i3 (which performance wise is more than equivalent to the 5th generation dual core i5 – 5350U found in the Apple MacBook Air above and more power efficient as well) or better, 6-8 GB Ram, a 250 GB SSD hard drive or a 1TB mechanical hard drive, and a 13” or 15” full HD display (that’s 1920 X 1080). A good example of  this type of configuration is the Lenovo IdeaPad 330s for $449 which has a dual core Intel Core i3 processor with 6GB RAM, 1TB mechanical hard disk, and a 15.6” full HD display which is a great configuration for the money.
Home, Office, or Professional Laptop / Professional Desktop Workstation Replacement
For professional laptops I would like to separate this into 2 categories. Ultra-books are computers that are used by home computer users, people on the go, and business people, and desktop workstation replacements that have enough power to replace a desktop computer for almost all workstation tasks.
An ultra-book is a light computer that weighs between 2 and 5 pounds and are relatively powerful. Most of these computers currently come with a quad core Intel i5U or i7U (the “U” stands for ultra-low power consumption), an SSD hard drive (in sizes between 250GB and 2TB), either 8 or 16GB of RAM, either a 13” or 15” display with either HD, 4K or Retina (an Apple only display technology) display, and battery life exceeding 6 hours. A good example of a Mac based ultra-book is the current Apple MacBook which either uses a dual core Intel M3 or i5 (yep … still dual core, with the overpriced $1200+ price tag), a 13” Retina display. A good example on the PC side is the HP Spectre X360 which starts at $1150 for a 13” HD model with a quad core Intel i5U, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD hard drive, with touch screen and digitizer pen input, and a plethora of security features like an IR facial recognition, a fingerprint reader, and it weighs less than 3 lbs for the 13” model (a much better value than a MacBook).
A desktop workstation replacement carries a quad or hexa-core Intel Core i7 or a hexa-core Intel Core i9 processor, 16GB RAM or more, a 250GB SSD hard drive or more, a 15” high resolution display powered by a discrete Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), and can cost upwards of $1700. A good example is the Apple MacBook Pro 15” for $2099 with a hexa-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD hard drive, a 15” Retina display powered by an AMD Radeon Pro 555X with 4GB of Graphics RAM. A good PC example is a Dell Precision 7730 which is also priced at $2099, and comes equipped with a hexa-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD hard drive, a 17” 900p display (although for an extra $180 you can upgrade this display to a 4K Ultra HD display) powered by an AMD Radeon WX 4150 with 4GB of Graphics RAM (a GPU designed for mobile workstations). As you can see in the workstation space MacBook Pro’s are priced well in the ball park of their Windows counterparts.
A Gamer’s Laptop (Sorry … No Macs here)
Gaming on a laptop isn’t so much about the CPU, but the GPU. Sure you will want a quad core or hexa-core CPU with at least a 2GHz in speed, and a boost clock of above 3GHz would allow for great gaming performance, a 250GB SSD hard drive for your OS and files, and a 1 to 2TB mechanical hard drive or SSD for your games will allow you to store a decent amount of games. A 15” display capable of HD or better video at a reasonably high frame rate of 144Hz will allow for split-second timing while gaming. A good cooling air intake or liquid cooling system will keep the laptop’s microprocessor and GPU running at optimal thermal levels. Finally, a gaming laptop needs a gaming graphics card. When it comes to mobile gaming the best option is an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 or better (but the best value proposition is the 1070), or an AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 GPU (pretty much the only option for high end gaming on an AMD based gaming laptop).
A good base model for a gaming laptop is the $1299 Acer Predator Helios 300 which has a 2.2 GHz hexa-core Intel Core i7 at 2.2GHz, 16GB RAM, a 250GB SSD hard drive, a 1TB hard drive, a 15” HD display capable of 144Hz, and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 with 6GB Video RAM.
For more gaming power the $1679 MSI Raider GE73 which has a 2.2 GHz hexa-core Intel Core i7 at 2.2GHz, 16GB RAM, a 250GB SSD hard drive, a 1TB hard drive, a 17” HD display capable of 144Hz, and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 with 8GB Video RAM.
For those who want the ultimate mobile gaming experience without having to lug around a 15 pound laptop, or pay more than $3000 should check out the $3000 MSI GT63 Titan 4K which has a 2.2 GHz hexa-core Intel Core i7 at 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, a 250GB SSD hard drive, a 1TB hard drive, a 15” UHD (4K) display capable of 120Hz, and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 with 8GB of Video RAM.
For those rooting for team Red (an AMD platform solution) there is the $2200 Acer Predator Helios 500 which has a 2.2 GHz octa-core AMD Ryzen 7 2700 at 3.2GHz, 16GB RAM, a 250GB SSD hard drive (you will have to add your own secondary hard drive on this machine), a 17” HD display capable of 144Hz, and a AMD Radeon Vega 56 with 8GB of stacked HBM2 (improves video performance) Video RAM.
Conclusion
Again much like my last article this is all really simplified, I just felt that I should talk a bit about the hardware to help you make a decision. There are allot of low spec laptops available, and people purchase them because they cost just a few hundred dollars, and many people buy them because of the misconception “a PC is just a PC.” If you know the specs of what makes a decent computer, then you can use that information along with reviews to find a good system with similar specs. This guide will likely work until the end of 2019 (for the most part). Good luck with your laptop shopping.

Similarly, in the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi film Kin, the neon lights and colorful explosions burst with rich, saturated blues and oranges. Matte displays don't typically have the same wow factor as their glossy counterparts, but I was in awe every time I visited my favorite websites on the Precision. My main complaint with the display is that skin tones look oversaturated, but you can adjust the color temperature using Dell's included display-calibration software.The display's outstanding qualities were quantified in our testing. The panel reproduced a staggering 211 percent of the sRGB color gamut, achieving among the highest ratings we've seen. While the Lenovo ThinkPad P71 (183 percent) and HP ZBook 17 G4 (173 percent) also impressed, their panels were nowhere near as colorful as the Precision's. The workstation average is much lower, at 149 percent.
With this machine's matte display and impressive peak brightness, you should have no issue using the Precision 7730 in bright environments. The display reached a maximum brightness of 330 nits, which is higher than scores from the ThinkPad P71 (283 nits) and HP ZBook 17 G4 (256 nits). The workstation average is also dimmer, at 325 nits. With an actuation force of 69 grams and a key travel of 1.6 millimeters (1.5mm to 2mm is recommended), the chiclet-style keyboard with numpad is comfortable to use, even during long typing sessions. Weighty and tactile, the backlit keys offer a rewarding amount of feedback and are well-spaced.In the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I reached 114 words per minute, with an error rate of 5 percent. That matches my 95 percent accuracy rate but is slightly slower than my 119 word-per-minute average, likely because of the key's above-average actuation force.
For a device this large, the Precision 7730's 3.9 x 2.1-inch touchpad is inexplicably small. Fortunately, it made up for its size by responding quickly to my gestures, including pinch-to-zoom, four-finger tapping to open settings and three-finger swiping to change apps.MORE: Our Favorite Gaming KeyboardsIf touchpads aren't your thing, you can use the little rubber nub in the center of the Precision 7730's keyboard. You've long been able to buy portable batteries that'll keep your phone running even through a heavy day of thumb-typing. For comparison, the current 15-inch MacBook Pro has a 83.6-watt-hour battery.The 7-inch-long HyperJuice has three ports -- one 100-watt USB-C port for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, one 60-watt USB-C port for smaller laptops that don't draw as much power, and one quick-charge 18-watt old-style USB-A for phones and tablets. You can charge devices with all three of its ports at the same time.
The device shows the versatility of the USB-C standard, years old but still a relative novelty for much of the computing world. The same port can be used for many types of devices, and now it can handle charging PCs as well as power-sipping phones. If you don't have USB-C today, you might well have it on your next laptop or phone, though Apple still hasn't embraced it for mobile devices.The HyperJuice battery pack will cost $300, although an early KickStarter price is half that. The Helios 300’s 1.05-inch chassis isn’t the thinnest, and it doesn’t have the highest quality build I’ve seen in a laptop for this price, but it does well to mask most of my fingerprints, despite its dark metal palm rest. The Helios 300 reminds me of gaming laptops from two years ago when tasteful styling was unheard of and a gaming laptop that could double as a productivity machine was equally unheard of. I cannot say this design language has aged well — it hasn’t — but the real worth of the Helios 300 is in how well it can play games.A “gaming” laptop, no matter its price, should be able to deliver high-end performance through a decent GPU and CPU and have the bare essentials to take advantage of that performance, such as a high refresh rate screen and reliable cooling. To this point, the Acer Helios 300 delivers a little bit of everything and then some.

The first spec an affordable gaming laptop should focus on is a good screen. Acer used a 144Hz IPS screen on the Helios 300. High refresh rate screens are important in PC gaming because the higher the rate, the smoother your gameplay experience will be. 144Hz is the current standard for high-end desktops and laptops, and it’s a welcome addition to a $1,200 laptop, which are usually equipped with slower, 60Hz screens.There’s a lot I can say about the Helios 300’s gaming and productivity performance. Prior to the Helios 300, I haven’t tested a sub-$2,000 laptop that can play Rainbow Six: Siege and League of Legends, at a consistent 144 frames per second. Overwatch also runs at ultra settings, but it dips to the 80 fps mark in intense firefights. Destiny 2 also runs comfortably at around 100 fps with settings on ultra.The gist of it is that you’ll be able to play most current-generation PC games on high (or the highest) settings, well past the 60 fps mark needed for smooth gameplay, and sometimes you’ll even reach the native 144 fps target.
