He exhorts them to stay strong in the faith, even in the midst of persecution, reminding them of The Second Coming and Heavenly rewards. Also, in this chapter Paul is diffusing the tensions that have arisen in the church and he exhorts them to holiness and basic Christian living.

Hosea was told by God to marry a prostitute

If God told you to marry a promiscuous person, could you do it? 

Could you do what God commands? During his marriage to Gomer, Hosea was cheated on and she eventually left him for another man. But he stayed with her. There was even a suggestion that some of the children she had with him was not biologically his. He was deeply stressed and hurt because of the way she treated him. She was eventually sold into slavery by her lover and he showed immense love by purchasing her and taking her home.  His love didn’t die. He didn’t reject her. Even though she gave him lots of emotional pain, he stayed with her. 

What does this mean to us? What does this story shows us?

(Now I am not telling you to stay in an abusive relationship with someone) 

This shows the Love of God. How much he loves us. We as humans are constantly unfaithful to him but he continues to love us. 

Now, could we do this? Could we stay with someone that hurt us over and over even though God himself commanded it? Why would God cause us to suffer in this way? Was he trying to teach us something? Why would he use us to show the people how much he loves us. Gomer was a KNOWN prostitute, so when Hosea married her everyone knew. So, they talked about him and watched how she treated him. He was outwardly EMBARRASSED. The whole town talking about him. He probably felt so foolish. I am sure they called him a fool.

But, this was a story for forgiveness. Of how even though we treat God unlovingly, he forgives and loves us. God’s relationship with Israel was a parallel relationship with Hosea and Gomer.  His pain and anguish was the pain and anguish that we give to our father in heaven but yet he is faithful to us even though he are not to him.  

We are supposed to love like that. We are supposed to forgive like that. Now. if you are in an abusive situation I do not think you should stay with a person that is physically hurting you. Sometimes living apart and getting help that is needed can make a difference. Sometimes loving someone and forgiving them, doesn’t mean that we must stay in the same home. (just my opinion). I am trying to walk on egg shells and say the right thing because being with someone that that is consistently taking your through the mud may not work. In this instance, GOD himself told Hosea to marry this woman. That was the difference. God put them together. 

This is something that I have to do better myself. Once I hurt, I close up because I am afraid of being hurt again. So I am guilty of not forgiving. God told us to forgive and forgive, but can I forgive living somewhere else?
