per my mom, one little boy she was teaching apparently lost his tooth during an isles learn to skate and sparky did find it on the ice, so of course i had to squeaks verse that story 🥰
“Mommy!”
Talia’s yelp echoes across the ice and your heart sinks, mind immediately jumping to the worst case scenario. You jump to your feet, Max squawking in surprise when he bounces in the carrier strapped to your chest, and hurry towards the boards.
“What’s the matter? Are you hurt?” You nearly step onto the ice, but remember Max at the last minute, and stop, cupping your hand over his back and bending a little at the waist to be eye level with Talia.
There’s a spot of blood on her lower lip and your heart skips a beat. How did you miss her getting hit? How did the guys miss her getting hit?
“No,” she wails, “my tooth fell out on the ice and now the Tooth Fairy won’t come.” Her sentence disappears into hiccups and you relax, the adrenaline spike of fear slowly receding.
“T, honey,” you reach out to cup her cheek, “the Tooth Fairy will still come. Don’t worry, baby.”
Bo skates up to the boards, the background noise of the kids skating and practicing continuing. He drops a hand on top of Talia’s helmeted head. “You okay, Talia? What happened?” He asks warmly, concern creasing his forehead.
You can see Matt, Casey, and Cal looking over your way too, heads cocked in matching silent questions. You wave back, shooting them a thumbs-up so they know nothing is wrong.
“My tooth fell out, Uncle Bo,” Talia cries. “And now I’m not gonna be able to find it and then the Tooth Fairy won’t come.”
“Oh, that’s an easy fix,” Bo grins. “We can just look for the tooth on the ice. You were practicing by the cones with Zeeker, right?”
Talia nods, wiping at her wet cheeks with one gloved hand. “Uncle Casey said my stick handling was better than Daddy���s,” she says, making both you and Bo snort a laugh.
“Do not stop camp to look for her missing tooth,” you murmur to Bo, bouncing on the balls of your feet to calm Max down. “The Tooth Fairy will still come.”
Bo winks at you and holds his hand out for Talia. She takes it and he says, “come on, TB. We’ll get the group on the hunt.”
Talia skates off with Bo, visibly perked up now, and you shake your head. Your nepo baby daughter using her connections, Mat will get a kick out of it when you relay the story over dinner.
You watch, with an eye roll, as the group takes time out of the afternoon session to look for Talia’s lost tooth. To your horror, Sparky joins in, making a game of it and studying the ice intently. Five minutes later, the dragon jumps up and down on the ice, clapping his hands and pointing at a spot right next to an orange plastic cone. Cal snorts and leans down, announcing that Sparky found the tooth, before skating over to deposit it in your palm.
“Sparky’s demanding a finder’s fee,” Cal deadpans, a twinkle in his eyes.
You pocket the tooth. “That was ridiculous,” you grin back at him.
“TB’s NHL ready,” Cal says, skating backwards to rejoin the group, “losing her teeth on ice.”
Later, while you’re cooking dinner, Mat comes in from his round of golf and you can hear Talia’s little feet as she makes a beeline for him.
“Daddy! I lost my tooth at camp and Sparky found it on the ice! And Uncle Cal said I’m ready to play with you and Uncle Casey said my stick handling was better than yours,” her voice is loud and high-pitched as she recounts the day in one long sentence, getting louder as Mat carries her into the kitchen. “Mommy took us for ice cream after camp too and we met Tulsa and Gunnar and Aunt Hol said that maybe I can learn to whistle through my teeth since one is gone. Can you show me?”
You giggle at the look on Mat’s face - you’ve both learned how to listen when Talia’s rambling through a story, but it’s always a little overwhelming when she manages to go without taking a real breath.
He looks up at you and says, “Sparky found her tooth?”
“That’s what you retained from her story?” You ask in disbelief.
“Well, that and the fact that Zeeker’s gone senile in his retirement,” Mat smirks at you.
Talia pats Mat’s cheek for his attention, which he happily gives her. “Daddy, what’s senile mean?”

Mat’s sitting on the couch, watching ESPN game highlights when you walk into the room, phone in hand. He looks up at you and smiles lazily, exhausted after returning from a West Coast swing the night before and an early morning practice. He pats the couch cushion, “come join me.”
You smile at him, but don’t respond, instead turning back to your phone.
“Hey,” you speak into the camera, video recording already started, “can you guys watch my boyfriend for me while I do something really quick?”
You settle your phone on the coffee table, propped up against a few of the decorative books that Mat had fought you on buying but ends up reading when he’s bored and wander back out of the room. You stay within earshot though and manage to hide behind the wall so you can see him.
Mat looks between the phone on the table and the doorway where you disappeared a few times, frowning for a minute. His eyebrows are drawn together over his nose and you cover your mouth to muffle a little giggle. The Tik Tok trend is stupid but you’re curious to see what Mat does.
After a few seconds of confused staring, Mat starts speaking into the camera.
“Kitchen floor, couch, pool,” he starts ticking locations off on his fingers, a slow smile forming on his face. “Backseat of the car, front seat of the car, Bo’s bathroom, Leesy’s bathroom, our bathroom, golf cart. Um, where else?”
Now it’s your turn to frown, confused. What the hell is he making a list of?
“My childhood bedroom, Squeaks’ childhood bedroom,” he continues and your eyes widen a little, realizing what he’s doing. “Squeaks’ office -“
You dart back into the living room, cutting him off and saying, “oh my god, what are you listing off?”
His grin is wicked and he looks directly at the camera when he says, “all the places I’ve fucked you.”
“Aghhhh!” You squeal and tackle him onto the couch, his laughter vibrating through your chest. “Stop that!”
You dart your foot out to kick your phone off the coffee table, knowing it won’t stop the recording and hoping the clatter doesn’t mean you broke the screen. “Why are you like this?” You whine, trapped in the embrace of his arms. “That was supposed to be a wholesome video!”
Mat can’t stop laughing and it’s contagious, making you giggle a little even though you’re trying to stop. “Baby,” he presses a kiss to the top of your head, “nothing about us is wholesome. I could’ve kept going on that list for another ten minutes.”
“I hate you,” you grumble.
