Flameforger's Cuisine

In the Ashfall Waste natural food resources are scarce and much of their food is imported from other Flights. While neither Banescales or Coatls eat plants, seafood is a hot commodity with a large majority being imported from the nearby Churscarf Wharf of Water. Export of metal and weapons was thriving and thus provided the necessary income for the imports; however, with the Magmablood Rebellion those exports have dwindled and so has the treasure needed for seafood. Yet, the chefs of Fire are a passionate group who have traveled throughout the lands and always come back home with presents of food and drink- and of course their ability to cook some amazing meals!

Scaleskin Marlin Ham- an import from Redrock cove, the tail of this gigantic fish is brined for 3 days and then coated in a toasted spice mixture of ground Pelagas Feathers, Wild Mustard, and dried Blood Acorn. It is then left to cure for 4 weeks before being thinly sliced and served with a Warm Miniature Potash chutney and Turnip bread crostini. (thanks to Josh Niland for the idea)

Grilled Firecoiler Egg Bowl - fillets of the long Firecoiler are first skewered to prevent them from curling when grilled. Then they are marinaded in Wild Catsup, Ashfall Prickler sauce, and garum (a fermented fish sauce made Anchovies).  After grilling they are put into a pot of fish broth and Wild Onions, simmered, before a Hooded Hen egg is added to be soft scrambled. The whole mixture is poured over a Turnip-Granny Smith Apple mash.   

Crown of Roast Ram-cutting and tying a rack of ram into a crown can be a difficult, but chefs often use a Blacksand Annex brand bundt pan to help retain its shape. The juices are mixed with tart Blackberry vinegar, Wild Catsup, and fresh Siltvine to create a tart and sweet sauce for the strong-tasting meat of the Ram.  Typically served with roasted Thistle hearts and baked whole Sweet Potatoes.

Rebel Red Hotpot- started by the rebels to cook food when low on fuel, it is a pot of Dried Jerky broth colored red with Crimson Jadevine. Food is quickly cooked in the boiling broth before being dipped into a ground Fire Ant (or Firefly) pepper in oil. Most common foods for the pot are: Cindershroom, Salamanders, Softshell Scorpion, Red Octopus tentacles, and Fissure Crawdads, but truly the variety is whatever you can catch that day.

Knee Kicker- a very spicy sandwich that starts with frying a recently molted Red Knee Tarantula. The fried Tarantula is then dipped in a Blacktongue Pepper sauce (import from Shadow) and dusted with powered Firefly pepper.  Then this deadly arachnid is topped with pickled Wasteland Pear slices and placed between two toasted Sweet Grass buns. Considered a deadly weapon in all Flights except Fire.

Scorpion Scampi Pizza- the tastiest part of a Scorpion Fly is its tail, which it drops after becoming an adult. Dutifully collected by smaller dragons, it is cooked in wine, garlic, herbs, and sour Miniature Potash Peach juice till barely pink. The crust is precooked before the sauce, tails, and Snow Elk parmesan (import from Ice) is layered upon it. The pizza is baked again for a few minutes (or milliseconds in the volcanic ovens) to get the perfect melty and crunchy bite!

Sweet Potato Poutine- jokingly called a peace offering to Ice Flight, this hearty dish starts with a base of thin and crispy fried Sweet Potatoes from the Volcanic Vents. It is topped with smoked rice milk curds (rice an import from Wind), Cindershroom gravy, and a spicy Cindermint pepper.

Wildfire Kebab- there are some brave flowers and plants that survive and thrive in the Volcanic Vents. They are the divine Smolderpetal, the dangerous Speckled Fire Lily, the caloric Blood Spath, the meaty Cindershroom, and the slightly bitter Cindervine. Together they are roasted on metal skewers and basted with a Ashfall Prickler sauce.

Zeeba Berry Bars- a sweet treat that with came about from a truce between Fire Flight and Centaurs. Ration Pouches filled with oats and nuts formed the base of the bar, and the center is a mix of Strawberry and Blackberry jam. The top is striped with a sweet frosting dyed black with powdered Cindervine.

Flaming Peach Souffle -a testament to any chef’s ability, a Souffle is a risky and rewarding dessert. Miniature Potash Peaches are finely chopped with sugar and cooked in saucepan with the egg yolks. The egg whites, sugar, and cream of tartar (which is also metal processing agent that prevents oxidation) are beaten into stiff peaks and gently mixed with the peach mixture before being added to ramekins and cooking. A smokey Grassland Grain bourbon sauce is poured over top and set alight to the delight of the diner.

Blue Flame Boulevardier- a cocktail made of Red Banana Liqueur (which is actually blue), Grassland Grain bourbon, sweet vermouth (import made from Light’s grapes or Ice’s sugar beets), and Pelagas Feather Campari. Stirred with ice and then strained with into a chilled glass, it is garnished with a slice of Wisp Fruit.

PINBALL WIZARD

After the car journey and finding our accommodation in Dordrecht (a very upmarket and spacious granny annex in our hosts' garden), we headed into the centre to explore.

Imagine my surprise to discover not only a retro pinball table, but also that Ellis had never ever played on one.

Two Euros were immediately spent to improve his education.

I beat him (obviously, or I wouldn't have mentioned it).

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the statues appear to be of an acceptable standard.

a slightly different post regarding some refurbishments made to the walker's lot. i preface this with two thing: a) i could have announced the change within some kind of storyline but i am still not great at storytelling so i have just decided to make a post like this and b) i am not a builder and i typically use the premade lots and eventually decorate and add to them like here so no judgement on the fact i am playing in a very basic base-game house lol.

you probably recognise the the green home of this lot. this is where the walker's have been living. since living there, they have put a lot of effort into saving in order to expand this home to cater to their family needs...

and they have put a lot of effort into saving with my mod that increases the bills from 1.3% of assets to 15% of assets - when 15% starts getting too easy, i can increase it to 20%, 25% etc which is exciting as i like a challenge with money.

with their savings they have built an additional home on their lot (maybe something granny annexe-esque - i feel like that's a very british term lol but it is just a smaller additional home like what the sekemoto's have too). i enjoy doing this in my game play because i do not like moving sims out as i like playing with them all but the idea of having the whole entire family as they begin to branch off e.g., when francesca and / or gabriel have partners and / or children, it feels a little unrealistic for them to live under one small roof.

i thought i would introduce the construction that has took place on the walker's lot because otherwise i think it would have been strange for all of a sudden to have a new house there. also, it will probably make things easier storytelling wise when sims start moving into the additional home / granny annexe.

this was such a ramble however, i did enjoy sharing about how i go about my legacy gameplay and also about my bills mods i use. i cannot play without harder bills so i want to share if people do not know about the mod. it can be found here (you might noticed the 15% of assets bills are not there - i edited the package file as when starting out, i felt 10% was too easy by 20% was too hard. if anyone wants pointers on editing the package file, let me know and i can explain.

Dear Chai

the old home is completely empty. It's official. It's exciting and scary at the same time. I have been looking for a house for a year before this very moment, and yet I never imagined it. It's like say goodbye to a friend you've known forever. I can say I grew up in grandma's apartment. Both my parents had full time jobs when I was a kid, so they send me to the granny kindergarten. And also my younger sister. At first she didn't fully agree about selling the old apartment, but she changed her mind when she saw the new cottage, with a separate annex where she can live in - even though it needs some fix - and the big garden.

I think the garden is my favorite part. To be honest, there is green everywhere you lay your eyes on. For example, here a comparison with the view from my room at grandmas, and the view from my room in the cottage. That's a big yes for me!!

While having lunch today, I suddenly realized that I can eat outside every time I want to. I could have breakfast, lunch, teatime, dinner, every single day, because I just have to open the front door, and in a few step I'm in my garden (which have the same square meters of the cottage, so you know it's big!!).

Yesterday in the late afternoon I was placing mosquito nets on the windows when I said to myself "You know what? I'm going to lay in the grass for a little now", and I took a piece of cloth that was lying around, I put it on the part of the garden I already cleaned, and I laid there, watching the clouds in the sky. I can't even remember when was the last time I did something like this.

Next week I want to focus on adjusting the garden, so I can put a table and be out all the time.

Mortgage refused 'for hosting Ukrainian refugees'

Halifax has apologised for rejecting a customer’s mortgage application because the home owner is hosting two Ukrainian refugees.

Dominik Zaum and his family have had a mother and her young daughter staying with them in an annexe since June 2022.

When his mortgage came up for renewal, he applied for one with Halifax.

But Dominik was refused after Halifax said there was a risk he could rent out the space for commercial gain in the future.

“We were very surprised by this because we’ve never rented it out, we’re not renting it out now… and we have no intention of renting it out in the future,” he said.

Dominik has what he describes as a small “granny” flat attached to his house. It is one self-contained room with a kitchenette and a small bathroom accessed by its own door.

He is part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme which started just over a year ago to help rehome refugees who fled the country following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

So far, according to government figures 153,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the UK and research suggests most of them have stayed.

To help with the expense of housing refugees, hosts are provided with £350 per month for the first 12 months and £500 for each month after that point.

Like millions of other fixed-rate mortgage holders in the UK, Dominik’s loan was coming up for renewal this year so he decided to look around for a new deal.

And that’s when the trouble – and worry – started.

Halifax sent someone to value Dominik’s home.

He said: “We spoke directly with the valuer before, when he came and looked at our house.”

But Dominik said “When we contacted the Halifax through our broker they said they could not provide us with a mortgage because we were providing accommodation to a Ukrainian family and therefore there was a significant risk that we would rent out the room commercially in the future.”

Halifax has since apologised for “the confusion” after being contacted by Money Box and has offered Dominik a mortgage deal.

But Dominik claims the only reason Halifax backed down is because Money Box started to investigate. “We raised it twice with the Halifax through our mortgage broker and nothing changed,” he said.

“It is very unfortunate that it took Money Box to get a response.”

Halifax said it is “very sorry for the confusion” and is very supportive of the Homes for Ukraine scheme and that it wouldn’t decline a mortgage application on this basis.

“Having reviewed the application again, we’ve now issued an offer and the application will proceed as normal,” it said.

Halifax said the valuer did not appreciate the informal nature of the tenancy, and this was reflected in their report where they noted the property was unsuitable for these lending purposes and given a zero valuation.

Dominik said that he was worried that Halifax’s refusal could have been mirrored by the rest of the lending sector. “We did not know at the time if other banks might have reacted similarly,” he said.

“We have since secured a mortgage with another bank so, fortunately, it has not had any impact on our finances.”

He added: “Had we not been able to secure a new mortgage we would have moved from a fixed-term mortgage to a higher rate and cost us over £9,000 a year.”

The government has advised people who are hosting refugees through the Homes for Ukraine scheme to keep any interested parties informed.
