Smith Steifle Grocery-Bradley, South Carolina
Bradley, South Carolina, is located on the southwest border of Greenwood County. The unincorporated town’s population is 160. If you’ve ever driven 221 south, you drove right past the Smith Steifle Grocery Store. Ruben Smith Steifle ran the store for over 50 years. Stifle passed away in 2021, and according to his obituary, he was “a friend to many.” I am uncertain if the store is open.

You might have heard of Black Wall Street. Meet the founder, O.W. Gurley.
In 1905 Gurley and his wife sold their property in Noble County and moved 80 miles to the oil boom town of Tulsa. Gurley purchased 40 acres of land in North Tulsa and established his first business, a rooming house on a dusty road that would become Greenwood Avenue. He subdivided his plot into residential and commercial lots and eventually opened a grocery store.
As the community grew around him, Gurley prospered. Between 1910 and 1920, the Black population in the area he had purchased grew from 2,000 to nearly 9,000 in a city with a total population of 72,000. The Black community had a large working-class population as well as doctors, lawyers, and other professionals who provided services to them. Soon the Greenwood section was dubbed “Negro Wall Street” by Tuskegee educator Booker T. Washington.
Greenwood, now called Black Wall Street, was nearly self-sufficient with Black-owned businesses, many initially financed by Gurley, ranging from brickyards and theaters to a chartered airplane company. Gurley built the Gurley Hotel at 112 N. Greenwood and rented out spaces to smaller businesses. His other properties included a two-story building at 119 N. Greenwood, which housed the Masonic Lodge and a Black employment agency. He was also one of the founders of Vernon AME Church.

"When President Joe Biden signed a proclamation Tuesday establishing a national monument honoring Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, it marked the fulfillment of a promise Till’s relatives made after his death 68 years ago.
The Black teenager from Chicago, whose abduction, torture and killing in Mississippi in 1955 helped propel the Civil Rights Movement, is now an American story, not just a civil rights story, said Till’s cousin the Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr.
“It has been quite a journey for me from the darkness to the light,” Parker said during a proclamation signing ceremony at the White House attended by dozens, including other family members, members of Congress and civil rights leaders.
“Back then in the darkness, I could never imagine the moment like this, standing in the light of wisdom, grace and deliverance,” he said.
With the stroke of Biden’s pen, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, located across three sites in two states, became federally-protected places. Before signing the proclamation, the president said he marvels at the courage of the Till family to “find faith and purpose in pain.”
“Today, on what would have been Emmett’s 82nd birthday, we add another chapter in the story of remembrance and healing,” Biden said...
On Tuesday, reaction poured in from other elected officials and from the civil rights organizing community. The Rev. Al Sharpton said the Till national monument designation tells him “that out of pain comes power.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jefferies said the monument “places the life and legacy of Emmett Till among our nation’s most treasured memorials.”
“Black history is American history,” he said in a written statement...
Till-Mobley demanded that Emmett’s mutilated remains be taken back to Chicago for a public, open casket funeral that was attended by tens of thousands of people. Graphic images taken of Emmett’s remains, sanctioned by his mother, were published by Jet magazine and fueled the Civil Rights Movement...
Altogether, the Till national monument will include 5.7 acres (2.3 hectares) of land and two historic buildings. The Mississippi sites are Graball Landing, the spot where Emmett’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River just outside of Glendora, Mississippi, and the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Emmett’s killers were tried...
The Illinois site is Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, where Emmett’s funeral was held in September 1955...
Mississippi state Sen. David Jordan, 90, was a freshman at Mississippi Valley State College in 1955 when he attended part of the trial of the two men charged with killing Emmett. As a state senator for the past 30 years, Jordan, who is Black, spearheaded fundraising for a statue of Emmett Till that was dedicated last year in Greenwood, Mississippi, a few miles from where the teenager was abducted.
On Tuesday, Jordan praised Biden for creating the Till national monument.
“It’s one of the greatest honors that a president could pay to a person, 14, who lost his life in Mississippi that’s created a movement that changed America,” Jordan told the AP."

Before and After....... but before all this there was that adventure in the lake.
Thomas Jay Ruger, South Carolina inmate 371483, born 1994, incarceration intake December 2022 at age 28, scheduled for release June 2026
Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Trafficking Meth
On Sunday, January 2, 2022, Greenwood County (South Carolina) deputies chased a man who fled from a truck that he was driving and dove into Lake Greenwood to avoid arrest.
Thomas Jay Ruger, and Brandy Nicole Cockrell Young, were arrested. Both were charged with trafficking in meth or cocaine base; possession of narcotic in schedule I(b), (c), LSD and schedule II and possession of other controlled substance in schedule I-V. Ruger was also charged with two counts each of driving under suspension and failure to stop for blue light (FTSBL).
Earlier that day, a Greenwood County deputy spotted a man driving a truck and knew he had active warrants from other law enforcement agencies. He tried to stop the man, but he fled from officers and led deputies in a car chase into neighboring Laurens County.
Eventually the driver opened the door to the pickup truck and jumped from the moving truck and he ran and subsequently dove into Lake Greenwood, trying to swim across the lake. Officers took a woman in the truck into custody and eventually detained the man and brought him back to his truck.
The distance he was attempting to swim was estimated to be about 1/3 of a mile (or 1/2 a kilometer). Each time the man would see deputies waiting for him at the water's edge he would change direction. After several course changes he eventually came ashore into the hands of waiting deputies.
(Lake Greenwood is an artificial lake, composed of impounded water behind a hydroelectric dam. The surface area of the lake is 18 square miles/46 square kilometers with an average depth of 22 feet/7 meters.)
Inside the truck, officers found plastic baggies with about 11 grams of a substance that tested positive for meth, along with pills in the woman’s purse and other baggies. The man and woman told officers the drugs belonged to the other person, so deputies decided charge both of them in connection with the drugs.
At court proceedings almost a year later in November 2022, Ruger pleased guilty and was sentenced.
