Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Gundogan, but knowing how incompetent they are, they'll let him go and not bring in someone in his place. How can they think about selling Gundogan first and not do everything they can to get Ferran out? I don't know what to expect until the end of the transfer window, but the way things are going, it's only going to get worse.

I don't understand how we can sign Gundogan (not sure about the spellings lol) who's a free agent but can't sign Messi who's also a free agent without selling players.

Or is Gundogan's registration in La Liga is what depends on selling players.

Well, first of, I don't really know shit about it, but here's what I understood/my two cents. We still have to sell players. We got till August, 31st to do that, so there's time, but to be very clear, we can't do anything if we don't sell. Issue is, players - Kessié, Fati, Torres, whomever - don't want to leave for x, y or z. That's an actual real problem which leaves us pretty much hands tied.

As for Messi, there was 1) blurred areas over the willingness on both parts and 2) the time pressure. We know that Leo truthfully wanted to go back, but we can't really know for sure that Barça's board wanted. We know there was actual doubts over it, some people for it, and some against. While Laporta seemed to want to get him back to not ternish is presidency, it's all surface level, the man is a politician first. We can't know what he thought/did behind the scenes (cf: Aug 2021). It's a possibility that they never really meant to register Messi in the first place and used his name to get LaLiga's green light faster to register Gavi, Gundogan et co. Also possible that they really wanted to get him.

The second and main problem tho is much more simple: time. Leo wanted his future settled at the beginning of June, something that was simply not possible for the club in the state they were in (still are). Gundogan, who was also a free agent, waited and was able to get signed weeks after. Now does this mean Messi, if he'd waited, would've been registered? Not even :)) there was something about La Liga pulling up a whole "Messi's ex salary at La Liga/ or Ligue 1 / or the player's precedent status does not allow his wage to be lower than xxx" which is something we're not even sure existed.

In short:

Barça's economic situation make for insane instability + we still need to sell players.

Gundogan is free agent + waited longer + lower wages bc no antecedent with La Liga or no precedent v high wages at City (was paid some 7m a year in comparison to Leo's 35M a year at PSG).

Messi was free agent + time limit (has already been fucked over by Laporta & the club and didn't want to renew the experience) + wanted to get lower wages but didn't know if La Liga would allow + these wages would have necessited lots of players to lower their own or be sold, which Leo didn't want + didn't know if Barça actually tried to get him or used him to greenlight sponsors/viability plan.

With some other players, it would've been more simple, like Gundogan, but for him, very blurred situation. Messi's depth of history with Barça and La Liga and his status as a player is both the biggest strength in his possible signing and its biggest weakness.
