Dating from the 15th C, Death  wields a sickle and  dances, in turn, before a cardinal, a king, an emperor and a pope. This was a common medieval theme, emphasising the irrelevance of rank and power in the face of universal human mortality- Hexham Abbey, UK

Bath House Tile from Hexham, England dated to the 1st Century CE on display at the Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum in Hexham, England

Large quantities of tile were discovered during the excavation of the Vindolanda pre-Hadrianic bath house, The tiles were probably manufactured on site ar Vindolanda. When they were laid out to dry numerous small animals walked over the damp clay, leaving footprints. Over 300 animal prints have been identified, representing cat, pig, cattle and sheep or goat.

Other impressions on the tiles include human finger prints, textile prints (where the tile carrier has pressed the tile against their rough apron or tunic) and grafitti.

What The Hex ! por Stapleton Road Por Flickr: It was an early start for me from my hotel in Carlisle to bag this shot of 66737 working the 6S45 0625 North Blyth to Fort William Alcan. Because of weekend east coast main line maintenance works, services were diverted over the Tyne Valley Line which included the alcans which frequently did not run on a Saturday. No prises for originality on this shot but having never been to Hexham before I opted for a safe angle. The rising sun had just cleared a cloud bank but had not fully illuminated the shady corridor created by the trees except for the glint.

Toilet Seat from Hexham, England dated to around 213 CE on display at the Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum in Hexham, England

This is a very rare example of a Roman toilet seat. The wood is alder and the seat was re-used to cover a bad patch on a floor. The seat's conservation cost was covered by Tosca & Wiiloughby, modern makers of toilet seats.

A wonderful lunch at Bassenthwaite Lake Station (a lovely cafe in converted train carriages!) followed by a crazy drive through the snow to get to tonight's gig in Hexham. Rosa loved having lunch on the train - although she did keep yelling "chooo choooo!", and telling us in a concerned way that the train wasn't moving yet. Now setting up for the gig, which is most definitely still on for anyone wondering.
