So I did a thing ... I've been slowly build up my leather working skills because I got the bug... Slowly working on more and more complicated things and/or trying different techniques to hone some skills ... First big goal is to build a backpack similar to one that an amazing friend has - which has been inspiring me for about 6-7 months now. :-) Along the way, I was finally able to get my new camera (after 222 days on a waiting list) ... and so I decided to try my hand at making my very own leather strap for it ...

I'm quite please with the results ... It definitely has that "home made" vibe to it as you can see with reasonable inspection of my finishing ... but that doesn't matter to me ...

As for materials, Horween Chromexcel Leather in Black, Maine Thread, Seiwa Tokonole for the edge finishing and 7+ hours or work, including 5+ hours of hand stitching...

And the solid brass split rings are a nod back to the early days of Leica and their use of brass is making their camera bodies...

Overall I am quite happy....

God, I want to do the Stitchdown Patina Thunderdome. Informally, though--I don't think seven months of Stitchdown Premium membership would be worth my time, even just to qualify for the Thunderdome.

FYI: the Stitchdown Patina Thunderdome is a seven-month challenge to intentionally wear a new-to-you pair of leather welted footwear; it's put on by the shoe website Stitchdown. The goal is to make your shoes patina (change color and develop character due to sun and environment exposure, including scratches and damage to a degree) as much as possible. Stitchdown Premium members vote on whose pairs made the most impressive transformations.

Some of these transformations are WILD. This was the #1 winner for last year's Thunderdome--a pair of Wesco Tombstone Engineers in a vegetable-tanned leather (Horween Natural Essex). Vegetable-tanned leather like this starts off nude and can patina so much with sun exposure and wear.

BOOT POST

Just a little roundup of a couple Grant Stone suede drops and a new Truman last.

Grant Stone did 2 suede drops this week, each available on a loafer and one of their dressier boots. We'll ignore the loafers because loafers are stupid.

But a couple days ago they announced their Edward service boot in a black suede with a black wedge sole. It's fine. Classy. I just don't love the wedge sole again though. The black definitely looks better than white would but its still very sneaker-y to me. Which might be a good thing if thats what you're looking for!

And then today they dropped the Cap Toe boot (basically the same as the edward just with a cap toe) in a taupe suede. This one is actually pretty nice looking I think. I wish it had a lighter stain on the welt and heel stack because the all-dark sole is pretty aggressive looking next to the light suede but I don't hate it! This suede will probably pick up dust and dirt easily and get dirtier/greyer over time in a neat way.

Both of those are $360 I just forgot to put the price on the pictures.

AND THEN.

Truman launched an MTO for a new leather: Color 8 Cypress. color 8 is Horween tannery's oxblood color, they run it on their chromexel and cordovan also. And Cypress seems to be a pretty rugged leather, very thick and leaning matte in finish. Very pretty.

More interesting than the leather though is that this is a new last for Truman, with a pointer/lower volume toe for a slightly dressier look than their other boots. It's still pretty work-booty but starting to lean in sort of a White's MP direction I think.

Im gonna be honest there are enough dressy-ish boots on the market already, I like Truman's more rugged aesthetic and am not very interested in this last. But it's nice! I just don't really want it.
