1. Full-Spectrum Grow Lights Aren’t Optimized for Plants
A major problem with many full spectrum vertical grow light is that they are designed to give the appearance of daylight without being custom-tailored for rigorous plant growth.

When you hear that the diodes in your full spectrum grow light are 3,000k to 4,500k, or 5,000k+, this degree of Kelvin (K) refers to how “cool” or “warm” your light is in appearance.
Our understanding of plant photobiology has come a long way. We understand much more about plants than to be using human lighting metrics to design our grow lights.
Our goal as growers is to improve the lighting characteristics most important for plant growth. This means not only getting enough PAR light, but also the right mix of light spectra, which brings us to problem #2.
The thinking behind many full spectrum LED grow lights on the market is that by creating a spectral distribution similar to sunlight, your plants will grow well. A decent theory, except that full spectrum grow lights are not actually similar to the sun.
We can see below that the sun’s radiation includes much more than the visible or PAR wavebands.
Sunlight itself is complex, and many scientists are still working to understand it today. You can see that sunlight also contains ultraviolet (UV) and infrared light (as well as x-rays, radio waves, and others, but we’ll leave those alone for now).
Although PAR is the most important light for photosynthesis, plants still respond to radiation outside of the PAR spectrum. For instance, UV light elicits protective compounds in plants similar to the way humans become tanned in the presence of UV.
Plants also use a type of infrared light called “far-red light” to induce a shade avoidance response, causing them to stretch and can induce early flowering.
To create a light source that elicits plant response the same way the sun does would be too costly and downright impossible given current grow light technology. Nor would you want to create such a grow light, which takes us to problem #3.
3. Full-Spectrum Grow Lights Are Not Dynamic Like the Sun
Not only would it be too costly to create an actual full spectrum quantum board grow light, but if such a thing even existed, its performance would still not accurately reflect what’s happening in nature.
The sun’s spectrum is in constant flux due to changes in weather or its position in the sky relative to earth. In the graphic above, you can see how sunlight spectra change throughout the day or in different weather conditions.
Because of this phenomenon, it’s best to think about the interaction between sunlight and plants as a continually changing process.
If you hang your full spectrum grow lights in a greenhouse, you will still reap the benefits (and disadvantages) of this natural process from the sun. But if you take those same full-spectrum lights and hang them indoors, they will not behave like the sun.
Photomorphogenic responses by plants are co-regulated, which means that certain expressions of the plant may turn on or off based on the amount of light within one waveband relative to another.
Photosynthesis depends upon the absorption of light by photoreceptors and pigments in the leaves of plants. The most well-known of these pigments is chlorophyll-a, but there are many accessory pigments that also contribute to photosynthesis.
The relative light absorption of chlorophyll pigments as shown in the graph to the right is one of the reasons why red light has become popular among LED grow lights. Not all PAR light contributes to photosynthesis equally, though we now understand that other wavebands of light such as green, do play an important role in this process.
Since photoreceptors in plants also have their own ranges for light absorption, they co-regulate processes that create plants’ form and structure depending on the spectral mix they receive.
For instance, higher ratios of blue light can induce more robust root growth, more favorable plant biochemistry, and a hardier structure. But these effects may not be as pronounced when more red light is introduced.
Thus, the ever-changing spectrum of the sun is constantly signaling to plants to change their form and structure based on the natural conditions of the environment.
But before you rush and begin moving your grow room outdoors, let’s consider why plants don’t need the full spectrum of sunlight. For starters, plants don’t need UV or infrared light to live. Also, in a controlled environment, plants are given ideal conditions to grow in and often don’t need to compete with other species to live.
Plants only require light in the 400 to 700-nanometer range to photosynthesize. So, you’ll want to choose a grow light that produces your desired results, most often higher yields and better quality for your plants.
What is the Best Light Spectrum for Plant Growth?
By now you must be wondering:
“If I can’t mimic sunlight, then what light spectrum should I use?”. The answer is both simple and quite complex.
Plants only require PAR light for photosynthesis. So, if your grow light is optimized within the PAR spectrum, you’re going to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to minimizing electrical costs while maximizing plant health.
Beyond PAR, it’s important to choose a light spectrum that’s:
best for the environment you’re growing in (greenhouse or indoors)
tailored to your plant’s growth phase (propagation, vegetative, flowering, or finishing)
or specific to the cultivar being grown
Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights vs. Other Grow Light Options

Learn About LED Lighting
What are LEDs and how do they work?
LED stands for light emitting diode. LED lighting products produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. How do they work? An electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs and the result is visible light. To prevent performance issues, the heat LEDs produce is absorbed into a heat sink.
Lifetime of LED Lighting Products
The useful life of LED lighting products is defined differently than that of other light sources, such as incandescent or compact fluorescent lighting (CFL). LEDs typically do not “burn out” or fail. Instead, they experience ‘lumen depreciation’, wherein the brightness of the LED dims slowly over time. Unlike incandescent bulbs, LED “lifetime” is established on a prediction of when the light output decreases by 30 percent.
LEDs are incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications. Small in size, LEDs provide unique design opportunities. Some LED bulb solutions may physically resemble familiar light bulbs and better match the appearance of traditional light bulbs. Some outdoor LED light fixtures may have LEDs built in as a permanent light source. There are also hybrid approaches where a non-traditional “bulb” or replaceable light source format is used and specially designed for a unique fixture. LEDs offer a tremendous opportunity for innovation in lighting form factors and fit a wider breadth of applications than traditional lighting technologies.
LEDs and Heat
LEDs use heat sinks to absorb the heat produced by the LED and dissipate it into the surrounding environment. This keeps LEDs from overheating and burning out. Thermal management is generally the single most important factor in the successful performance of an LED over its lifetime. The higher the temperature at which the LEDs are operated, the more quickly the light will degrade, and the shorter the useful life will be.
LED products use a variety of unique heat sink designs and configurations to manage heat. Today, advancements in materials have allowed manufacturers to design LED bulbs that match the shapes and sizes of traditional incandescent bulbs. Regardless of the heat sink design, all LED products that have earned the ENERGY STAR have been tested to ensure that they properly manage the heat so that the light output is properly maintained through the end of its rated life.
LED lighting differs from incandescent and fluorescent in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting is more efficient, versatile, and lasts longer.
LEDs are “directional” light sources, which means they emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and CFL, which emit light and heat in all directions. That means LEDs are able to use light and energy more efficiently in a multitude of applications. However, it also means that sophisticated engineering is needed to produce an LED bulb that shines light in every direction.
Common LED colors include amber, red, green, and blue. Incandescent bulbs produce light using electricity to heat a metal filament until it becomes “white” hot or is said to incandesce. As a result, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat.

In the world of lighting, LED high bay light is a fixture that you would find in a warehouse, a factory, a gymnasium, or any large open area with relatively high ceilings. The developed world is starting to learn that the power source is far from infinite.
Some companies are not waiting to see the bottom of the barrel, and are exploring alternatives that range from replacement power sources to energy demand reduction. Solar-powered lighting
Solar electric lighting systems do in fact connect to a truly "infinite" power source - the sun. However, as we all know, this source is intermittent. In the case of solar outdoor lighting, the power source is inversely related to the load (the lights turn on when the sun goes down). This relationship leads to an important conclusion; the system must rely on energy storage (e.g. batteries), unless it remains connected to grid.
Now in order for a solar lighting system to perform reliably, the solar panel and battery must be sized for the period of longest nights, shortest days and cloudiest weather, all of which occur at the same time each year (see figure 2). Historically, the solar industry has addressed this worst-case scenario by seeking out the most efficient lumen per watt DC lamps and over-sizing the system for the rest of the year. That translated to DC fluorescent bulbs, bigger solar panels, more batteries, higher costs and less-than-appealing appearance.
This approach confined the market for solar LED light to areas closer to the equator with highest average levels of solar irradiation and temperatures that did not affect the performance and lifetime of the DC fluorescent bulbs. It also left the markets in the higher latitudes, typically with higher per capita wealth levels and greater lighting needs rather under-served.

Advantages of LED Lights-Why should I use

LEDs generally consume very low amounts of power.  Improved Safety with LEDs:
Safety is perhaps the most often overlooked advantage when it comes to LED lighting. The number one hazard when it comes to lighting is the emission of heat. LEDs emit almost no forward heat while traditional bulbs like incandescents convert more than 90% of the total energy used to power them directly into heat. That means only 10% of the energy powering incandescent lights is used for light (which also makes them extremely inefficient compared to LEDs). Additionally, because LEDs consume less power they can operate effectively on low-voltage electrical systems. These are LED Light Lifespan: Easily the most significant advantage of LEDs, when compared to traditional lighting solutions, is the long lifespan. The average LED lasts 50,000 operating hours to 100,000 operating hours or more. That is 2-4 times as long as most fluorescent, metal halide, and even sodium vapor lights. It is more than 40 times as long as the average incandescent bulb.
Less frequent replacement means two big things: lower maintenance costs in terms of labor and lower costs for replacement parts (because the bulbs simply do not fail for a long time).

LED Lights are Physically Small: The actual LED device is extremely small. Small power devices can be less than a tenth of a single mm2 while larger power devices can still be as small as an mm2. Their small size makes LEDs incredibly adaptable to an infinite number of lighting applications. Different uses for LEDs include a wide spectrum from their roots in circuit board lighting and traffic signals to modern mood lighting, residential, and commercial property applications, and even major stadium lighting. LEDs Have Great Color Rendering Index (CRI):
CRI is a measurement of a light’s ability to reveal the actual color of objects as compared to an ideal light source (natural light). High CRI is generally a desirable characteristic (although of course, it depends on the required application). LEDs generally have very high (good) ratings when it comes to CRI.
LEDs Generate Directional Emissions: LED technology emits light for only 180 degrees. Every other type of light emits light 360 degrees around the source. 360-degree emissions necessitate accessory devices to reflect and/or redirect the light. This drives up the costs for the system in general and inevitably results in losses meaning that the device is necessarily less efficient than it otherwise would be. Consider a light that emits light into the ceiling - that is your standard bulb. The problem is that you’re trying to illuminate the room, not the ceiling. LEDs solve this problem completely and give the savings back in terms of the system’s overall energy efficiency. 
LEDs Have Tremendous Design Flexibility:
Because LEDs are so small they can be used in virtually any application you can think of. They can be combined in bunches for a traditional bulb, used in isolation as a small device light, or strung out in sequence in a linear fashion. Just about everything you can think of can be done with LEDs.
LEDs are Solid State Lights (SSLs): LEDs are solid-state lights. This means that the traditional glass bulb surrounding the light is entirely unnecessary. 
LED Dimming Capability:
LEDs can operate at virtually any percentage of their rated power (0 to 100%). Of note, they do require hardware specific to LED technology to dim (meaning you cannot use the dimming equipment for an incandescent bulb or other traditional lighting technology). A positive of operating LEDs at less than full power is that they get more efficient as the power is reduced. This also increases the total lifespan of the light itself. Both of those advantages are absent with technologies like metal halides that get less efficient at lower power and in many cases cannot be dimmed at all.
LEDs Provide Instantaneous Turn On and Do Not Have Issues with Frequent Switching:
LEDs turn on and off instantaneously. There is no warm-up period like in the case of metal halide lamps. Additionally, frequent switching doesn’t cause degradation in the device. 
LED Lights are Environmentally Safe:
LEDs do not have the environmental issues common to traditional lighting solutions like fluorescent or mercury vapor lights. Both of these traditional solutions contain mercury internal to the bulb and thus require special handling at the end of the product’s useful lifespan. None of these considerations are necessary with LEDs.
LEDs Produce Virtually Zero UV Emissions:
LEDs emit the vast majority of their energy in the visible spectrum, a small amount in the infrared spectrum, and virtually none in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum. This means that LEDs can safely and reliably illuminate UV-sensitive items like art that will break down and degrade over time if exposed to this type of emission. 
LEDs Operate on Very Low Voltage:
In many cases, LEDs operate on very low voltages. This makes them suitable for use in outdoor lighting applications where another lighting might not meet code such as with oceanfront homes where the ground level of the property is in a flood zone.
LEDs Operate Well in Cold and Hot Temperatures:
LEDs work well in a wide range of operating temperatures without significant degradation. 
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT):
LEDs are available in a wide range of correlated color temperature (CCT) values. They can be purchased with a “warm,” yellowish glow, as a “cool,” white light, and a variety of other options.

But first, let's look at some of the standout features of the AC50S that make it perfect for camping and emergencies.
10W Wireless Qi Charging Pad
Your smartphone is probably the most important item you have during an emergency, so it's critical that you can keep it powered up. If you've lost or damaged the charging cable, you're in trouble.

Not so with the Bluetti AC50S, which includes a 10W wireless Qi charging pad on the top. To use it, turn on the main power and the DC output, then put your smartphone or tablet down (though some devices charge better when placed off-center, depending on where their Qi receiver is embedded).

Any smartphone from the last three or four years should be Qi-enabled, so this could be a real lifesaver. While it usually won't charge as fast as a cables, it's certainly more convenient.
Emergency SOS Flashlight
Built-in to the rear side of the AC50S is a large LED lighting panel. It features two brightness settings and an SOS mode. The exact lumens brightness isn't published, but the highest setting is bright enough to be painful to look at directly. The handle is positioned in such a way that the light can face forward when carried normally, so you needn't take a separate flashlight on your travels.

The SOS mode is something we hope you'll never need, but it's reassuring to know it's there if you do. In this mode, which operates at full brightness, the morse code for SOS is continuously repeated.

For either mode of operation, the AC50S must be powered on first, then the flashlight activated.
Bluetti AC50S Design
Measuring 11.6 x 7.5 x 7.7 inches and weighing 13.5lbs, the Bluetti AC50S sits at the extreme of what could be considered easily portable. The carry handle easily unfolds from its inset position in the lid and feels quite comfortable to hold without digging into your fingers. I would happily take this on a short hike, but hours of trekking around with it would certainly get tiring.

The corners of the AC50S are softened with a thin blue rubber bumper, and along with four rubber feet, ensure it can take the hustle and bustle of an outdoor camping trip without damage. It also means if you knock the relatively large device into your legs or waist when carrying it, the blow might be softened a little.
  Don't mistake these rubber bumpers for proper ruggedization, though. As with all large battery packs, the AC50S should not be thrown into a fire, pierced, shot, dropped off a cliff edge, or fed to a bear. The multiple power sockets and cooling grills also mean it isn't waterproof in the slightest. However, it is apparently made from flame retardent plastics, so you needn't worry about placing it in the general vicinity of a campfire. Not too close, though.

A clear dual-color LCD shows the remaining battery as five segments (each helpfully labeled in 20 percent increments), as well as the total wattage currently coming in and going out, with AC and DC reported separately. Though you're unlikely to hit the maximum 300W if you're only charging laptops and smartphones, this information does allow you to make a quick calculation of how long the battery will last.
Sockets, Ports, and Plugs Galore
Considering the diminutive size of the Bluetti AC50S, there's a bewildering number of sockets to be found.
There are four USB-A ports, each running at a maximum of 3A. Sitting above them is a single USB-C PD port, running at a maximum of 45W. This is slightly lower than most laptops' power requirements when running full speed but should be enough for light tasks or charging with the lid closed (if you didn't bring your AC adaptor, that is).

You'll find two small barrel-jack DC ports on the right of the display, running at 12V, 3A maximum. Further right of this is the regulated 12V car accessory port (or cigarette lighter, as we call it in the UK).
As we reviewed the UK model, you'll also see two three-prong UK plug sockets, which run at ~240VAC. A European model and US model is also available, running at ~110VAC. The maximum continuous output in either model is 300W, 450W peak.
How Long Will It Take to Charge?
The included AC wall charger is 90W, so this will charge in approximately six to seven hours. Also included in the box is a charging cable for use with your car battery from the 12V port.
Solar input is limited to 120W, with an open-circuit voltage of up to 40V. Although an adaptor cable for industry-standard MC4 solar connectors is included, these limitations mean most static panels (such as those taken from a rooftop install) can't be used. Of course, the AC50S is designed to be portable, so this isn't a big deal. For static installations, you should look at the larger Maxoak backup batteries.

Thankfully, Maxoak also sells a portable solar panel perfectly matched to the input rating of the AC50S. We reviewed the SP120 a few months back. Under ideal conditions, the SP120 could charge the AC50S in as little as four to five hours, faster than the AC adaptor. Realistically, it would likely take six hours to a day, given varied cloud cover, the angle of the sun, and other factors.
You can charge and discharge the Bluetti AC50S simultaneously without issue.
Is 300W Continuous and 450W Peak Enough for You?
300W is plenty enough to power laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other USB devices—all at the same time. If that's your intended use case, you needn't worry about the peak rating.
But if you plan to use the AC sockets, you should take note of it. Most small appliances will comfortably run on less than 300W continuous. Still, some such as air conditioners or fridges will surge to five or seven times their rating momentarily when switched on. If they exceed 450W, the Bluetti AC50S will display error 27 and require a restart. Therefore, you must know the peak or surge rating for any appliances you hope to power with the AC50S.

In some cases, there may be a workaround, so you can still use the appliance. For instance, set your coolbox or mini-fridge at room temperature first when switching it on, then slowly decrease the temperature. If your appliance surges beyond 300W but less than 450W, this should be fine as long as it doesn't continue for more than 120 seconds.
How Long Will The AC50S Battery Power Last?
To work out how many hours the AC50S will last you, divide the capacity (500Wh) by the power you're expecting to draw. For example, a 50W CPAP machine could run for around 10 hours. If you're unsure, plug in the device: the helpful indicator on the front of the AC50S will tell you exactly how much power it's using, from which you can calculate. Bear in mind this value may fluctuate. For instance, when I tested a deep freezer, it varied anywhere from 5W to 110W.
For devices like a smartphone, it's more helpful to think about how many charges you'll get from the AC50S. An iPhone 12 could be charged anywhere from 20 to 40 times; a typical laptop will get at least seven charges.
Do You Actually Need "Regulated" 12V?
If you're shopping for backup batteries based purely on color, or if you don't care about the 12V car port output being regulated, then I've got good news: the previous AC50 model comes in orange or grey, and is available for as little as $350 (use the coupon code MAXOAK100 to get that extra $12 off). The only difference (other than color) is that the 12V output is not "regulated." That means you might not quite get 12V. You might get 11V or 11.5V. For some appliances, getting at least 12V minimum is critical, and without that, they won't power on. For others, it won't matter. And if you're not going to use the 12V at all, it obviously doesn't matter.

There's a lot to like about the AC50S, and if we had a single complaint, it would be that the AC converter is slightly limited at 300W continuous, with 450W peak meaning some appliances won't work.

I’ve long held that connected lighting is one of the most sensible smart home upgrades you can invest in — in part, because it really doesn’t need to be much of an investment. Perfectly decent smart bulbs can be had for less than the price of a pizza, and once you buy in, you’ll use them each and every day, complete with the convenience and comfort of automated lighting that you can control with your voice.

There’s an exception though, or an asterisk perhaps, and that’s smart bulbs that can change colors. Even as the price of LED lights fell steadily over the past five years or so, color-changing bulbs from well-established names like Philips Hue and Lifx continued to sell at a steep premium. Even if you caught a good sale, you’d be lucky in most cases to get one for anything less than $30.
Things seem to be turning a corner in 2020, though — most notably with the Philips Wiz Connected Smart Wi-Fi LED. Available at Home Depot for just $13 each, it’s a full-fledged color-changer that needs no hub, and it supports voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts. Its colors aren’t quite as bright or vivid as you’ll get from our top performer in the color-changing category, the Lifx Mini LED, but they still do an admirable job at splashing accurate, eye-catching shades across your walls. Despite the fact that it doesn’t work with the Philips Hue app or with Hue’s immense list of third-party integrations, the bulb still finds plenty to offer via the surprisingly well-featured Wiz app. 
All of that makes these bulbs a terrific and worthy value pick if you’re interested in changing up the colors in your home — and newly announced bulb shapes like a candelabra bulb and an outdoor-rated PAR38 bulb make it easy to expand your setup to include any fixture you like. If you’re interested in deeper integrations with third-party products and services, or advanced features that can sync your lights with your TV or with your music, then you’ll still need to spend up on something from Philips Hue, Lifx or Nanoleaf — but for simple, voice-activated, color-changing light that you can control and program from your phone, these Wiz Connected bulbs will do the trick for a fraction of the cost.
Light bulb basics
For the most part, the Philips Wiz Connected LED works like any other light bulb — just screw it in and turn it on when you want light. The default setting puts out a claimed 800 lumens of brightness at a yellowy color temperature of 2,700 K. That’s the same as you’ll get from a standard 60-watt incandescent light bulb, but since this is an LED we’re talking about, the power draw is much less — just 8.5 watts. 
Those energy savings are worth noting. If you turned the Philips Wiz Connected LED on at full brightness and left it on for an entire year, it’d only add a little over $8 to your energy bill. For comparison, that old-fashioned, 60-watt incandescent would add almost $60 to your bill over the same stretch. Replace a bulb like that with the Philips Wiz Connected LED, then use it for an average of three hours per day — it’ll pay for itself in energy savings in about two years, then keep on shining for another 20 years.

As for the brightness, I’m still working from home without access to my lighting lab, so I can’t double-check the specific lumen count just yet. Still, in comparison with other bulbs I’ve tested in the past, including the Philips Hue White LED, it’s easy to see that the Philips Wiz Connected LED does just fine at default settings. That’s much better than the original Wiz LED, which was released before 2019, when the Hong Kong-based startup was purchased by Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting). That bulb was too dim at its default setting, and only hit peak brightness at an awkward white light color temperature of 4,200 K.
The colors are much less bright than the white light settings, which is to be expected. What’s important is that they’re bright enough to make an impact, and for the most part, accurate in tone — though, it struggles to put out bold shades of yellow or orange. In some cases, the presets used by Alexa and Google aren’t the greatest, either. Ask either assistant for pink, for instance, and you’ll get milky white light.
Color quality is mostly accurate, but the bulb’s palette has a few weak spots.

Ugly-looking pinks aside, stalwarts like red, blue and green come through just fine — and if you open the Wiz app, you’ll find a color selector with dozens of different settings, including oddball Crayola rejects like “Razzmatazz,” “Free Speech Green” and “Gorse.” What’s extra odd is that Alexa and Google seem to recognize some of these settings (including a great-looking “Deep Pink”), but not all of them. Google Assistant seemed to recognize more of them, at least, sort of. When I asked it to jump to the “Macaroni and Cheese” setting, it triggered that ugly, milky white again — but that’s better than I got from Alexa, which just looked at me funny before adding mac and cheese to my grocery list.
The app also features a number of “dynamic” color settings that cycle through various shades. Some, like “Ocean” or “Forest,” follow a theme, while others just dance between random colors for romantic mood lighting, party-appropriate dance floor lights, or a simulated candle-like flicker. My big quibble here? There’s no way to activate these with your voice or via any third-party integration. You either have to turn them on in the app, or buy a physical Wiz remote and assign them to its customizable preset buttons.
The Wiz app lets you choose between a long list of simple and dynamic color presets, as well as timed fades and a full color selector.

An app that’s filled with tricks
With a clean interface and plenty of guidance, the Wiz app is simple enough to use — but what’s striking about it is the number of features it boasts, some of which you won’t even find in the Philips Hue or Lifx apps.
You’ll start by turning your bulb on and beginning the pairing process, which requires you to connect to the bulb’s Wi-Fi network so the app can add it onto your home network. It’s especially simple because the bulb uses its color capabilities to signal you along the way. For instance, when you set the bulb to pairing mode, it’ll start pulsing purple once its Wi-Fi network is ready for you to connect.
With the bulb up and running, you’ll specify the room it’s in and give it a name. From there, you’ll be able to turn it on and off and dim it up and own from the home screen. To change the color, tap whatever color is listed as “now playing” to pull up a full list of preset options, as well as the color selector where those oddly named shades are located. I just wish Wiz would relocate this color selector to the home screen so you don’t need an extra tap and scroll in order to pull it up.
Tapping the little gear icon pulls up the system settings, as well as the specific light settings for all of your bulbs. There are tons of neat features tucked away here, including an option to customize how long it takes for the light to fade between changes, and also an energy use tracker. You won’t get either of those with the Philips Hue app.
The Wiz app features a bounty of interesting features, including scenes, schedules, energy monitoring, automated vacation lighting, custom fade durations and a “Rhythm Mode” that lets you plot out a day’s worth of repeatable lighting changes.

Other features include the usual options for saving scenes and for scheduling lighting changes, as well as a “Rhythm Mode” that lets you set the lights to automatically cycle between up to five custom settings at different times of the day. The app starts you off with a circadian mode that automatically adjusts the lights between energizing cool white tones when you wake up and relaxing soft white tones in the evening, with a night light for when you’re asleep. If you’d rather build your own Rhythm that automatically triggers Party Mode whenever your work-from-home day is over, hey, more power to you.
What’s especially nice about the feature is the way Wiz visualizes it with a ring-shaped timeline. Once you plot a lighting change on it — say, lights on at 7 a.m. — it’s a cinch to slide that marker around the ring to make fine adjustments to the schedule. It’s similar to the Lifx app’s Day & Dusk feature, which plots lighting changes along a line graph. I like the Wiz approach even better.

As for integrations, the Wiz app supports Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and a handful of other, smaller smart home platforms. The app does a great job of making it easy to connect with them — for instance, when you tap the option for adding Alexa, it’ll switch apps and send you directly to the authentication page in the Alexa app.
The big, missing integration is Apple HomeKit, but you can still use Siri to control these bulbs if you’re willing to use Apple’s Shortcuts app, which lets you trigger your apps with custom Siri commands. It’s a more limited experience than you get with HomeKit, which lets you program and control devices from various brands in Apple’s Home app, but it does the job. For example, I created a shortcut that turns any Wiz lights in my bedroom on just by saying, “Hey Siri, cue the lights.” That’s probably not enough for anyone who’s already seriously invested in Apple HomeKit, but it’s enough for the bulb to say that it supports voice controls by all three of the major voice assistants, so I’ll give it a passing grade.
I also appreciated the Wiz Connected privacy policy, which does a better job than most of explaining the company’s data practices in plain English. Per that policy, the only info Wiz collects when you use its bulbs are unique product identifiers and diagnostic information, as well as things like a Home ID and specific user preferences from using the app. Wiz also says that it does not share user data with any third parties for the purposes of targeted advertising.

The verdict
Color-changing smart bulbs are futuristic and flashy, and they make the smart home fun. That’s why they’ve always been so much more expensive than white light smart bulbs — not because RGB diodes cost a fortune, but because they can have a dramatic impact on the way your home looks and feels. For years, manufacturers have translated that into markup, positioning full-color smart lighting as a luxury.
That’s all well and good for manufacturers, but look back through the last five years of smart home coverage on our site and on others, and count how many times we’ve used pictures of bedrooms and living rooms lit with fancy colors to connote the connected living space. It’s an easy visual for the fun futurism of the smart home, and it’s become one of the first things people imagine when they envision the category as a whole. In other words, these things shouldn’t be seen as a luxury any longer. For many, they’re a staple of the smart home experience.
The Philips Wiz Connected Smart Wi-Fi LED reflects that reality better than any other color-changing smart bulb I’ve tested to date. At $13 each, it’s as affordable as the smart home gets, and with no need for a hub, you can connect it with Alexa, Google or Siri as soon as you screw the thing in. That makes it an excellent pick for beginners, and also a great choice for anyone who’s already invested in a voice-controlled smart home, and who would enjoy expanding the setup to include a fresh pop of color or two.

How To Grow The Biggest Marijuana Buds

After your first successful grow, the next logical question is how can I produce a higher yield next time? The female cannabis plant produces large amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), and the largest concentration of THC is found in the flowers (buds). You may have seen pictures on social media of enormous buds. It's a sight to behold. How did they do it? With a few tweaks, and some basic knowledge your next grow will reward you with a massive yield. In this article we'll look at several ways to produce big, beautiful, marijuana buds with the highest yield possible. Genetics The single most important factor in producing the largest buds, and yield is to choose the right genetics. Several strains have been genetically engineered to produce the largest, and most potent yields. We see new strains appearing every year, produced by some of the top cannabis breeders. Some strains haven't been modified, and are organically predisposed to produce higher yields. When shopping at an online seed-bank such as Seedsman, you'll see yield quantities listed as part of the description. A yield of 500 grams or higher is considered a high yielding cannabis plant. High yielding plants by default have larger terminal buds. Some high yielding, high THC cannabis plants include Pineapple Express and Grapefruit. Indoor grows will have lower yields than outdoor grows. The roots are confined in pots when growing indoors, so the overall plant size, and yield will be smaller. This shouldn't discourage you from growing indoors.

Nutrition Growing large, healthy buds requires a healthy diet. They require the right nutrients, which vary at different stages of growth. Lets assume for the time being that you're using potting soil as a grow medium, as opposed to hydroponics. While there are some benefits for using hydroponics, such as potency, and shorter time to harvest, bud size and overall yield are best achieved using soil. Like all plants, cannabis requires fertilizer which includes nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) (NPK). They also require trace minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, sulfur, and boron. Most commercial potting soil (bags) contain the right combination of fertilizer, nutrients and some organic matter required in the early stages of vegetative growth. This may be sufficient for the first few weeks of growth. The vegetative (growth) stage which can last for 7-8 weeks, requires a different combination of nutrients and fertilizer than the flowering stage. The vegetative stage uses more nitrogen (N), and the flowering (bud) stage uses more phosphorus (P). Commercial nutrients contain ratios of 2-2-4 for vegetation (grow), and 0-6-6 (NPK) for flowering. These quantities, and ratios differ slightly by product. There are several commercial nutrient brands available online that provide different combinations, trace minerals and organic matter for each stage of growth. I suggest adding half the recommended dose when starting a nutrient program. Keep a close eye on your plants, checking for drooping or yellowing leaves. Over fertilizing can destroy your plants, so start slowly. Nutrients are added to water, and used once per week. You should stop adding nutrients 1-2 weeks before the harvest, which is referred to a flushing. Only pure water is used at this late stage. Check the pH of the soil, and water. Cannabis plants require a soil pH of between 6.0–6.5. You can adjust pH levels by using products such as pH UP, and pH DOWN. One of the most overlooked nutrients for flowering is CO2. Carbon dioxide is the most essential element for photosynthesis other than direct sunlight (or LED & HID lights). Adding CO2 to the grow during the flowering stage will greatly enhance the size and quality of your buds. If using a grow tent, or closed grow area a cheap and effective way to add CO2 is using dry ice. Dry ice is simply pure, frozen CO2. You can mount the dry ice above each plant and watch it slowly release CO2 gas as it melts. Once per week is sufficient. Another way to get CO2 is renting a refillable CO2 tank. You can also purchase a CO2 machine, which is more costly. Technically water is a nutrient. Make sure you don't over-water. Feel the soil and determine if its dry, moist or wet. Its genetically advantageous for the survival of the plant's species. The highest concentration of growth hormone is located at the top of the plant. When left alone to grow, cannabis plants will produce one large terminal bud at the top, and several smaller buds lower down on the plant, known as popcorn buds. When you top the plant, you create a bushier, more dense plant. Topping is essential if you want to significantly increase the yield. The plant will grow out evenly into 4 or more terminal buds over the following days and weeks. Topping should be done at the first 3-4 weeks, when the plant is 6-8 inches in height. There should be at least 4 or 5 nodes, with stems and leaves growing out. Cut off the top leaf including its stem down to the top node. Over the next few weeks you'll see new stems and leaves growing out. These will eventually turn into terminal buds. The plant will become more dense and bushier as it matures. This in turn will produce a much higher yield. Trimming Stated previously, if you left the cannabis plant to grow on its own you'll end up with several small, wispy "popcorn" buds growing on the lower part of the plant. They don't get enough light and resources to grow into full sized buds. Because the lower leaves and stems will not produce quality buds, they're pretty much useless. Trimming, or pruning the lower one third of the plant allows the plant's resources to be dedicated to the larger stems, leaves, and buds towards the top. This step will also increase yield. Start trimming the lower part of the plant at 6-8 weeks, toward the end of the vegetative stage. You can start slowly, and re-visit up to the flowering stage as needed. Don't overdo it, or the plant can go into shock. Lighting Providing adequate lighting is essential for proper growth, in the early stages through flowering. A lack of sufficient light in the first few weeks of growth will lead to a weak, sick plants and disappointment down the road. When using fluorescent or LED lighting in the vegetative stage, make sure the lights are no more than 2 inches above the plant. These lights run cool and won't burn the plant. If the lights are set too high, the plant stretches higher, getting closer to the light to meet its lighting requirements. Stretching leads to weak stems, roots and the plant will not be strong enough to flower. If your using HID lighting such as metal halide in the vegetative stage, you'll need to mount these 24-36 inches higher, as they give off a lot of heat, and have a much higher intensity or lumen output. Metal halide lamps are generally used in commercial grows. Its also important to adjust lighting during the flowering stage. To avoid burning the plants when using high pressure sodium lamps (HPS), the height should be raised enough to avoid burning the plants. Depending on the power, HPS lamps can be mounted as high as 36 inches above the plants. The reflectors spread light evenly, and the intensity gets light down to the bottom of the plants. Over lighting can be as bad as under lighting. Commercial growers tend to use 600 watt HPS, while a small grow of 6 plants or less will get away with a 400, or 250 watt lamp. Many small time, personal growers choose LED lighting for 6 plants or less. LED lights run cool, are energy efficient, and fairly inexpensive. Camping is one of the best ways to get away from the stress of daily life. At your campsite, you and your family can sleep and dine outdoors in a natural and refreshing environment. Whether you are planning to go on your first camping trip or you want to return to camping after a long break, the following tips and ideas will help you to have a great time.
1. Plan Your Activities in Advance
Create a list of camping activities for you and your children. This will help you avoid boredom and prevent the children from getting involved in dangerous stunts. A little brainstorming will help you to generate enough ideas to last for 1 to 3 days. Take a football, kite, board games, fishing gear, a compass and maps for learning and paint and craft items. Incorporate the “location” into the activities. Finds and paint pine cones if available to be a part of an upcoming holiday, bring a book on plants and have a scavenger hunt for the “safe” ones. Be creative in your teaching.

Although June may seem like a nice time to go shopping for camp gear because of the variety of camping gear that will be on display, don’t do it. At this time, tents and other camping gear will be sold at peak prices. Instead, you should buy camping gear in early spring or winter. Many retailers also try to sell off their camp gear at the end of the summer, so you could get very good bargains at that time.
5. Prepare for Night Lighting

You can even practice cooking breakfast meals like cinnamon roll-ups in your yard at home.
Before you set out, prepare some of the food at home. It will be easier to cut vegetables, marinate the meat and wrap potatoes in foil before going to your camp. Pack these into your cooler and set out the food meal by meal. Remember to take all the condiments and utensils you will need to serve each meal.
8. Leave No Trace
Make it your responsibility to practice the principles of “leave no trace” any time you go camping. These principles have been set out to keep campsites tidy. So you can return back month after month, year after year and still have a clean, safe and hygienic place to set up your tent. With the ever increasing number of people going for camping each year, we need to take care of our trash and avoid leaving our poop buried in shallow pits. It is important to stick to trails when moving around and avoid putting soap, food or human waste in streams and lakes.

Whenever you go out camping, caving or night walking in the great outdoors, chances are you’ll have a headlamp with you.You don’t want to walk into the dunny hole, stroll off a cliff (I’ve done it), or get attacked by “drop bears”! However, have you got the right light for the activity you’re doing? What sort of light is right at night?
Headlamps can be a very confusing product, with lots of different application, ratings, and functions. Having the right one can make life a whole lot easier at night. This article will assess the suitability of headlamps for different activities, explain what the various numbers on a headlamp mean, and suggest some features to look for when buying a new headlamp.
Where you use it
Generally, head torches/headlamps are used for travelling at night, seeing around a campsite, or caving.
Headlamp for travelling at night
For travelling at night, it is important to look for a headlamp with a variety of features. You don’t just want a torch with a hugely powerful spotlight.
A powerful spotlight will give the illumination necessary for seeing things around you, whether this is controls, trail markers or animals, but may interfere with your night vision.
You will need a lower power setting for reading maps, or when you get close to any reflective surfaces. It is also useful to have a wider angle flood setting, so you can see the area around you, not just a small area ahead. Generally look for something with a variety of focuses, and power levels, or separate power settings.
A headlamp for use around the campsite
For use around campsites, a basic headlamp is all that is required. A powerful spotlight is generally overkill, as it will just reflect off something and blind you, or accidentally end up being shone in someone else’s eyes.
Multiple power settings can still be useful as you may want more light for detailed work, such as lighting a fire, or fixing a car, but won’t need all this light to read a book, or drinking a coffee.
Look for something with multiple power levels, remembering it doesn’t need to be hugely powerful or have multiple focuses.
Choosing a headlamp for caving
Caving is similar to travelling at night, however a long battery life, and durability is even more important.
Although there is no natural light at all when you are deep in a cave, it is still useful to have a lower power setting for when you are around other people or doing detailed work yourself.
A powerful spotlight is great for looking around large cavities, and a wide-angle flood light is vital for seeing where you are putting your feet, hands and head. Generally look for a torch with a powerful spot and flood light that has a long battery life.
There are different features to consider for night use. 
What do all these numbers mean?
Headlamps are very technical pieces of equipment, with a variety of specifications, such as brightness, range and battery life.
Brightness
Brightness is generally measured in either lumen (metric) or candela (imperial). One Candela is the light output of an average candle and is equivalent to 12.57 lumen.
Headlamps generally vary in brightness from between about 12 lumens, to 200 lumens, with some specialist models outputting over 500 lumens (but you pay for it).
Naturally the brighter the light, the better you can see around you at night, but don’t make the mistake of just buying the brightest lamp you can find if you don’t need it.
Firstly you will spend a heck of a lot of money, and secondly, chances are it will be so bright it will reflect back into your own eyes, meaning at close range you won’t be able to see anything anyway.
The range of the headlamp
The range of a headlamp relates to both the brightness and the lens quality.The brighter the light, the further it will penetrate, and the more you will be able to see at that distance.
The lens stops the light from spreading out, a LED will radiate light off equally in all directions, and the lens focuses this light into a narrow beam. The better it is focused, the further it will travel before dissipating.
Be careful because the range the manufacturer’s quotes is often ambitious, and could only be achieved using very good batteries, at full power in total darkness, and even then the detail at that distance may not be all that good.
I’ve generally found that you have good lighting to about half the range the manufacturer recommends, but this varies over the battery life.
Battery life of headlamps
Naturally the longer the battery life, the less often you need to replace the batteries. The problem is that LED lights continue to get progressively dimmer from the moment they are turned on. The battery life, quoted on a headlamp, is the headlamps life until it reaches about 1 lumen of brightness.
The useable battery life is often significantly less that the advertised life. There is a feature called constant current which will be discussed below, which helps improve the useable battery life, but the best solution isto always have spare batteries.
Why do I want all these features?
Headlamps come with a variety of features including different powered lights, different coloured lights, different lighting modes, and features to improve the battery life.
Most mid to high-end headlamps come with either a power adjustable main light or secondary light sources of lower power. These lower settings cannot only be invaluable for seeing things that are close to you, but they also use far less battery power than the primary light.
These settings are a better alternative for just being seen, or when you don’t require great detail at a distance.
Coloured Lights
Many headlamps have different coloured lights, each with a specific purpose. The most common is a red light.
Red lights are used for low powered lighting, which won’t destroy your night vision.This makes it great for using when you don’t want to wake up someone you are sharing a tent with. Or if need a little bit of light to do detailed work such tying your shoelace, but don’t want to lose your night vision.
Green lights are wonderful for reading maps, they highlight contours far beyond normal vision and improve the visibility of detail. Greenlight also has less effect on your night vision than white light.
Blue and ultraviolet lights are used for tracking and highlight blood. Blue lights specifically can make maps easier to read, and are the only lights that will cut through the fog.
Coloured lights are very useful for different purposes, especially when the lights are being used in high-performance applications.
Lighting Modes
Some headlamps have a series of lighting modes, such as flashing, flood or spot. Flashing lights are useful for being seen, such as when running or riding at night, but don’t provide good vision for the user.
Flood or wide angle lighting is good for seeing your immediate surroundings. This is good for camping or walking at night, where seeing the area around you in detail is more important than seeing objects at a distance.
Spotlights are primarily useful for seeing objects at a distance when riding or walking. They can also provide a lot of light over a small area at close range.
A variety of different functions, especially flood and spot functions, can vastly improve the versatility of a headlamp.
Lighting modes improve the versatility of the unit. 
Constant Current
A nifty feature called constant current can improve the performance of LED lights significantly.
This feature maintains a constant current throughout the battery life. This means the light will remain at a constant brightness for the entire battery life. The current then drops off quickly when the battery is about to die.
The only disadvantage is that you don’t know how much power is left in your batteries. So they can run out very quickly, at very inconvenient times so always carry spare batteries.

As darkness and light rain both fell on a partner and I for the last couple of miles of a 27-mile dayhike the length of western Maine’s brutally rugged Mahoosuc Range, I slipped the Storm onto my head—which helped prevent my shuffling and occasional staggering from turning into falling. I also used this ultralight headlamp in campsites from Idaho’s City of Rocks National Reserve and Yosemite National Park to backpacking the Grand Canyon’s Thunder River-Deer Creek Loop. Through all that field testing, the Storm proved itself one of the best high-performance headlamps on the market today. Here’s why.
Few backcountry headlamps have the Storm’s range of features and power, and perhaps none do at its price. For starters, it sports 350 lumens of power in its two LED bulbs—a very bright spotlight and an excellent LED proximity beam for illuminating a campsite, tent interior, or a map or book page. That’s brighter than most headlamps in this weight class. Night vision mode offers three colors: the most common, red, plus green (useful for hunters because it doesn’t disturb game animals), and blue (which cuts through fog). The Storm is rated IP67, meaning it’s both dustproof and waterproof to one meter for up to 30 minutes.

As with other BD headlamps, the Storm has a couple of features I use frequently: Power Tap technology, which allows you to switch instantly between a dimmed level (that you set) and full brightness simply by tapping the side of the casing; and Brightness Memory, which lets you power the light on and off at a chosen brightness level without having to go to full power (draining batteries).
While the instructions can appear complicated at first glance, using the Storm is fairly intuitive; and anyone who’s owned a BD headlamp of recent vintage will find it familiar. Depress the power button once for on-off, twice to change modes—for instance, from spotlight to proximity beam in white, or from red to green to blue when in a night mode. Press it three times to enter strobe for whichever mode it’s in. In any mode, hold it down when turned on to dim and brighten. Hold two seconds to change between white and red LED modes, and double-click in red mode to switch to green and blue; all three colors have a strobe option.

Like other BD lamps, the Storm locks off by depressing the power button for four seconds (a blue light will blink rapidly for three seconds when it’s locked off)—a very useful feature to prevent accidentally draining your batteries inside your pack.
Operating on four AAA batteries, it has a longer battery life than many ultralight competitors: BD puts it at 40 hours of battery life at high power, and says that’s based on testing battery life down to the threshold of what is considered “usable” light, for which the industry standard (also used by other companies) is 0.25 lux at two meters. At low power, battery life is up to 120 hours, according to BD.
But that leads to a minor drawback of the Storm: Four batteries make it slightly heavier than the lightest headlamps, and it feels a little bulkier on your head. Although it never bobbed, even when hiking fast, runners may find it a little large. A lever lock provides easy access to the battery compartment without requiring a tool. Any rechargeable batteries can be used in the Storm.

  Whether you’re hiking or descending from a climb after dark, route-finding, starting a dawn-patrol ski run long before sunup, firing up a stove, or just kicking around the campsite at night, the Storm is one of the two or three most versatile, high-performance ultralight headlamps on the market.
At just $10 more than the popular Black Diamond Spot, the Storm has more features and brightness, along with slightly more weight. Some users may not need that enhanced performance. But hard-core wilderness backpackers, climbers, hunters, and ultra-hikers will appreciate the brightness boost, watertight housing, and rangy feature set that can handle any adventure—at a competitive price.
