As early as 1937 there are reports of German initiatives to collect human hair for use in carpets and felt and for tar-papering roofs. In a press release issued shortly before a convention of hairdressers in Breslau (today Wrocław, in Poland) it was stated, ‘It is hoped that a well-organised collection by hairdressers will yield from 400,000 to 1,000,000 lb of hair annually.’ One year later a report in the New York Times stated, ‘Human hair, especially women’s, has proved very satisfactory for rugs and that branch of the Nationalist Socialist party devoted to the collection of junk is now collecting it also. Approximately 8 cents per pound is paid for it. Barber shops will be combed by party scrap squads to collect it.’

By 1942, when Europe was in the grip of war, human-hair cloth was also being produced in Hungary, Finland and occupied France. With import bans on wool from Australia, cotton from the US and silk from the Far East, natural fibres were in short supply and in Germany itself all wool was reserved for use by the military. This meant that civilian needs depended increasingly on new types of fibre such as ‘fibrane’, produced from wood pulp, and ‘piloita’, manufactured out of hair. ‘All types of human hair go into the composition of the cloth, which is pressed under steam and comes out uniformly gray,’ reads an article in the New York Times in February 1942.

Interestingly there are also reports of experiments at the chemical institute of Hamburg University to extract ‘cystin’ from hair and to mix it with food for the treatment of patients suffering from malnutrition.

The later manufacture of L-cysteine on an industrial scale for food and pharmaceuticals no doubt owes its origins to experiments of this sort.

We decided last night, after looking at the weather App, that today we wouldn’t do our planned walk. Lots of heavy rain and winds up to 40kph.

We had to check out of the AirBnB at 10am so planned on breakfast at the only cafe in Cape Bridgewater. It’s right on the beach which would’ve been part of today’s walk! As you can see from the video below, it’s not a beach walking kinda day!

After breakfast we drove to the lighthouse at Portland but first stopped at a small lookout about 200m off the road and up a small climb. No visibility at all!

There was a short loop walk around the lighthouse that we planned to do but it lead to another loop walk which we didn’t plan to do but did! So we ended up walking approximately 8kms on our non-walking day. 🤣

The Portland lighthouse is the 8th highest in Australia (there are about 350 lighthouses in Australia).

We had a (terrible) coffee in their cafe and Phil had a hot chocolate which he thought Ian G would’ve awarded 4/10.

We then drove into Portland and checked into our AirBnB for the next 3 nights. It’s very nice.

A lazy afternoon reading, emails, washing etc. Soon enough it was time for a glass of wine plus crackers/cheese before walking to our dinner booking. We also decided tonight was a dinner out evening and then cooking at home for the next two nights eating through our supplies.

I don’t think Portland is known for its culinary experiences and the restaurant proved us correct but it was a fun night with Melting Moments for dessert!

A short walk home.

Tomorrow’s walk starts at the lighthouse and then we walk along the coast back to our accommodation. We think it’ll be approximately 18kms. We are being picked up at 8:30am.

Hopefully we will then have time to walk around Portland as it is well known for its civic architecture.

And apparently in 1991 there was a gruesome double murder in a hairdressing salon in the middle of town. The husband of one of the murdered women was charged but he died as the case was being reopened.

Western Australia New Visa Updates For Overseas Workers!

Applicants interested in the Western Australia (WA) skilled immigration visas have a lot to look forward to: the WA government headed by Premier Mark McGowan recently announced that it will cut red tape in an attempt to fix WA’s skilled job crisis. 

As WA’s unemployment rate dropped to an all-time low this August, many industries faced and publicly decried the lack of workers to meet an uptick in demand. Popular restaurants, short on servers, chefs and managers, even had to turn away hundreds of customers. In response to the increased demand outpacing the supply of labour, the McGowan government announced a slew of measures to attract more skilled workers and support local industries. 

In an update to Western Australian skilled migration news, over 100 occupations have been added to the WA skilled occupation list, bringing the total to more than 300, increasing the list by nearly 60% compared to the previous year. This list includes occupations for workers in the healthcare, construction, manufacturing, and tourism industries. It even includes hairdressers, driving instructors, panel beaters and butchers. 

Minimum visa requirements for foreign workers are set by the Federal Government of Australia which oversees the list of eligible occupations. Thereafter, states, such as WA select jobs on that list to include in their own State Nominated Migration Program, which provides applicants with bonuses in the points-based system used by the Department of Home Affairs to approve visas.

WA received 8,140 places for 2022–23, 4,950 more places than the previous year and the third largest allocation overall, after New South Wales and Victoria.

The McGowan government also complimented the substantial increase in the occupation list with changes to the State nomination criteria by providing temporary relaxations such as:

Waiving the $200 application fee

Reducing the requirement to have an employment contract from 12 months to six months

Easing the requirements for applicants to demonstrate “sufficient funds” by doing away with the need to show $20,000 in their bank accounts 

Removing additional English requirements for professional and manager occupations

Reducing work experience requirements for the 2022-23 program year to attract more skilled workers to WA

The WA government also announced it aims to allocate nearly $4 million on short-term programs which will help foreign students in developing hospitality and tourism skills. These measures further support the McGowan policies to attract skilled migrants such as its decision in July to launch the new Skilled Migrant Employment Register which connects skilled migrants to state jobs.
