Edificio medieval completamente reconstruido, el Antiguo Ayuntamiento cierra Marienplatz por el este. A menudo es confundido con el Nuevo Ayuntamiento, dado su aspecto impecable. Tras haber sido testimonio de importantes episodios históricos, hoy en día acoge el Museo del Juguete. El Altes Rathaus es el segundo ayuntamiento en la historia de Múnich. Fue construído por Jörg von Halsbach (llamado Ganghofer) en 1474 sobre los espacios de un antiguo edificio. La estructura del Altes Rathaus (Viejo ayuntamiento) se compone de un gran salón gótico que utiliza una antigua puerta de la ciudad, y la torre, como su entrada principal. Ha sido modificado en varias oportunidades, fue destruido a causa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, por ahí pasaban los tanques del tercer Reich y el actual edificio fue reconstruido. Cuenta la leyenda, que cuando al arquitecto Jörg Von Halsbach, le encargaron la construcción de la catedral de Munich, éste hizo un pacto con el diablo. Le propuso, que si no interfería en la construcción de la catedral, él construiría una catedral sin ventanas, y si no lo conseguía el diablo se quedaría con su alma. El diablo aceptó la apuesta y no obstaculizó la construcción, que duró solo 20 años, muy poco tiempo para la época (de 1468 a 1488). Cuando la catedral de Munich estuvo terminada, el diablo se asomó a la entrada y comprobó, que desde allí, no se veía ninguna ventana (el ventanal del fondo estaba tapado por un gran retablo) y encolerizado porque no había conseguido el alma del arquitecto, dejó la marca de su huella, la huella del diablo en la catedral de Munich. It is a landmark and is considered a symbol of the Bavarian capital city. Although called "Münchner Dom" (Munich Cathedral) on its website and URL, the church is referred to as "Frauenkirche" by locals. The cathedral was erected in only 20 years' time by Jörg von Halsbach. Because there was not a nearby stone pit and for other financial reasons, brick was chosen as building material. Construction began in 1468, and when the cash resources were exhausted in 1479, Pope Sixtus IV granted an indulgence.The two towers, which are both just over 98 meters (323 feet), were completed in 1488, and the church was consecrated in 1494. There were plans for tall, open-work spires typical of the Gothic style, but given the financial difficulties of the time, the plans could not be realized. Bridge to Altes Rathaus from Viktualienmarkt by Tony Via Flickr: The building, documented for the first time in 1310, had its Grand Hall (Großer Saal) constructed in 1392/1394. The former Talburg Gate (Talburgtor) of the first city wall serves as spire. The Old Town Hall was re-designed in late-gothic style by Jörg von Halsbach 1470-1480. The Grand Hall was decorated by the Morris dancers, created by Erasmus Grasser. After alterations of the facade during the Renaissance and again in the Baroque the building was restored in neo-gothic style 1861-1864. In 1874 the municipality moved to the New Town Hall. For the passage of increased road traffic the Old Town Hall was tunneled in 1877 with a drive-through and a separate pedestrian's passage, as well as once again in 1934/35, this time finally destroying the original ground floor. During World War II the building was severely damaged and the spire was reconstructed in 1971-1974. Parts of the neo-Gothic elements, especially the statues of Ludwig the Bavarian (west facade) and Henry the Lion (east facade) and the gable design are preserved.
