Over the course of five decades, American photographer, filmmaker, and publisher Jim French elevated male erotica to a place of honour within the pantheon of art – creating COLT Studio, the most successful male physique photography company in the US.

Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, French moved to Harrisburg at the age of nine and spent the rest of his childhood there. His parents were both musicians: his mother sang and his father played the violin. French himself was drawn to art and went to study at the Philadelphia School of Art before enlisting in the army and going on active duty 1955. Two years later, he was honourably discharged and moved to New York, where he began working as a fashion illustrator.

JINJER Announces Fall 2024 North American Tour With HANABIE And BORN OF OSIRIS

Ukrainian modern metallers JINJER will embark on a North American tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from fast-rising Japanese metalcore unit HANABIE and progressive metalcore mainstays BORN OF OSIRIS.

As JINJER is currently in the studio recording its fifth studio album, fans can expect to hear a handful of brand new, never-before-heard tracks on the tour.

The 18-date tour will kick off on September 20 at in Sayreville, New Jersey and will include a couple of Canadian shows (in Toronto and Montreal) before wrapping up on October 13 at Sacramento, California's Aftershock festival.

In addition to Aftershock, the tour will also see JINJER performing at festivals such as Metal Injection Festival, Louder Than Life and the return of the mighty Mayhem festival.

Various ticket presales via Citi, Ticketmaster, Live Nation and more begin today, with general public on-sale beginning this Friday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

JINJER comments on returning to North America: "It's finally time for some huge announcements: We're stoked to report that this September, JINJER will return to North America with not only two absolutely sick supports: HANABIE and BORN OF OSIRIS! Most importantly, we'll be performing some brand new unreleased songs from our upcoming fifth studio album. [We] just cannot wait to share what we've been working on for the last two years. During an appearance on a recent episode of Knotfest's "She's With The Band", the show hosted by Tori Kravitz, JINJER vocalist Tatiana Shmailyuk spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to the band's 2021 album "Wallflowers". Tatiana said: "My purpose is just to write lyrics and sing them. I'm so behind right now with the writing lyrics. And I warned my guys. We were at least to get a really rough draft, rough sketch or a demo of one song, like maybe first single from the new album, at least get this, but nope. [Stress and creativity don't] work with me. Well, but when the deadline's coming, and everybody knows that — I've been talking, like, every single time we release a new album, I say that, I say this — deadlines push me. So I just have to write, so I get this stream of consciousness, basically. I write down whatever the bullshit is in my head. And then you build it. At least you have to have bricks to build a poem or whatever it is, just lyrics."

Regarding the musical direction of the new JINJER material, Tatiana said: "It's gonna be different, first of all, because I feel that the music differs a lot. And to my mind, the whole — I won't say how many songs are there; I guess 12 or even 15; let's say 13; I don't remember — but they all have… not all of them, but half of them, at least, they have a similarity in them. They're similar to each other or they remind me. They have this concept within — without any lyrics, they still sound like they belong to one box. They are a set of songs. And I already think about all the… I'm not even thinking about like the lyrics — I think about the topics and stuff, but I think about the booklet or the cover or even the music videos and what I'm gonna wear there. And it has a certain flavor to me that… I feel like it has this flavor of 19th century. It's very romanticism from the 19th century. If you listen to it, you will think, 'Oh.' You know, when you listen to MUSE, you feel he was inspired by a lot of classical composers — obviously. So our new music has this flavor. And I'm so excited."

JINJER released its first official live DVD/Blu-ray, "Live In Los Angeles", on May 17 via Napalm Records. Recorded and filmed on December 22, 2022 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, this offering is intended to celebrate not only getting through the last few years in one piece, but also the band's 15-year career.

"Live In Los Angeles" was a spontaneous decision by the band, recorded as raw as possible, to emphasize the passion that can come from a live show. This release is an explosive mixture of JINJER's discography — featuring fan favorites like "Sit Stay Roll Over", "Home Back" and the game-changing "Pisces". The live album contains 16 songs in various audio formats, with some strictly limited: the deluxe digipack features not only a DVD, but also two more songs, "Wallflower" and "Disclosure!", recorded in Paris in 2023.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO AL JARDINE: The Wayback Machine lands on Summer 1981: I was flying from San Francisco to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to visit family and friends. While changing planes in Pittsburgh, imagine my surprise to see The Beach Boys entourage (minus Carl Wilson, who wasn’t on that tour) waiting at the gate, headed to Harrisburg for a run-off gig. I conversed with Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Dennis Wilson. During the flight, they let me pick their brains about songs, studio craft, songwriting, etc.—my opener was to talk about “Celebrate the News.” Al was very interested in the landscape as we looked out the windows. It occurred to me to compare Appalachia to Big Sur but my mind drifted… 

Years later, back in California, I was demo’ing on the keyboard, thinking I was homesick for my native PA. Out of nowhere the line “I Wanna Be-in Pennsylvania” flew into my head, modeled after tribute songs to American places made by The Beach Boys. The final take was expertly mixed by Rusty Richards (Julie Miller, Brian Wilson) and features guest vocals by Mike Roe (The 77s). Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Al, and thank you for your years of bringing musical joy to the world.

Yes, we're back at it after a long summer break, it's September 4 and it's bleeding hot in the Quindo studio, so nothing has changed. Pictured below is the UK postpunk band The Psychedelic Furs at around 1980, a lineup that wouldn't last long but that was responsible for the self-titled debut album that was released in 1980. The band was brought to my attention again by the Dynamite Hemorrhage radio show. Host Jay Hinman mentioned some reviews that he had read about the debut album being characterized as the ultimate mix of Roxy Music and The Velvet Underground. For me it was also the first time I heard these two bands mentioned when talking about The Psychedelic Furs, but it kinda makes sense. Anyway, the debut album is really really a great record, sexy and groovy and made to dance to. So I played the track "We Love You" from the Furs. There's more old music in this episode from The Prunes, The Vultures, The Peechees, Armitage Shanks, Blod. But moreover, the summer spawned some really great releases, I don't think I have ever bought so many records in the summer months as I did now in 2023, and most of them being new releases. The new Famous Mammals lp is a masterpiece, there's new bands such as Children Maybe Later, The Sheaves and Burnt Envelope, and new releases from bands such as the synth goths from Es and droners Pefkin. Production by the girl employees, both in the office and the bakery departments of Meyer Baking Co., stopped dead-still yesterday when a distinguished visitor appeared at the plant to order a birthday cake. 

The visitor was Clark Gable, the moving picture star.

Gable, who is on location at Lake Arrowhead, explained he needed an elaborately decorated birthday cake for – well, he didn’t say who. The bakers assured him the cake would be ready, and Gable, interested in the operation of the bakery, inspected the big plant, talking with the employees. 

The girl employees got a break when Gable appeared particularly interested in their work and devoted much of his time to chatting with them, even discussing his motion picture work. Later, he posed for photographs with the girls and other employees, who rushed for cameras when he graciously consented to be filmed. 

Gable slyly admitted the birthday cake would be served at a party at Lake Arrowhead, but even the gossip columnists didn’t know who the lady guest of honor will be. But Carole Lombard, too, is at the lake, where her new picture, “True Confessions,” is being shot.

The great Gable provided an additional thrill for studio audiences around NBC Sunday. Scheduled for an appearance on the Charlie McCarthy program he showed up early with Carole Lombard and Don Ameche and sneaked into the 4 p.m. broadcast of the Jack Benny show. 

Sitting in the first row, Gable was a magnet for all feminine eyes – and droves of autograph seekers. Two uniformed page boys were finally assigned to relieve him of the latter. He laughed heartily at the show and was somewhat flustered by the gag struck in at the last minute in his honor – the “Clerk Gable” one in the grocery store skit.

Carole Lombard sat in the control room and stared attentively at her hero (Gable) when he faced Casanova McCarthy. The dialog duel between the Hollywood He-man and the Incorrigible Image rocked the audience – particularly when Clark asked Charlie for the secret of his success with the opposite sex and Charlie replied: “Would Garbo tell Dietrich?” 

Hollywood is alive with radio studio goers on Sunday afternoon. They come from all parts of the state – from all parts of the country, for that matter. They stand for hours around the studio gates, hoping for a glimpse of the stars who pass by in shiny limousines.

ADMIRERS TRAIL GABLE AND CAROLE DURING DATE

Police informed a red-faced Clark Gable today that he and Carole Lombard are popular with the movie fans.

Gable called for Miss Lombard at the actress’ home and noticed an automobile parked nearby with two young men in it. He drove down Hollywood boulevard with Miss Lombard and the other car followed. He tried a few twists and turns but the car stayed on to his trail.

Gable jotted down the other car’s license number and gave it to police.

Police traced the number to Clifton Bryant, 25, and Alfred Dilly, who admired Gable and Miss Lombard on the screen and wanted a good look at them in real life.

Pair Pursuing Screen Stars Prove to Be Merely Curious

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard co-starred yesterday in a real-life drama involving pursuit by a strange automobile and police investigation.

The suspected “villains” were Clifton Bryant, 25 years of age of 108 East California Street, Glendale, and his friend Alfred Dilly of Pasadena.

Bryant and Dilly parked outside Miss Lombard’s home. Gable arrived, escorted Miss Lombard from her house and drove away. Bryant and Dilly followed down Hollywood Boulevard. 

Gable, worried, took the license number of the other car when the youths twice drove beside and stared. 

Glendale police traced the license plate to Bryant, but chuckled when they learned he and Dilly were merely curious fans of the film stars.

Bandit or Movie Bug?

Sometimes from the way people act you cannot tell whether they are kidnappers or hero-worshipping fanatics. A couple of youths who are doubtless “that way” about Carole Lombard parked a car near her home and when Clark Gable called for Miss Lombard in his car they trailed the couple along the streets for several blocks, at times drawing up to their car and staring at them. Had Gable been excitable he might have taken a shot at the youths, and any jury would have excused him. In this day of automobile crimes, it is not safe to act like a yegg if you are not one. This hero worship is growing to such an absurd extent that people are breaking into the homes of the movie stars to find some trifling relic they can take. Day by day in every way we are getting sillier and sillier.

Chatter in Hollywood: Clark Gable has rented himself a little house in the valley not far from the ranch homes of Al Jolson, Hal Willis, Barbara Stanwyck and the Zeppo Marxes. He will have a riding horse, raise a few crops, and go in for gentleman farming in a small but effective way. The house Clark has rented is furnished, but when Carole Lombard gets through redecorating it in her own inimitable style you won’t know it. That gal has a real flair for doing houses.

Ranch Land Bought

Clark Gable has forty acres of ranch land in the same vicinity (as Bob Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck). When Carole Lombard purchased the adjoining forty acres Hollywood buzzed. The rumor is that Clark and Carole will wed this spring, and make the ranch their honeymoon home. However, the public is forgetting that Mr. Gable is technically already wed. At a recent party, Mrs. Gable sighed over her tea cup and said to another guest: “Strange how everyone in Hollywood is always wanting a divorce. My husband doesn’t want one.”

A sextet who go completely Western over the weekend is composed of Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Bob Taylor, Gail Patrick, and Bob Cobb.

Cowboys from neighboring ranches bite the dust in dismay as they give a quick look at the Lombard boots, buckskin britches, rainbow skirt, sombrero, fancy bandana, and Mexican saddle. Her spirited Western pony with an Arabian strain causes heart burnings on practically every ranch from San Gabriel to San Ysidro. 

Gable has bought a 25-acre ranch in the San Fernando Valley, and not far away Miss Lombard has got herself a neat 35-acre outfit on which she can run as wild as any jack rabbit. 

More often than not, the sextet get together on the Marwyck ranch, where Barbara Stanwyck’s handsome stone house is built on a hill.

Carole is, as always, the life of the party. Last Sunday, when she announced her intention of milking a cow, Gable bet her a pair of silk stockings against a carton of cigarettes she couldn’t do it. 

Exerting all her charm, Miss Lombard approached Bossy, who apparently had no faith in moving picture stars as milkers. She pushed the lovely Carole into a tailspin. This was a mistake on her part, for, with the aid of four stanchions to which she attached Miss Moo’s four legs, Miss Lombard proceeded to milk in peace and demand payment of the bet. 

Newest development is Gable’s attempt to start a cattle ranch with some of Joel McCrea’s prize-winning stock as a beginning.

Clark Gable, who has three interests in life – Carole Lombard, acting and guns – has just received a prized addition to his private arsenal’s museum. It’s a bullet fired during the Civil War, sent to him by a fan, Leslie M. Page, of Wilmington, NC. 

“I have always been an admirer of yours, and knowing that you collect firearms, I trust you might like to have this very rare bullet, a relic from bombardment of Fort Fisher,” Page wrote.

Fred Perry and Ellsworth Vines have the spotlight on them and don’t have it all at the same time. That’s not a tough one to figure out. Here’s the answer – Clark Gable and Carole Lombard catch the spectators’ eyes while they watch the two tennis stars dash in a dither around the court.

The other evening at the tennis matches Carole Lombard sallied in with Clark Gable while everyone blinked and looked again at the cartwheel proportions of the brim on Carole’s shining brown straw hat. It dipped just a bit in front, but was unadorned except for a band since it topped off a tailored spectator’s costume. Her suit of brown wool was made with a semi-fitted three-quarters length coat and her slim skirt must have been close to fourteen inches from the floor.

Clark “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” Gable, film star, brought this snarling cougar kitten back from a 10-day hunting trip in Kaibab forest in northern Arizona. He said his chief ideas was to get photographs and not to kill, and that the kitten was captured after films were made of its mother. The animal is now a member of the studio zoo.

Clark Gable, leading a 60-pound cougar cub around the film lot on a leash Thursday, offered a strip of movie film and the testimony of eye-witness Dr. Franklyn Thorpe, Mary Astor’s former husband, to support “bring ’em back alive” story of the the wild Kaibab forest in Arizona.

The screen star, ardent huntsman, related: “We found a huge female cat with two kittens on Saddle mountain. I got within 15 feet of her and filmed some swell shots. We tried to rope her but she picked up one kitten and ran. Our dogs treed the other cub and roped it. “Our cub broke its chain that night and got loose. Next day we followed the mother’s tracks and lassoed the other kitten – and here it is.” 

Offered the cub as a house cat, Carole Lombard refused with thanks. 

March 9, 1937 – Salt Lake Telegram

Clark Gable’s career as a “bring ’em back alive” hunter suffered a rude setback today. Finding out that the baby mountain lion captured by the star wields a wicked claw and is a lot tougher than was at first supposed, the MGM studio has given Gable 10 days to get rid of it. Pending a permanent disposal, they have impounded the animal in a cage on the lot. 

What alarmed movie executives most was the news that Gable had brought the lion back to Hollywood in the rumble seat of his car and that he carried it to Carole Lombard’s house and to other places in the same manner. Now they have instructed him not to even go near it. So if anyone wants a baby mountain lion that was captured by Clark Gable, just apply to the MGM studio.

If psychologists ever decided to select a Utopian center for the well-balanced mind, Hollywood would never be seriously considered in the voting. To all appearances Hollywood is crazy, as most of the world will agree, but a thorough look behind the cogs of it, its gigantic exploitation machine might disclose that it is only crazy like the fox. 

Almost every move Hollywood makes is carefully planned in advance.  Occasionally someone will go out on a shooting tangent, others will forget starving relatives and still others will keep diaries, but those remote occurrences are never countenanced by the publicity machine. This machine attempts to censor as it operates, but it thrives on eccentricities. … 

But the latest bit of idiosyncrasy to be fed into the machine is more difficult than most to fit into classification. It concerns the growing tendency on the part of name players, particularly the feminine stars, to lend their boy friends to rivals. … 

Only recently Barbara Stanwyck, whose romance with Robert Taylor has been aired in the public prints for more than a year, consented to Bob’s accompanying Jean Harlow to the President’s Ball at Washington. Of course, that was a studio order for a publicity coup, and Barbara got Bob back…. 

About the only going-together stars in Hollywood who haven’t consented to one of these temporary trading propositions are Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. In the first place, both are important enough to draw plenty of publicity without resorting to that sort of thing; secondly, they seem too fond of each other’s company to chance even a brief change of companionship.

Romantic couples in real life are being given their chances as companions in reel life, a survey shows. It has been discovered, film producers say, that motion picture audiences are anxious to watch screen performances of a couple who are known to be in love off the screen as well as on.
