My wife’s nurse manager said that it was important that they stop talking about “maximum staffing ratios” because it’s “unrealistic” to assume that hospitals can provide safe staffing ratios. The same nurse manager said that the nursing unit was “unproductive.”
This is a barefaced lie. Hospitals can easily provide good ratios and good work environments if they choose to do it.
Furthermore — is nursing supposed to be “productive?” It’s a human service, not an assembly line. The real irony here is that a nurse manager, the proximal end of a line of completely unproductive middle managers, seems to think that the problem is bedside nurses, not the ecosystem of useless sycophants that defines the chain of command in the average American hospital.
American Healthcare is unbelievably broken.

Not to detract from the patient-oriented post above, I think I know what’s putting a strain on the American medical system.
Wasteful healthcare administration.
“Research indicates that the US spends more on health care administration than comparable nations. One estimate from the Peterson Foundation, based on 2021 data from the OECD, finds that the US spends $1,055 per capita on administrative costs—by far the highest amount on a list of twelve OECD nations plus the US. The country with the next highest level of per capita administrative spending is Germany, at $306 per capita.”
“…if administrative spending is about 15–30 percent of national health spending, then wasteful administrative spending comprises half of that, or 7.5–15 percent of national health spending (or $285–$570 billion in 2019).
Check out this eye-opening report in Health Affairs.
people with medical issues are not “putting a strain on the medical system”. that’s what the medical system is for. yes this includes people with substance use related medical issues and other people considered “undeserving” of help

Tumblr media
The healthcare field is a vast and dynamic landscape. Within it exists a fascinating intersection where direct patient care meets the intricacies of running a well-oiled medical machine. This is the realm of paramedical and health administration.
For those with a passion for medicine but also a keen interest in organization and leadership, this path offers a unique blend of skills. On one hand, you gain the knowledge and training to work alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. This could involve tasks like assisting in surgery, performing diagnostic tests, or administering medications.
On the other hand, you delve into the administrative side of healthcare. You learn about budgeting, staffing, regulations, and the day-to-day operations that keep a hospital, clinic, or lab functioning smoothly.
Why Consider This Path?
There are several reasons why a career in paramedical and health administration might be the perfect fit for you:
Variety: You won't be confined to just one role. You can leverage your clinical background to understand the needs of patients and staff alike, making you a valuable asset in various administrative tasks.
Demand: The healthcare industry is constantly growing, and with it comes the need for skilled administrators who understand the specific nuances of this field.
Making a Difference: By ensuring healthcare facilities run efficiently, you contribute directly to the quality of care patients receive.
What to Expect
This career path typically involves a bachelor's degree in paramedical sciences or health administration. Some programs even offer a combined degree that incorporates both areas of study.
Beyond the Degree
Your education is just the beginning. The healthcare field thrives on continuous learning. Staying updated on the latest medical advancements, regulations, and best practices in healthcare management is crucial.
Finding Your Niche
The beauty of this field lies in its versatility. You can find opportunities in hospitals, clinics, emergency medical services, public health departments, and more. Enjoy working with children? Look into a role at a pediatric facility. Have a knack for technology? Explore health informatics or medical coding.
A Rewarding Journey
A career in paramedical and health administration offers a unique opportunity to combine your passion for patient care with your organizational skills. It's a chance to make a real difference in the healthcare system, ensuring it runs smoothly and efficiently for both patients and medical professionals.
