Rāhina (10.1) Mark Bradford
USA - LA
Big textured colourful artworks
They look like they’re breaking down and peeling.
Colours are bright
“Painting”
Exhibited at the Venice Biennale
Big scale
His process: taking the social fabric of life into the studio - the stories of his environment - pushes it back out into the world (for both the ‘art world’ and the people of his community)
Intersectionality - black, gay, working class, matriarchal commnunity (that kept him safe), black politic
“complicated, messy and slow”
Described his work as about the body in crisis - AIDS epidemic (1980s)
Plays between painting and installation
Scale of work talks to context - “bigger than yourself”
Monumental/anti-monumental
Ref. Malcolm-X
Works that re-vealed the fabric of the gallery - mining of the space - all the previous works painted onto the wall - exposing what is underneath.
Performs metaphors - eg. peeling and uncovering.
“No good ideas come in by the front door”
Works according to necessity - made works with what he had - this ends up revealing his environment.
“Gave himself permission” - to have his own voice and to be uncompromising.
‘Art’ versus everyday creativity … done in the evening after work… or in non-Art jobs like hair styling.
Billboards - the large format print - used ropes to create multiple horizons - sometimes subtractive also additive.- that work reminds me of monets waterlillies the one where they are on the curved walls and surround the views from all angels
Beautiful works
Ugly works too.
References to Modernism (abstract expressionism perhaps?)
using posters and billboards to illustrate the pollical and social landscape- what is advertised is what society what society wants at the time.
What is he celebrating?
Himself
Minority culture/society
Giving voice and agency to marginal groups
Can’t represent whole groups of people - but he could express who he was and his understanding of those groups.
Expressiveness
His freedom - recognising those that helped change society
He celebrates the present and the possibility of the future - America is not what it was, and it won’t be that again.

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: REWIND REVIEW: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Tumblr media
(Image: hollywoodreporter.com)
For an occasional new segment, Every Movie Has a Lesson will cover upcoming home media releases combining an “overdue” or “rewind” film review, complete with life lessons, and an unboxed look at special features.
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
Big as a billboard in some places and as small as a mobile ad in others, the marketing imagery of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker touts the tagline “The Saga Will End.” There’s something to be said for finality, especially with a 42-year-old franchise as venerated and cherished as this one. The virtues of remembrance, culmination, gratification, and other such lofty notions loom so much larger when an entity is billed to be the last of something important. The movie in disc form hits store shelves everywhere today.
LESSON #1: THE DEFINITION OF “FINALITY” — Diving deeper beyond the basic “something that is final” meaning, the dictionary of this galaxy describes “finality” as “conclusiveness,” “decisiveness,” or “an ultimate act, utterance, or belief.” J.J. Abrams’ massive space opera follows his own The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi to aim so very badly for those traits. In many peaks of scope and emotion, his movie achieves such finality. In others, overindulgence and disarray put question marks on the value or vindication of all this promised fulfillment.
Going back to the tagline, the key word out of that poster’s sentence becomes “will.” As grand of a finale as The Rise of Skywalker builds itself to be, the likelihood of its stewarding studio turning off this cash cow is zip, zilch, and zero. This saga had an ending already in 1983 and another in 2005. Those had legitimate finality. Time will tell if this one, and its willy-nilly trajectories, will resonate strong enough or long enough to be of honored and revered significance.
ANTICIPATORY SET AND PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
.Announcing his presence to the galaxy (and to us immediately in the yellow title scroll), a resurrected Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) has elevated the First Order into the Final Order with his Sith influence and the manufactured might of a colossal new fleet of Star Destroyers. His orders to his acolyte, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), are simply to “kill the girl.” That embattled female target remains Rey (Daisy Ridley), who has spent the undetermined amount of time since the Battle of Crait on the sidelines away from Resistance efforts to continue her Jedi training under the tutelage of General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher).
LESSON #2: CONFRONTING FEARS— As she continues to grow in immeasurable power and skill, Rey endures visions abound of possible future fates that hinge on an eventual rubber match with the former Ben Solo. Matching a quintessential Star Wars motif, Rey has become the next emerging hero obligated to stare down the opposition with a will strengthened by summoned bravery. With “never be afraid of who you are” encouragement, Rey’s fears are hefty emotional obstacles made thoroughly compelling by Daisy Ridley’s lead performance, her best in the series. She may not be given the best scripted material (more on that later), but the actress squeezes every drop of rooting vulnerability out of this crucial plight.
Meanwhile, Rey’s supportive comrades and Resistance operatives, including Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), help her stay a step ahead of Kylo Ren and his masked squad of weaponized knights. Flanked by their handy droids, the tight crew zealously join Rey’s pursuit of items and information deemed vital for the fledgling revolutionaries being able to bring the fight to Palpatine instead of awaiting overwhelming decimation. The invisible ticking clock urgency to blow enemies away and prevent “all for nothing” disappointment sets the plot off on numerous (as in too many) busy-bodied and lightspeed races and chases with weakly-presented MacGuffins in the crosshairs.
LESSON #3: THE VALUE OF PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL SUPPORT— Long has Star Wars been about populating a heightened unity in support of influential individuals. Call it amassing an army or the intimate recruitment of trusted friends. For Rey, her verbalized chant is the powerful wish of “be with me.” It is answered with “we have each other.” Whomever stands behind the lead antagonist or comes to the aid of the lead protagonist does so with fervent dedication and multiplying motivation. True to this now ancient battle of dark versus light, not all assistance entering the fray comes in corporeal form.
MY TAKE:
J.J. Abrams has always been more than capable at delivering sheer adventure for the silver screen. His urge for kinetic energy is answered by the polished production teams. Borrowed from good buddy Steven Spielberg, two-time Oscar-winning production designer Rick Carter teamed with VFX concept artist Kevin Jenkins to create otherworldly arenas of flash and flair. J.J.’s trusty cinematographer Dan Mindel (five previous collaborations between them) captured the accelerated action set to every possible hymn, horn, and hurrah from retiring composer legend John Williams. Merging four decades of cues and themes with impeccable placement and push, Williams earned that 52nd career Oscar nomination. Flying through this fantastical world will always remain a rousing treat. The wonderment and magic is there.
That said, no amount of razzle-dazzle filling eyes and ears can cover up the glaring examples of questionable creativity and incomplete development enacted by Abrams and lead screenwriter Chris Terrio. Even in a third film meant to wrap up storylines, The Rise of Skywalker compels itself to introduce even more tangents and swerves. It has characters that answer questions with more questions and moments ringing with vague parables rather than stamping cemented mythology. The arcs for Ridley and Driver fare the best, but the periphery is scattered with superfluous glaze. The isolation elements of The Last Jedi slowed matters down to create tangible suspense. This overpacked trilogy capper favors sprinting set pieces instead. Moving at a rush does not automatically or always create one in return, magic be damned.
To explain more crosses into spoiler territory, but there are downright mistakes here that expose the distance between forming merely a sense of finality, albeit a forcibly telegraphed one, and garnering a true, earned, and fitting consummation. Gauge all of this ambition straight toward the many synonyms of “finality.” Measure this film for “decisiveness,” “totality,” “resolution,” and even “integrity.” You may find its force more thin than thick.
3 STARS
EXTRA CREDIT:
Tumblr media
For the first time in quite a while (re: see every Marvel disc release in ten years), Disney has finally put out a stellar disc release worthy of full purchase ahead of merely a digital download of the feature itself. All it took was a legitimate and immersive behind-the-scenes documentary that actually showed the full filmmaking process. Little seven to fifteen minute featurettes can’t do that, no matter how many of them you pretend to pack on a second disc, not when half of them feel like sales pitches instead of documentation.
The Rancor-sized beast feature in question is the feature-length The Skywalker Legacy documentary.  Running a rich 126 minutes, the documentary follows the film’s production process from pillar to post. The access and observational intimacy into the process is phenomenal. Best all, they merge little flashbacks to the making-of footage of the original trilogy, making that “legacy” in the title the perfect term.
Those callbacks are some of the best moments to savor in the documentary because they each pile on a full circle of reflection and completion. For example, to see and hear Anthony Daniels compare walking onto the Tunisian heat with uncertainty in 1976 to stepping off the set in the same costume for the last time over 40 years later as a legend is beyond a treat. It’s a moment of pure satisfaction. Moments and threads like that are echoed and repeated for Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and the memory of Carrie Fisher, especially how this production had to remember here while finding a way to go on without her.
Probably the best legacy moment captured in The Skywalker Legacy is when director J.J. Abrams brought composer John Williams on the set to film a first-time cameo. After Williams finishes shooting his bit, J.J. has the octogenarian look around the “junk” around his character’s workshop table. Each tarnished prop in view was purposely constructed to represent all 51 of Williams’ Oscar-nominated scores. That’s an incredible display of easter eggs that will drop your jaw and just a taste of the complete devotion and keen respect J.J. Abrams operates with the entire shoot.
The figure to watch (and being watched) the most is Abrams. His insistence, no matter the time, resources, and expense, to shoot with as many physical layers of creation and authenticity as possible is extremely commendable. From black bean quicksand and an alien festival to the wild energy of scene-stealing stunt coordindator Eunice Huthart, the massive volume of sets, costumes, vehicle rigs, and puppetry is off the charts.  The armies of people who train and put their heart, soul, and sweat into work that may only be seen mere seconds or minutes on-screen is dizzying. All the while, his skillful focus and constant smile make the pressures and expectations and returns look invisible.
Outside of the feature-length centerpiece, there are few more samples of blockbuster dessert. They come in the form of five smaller featurettes.  Even these still beat the Disney/Marvel entries of talking schills and put their focus on the stories behind the movie.
One of the best of them is “Aliens on the Desert.” It’s a quick six minutes, but it outlines all of the set-up work in Jordan, where the visiting humans are the foreigners to the rugged vistas, that happens even before the circus-level main unit arrives. The scale of teamwork and practicality from the gear-loaded teams is something not normally shown for behind-the-scenes material that more often loves their headliners. The 14-minute “Pasaana Pursuit” feature is similar in its background focus.
If artistry gets you awestruck, you will enjoy the “Cast of Creatures” featurette. Like their shining moments in The Skywalker Legacy, the merger of makeup, engineering design, and puppetry have long made the fictional living things in Star Wars more tangible than any CGI power. This short is a tribute to the folks underneath the heavy gyros, foam, and rubber shells. The new droid D-O also gets a quick five-minute-and-change video on its character genesis of the more mechanical nature.
The final featurette is “Warwick & Son” and it’s the smile-inducing parting glance to the special features and nine-film saga. This snippet chronicles actor Warwick Davis returning to the Ewok role of Wicket and the chance to bring his aspiring actor son Harrison in to play his Ewok kin. Like the legacy circles earlier, to hear and see Warwick’s journey and sage maturity being celebrated is delightful. This caps a truly fantastic disc of special features.

Mark Edwards Power Efficiency Guide Review
Power Efficiency Guide is surely an online program that creates building a power source possible for everyone. Start with the windows and apply an energy efficient insulation film You'll increase the window's ability to seal in condition air on those days when the weather will not permit passive ventilation. It's a simple and inexpensive project but it can make a measurable difference in window efficiency.
Tumblr media
If you're renovating your bathroom, make sure to purchase energy efficient to help reduce water usage throughout the home. There are many different styles of shower head to choose from which are designed to aerate the water more thereby reducing water usage without a negative impact on your shower experience. A water efficient shower head could save a four person household (e.g. a family of four or even a shared student flat) around £70 a year on gas for water heating, as well as a further £120 a year on water bills if using a water meter. You should also look for low-flush toilets - saving at least one litre of water per use.
The Power potency Guide starts off by providing you with plenty of data concerning energy. Why? as a result of data is power. Again, pardon the pun. you'll be able to Power efficiency guide pricing skip this if you really don't wish to find out concerning the varied forms of energy sources and the way they work, however it's pretty attention-grabbing stuff.
You can also take assurance in knowing that the device was designed by an engineer relative of Mark's. His uncle was a pioneer in the world of electric cars. With this kind of knowledge, you know it can't be some gimmick or trick. If you look online at another review site, you can even see an electricity bill in which the price was very low, and very affordable.
Another option is to designate a single employee as the company's energy efficiency officer. Empower this person to monitor energy costs and suggest solutions. One important effort this person could spearhead right away is investigating tax incentives for energy efficiency efforts. The Business Energy Investment Tax Credit is a federal tax break available for any U.S. business that qualifies. Many states, counties and cities offer their own programs. Your utility company may offer incentives as well.
You're in the right place to find a range of ideas that will improve your home's energy efficiency. From simple tips like not leaving appliances on standby, to advice on choosing more energy-efficient appliances and guidance on how to get free home insulation.
Now, messing around with an energy source or building your own may seem quite intimidating and complicated but it truly isn't. The guide has broken down the steps needed to build this easy energy source so that everyone can take advantage of it. You actually don't need any type of building experience. You just have to place the right materials in the right position and - voila - you have power.
Boosting energy efficiency in buildings, vehicles, and appliances and equipment is an inexpensive, low-impact way to reduce climate pollution on a grand scale. One extremely effective way to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is through a more efficient home. Widespread use of efficient appliances, electronics, equipment and lighting, along with better insulation and other weatherization, could cut 550 million metric tons of carbon pollution a year by 2050—equal to the electric power emissions produced by Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, and California in 2016.

New and Exciting Solar Technologies for 2019
Tumblr media
Solar Power is by far the most popular and most efficient renewable energy source out. Technological advances are constantly being made in hopes to save the Earth from the ever foreboding threat of global warming. Here is a list and description of the latest in solar powered technology.
Transform Ugly Solar Panels with Solar Skins
Tumblr media
A high percentage of homeowner associations consider solar panels to be an unsightly home addition and thus have become a major barrier for the solar industry. Sistine Solar, a design firm based in Boston, Massachusetts, has developed an efficient “solar skin” product that can match virtually any roof top appearance, making existing solar panels more aesthetically beautiful. The skins are made from a thin film, coated with extremely durable graphics and integrated onto high efficiency solar panels. The technology uses selective light filtration to simultaneously display an image and transmit sunlight to the underlying cells with a minimal energy loss efficiency.
Light Up the Night with Solar Powered Roads
https://youtu.be/SNMFKKyFU60 2018 paved the way for many tests of an exciting new technology - solar powered roads. A few countries, including the U.S., China, Japan, France, and the Netherlands, have begun exploring different methods to safely and efficiently implement solar roads on a large scale. Most of them commonly feature technologies that will light up roadways and have thermal heating capacities to melt snow and ice during winter weather, but there’s a possibility that solar roads could even charge electric vehicles. The company Solar Roadways is the US-based frontrunner in the solar road race and is crowdsourcing funds to help move toward production. Solar Roads are Nothing but Beneficial Solar roads were designed so the glass panels could be installed on a variety of surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and playgrounds. These panels would not only pay for themselves, but would benefit both businesses and homeowners as the energy they generate could be used to power buildings. If installed nationwide, with over 30,000 sq miles of usable surfaces, solar powered roads would produce more energy than the entire country uses.  Although glass, the tempered panels, made from recycled materials, offer a superior surface to traditional road making materials. The panels are around 1.5 centimeters thick and can withstand 124 ton trucks driving over them. And even though they're glass, the surface isn't slippery and will never get potholes. The panels are also embedded with LED lights so they’ll be able to show road markings and send up-to-date traffic messages. The panels are wired so that faults can be detected by surrounding panels and be easily repaired. The power cables would be stored in trenches called “Cable Corridors” alongside the roads which would allow easy access by utility workers. Moreover, these corridors could be used to store fiber optic cables for high-speed internet. There’s immense potential in this technology that would lead to a massive decrease in reliance on petroleum and fossil fuels, and would cut CO2 emissions by a considerable amount. In the U.S., tests have already been underway along Route 66 for a few years now.
Solar Cell Fabrics lets You Charge Your Phone while you Exercise
Tumblr media
Coated in a conductive polymer material, this half-inch square of fabric contains an array of six rectangular solar cells. (Photo by Jeff Miller/UW-Madison) Since their inception, solar panels have largely been made from glass or plastic, both being materials that can be hard, brittle, and easily breakable. Since as early as 2001, scientists have tried to incorporate solar technologies into textiles but have only been successful with textiles such as stadium covers and carports. Recently, researchers Trisha Andrew and Marianne Fairbanks have figured out how to incorporate solar tech in ANY type of fabric. How Solar Cell Fabrics Work The latest solar textile technology combines two different lightweight and low-cost polymer fibers. The first polymer is coated with several chemical elements and compounds including zinc oxide, a photovoltaic material, which is then woven together with copper wire. This basically embeds the fiber with tiny solar cells. The second fiber is made of copper-coated polytetrafluoroethylene strips woven with more copper wire. These materials can generate mechanical energy or electricity from friction. As for battery storage, polyester yarn coated with nickel and carbon, and combined with polyurethane provides a flexible battery that keeps working even when repeatedly bent and folded. While solar cell fabrics are still in the testing phase, researchers have successfully shown that the materials can produce power when integrating them into many different fabrics. Some exciting applications include self-warming gloves, solar charging curtains, and numerous field applications for backpacking, hunting, medical, or military purposes. Pretty soon your shirt could be powering your MP3 player while you jog.
Solar Water Purifiers give Clean Water to Everyone
Tumblr media
Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new device that can purify water when exposed to sunlight. It isn’t the first of it’s kind, but major strides have been made to increase efficiency. The new design is roughly half the size of a postage stamp, can utilize visible light frequencies, and only requires a few minutes to work it’s magic. Previous designs required hours of sun exposure and could only harness ultra-violet rays. As it improves, this tech would be great for backpackers, self-sustaining swimming pools purified without the use of chlorine, and places around the world where clean water isn’t readily available. The experimental water purifier is a derived from the process for using solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, aka evaporation. But instead of splitting the two atoms, the new process oxidizes water to produce hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2. Even just a small amount will purify water as hydrogen peroxide disinfects water at a level of tens of parts per million, or about two tablespoons per 25 gallons. Some changes in materials still need to be made to make the blend safe to drink. But the research team believes that one day soon, a person could pull out their lightweight solar purifier, pour in some H₂O, and produce enough hydrogen peroxide through the sun-activated process to turn any questionable water source into a drinkable oasis. Brass Tacts: It’s Not Getting Knocked Down, It’s How You Get Back Up That Matters
Tumblr media
Oh man...
A few weeks ago I wrote in Brass Tacts on how we’re witnessing a live lesson in marketing with the Popeyes vs. Chick-fil-a (and other restaurants) battle with the southern-style chicken sandwich. Popeyes won’t sell as many chicken sandwiches as Chick-fil-a, but now they control the conversation through smart social media usage and limited advertising. Now we’re witnessing another live marketing lesson at the other end of the spectrum: how NOT to do an ad campaign, and most importantly how NOT to respond to the fallout from a faulty ad campaign. Of course, I’m talking about the now-infamous Peloton commercial than has been skewered and lampooned since being released in late November.
Like a gift-wrapped Peloton, there is sooooo much to unwrap here. And ironically, the one person who will come out of this better is “Peloton woman”, and it’s not because she pedaled her way to happiness on an overpriced exercise bike. And as always, content creators and broadcasters have something to learn from all of this.
Where to begin? Well let’s start with my general thought of Peloton and similar “personal trainer” systems-- it’s a bunch of hooey. At more than $2,200 for the bike and a $39 monthly membership, if you want a Peloton it will cost you about $2,700 for a year’s usage. Depending on the state you live in and how much you pay in taxes, that amounts to about one full paycheck of net income if you make $100,000 annually. Suffice to say, roughly 80% of the population in the United States can’t afford one of these things, so in my opinion any commercial for this belongs in the “Lexus December to Remember” fantasy department. Yes, you too can have a pricey exercise bike featuring someone in a studio yelling at you to pedal harder if you haven’t emptied your bank account on the Lexus with leather seats (or the two GMC trucks you and your spouse gifted to yourselves, or the Buick SUV you treated yourself to). Most people in their right mind aren’t putting a big bow on a $60,000 vehicle in front of their fortress-size home for Christmas like they do on the TV.
I am also a big believer that if you do want to lose weight, or stay fit and trim, or enjoy the energy and confidence boost that exercising can provide you, I suggest from my own experience that you eat less crap and get up and move around more. I lost 40 pounds over the last 10 or 12 years by not eating fast food and limiting fried foods, virtually eliminating my soda intake as well as drastically cutting back on how much beer I drank, and by pushing myself to exercise for 60 minutes 3 times a week. Want a bike? They sell them at Goodwill for $40. There, I just got you a bike for the cost of one month of a Peloton membership, and you don’t have your “personal trainer” Vinny screaming from a sound stage to sweat a little more for him.
Ok, so personal thoughts on Peloton and exercise aside, let’s move on to what’s happening at Peloton right about now. The company is having trouble (surprise!) convincing people not in a six-figure household to buy one of these things, and a weaker-than-expected IPO on NASDAQ in September isn’t helping issues. So the holiday sales time, a key time for anyone in the physical fitness/personal wellness industries, was a must-hit for Peloton. As you know, they released the infamous ad on November 21st, right before you feel guilty about the 8 or 9 pounds of food you’re going to eat at Thanksgiving. At first the ad seems like the usual sappy/fantasy commercial-- much like the husband surprising his wife with a luxury car, here’s the husband surprising his wife with this expensive exercise bike. And like every other Peloton (or similar item) commercial, she pedals away in the spare room of her really large house and ends up in a good mood at the end of the commercial.
But over time came the now well-known backlash. Why is this already attractive and thin woman forcing herself on to the exercise bike? Why is her husband buying this for her, she clearly doesn’t need this? And the cringe-worthy finish: after a year of documenting her Peloton use, she shows off the compilation to her husband who grins and projects this aura of “well I kept her thin and hot for another year!” While the supposed message was empowering women to do great achievements (albeit on an expensive exercise bike), the various messages received by viewers was “fat is bad”, “exercise ‘til you drop”, and “stay sexy ladies or he’ll kick you and that royal lifestyle to the curb”. The reaction to the whole fiasco BY ALL parties is more fascinating to me.
Tumblr media
“Now YOU get on that bike you smug little...”
Peloton got clobbered on Wall Street, losing upwards of $1.6 billion of its valuation after the ad became viral (although shares have recovered somewhat). Rather than admit that they were off the mark with the ad, Peloton is shifting the blame to the viewers, shocked that so many people “misinterpreted” what they were trying to sell (Hot tip: NEVER blame the audience for not getting your message. More on that later). Peloton’s CEO, John Foley, is suggesting this is old news (Hot tip: It’s not). And Peloton’s marketing partner, Mekanism, is very quiet on the whole thing, which is normally not a good sign. But these are all people behind the scenes. What about the people playing the roles of the misguided husband and wife?
This is the Brass Tacts lesson-- how you respond to being pulled into something you didn’t plan on being the center of attention on. And I’ll pull my own experience to the middle, as I was featured in a national ad campaign for H&R Block in the winter of 2013. Thankfully there was no controversy with that campaign, but even though I was used to broadcasting to thousands of people during my “day job” as the game day host of the Tampa Bay Lightning radio broadcasts, having my face pop up on TV screens and web ads across the nation for a solid two months was odd. And while the feedback from friends and strangers who saw the ad was all positive, it was still an adjustment for me to deal with the sudden notoriety I had. But after a few days I took it all in stride, and I still think back to that time 9 years ago when I was selected, filmed, and had a spot starring me delivered to the masses. It was a fun experience, but admittedly a little overwhelming. So if someone who is a professional broadcaster can be shaken a bit by a positive commercial experience, let’s see how our Peloton actors are doing.
Sean Hunter, a.k.a. “Peloton Husband”, was the first to speak out. Naturally, the guy who appeared in about 5 seconds of the ad, is playing the role of the victim. In TV and print interviews shortly after the public backlash, Hunter was stunned by the negative feedback that implemented him as a demanding and care-less husband. He was worried that this ad would stunt his day job as an elementary school teacher as well as his burgeoning acting career. But apparently he was so worried about this turn of events, he continued to give interviews and even changed his Instagram account name to “pelotonhusband”. I sure hope he survives to see his imminent stint on Dancing With the Stars.
But what about “Peloton Woman”? Her name is Monica Ruiz, and after laying low she released a statement through her agency on Saturday, also noting she was surprised by the backlash from the ad. But rather than play the victim, which in many ways she is if you see her character as an attractive young mother who has to pedal to nowhere and fast to keep her hot looks to keep her jackass husband happy, Ruiz ends up being the victor in this whole mess. As described in this New York Times article, actor Ryan Reynolds came to Ruiz’s rescue with one of the best response ads I have ever seen in my life. With Ruiz playing the role of a woman who has clearly been through A LOT lately, we find her at a local bar with her girl friends staring into space before chugging down a martini glass filled with Aviation Gin, Reynolds’ own gin product. As any good friends would do in a time of crisis, the friends reassure Ruiz that everything will be great and go ahead and throw back another. And by the way, one of the friends says to Ruiz, “you look great!”
Tumblr media
Our hero Monica (center) in the ultimate clap back ad. I’ll drink to that.
As detailed in the Times article, Reynolds’ had to act fast to make the spot happen, and his timing couldn’t have been better with the public outcry at full pitch. Since the spot was filmed and produced by his own production company, the turnaround was quick and the spot debuted this past Saturday. In the end Ruiz’s character, who was supposed to be the damsel in distress who needed to ride this damn bike in her living room at all hours of the day to make her doofus husband happy in a bizarre way considering she was already an attractive young mother living a heavenly life in this beautiful home with a beautiful daughter, turns out to be the heroine. She didn’t need an expensive exercise bike to feel good about herself (and thus her husband somehow feels satisfied), she just needed a stiff drink with good friends away from home.
And in real life, Ruiz is the undisputed champion here, with a primary assist to Reynolds for getting her into the response ad so quickly. Ruiz comes out on top, shows the world that she cannot only take the heat, but she’ll spin it around and make a nice cool drink out of it. The sympathy for the awful Peloton ad, followed by the smart comeback in the Aviation Gin ad, likely means she’ll have more companies knocking on her door as a spokesperson. Meanwhile Sean Hunter looks like a sniveling idiot, CEO John Foley is likely throwing things in his office and blaming someone else, and Mekanism is probably wondering if they’ve lost the Peloton account for good.
I’m not much of a gin drinker, but I’ll be honest in saying while buying whiskey for my wife’s world-famous Irish Cream this past weekend, I glanced over at the Aviation Gin display. Mission accomplished, and I hope Monica Ruiz makes a mint off of every acting gig she gets.
So what do broadcasters and content creators learn from this mess?
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE: You need to know who you’re talking to, and how you’re conveying that message. While Foley is trying to pretend like this fiasco is old news, even he acknowledges that the Peloton message needs to be clarified. If you think a certain segment of the population needs to be convinced that buying your product empowers them to do great things, then you need to find a smart and delicate way of conveying that message. Having an already attractive young woman playing the role of a married mother living in a gorgeous house needing to ride an exercise bike her husband mysteriously gifts her to apparently stay young and fit and attractive and snuggled nicely into this rich guy’s house in so many ways looks down at that woman-- and any woman watching the ad. How Peloton, or the ad agency Mekanism, thought this was a good idea or continued to green light it to completion is mind-boggling.
Don’t just “know” through demographic stats and information who your target audience is. KNOW your audience by putting their thoughts and feelings in to the equation. I’m willing to bet my weight in Aviation Gin that during the entire concept and execution of this campaign, there weren’t a lot of (or any) married upper middle-class women with children in on the process. That includes at Peloton, Mekanism, or any test audience for the ad. This wasn’t someone knowing the intended audience, it was someone thinking they knew who needed to see this.
Don’t blame the audience: Maybe the audience did misunderstand the intended message, but don’t EVER publicly suggest that they did. By doing so, you’re implying the audience (including your target audience) is too stupid to understand your high-brow style of communication. The fact is, if a large segment of the population throws back your content, then maybe (no definitely) you’re way off with your target.
I recall back in 2011 when the Tampa Bay Lightning unveiled a brand new logo and color scheme, the one thing that fans were very vocal about was the lack of black in the new uniform design. Black had been part of the team’s identity since its inception in 1992, why did it totally have to go away? Likewise fans demanded that the Lightning’s unique lightning bolt pants, also a staple of the uniform since 1992, be part of the new concept. Rather than try to explain to the fans that they misunderstood what the team was trying to do, then-CEO Tod Leiweke said the team was going back to the drawing board. Not only was black reintroduced to accent the predominantly blue and white uniform, the pants had the lightning bolt down the side. In this situation, the customer is always right, even if they’re wrong for not seeing what you were trying to do.
Don’t get caught up, when you get caught up: Sometimes you get stuck in the middle when something goes awry, even if it isn’t your fault. Sean Hunter didn’t go into the audition process for the ad desiring to be seen as this idiot husband demeaning his wife by suggesting the already rail-thin woman needed to exercise more. And while most reasonable people don’t see Sean Hunter the actor as a real-life embodiment of the husband, understandably some people just connected dots and thought Hunter and the husband were one in the same. But Hunter should have laid low, let the controversy pass (because it eventually will), and let Peloton or the agency take the heat. Instead he was one of the first to speak out, coming off like a whiny victim, and despite this “career-threatening” moment he is still getting paid. And if it’s an ASCAP deal for him, when the ad stops running he’ll still have $10,000-$15,000 in his pocket for being in the ad. That’s hardly a negative game-changer.
Compare that to Ruiz who stayed out of the fire, and was treated to a sympathetic audience not only because of the unfortunate thrust in to being a face of gender inequality but also for being put in a similar position as Hunter. Rather than book every interview and complain about how her life was ruined, Reynolds came along and was able to recast her in a much lighter role that gave he personality the redeeming qualities of humility (”I can’t believe I was in that ad?”) and humor (”I think I’ll suck down another glass of gin with my friends.”). Eventually this will all blow over, but Ruiz will be remembered for looking calmer and wiser than Hunter, and her acting career may last longer than Peloton.
When the waters get choppy around you from a storm that is out of your control, often the best thing to do is put your head down and keep rowing for land.

Beginning A Consulting Company Coming from Residence Without Knowledge.
Closing the deficit is actually certainly not practically decreasing costs, about GDP, but likewise regarding boosting income from our extremely reduced amounts. Johnson & Calvin ® Consulting, LLP will initially offer little to tool sized company, off brand-new projects to properly individual clients as well as well established companies, yet that carries out not in any way cease our company coming from increasing to be able to compete with the leading migration consulting agencies in the United States. This multiplied to 2 billion in 100 years and is actually assumed to cross the 8 billion mark by year AD 2000. Real-time Method (RTS) video games do not come a lot larger than those in the Overall Battle collection, and also the latest contestant, Struggles KINGDOM, is free-to-play. They seem to need even more opportunity to really grow up" as well as prepare for the responsibility that has adulthood. The vegetations were actually evaluated weekly throughout the growing time for each their progression as well as their appearance. After that Gaudreau, who scored his initial occupation NHL target in Activity 1, racked up 42 secs eventually to put Nashville in advance along with his wrister from the higher slot, benefiting from a display through Penguins defenseman Ian Cole to beat Murray glove-side. Thus, exposing this in thoughts, what 3 activities are likely to result in high bunch on the ligament; Running tough, managing carrying a heavy load and also performing prolonged rate work. Cut down on the heat energy designing to lessen the damage as well as your hair will be actually healthier, which indicates that will definitely grow back more powerful. The video game desires you to kind The label of the phase" right into package as well as blow submit. I'm a massive supporter of Mike Reiman's job which was featured just recently on the internet site Peter Malliaras is a leading illumination in tendon investigation and also his superb blog post is actually a should read through for anyone thinking about tendinopathy. The absolute most prosperous games in the Application Shop have actually been the ones that have been built especially for playing on the apple iphone. The PS4 version from the activity will definitely be actually playable at E3, and below you can see a few image, art work as well as screenshots, together with concerning 3 minutes from PS4 gameplay, and an instead stunning cinematic trailer through Blur Studio. This is actually very likely that the game will certainly have a variety of the advancements that other models in the set have actually seen, along with new things as well as motor vehicles embeded the video game. The game will not really be replaying any of the motion pictures however will definitely showcase characters and plot pieces off those films. Attaching the game to Sonic 2 would just trigger Sonic & Knuckles to pack Sonic 2's phase records along with the Knuckles personality records. Instead, Friday the 13th: The Activity will certainly take on more from a role like Invader: Isolation where the player should steer clear of from the fantastic rather than taking him on. Return through one monitor and stroll northwards as well as leave through yet another flow (no. 7 in the chart). This previous month I have actually soaked my check out with fresh water, chlorinated swimming pool water and also salty seawater. As well as on Android, you rank of the video game being free of cost - a one-off IAP just thinks if you intend to stay away from watching adverts, and have accessibility to different decks to try your good luck as a different character. One such response is, I am actually growing it out to give it to charitable organization." This will certainly cease most naysayers in their keep tracks of, but should not be actually made use of at low costs. The stew created with fresh water and some of each natural herb cannot be accomplished until you've acquired accessibility to all meals resources, therefore you could too merely chuck it out. There is some disagreement that such a video game are going to eat your time good enough that by the opportunity you are carried out, there will definitely be even more around for Switch over prepared to participate in. The research laboratory increased microbes in regular bottle is primarily a set lifestyle. The goal is actually to identify which bottle is actually heaviest through weighing them on the range. A lot of points - passing particularly - are sharper on PES's sound, along with you able to adapt your activity to both your team as well as your rival as the Artificial Intelligence brilliantly hums around the sound. Additionally make certain to manually draw your scouts out of the water when the shark gets also close as well as lose all of them back in at a near sufficient range for them to toss their harpoons. When www.dylla-vert.info/ play the game once more, under the exact same label, you will definitely acquire some new Jewels to address. Including adjustable tools as well as mechs, obviously, Blacklight: Revenge is actually an enjoyable, secure as well as free of charge technique to let off heavy steam then 9 to 5. And also, with over 1 million enrolled gamers and checking, there's tied to me no deficiency of teammates (and competitors) to join up with. Grow as well as recognize absolutely nothing is actually therefore dark & white or well-documented, specifically by indifferent, pathetic police & the justice unit. Simply puts, anonymous takes responsibility for their work and that does not. This is actually Cadbury dairy chocolate brown as well as consequently they appear actually rather naff - that's the kindest means I can think about to place this. I Am Level's wizard remains in integrating the center factors of such video games (Spectrum-style graphics, single-screen puzzle-oriented problems, and also an explorable chart) with modern mobile phone thinking. Along with job growth tagged at 14.4%, the least academic demand is a high school degree.
The race between a fungi consuming its method to the heartwood and also a plant expanding healthy and balanced skin and wet product to stop the adversary in its own tracks is actually a lot more exhilarating in comparison to a car chase, despite the impression that the timescale on which plants reside create such issues less pushing. Just no. There aren't excessive linear activities anymore as well as I'm starting to miss them.

2017 Kia Nero EX
With record-breaking performance, the Kia Niro was driven in the achievement of a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for Lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast in a hybrid car. Wayne Gerdes and co-driver Robert Winger achieved the record by driving the Niro EX 3,715 miles—from LA to NYC—using only 4.1 tanks of gas. That’s a record-setting mark of an incredible 76.6 mpg.
Introducing the 2017 Niro. A new approach to what a hybrid crossover can be. It achieves an EPA-est. 50 mpg combined and a near-600-mile range. And it features a high-efficiency 1.6L GDI engine and a smooth-transitioning dual-clutch automatic transmission that deliver pure fun behind the wheel.
The Niro is the no-compromise vehicle. Thoughtfully designed to combine the benefits of the crossover and hybrid worlds. Like the forward-looking engineering and optimized fuel economy of a hybrid. And the versatile design and practicality of a crossover. It’s the high-style, high-MPG adventure vehicle made for the no-compromise driver.
Unlike hybrids with continuous variable transmissions (CVT), the Niro comes with a highly responsive, smooth-shifting dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) that gives the Niro a fun-to-drive feel missing from the competition. Plus, it offers ample interior space you wouldn’t expect from a hybrid.
Thanks to its hybrid-optimizing powertrain, the Niro achieves superior fuel economy and range for its segment. And its refined exterior styling, with sculpted lines and an aerodynamic shape, sets the Niro apart from the rest.
It’s a destination all on its own. Loaded with available amenities like soft leather seating and a heated steering wheel, the Niro is designed for maximum comfort. Plus, it boasts more interior volume than the Toyota Prius and more headroom than the Honda HR-V. That means more room for you to enjoy the ride.
More than a cabin, it’s your space to relax. Featuring a power driver’s seat with lumbar support that adjusts up to 10 ways. And an available power sunroof that offers fresh air and sunlight at the push of a button. The Niro is a welcoming getaway tailored to you.
Available heated and ventilated front seats deliver personalized comfort no matter the weather.
The heated steering wheel offers comfortable driving on colder days.
Dial in to your ideal seat position and lumbar support level with the available 10-Way Power Driver’s Seat. And the Integrated Memory Seat (IMS) system conveniently remembers mirror and seat settings for up to two drivers.
