‘It’s senseless’: KCPD officer who saved 11-year-old after drive-by has message for shooter

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officer Jeremy Chick says he’s no hero. He was just doing his job Sunday night when he saved a little girl’s life.

An 11-year-old was shot twice in a drive-by shooting while sleeping at her home near 92nd and James A. Reed Road in Kansas City.

If not for Chick’s actions, doctors say she might not have lived.

“She lost a lot of blood. The floor was covered. The bed was covered,” Chick said.

He jumped into action and applied a tourniquet to her arm to stop her from losing more blood. The officer recruit with him applied pressure to her stomach wound.

“Everything to save a life,” he said. “That’s the most important thing to me in my world at the moment was her and getting her stable.”

He was concerned at one point that the life-saving technique wouldn’t be effective because of how small the girl’s arm was, but it worked.

The girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is now stable and recovering.

Chick has been with KCPD for seven years, and this was the fourth time he’s applied a tourniquet to help save someone’s life. It’s training that all KCPD patrol officers receive through Truman Medical Center.

But Chick said it’s disheartening that this most recent victim was an 11-year-old girl.

He has a poignant message for the person who pulled the trigger:

“You effected a child’s life for the rest of her life. Something this traumatic will affect everyone involved, whether it’s the first responder, the parents, the sister, the brother. It will affect the entire family for the rest of their lives. So it’s senseless.”

His department echoed his thoughts, calling the drive-by shooting the ultimate act of cowardice.

More information is surfacing about Demi’s overdose and the circumstances surrounding it.

It’s pretty upsetting, but we’re glad Demi is getting the help she needs.

In the early morning hours of July 24th, Demi returned home from celebrating a friend’s birthday at Saddle Ranch and texted her drug dealer who she allegedly has been using since May. After receiving his text, he came to her house around 4AM where the two smoked oxycodone from tinfoil, also known as freebasing. The drug was laced with an opiate, fentanyl – the same drug that killed Prince, Tom Petty and Michael Jackson, and is responsible for more than half of all overdose related deaths, including 20,000 deaths in the US alone in 2015. Once the dealer noticed Demi was in bed breathing very heavily, the dealer fled her home where she remained until her staff and friends found her at 1130AM. They called 911 and while waiting for the medics to arrive, one used Narcan that they had on hand to revive Demi.

She was immediately brought to the hospital where she remained for two weeks and that last week went to a rehab facility in Arizona and last Friday flew to Chicago to meet with an addiction specialist who focuses on sobriety, mental health and wellness. This isn’t her leaving rehab, as her facility actually recommended this specialist to her, and she is jumping at every opportunity to focus on recovery and getting better.

A source told E news that “She will be in rehab for several months and is doing an extensive program to ensure she gets the help she needs”. They added that she “hasn’t been in communication with anyone and is really focusing on herself.” That also includes limiting contact with her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, who visited her several times while she was stabilizing in the hospital. Her family has been in contact with him and updating him about her status, but is also focused on eliminating all distractions so she can really focus on her health.

As Demi said in her instagram post after she left the the hospital, “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”
