decorum
is a privilege of the powerful the absent                   and unaffected sitting in their perfectly-painted white plantations taking their tea in china on white tablecloths in tophats and tailcoats upon the hilltops                             above the fields tilled in blood
it is a paper shield of pretense to protect them from hearing the pleas of the people                                       for justice to pretend their consciences are                                                      spotless instead of blackened by hate                                                 and drowning in blood
it is a cudgel of malice                                      and misanthropy a weapon to beat down the beliefs upon which this nation is based equality under the law liberty and justice for all …but only if you wield the baton, they say, and practice decorum
We the People, Who are dying, Shot in the Streets, The Grocery Stores, The Dancing Halls and Shopping Malls, The Churches and Temples and Mosques and Synagogues, And the Schools                             (Always the Schools), We have no room for decorum. We will speak.
§
I saw a political lynching On live TV tonight, Two young Black men, Educated and well-spoken, Passionate, Elected Representatives of the People, Strung up inside the Statehouse By rope made from flimsy paper rules, For reasons as ridiculous As those that condemned their ancestors— But a couple generations ago— To hang on the courthouse square For that fatal breach of decorum: Smiling at a white woman.
And I will not remain silent. Fuck you and your decorum, Your obstruction, Your hatred and hate-mongering, Your worship of false idols Of Remington and Glock, Your dereliction of duty And disregard for our children, For our lives, For our future. I will speak                    and I will make you listen.

Thailand's top hotels || SofiaHotelHuahin
Thailand punches well above its weight when it comes to accommodations because it is home to some of the top hotels in Asia. The country's iconic addresses are saved for the beaches and islands; Chiva Som has frequently been named the best destination spa in the world, while Aman, Banyan Tree, and Six Senses are scattered throughout Thailand's top islands. In Bangkok, glitzy city hotels rival those found in New York and London.
Tumblr media
There are a lot of quaint and hidden hideaways to be discovered as well, where warm service and regional cuisine make you feel like you've had a taste of local life. The best hotels in Thailand are rounded together here for a rundown of our favorites.
Six Senses Yao Noi, Phang Nga
On the steep tiny island of Yao Noi, which is situated in Phang Nga Bay midway between Phuket and Krabi, Six Senses has mastered the castaway experience. On the speedboat trip to the resort, shoes are removed, and signs made of driftwood indicate to the white sand beach, the hilltop infinity pool, and a cluster of stilted homes with thatched roofs. Seeing the spa buried among the jungle's traditional long homes, getting to dinner by climbing through the multi-level bamboo and clapboard restaurants, and watching movies on the beach beneath the stars all feel like adventures. Use one of the hotel's bicycles to make a circuit of the island, passing through the fishing community and rubber plantations, and keep an eye out for pairs of sooty black hornbills.
Chiva Som, Hua Hin
Chiva Som is without a doubt the reigning queen of the Thai wellness industry; 27 years ago, when they first appeared on the scene, spa vacations in Thailand weren't even a thing. Since then, there have been many imitators, but none have been able to top the original's life-enriching blend of cutting-edge fitness (new equipment includes Iron Man-like Vision Bodysuits), medical diagnostics (blood work, gene testing), conventional Asian healing therapies, and hyper-intuitive staff. There are 16 distinct retreats to choose from, each of which will be meticulously customized to satisfy all of your mental, physical, and emotional needs. These retreats include stress and pain management, fitness boost, immune resilience, and elder wellness. This is where lifelong habits can be altered.
Banyan Tree Samui
The private pool in your home features a floating lotus flower and unparalleled panoramic views of Lamai Bay. Buggies transport visitors around the villas, private beach, spa, and elevated restaurant The Edge, which are connected by twisting steep walkways. Differently sized and shaped villas rise from the peninsula, but everyone has a view of the garden or the sea. The spacious bedrooms in the family and couple villas are open to expose private infinity pools, and the rainfall showers are large enough for two people. Beanbag chairs are set up on a wooden deck so that guests can relax and watch the sunrise over the water. Try renting a kayak or taking a private boat tour while spending the day at the private beach, or have afternoon tea at the beach café. If you go between April and May, you might get the chance to see local turtle hatchlings making their way into the water. It's imperative to visit the spa, particularly for the hydrotherapy massage. A steam room session precedes the ice-cold shower in the Rainforest treatment, which is followed by hard-powered water jets that target the back muscles.

for the tunnels
“You remember I told you about my grandfather?” I said.
“Hmm, yeah. I think so,” James said. “The strange one, right?”
    “Yes.”
    “What about him?”
“He used to tell me there were tunnels under these woods.”
    “Tunnels …”
“A whole network of them. Built 200 years back.”
James and I were on the hilltop. Late afternoon and pink and yellow sunshine. Blue frosty grass under our boots.
“But why would they be there?” he asked.
“Well, you remember how there used to be a mill in the other part of the forest. Where all that ruined masonry is. My granddad said they built an underground maze as well. They stored their equipment there.”
“So they fell into disuse then?”
“Well, that’s the thing: nobody ever knew if grandad was right or not. But he used to tell me these stories when I was a kid. That was one of them. Then he would come here, to the forest, and be gone for days. Looking for the tunnels.”
    James snickered, half-heartedly.
    “And he never found them?”
“I don’t think he did. But, honestly, he would go on and on about this underground thing. And – do you know when you’re a kid – and you like to believe in that kind of thing?”
“Umm. How old were you when he told you all this stuff?”
“Eh, like six or seven. I don’t know.”
“Yeah. Kids that age have fantastical brains. Go on?”
“I did the same as my grandfather. Not when I was that young, but a few years later. I came into the woods and looked for the tunnels.”
James watched me with eyes that blinked vague mockery but a switch of intrigue too, that told me to continue.
“Because I was still hooked on his storytelling. I can’t deny that grandad was slightly crazy but he had this great voice that you couldn’t help but listen to. So I would come here when I was off school. And scour around the whole forest. Just for any sign.”
    “And?”
“There was no conclusion. But there’s a clue, I discovered in boyhood, and it’s still here. It’s very close by. I only just remembered it now – since we’re close.”
James looked around the area. The murky boughs of the trees versus the sheen of frost and distilled snow on the hillside. I pointed at the trail which led into a denser pocket of woods. Down the other flank of the hill.
“It’s this way, James. You want to come see it?”
    He lit a cigarette.
“This all sounds a bit dodgy, Carson. What is it you have to show me?”
“It is spooky, but it’s cool as well.”
“You won’t take me into the bushes and stab me, will you Carson?”
    “Haha. Let’s go.”
The path was rapt with ice and we were careful not to slip. James nearly fell over when we got into the gloom of the trees and he swore impressively and I laughed. Down, down, we went. Pine and birches. Crows cawed in the canopy above us. We came to where the path cut off into two. To the left was where the dogwalkers walked and to the right, where the ivy all but smothered this narrow brown lane.
“What’s up with you, Carson?” James called, lighting a new cigarette. “Where are we going?”
    “Have faith.”
The ivy was strong and handsome and navy blue in the now reclining light. It would be dark at the end of the hour. I worried that I might be lost, or that I hadn’t remembered correctly where it was.
But then I saw the dead tree. This ragged, leafless, tree which had died long ago and was still upright: had been deceased since I was a tot. Was surprise it was still standing, now I was an adult.
“Over here, James,” I called. And cut off from the lane, going behind the dead tree, onto this thick meadow of ivy. Within that I searched about the floor. James hung behind me. He’d quit smoking and he hovered, silently concerned.
I bent down to the ground and judged, from my memories, where the spot would be. Lifted up a patch of ivy.
    There it was.
    “Here it is, James.”
He came closer and looked at the square of metal which lay under us.
“Is it …” he breathed, “a trapdoor?”
Which was my exact same thought when I first beheld it, twenty years back. It was this grated metal square fixated in the earth, overgrown with plantation, and now glistening with frost. James crouched, to inspect closer.
“Or is it not just one of those drainage things?” he said. “Like you see on the street?”
“That’s what I thought as well … but we’re not on the street.”
James ran his fingers along the seams of the trapdoor. They were clogged with rust. His fingertips reached the hole at the bottom of the square.
    “That’s a keyhole, Carson?”
    “Could be.”
“But it seems too small for a key.”
“I was obsessed with this door for months. And I never found out a way to get it open; it drove me psychopathic, trying to figure out a way to open it up.”
James stood up. Took box of cigs out and tapped it with his lighter.
“Carson. I thought you were baiting me this whole time.”
    “Ha.”
He still hesitated with the next smoke, watching the door.
“You could certainly fit a body through that square.”
    “Uh hu.”
“Maybe it’s way too rusted over to pry it up. Now. If it’s been there for two centuries.”
“Perhaps. But there must be some way to do it.”
“Use a pick-axe? Or a wrench? It could be possible.”
“I was just too young to do that kind of thing, in the past.”
James flicked his lighter on and the flame made these magic colours in the threatening dark. The end of the new cig beamed in a red dot.
“What’d your grandfather say, Carson?” after he exhaled.
    “Huh?”
“What did your grandad say when you found this trapdoor?”
“Oh. I never told him about it.”
    “Why!”
“He’d already passed away. A stroke.”
    “Ah. Sorry.”
“I really wish he’d still been alive when I made the find. He would’ve helped me for sure. But yeah, he had this enormous stroke and it killed him within a few days.”
“So, you think some of your grandfather’s craziness has rubbed off on you, Carson?”
“Ho ho. Definitely. Just in a different way.”
