THE KING OF PENTACLES, THE EIGHT OF RODS AND A REVERSE EIGHT OF PENTACLES
Carol raced through the airport, her small carry-on rolling behind her with it’s wheels rattling. She arrived at the gate of her connecting flight just as the words “cancelled” flashed up onto the over head board. Carol, panting and out of breath, placed her hand on her hip and bent over slightly to catch her breath. “Fuck.” she swore on a exhale. She pulled her phone from her bag and checked the flight status app. Nothing until tomorrow morning. Carol was stuck in Detroit. The earliest flight available was a 6:15 AM flight. Carol stepped up to the counter to make sure she would be able to get on that flight. A man in a business suit stepped up next to her at the counter and Carol gave him a side eye. “I think the line starts behind me sir. Not next to me.” Carol said as the man’s elbow bumped her shoulder. “Oh sorry…I didn’t see you standing there.” The man stepped back as one of the flight attendants stepped up to the counter. Carol looked at the woman’s tired face and her name tag. “Candice, it looks like you’ve had a rough day too. I know this sucks for you.” Carol put on a smile and tried her best to look sympathetic. Candice nodded wearily and asked how she could help. “Is there any way I could get a boarding pass for that 6:15 morning flight to New York?” Candice typed on the keyboard in front of her and shook her head. “The earliest I can guarantee you is 8:45 AM.” Carol nodded and replied “Put me on it!” Candice typed a bit more and printed out a boarding pass. “Thank you soooo much.” Carol said as she took the boarding pass being handed to her. She gathered her things and turned away from the counter. Then she started searching for a hotel room and scored a suit at closest Marriot with points from her travel card.
As Carol made her way to the hotel shuttles, she felt a little despondent at spending another night alone in a dreary hotel room. She paused at a take-and-go kiosk and pondered the questionable salads and sandwiches. Then she shook her head and decided to treat herself at the hotel and order room service. The hotel shuttle was waiting for her when she stepped out of the airport. Carol hopped on, dragging her carry-on bag and sat quietly as the shuttle made it’s short drive to the hotel. At check in, Carol ordered a salmon burger, fries and some tonic to be delivered to her room. She had two airplane bottles of gin in her purse. She opened the door to her suit and kicked off her heels as she walked into the room and then face planted onto the bed. Eventually she rolled over and pulled herself up to a seated position. She pulled her laptop from her bag and connected to the hotel WiFi. Carol had already filed her report for the consultation she had done for UWM, so she opened a browser window to scroll through beach properties. This was becoming Carol’s new favorite pastime. She found that she could spend hours looking at various condos and bungalows for sale in places like Hawaii and Florida. Carol knew that this new obsession was a sign that she was burnt out and tired of this hectic life that consisted of airports and hotels.
A knock at the door signal the arrival of the room service she had ordered at check-in. She got up and answered the door. Carol let the attendant into the suit and managed some small talk as the young man rolled in her dinner tray. She tipped him and then shut the door behind him. Carol rummaged in her bag and pulled out one of her little gin bottles and made herself a gin and tonic before tucking into her meal. She scrolled through house listing while she ate until she came across a cute little bungalow on the island of Maui. It was not directly on the beach, but nestled back into the jungle across the road from the beach. Three bedroom, two bath, with a carport. Carol scrolled through the images for the listing. The interior looked fairly new and in good shape, but the front porch and back patio were the things that peaked her interest the most. Carol could picture herself sitting on that front porch with her morning cup of coffee. She could see herself puttering around in the gardens around that back patio.
Carol wanted this house.
Carol opened a second tab in the browser window and logged into her bank account. She looked at the balance in her savings and then she looked at the purchase price of the house. She could do this. She could buy this house easily. The next question was if she bought this house, what would she do about a job? She had a sizable nest egg, but she wasn’t any where near retirement. She would have to get a job. Carol thought about this as she munched on a french fry. This job of her’s could be done remotely. Maybe not with the current company she worked for, but she could freelance. Carol took a drink of her gin and tonic and then clicked on the link to contact the realtor selling the property. Then she started making new plans that did not include being stuck in a airpot hotel in Detroit.

A self-made man
My father died twenty-four years ago today.
As I drove to the airport this morning — I'm on a short trip to San Diego — my mind drifted back to him and what he was like.
I don't think of Dad often anymore, and when I do it's mostly superficial stuff: Dad was fat. His hair was wild and wavy. He could be gruff. He was funny and had a contagious laugh. Sometimes he wasn't a very nice guy. Sometimes he was. But it's tough to remember what Dad was like as a presence, you know?
What I remember most about him was how Dad could do anything he set his mind to. This isn't nostalgic hero worship. It's how he actually was. My father could teach himself to do anything he wanted. And he wanted to do a lot.
A Self-Made Man
I'm not sure where my father's love of learning and experimenting came from. His parents were a simple, devout Mennonite couple.
When I knew Grandma and Grandpa, they managed a small farm. They had milk cows. They raised blueberries. They grew and canned vegetables. Grandpa cut his own wood. He'd been a janitor at the local high school, but by the time I was around, he was retired. Every night, he and Grandma sipped Sanka and played Scrabble. Their existence was simple, ordered, and serene.
My father wasn't simple. His life wasn't ordered. He was not a serene man. He was complex. He was messy. He was boisterous. He was a force of nature. (I come by my ADD honestly.) He had many interests, and he liked to indulge them all.
Dad wanted to be a pilot, so he took flying lessons. In his twenties, he became a flight instructor at a small local airpot. When my brothers and I were young, he'd sometimes take one of us on a joy ride to Salem or Eugene. He stopped flying, though, after crashing his Cessna while practicing touch-and-go landings in the field behind our trailer house.
Dad wanted to sail solo to Hawaii. Throughout the 26 years that I knew him, he nearly always owned a sailboat. (The only times he didn't were when our family was mired deepest in poverty.) When I was very young, he built his own sailboat following instructions in borrowed library books. My family didn't travel for family vacations; my parents took us sailing down (and up) the Columbia River.
Dad loved electronics. He built a lot of his own gadgets, designing and soldering circuit boards. When I was old enough, he helped me build a radio so that I could listen to Portland Timbers games and old-time radio dramas on local stations.
Dad built other stuff too. He built so much stuff that projects were often abandoned half-finished.
He ground mirrors to build his own telescope — then left them lying around in a bedroom drawer for years. He constructed a windmill, but something about his math was off and the thing collapsed from the weight of the canvas sails when he tried to mount them. He constructed outbuildings on our two acres, and then built an addition to the back of the trailer house — an addition that was never really completed.
In high school, I took over Dad's car — a 1982 Datsun 310GX. (Looking back, I'm not sure how this happened but it did.) The car “blew a head gasket” one day. Rather than pay a mechanic to repair it, Dad tore the engine apart himself, found and fixed the problem, then re-assembled everything. He taught me how to change the oil and the brake pads and the headlights…but there's now way I could ever pull apart an engine!
When personal computers became “affordable” in 1977 — looking back, they were the equivalent of $11,000 in today's dollars! — Dad bought one and taught himself to program it. (And I taught myself to program it too.)
My father could play guitar, fly an airplane, sail a boat, build a boat, build a computer, program a computer, build a radio, build a greenhouse, build a house, repair an engine, write fiction and poetry, build complex machinery, build a telescope, start a business (or six), and more. And he taught himself how to do almost all of these things.
A Serial Entrepreneur
As I've mentioned before, my father was a serial entrepreneur. He was always starting businesses.
He programmed accounting software but could never find anyone to buy it. (It was 1980, I think. He was a few years too early.) He built a greenhouse complete with automated watering system, then tried to start a nursery. Nobody wanted to buy his azalea and arborvitae. He mowed lawns. He sold chocolate bars.
Most of his business ventures failed, but twice he hit paydirt.
First, he built a business called Harvest Mills, which first manufactured wheat grinders, then added food dryers to the line-up.
In 1985, eight years after he sold Harvest Mills, Dad founded Custom Box Service, a company that produces small runs of corrugated packaging. Dad designed and built all of the machinery himself. Those machines have been in constant use for thirty-three years. They haven't been completely trouble-free, but come on! These are machines created by a random guy from rural Oregon. That's pretty amazing.
A Modern Homesteader
When I was in second grade, my parents decided they wanted to move to Canada. For once, they were flush with money. My father had sold Harvest Mills to a bankruptcy attorney in Utah and was to be paid $5000 every three months for the next fifteen years.
When Dad had money, he liked to spend it. If he had money, he'd buy a sailboat. Or an airplane. Or a hi-fi stereo. Or a personal computer.
This time was no different. This time, though, he wanted to use the money to buy twenty (or forty) acres in rural British Columbia. I don't know why. (He was always afraid of nuclear war, though, so this could very well have been a way to escape the “blast zone”.)
Mom and Dad piled us three kids into one of our two beat-up Plymouth Valiants — we called one “dirty white” and the other “dirty red” — and drove us fourteen hours north to Vanderhoof, a small town that's pretty much what you'd expect to find in central B.C. so close to Alaska. There, we spent a long weekend in real-estate offices and visiting properties.
I remember driving down dirt roads and strolling along swollen streams. I remember wandering around farmyards. I remember watching a war movie in our hotel room. But I don't remember any of the houses we visited, and I don't remember why we never moved. My guess is that Dad didn't have as much money as he thought he did. Or perhaps Mom had objections to moving to the middle of nowhere?
Instead, he bought twenty or forty acres near the trailer house and tried his hand at being a wheat farmer. It was hot and dirty work, but it was another thing that he could teach himself to master. Unfortunately, he had no way to master the national economy, which didn't have a high demand for wheat when it came time to sell. He abandoned that venture too.
An Inspiration
One of my favorite exercises is trying to trace a financial family tree. What did my parents teach me about money? What attitudes did I get from them? What habits? And what did their parents pass onto them? Did I get anything from that generation?
Dad was self-reliant…and he wasn't. He could do almost anything…but he seldom did. He was a dreamer…but he rarely pursued his dreams.
For many years, I thought of myself as “not like Dad”. I don't know if this was a conscious decision or if I simply believed that I was different. In any event, I didn't think of myself as a DIY guy. I couldn't build a windmill or a sailboat or a telescope. I couldn't repair an automobile engine.
In recent years, however, I've been very aware of just how much I picked up from my father, how much he influenced my money blueprint. I can see where I got many of my ideas and habits and values.
I'm intellectually curious. I'm entrepreneurial. I love travel and adventure. I'm drawn to the idea of living somewhere remote — just me and Kim and our zoo. And lately I'm learning to love DIY.
The older I get, the more I see my father in me.

Beat Bristol Airport Blues - 5 Tips Take the Stress Out of Your Next Trip
Have you noticed how air travel just gets more and more stressful? Not just in the air either, as security queues lengthen and airport traffic becomes busier. Savvy business travellers have long known that stress-free travel starts with a well-chosen airport hotel. Now, whether you travel for work or for leisure, you can take advantage of the top tips professional travellers have used for years.
1. Spend the night before your flight at an airport hotel
Smart travellers plan to start their trip in a comfortable airport hotel the night before their flight. It eliminates stressful flight-day travel and there's the bonus of waking up revitalised on the morning of your trip.
2. Avoid noisy city centre hotels
Unless you're a real party animal, resist the temptation of city centre bright lights and nightlife. As well as often being some of the furthest hotels from the airport, city centre accommodation is often noisy. For perfect relaxation, carefully selected accommodation near Bristol airport will ensure you get a great sleep - with the added benefit of a short transfer the next morning.
3. Search out hotels that offer free airport transfers
When choosing your hotel, choose one that offers free transfers to and from the airport. It's a big draw for travellers; that's why some Bristol airport hotels provide this service for their guests, taking the strain with comfortable hotel-to-terminal Bristol Airpot transport. Even better, why not combine a free airport transfer with secure hotel car parking.
4. Take advantage of secure hotel car parking
Not all airport car-parking is as secure and reliable as it should be. Why risk your pride and joy being vandalised or stolen when the best hotels near Bristol airport offer guests the peace of mind of secure onsite parking while they're away. What's more, hotel parking rates are often extremely competitive.
5. Book a night at your hotel on your return
There's nothing worse than a long cross-country drive as soon as you touch down after your international flight. Especially if you're in relaxed holiday mood, why not end a great holiday in style with an extra night at a hotel near the airport. Anything that makes the trip of a lifetime last a little longer has to be good - and you'll be fresh and relaxed for the drive home next morning.

This post is part of a five part City Guide series as I explore Europe as a brand ambassador for Bonwi. It has affiliate links to things I genuinely like.
As soon as I arrived in Barcelona and walked 15 minutes from Plaça Catalunya to my hotel, I knew that my three night stay wasn’t going to be enough to discover the ins and outs of this stunning city. Simply gazing at building after building of the Catalan art nouveau architecture was enough for me to think, “I need to come back to Barcelona for a longer trip”. Then, once I tasted the local gastronomy, it was decided; I was definitely coming back. But before I get ahead of myself with prepping for my second trip to Barcelona, let me share with you what made me fall in love with Barcelona from what I did to how I got around.

How to Get to Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the world’s most visited city in the world, so naturally there are a ton of ways to get there! Since I’m only a short 2 hour flight away, I opted to fly. I flew with Vueling, a low-budget Spanish airline, for only €65 round trip in March. You can also get to Barcelona by train, renting a car, or carpooling.
Note: Vueling has a one carry-on limit of 10KG. To prevent paying a hefty checked luggage fee at the airport, weight your carry-on before hand [amazon_textlink asin=’B00NW62PCA’ text=’with a hand scale,’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’tafrafo-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’a4f26820-1b9b-11e7-9825-d30ec1e31f78′] or buy checked luggage online in advance.
How to Get to Your Hotel From the Barcelona Airport
Barcelona Airport Aerobus

On the way in, I took the Barcelona Airport Aerobus, which runs every 5 to 10 minutes outside both Terminals 1 and 2, takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic, and has wi-fi on board! It stops at very popular areas such as Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Espanya, and other stops. I got off Plaça Catalunya then walked to my hotel using an offline version of Google Maps since I didn’t have data.
You can buy a ticket directly on the bus with cash or at a ticket machine right in front of the bus with a Pin card or cash. A single ticket costs €5,90 and a return ticket cost €10,20 (as of 4/7/17).
Tip: The bus driver won’t give you change if you have a bill larger than 20 so bring some small change for this, use a card with a Pin at the machine, or pre-buy tickets online.
If you are going to use the Barcelona Airport Aerobus to get back to the airport, make sure to get on the right bus. The A1 line goes to Terminal 1 and A2 line goes to Terminal 2.
Public Transportation
Mike flew into Barcelona earlier than me since he was coming from Amsterdam and I was coming from Berlin. He only paid €1 for the train because by buying a T10 ticket, a 10-trip card usable on all public transportation in the city for €10. We knew that we’d be using public transportation over the weekend and that he’d use the card on the way back so buying a T10 ticket was a good idea.
The RENFE train runs every 30 minutes from the airport and stops at major stations such as Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or Clot. Then you can walk from those stops or transfer (for free with the T10 card) to another mode of transportation.
Note: If you have a Barcelona city card, which includes unlimited public transportation, free access to over 20 attractions, and discounts on various sights and attractions, then your train ride from the airport to city center is included.
Taxi
Since I had a very early flight leaving Barcelona, I opted to take a taxi back to the airpot. It cost about €35.00, which I paid in cash. The hotel reserved the taxi for me the night before, but you can use the myTaxi app to schedule or call one.
Where to Stay in Barcelona
Neighborhoods in Barcelona
If it’s your first time in Barcelona, you probably want to stay in places with multiple transportation connections and easy access to tourist sites. Thus, Placa Catalunya, Las Ramblas or the Gothic Quarter (the old town) are your best bet. If you’re a seaside lover, then check out La Barceloneta, but if you want to get away from the tourists, try Gràcia, a hip bohemian neighborhood with young professionals, or Sant Andreu for a local neighborhood.
I Got Back $237 in Rewards From My Three Night Hotel Stay!
Whether it’s in the heart of the city or in a more local neighborhood, I would book your hotel through Bonwi because of how awesome their rewards program is. Basically, they give you more rewards than any other hotel site, which means your points build up faster for free trips Visa cash cards, Amazon gift cards, and more. I plan on going to Greece with my rewards!
Anyways, I stayed at the Olivia Balmes Hotel for 3 nights and got back $237 in rewards! My hotel cost $818 for 3 nights, which means I got 29% of it back in rewards. Since I booked the hotel through my credit card, I also got 2% on there meaning I got a total of 31% back. This is much much more than other sites like Expedia or Hotels.com will give you. I would know because I used Hotels.com for a couple of years and only got a measly free $80 one-night stay, which was like 5% of what I spent. Bonwi is a better value and much more giving.
Here’s how much rewards in dollars I have built up already:
Bruges 3 Night Trip – $248 Berlin 3 Night Trip – $275 Barcelona 3 Night Trip – $237
Total in Rewards From 3 Trips = $760
Isn’t that exciting!? If you want to build up points quickly too, check out Bonwi, and get $15 in points just for signing up.
How to Get Around Barcelona
Walk
Barcelona’s architecture is absolutely stunning. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from every detail from the intricate patterns of the wrought-iron balcony railings to the bold designs of the tiles inlaid on the buildings. Walking around is the best way to take it all in. If you’re on public transportation too much, you will miss out on a lot of history that makes Barcelona what it is.
Tip: If you don’t have data, download an offline version of Google Maps whenever you have wi-fi, and star your hotel and other places of interest on it.
Public Transportation
Public transportation in Barcelona is clear and straightforward. The only trouble I had sometimes was finding the entrance to specific lines above ground, but if you’re at a station that interconnects a few lines, then you can access the line you need underground. To get directions for public transportation, I used Google Maps, but if you don’t have data, pull up directions beforehand.
If you plan on using public transportation at least 10x, then I recommend getting the T10 card. It has 10 trips for €10 euros whereas a single ticket cost €2,15 (in 2017). This is a great value because you can use it for multiple people and can be used on the train to/from the airport.
If you intend on doing lots of sightseeing and using public transportation a lot, then get the Barcelona city card. You get free unlimited public transportation for 72, 96, or 120 hours in addition to free entry to some attractions and discounts to others. Check out the great reviews and prices here.
Tip: Don’t be shy about going on the bus! It’s a great mode of transportation. To make sure I don’t miss my stop on the bus, I check around what time I should be arriving, keep an eye out on my watch, then open my Google Maps as I’m nearing my location. Even if I don’t have data, it’ll show me a GPS point of where I am.
myTaxi or Taxi
Like Berlin, Barcelona doesn’t have Uber, but they do have an equivalent, myTaxi (iPhone, Android). There are also taxis floating around the city if you want to get one the old school way; by waving one down or walking up to one.
What to Do in Barcelona
I’m a fairly chill traveler who likes to eat, drink, and do whatever locals do, but Barcelona is so overwhelmingly beautiful that I wanted to do more than my usual ‘not much’ type of trip. I had to go sightseeing! Here are my recommendations.
Get Lost in Antoni Gaudí’s Works of Art
I’ve never been so enthralled by a city’s architecture as I was by Barcelona’s. One of its most well-known architects is Antoni Gaudí. You could spend a whole weekend just visiting his works of arts, but here are a couple of must-sees.
La Sagrada Família

Words can’t describe how magnificent this church is. It is most unique religious structure that I’ve seen in 20 countries. Everything in the church is purposefully placed and designed so make sure to get the audio guide to get an understanding of all the thought that went into this place. This is one of those places where your eyes will be darting from one corner to the next ’cause you don’t know which column, color, or glass pane to look at!
Tip: Buying tickets online is much cheaper than getting it in person. Also, tickets tend to sell out depending on the time you want to go get tickets online.
Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
Photo via Pixabay by Unsplash
This striking building is the last building that Gaudí built and is his most extravagant design as he had complete freedom with the plan and budget. I really wanted to go here but hesitated because the ticket is €29,00, but after dinner one night at 10PM, I happened to walk by La Pedrera just as they were starting their night-time experience. It cost €34 but noting that the group would only be six people including me and feeling a bit tipsy from my dinner, I thought, “Well, what are the chances that I’d walk by something I wanted to do exactly when the next tour would start. It’s a sign to go in!” I LOVED IT!
My favorite part of the tour was exploring La Pedrera with only five other people. Besides the in-depth explanation of who Gaudi is, what the significance of the building is, and its place in history when it was built, with such a small group, the tour guide was able to go “off-script” by answering questions we wouldn’t have found on information cards. The show and view of Barcelona at night were beautiful, and the glass of cava at the end was the cherry on top!
Tip: Book the last tour of the night so you have the smallest group possible.
Gaudí Route
There are many other buildings that Gaudí designed, and each one is special in its own way. If you want to see as many as possible, check out this map on the Barcelona Tourism site.
Walk Around the Gothic Quarter (Old Town)

The history of the Gothic Quarter goes all the way back to the Romans who founded the city in 133BC. You can see remnants of Roman ruins nestled in between 14th and 15th century monuments. All the history here plus the modern conveniences and fun of shopping make this a truly wonderful neighborhood to meander about!
Revel at the Stunning Sand Sculptures in Barceloneta

Obviously going to the beach is a must in Barcelona, but don’t head straight to the water. Take a moment to view the stunning sand sculptures built alongside the boardwalk. It’s really amazing what these sand sculptors can do with sand!
Where to Eat in Barcelona
Barcelona is a foodie’s heaven. They seem to do everything right from tapas to paella and seafood to even ramen! Make sure to plan your meals as much as your sightseeing because you won’t want to miss out on these delicious bites.
Four Local Restaurants with a Barcelonian
I had arrived in Barcelona late Saturday afternoon, and by Sunday night, I was (fake) panicking a little. I only had one day left in Barcelona and still hadn’t eaten all the food I had wanted to! Luckily, my food tour with Food Lovers Company cured my woes, and I left Barcelona more than satisfied with all the food I got to try.
This tapas tour featured in Rick Steves’ Guide to Spain is totally worth €125 because over 4-4.5 hours, you:
– go to four restaurants and leave extremely full at the end, – taste a variety of local dishes that you would’ve never thought to order on your own, – get a full drink at each restaurant of local wines and liqueurs, – get a walking tour as you go from restaurant to restaurant, – can ask for recommendations for the rest of your trip I bombarded her with “Where should I eat …” questions, – get personal insight on the Catalan culture, – and hear stories about living and growing up in Barcelona because your guide is from Barcelona (unlike other food tours operated by expats).
Bonus: This tour brings you to a secret viewpoint of Barcelona that tourists don’t know about! This was a wonderful surprise that I didn’t know the tour included. It was so lovely to see Barcelona lit up in the night!
Tip: Book this for your first night in Barcelona so you can ask for recommendations for the rest of your time there.
Mercado de La Boqueria

I love going to markets. The atmosphere is lively and buzzing about food! It’s a great way to see what types of fruits, vegetables, and general foods locals like to eat and a good place to have a bite here and there. Around the market are bars selling food and drink so you can come here for lunch or a light snack. You can’t go wrong stopping at any of these places as you’re guaranteed to have fresh and top-quality ingredients.
Mercado de La Boqueria La Rambla, 91 http://www.boqueria.info/
Restaurant La Pepita
This is the best tapas place to go for foodies who want a warm, casual, and live vibe for dinnertime. The menu is diverse, and everything on there is good– seriously. Try the Grilled Pulpo Over Mashed Potatoes, Steak Tartare, and of course, Pepitas!
Tip: They don’t take reservations and tables can fill up quickly so go when they open.
Neighborhood Note: This restaurant is in Grácia, which is a trendy neighborhood that’s good for nightlife, so stay in this area afterwards for drinks.

You can’t go to Barcelona without eating paella so head to Maians to have a classic paella in a local, down-to-earth environment. Try some of their tapas too like the calamari, which is lightly fried and tender.
When we were there, some musicians came in off the street playing lively music. After a couple of rounds, they collected coins from people, which they used to buy drinks at the bar! I found that to be amusing.

Koku Kitchen Ramen

Who would’ve thought that Barcelona is a great city to eat ramen in?! Well, it is. Ramen’s been quite trendy in Barcelona so local establishments here have made it their responsibility to do it right. One of these places is Koku Kitchen Ramen. Their broth is flavorful, and the noodles are oh so satisfying. Also, that egg? #eggporn
Neighborhood Note: Koku Kitchen Ramen is in the Gothic Area so plan to come here when you’re exploring this neighborhood.

What to Pack for Barcelona
While you pack and get ready for your trip, download the offline version of Google Maps so that you have a map on hand starred with the places you’ll be visiting even if you don’t have data. Here’s what I brought with me, which includes a mix of must-have electronics and cute clothes!
