The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection is dropping its subpoena of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the software vendor Salesforce for information related to fundraising emails the party sent ahead of the attack, multiple media outlets reported.
The Washington Post first reported on Friday that counsel for the RNC and Salesforce were notified this week that the Committee is withdrawing the subpoena, deeming the information not necessary anymore at this stage of the investigation.
“Given the current stage of its investigation, the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol has determined that it no longer has a need to pursue the specific information requested in the February 23, 2022 subpoena that it issued to Salesforce,” Douglas Letter, the House general counsel, wrote in an email to the RNC and Salesforce, according to the Post.
Salesforce owns the platform that the RNC uses to fundraise.
The House Committee subpoenaed Salesforce for information related to RNC fundraising efforts in February, saying the committee and the Trump campaign solicited donations with unfounded claims that the 2020 presidential election was tainted by massive voter fraud. A Jan. 6 Committee spokesperson said in March that the Committee wanted to investigate the impact of false messages in the weeks leading up to the Capitol attack and where donations were directed.
The RNC filed a lawsuit to quash the subpoena in March, saying that it violated the First Amendment and Fourth Amendment to the Constitution and did not “advance a legislative purpose.” A federal judge rejected the lawsuit in May, saying that it did not violate the RNC’s constitutional rights and that the Select Committee’s interest in obtaining the information outweighed any burden placed on the RNC.
But an appeals court temporarily blocked the Committee from obtaining the records later that month while the RNC challenged the subpoena.
The decision comes as the Select Committee is expected to resume its public hearings on the insurrection later this month following a break.
The Select Committee and RNC did not immediately return requests from The Hill for comment. A spokesperson for Salesforce declined to comment.

The first thing that struck me in reading the executive summary of the Jan. 6 select committee’s final report last month was footnote number 50. The text it supports in the main document is the following bald statement: “As the Committee’s hearings demonstrated, President Trump made a series of statements to White House staff and others during this time period indicating his understanding that he had lost” the 2020 election.
But wait a minute, I thought as I read this. I don’t recall from the hearings Trump’s making statements indicating that he acknowledged privately that he had lost. He had seemed to me, rather, quite delusionally confident of the fraud he was alleging. Willful blindness, definitely, but actual knowledge that he had lost? I didn’t remember that.
Yet there, in footnote 50, were four different references to transcripts that the committee claimed supported the sentence:
See, e.g., Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Transcribed Interview of General Mark A. Milley (Nov. 17, 2021), p. 121; Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Transcribed Interview of Alyssa Farah Griffin, (April 15, 2022), p. 62; Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Continued Interview of Cassidy Hutchinson, (Sep. 14, 2022), p. 113; Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Transcribed Interview of Kellyanne Conway, (November 28, 2022), pp. 79-84.
One of them, with Kellyanne Conway, was even recent—having taken place after the hearings this summer.
I couldn’t look up the transcripts at the time because neither the full report nor the underlying material was available publicly yet. But in the weeks since, the committee has released both.
The release of the full report reveals that this remarkable claim exists only in the executive summary. The committee does not allege in the report itself that Trump acknowledged his loss in repeated conversations to staff. The underlying material, meanwhile, allows us to check up on this arresting statement allegedly made by President Trump.
So did he really admit privately he had lost? The answer, as I’ll explain, is yes-ish. But the evidence isn’t all that strong, which explains why the committee did not focus on this in its hearings or in the body of the report itself. Only one of the transcripts cited clearly supports the claim. Two sort of do, but it’s a matter of interpretation. And one—at least in my view—really does not.
It is a very rare thing for a government body to show its work to the extent the Jan. 6 committee has done in its final report.
The select committee did not just release a narrative report. It also released a huge trove of material that underlies that report. That trove includes hundreds of deposition and interview transcripts and also untold numbers of documents. The notes also navigate the reader through a giant public record, consisting of court filings, newspaper articles, public statements, and, yes, a great many tweets. It’s hundreds of thousands of pages all told.
Normally, notes in an investigative report point to interviews the reader can’t access. They point to grand jury transcripts, internal memoranda of interviews, or other materials the reader cannot simply click on and search.
But the committee here has given not just its interpretation of events and not just the raw material from which it drew its judgments, but also thousands of connections between the two. Those connections are the report’s endnotes.
It’s a powerful model for future investigative bodies, one that allows anyone to check up on the committee’s interpretation of its evidence and one that offers pointers to journalists as to where to find the good stuff in the pile of material the committee has released.
Reading the notes carefully reveals a number of different themes.

HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
July 13, 2022 (Wednesday)
There are some follow-up stories today from yesterday’s public hearing of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Patrick Byrne, the former chief executive officer of Overstock, who was mentioned in the hearing yesterday as having attended the December 18 meeting in which lawyer Sidney Powell and former national security adviser Michael Flynn called for Trump to seize voting machines, will talk with the committee on Friday.
Byrne ran Overstock for twenty years before having to resign in 2019 after admitting to an affair with Maria Butina, an apparent guns rights activist from Russia who ingratiated herself with Republican politicians and who later pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to act as a Russian agent without registering with the Department of Justice. She now sits in the Russian parliament, or Duma, which critics say is a reward from the Kremlin.
Byrne has trafficked in conspiracy theories, and after the 2020 election, he became increasingly convinced that Trump was right when he claimed to have been cheated of victory.
Former White House director of strategic communications Alyssa Farah Griffin, who now works for CNN, told CNN today that when she told Trump’s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows that she was resigning after the election to move on as Trump’s term ended, Meadows said to her: “What if I could tell you that we’re actually going to be staying?”
In a different story, CNN reported that the recipient of the phone call Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) called attention to yesterday from Trump to a witness was a White House support staff member who could corroborate the testimony provided by Meadows’s aide Cassidy Hutchinson. This person didn’t usually communicate with Trump and was concerned about the call.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) continues to fight his subpoena from a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, that wants to hear from him about at least two phone calls he made to Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger to talk about the 2020 election. As of tonight, a judge has stayed the subpoena and on July 20 will hear arguments on whether to reject it.
The editorial board of the Charleston, South Carolina, Post and Courier today ran an editorial titled: “Just testify, Sen[ator] Graham.” It says Graham’s claim that the calls were about election procedures “never made sense.” Now his lawyers say that he was talking about elections to do his job as the chair of the U.S. Judiciary Committee—a top-ranking committee, by the way—which makes even less sense. The board says it doesn’t think Graham did anything illegal, but asserted that it is the duty of every U.S. citizen to “comply with a subpoena to testify.”
“We expect and deserve better from our senator,” it concluded.
( note - SERIOUSLY?  DO THEY REMEMBER WHO THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE?)
And that’s just it, isn’t it? We are hearing now, 18 months after the fact, that our president tried to overturn our democracy, forcing his own will onto unwilling voters. And, at the time, no one in the White House said anything to the public or to our law enforcement officials to stop this deadly attack.
Worse, it appears that a number of our lawmakers were complicit in the attempt to overturn our democracy. The committee has named at least ten representatives who conspired with the president, and another, Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), who gave a tour through the Capitol complex on January 5, but there have been hints that others knew something was up as well, and that some might have been helping with the scheme.
There is still the question of which senators and representatives saw a presentation of the 38-page PowerPoint titled “Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 JAN,” referred to by the committee in mid-December 2021. That anyone went to the trouble of making a 38-page PowerPoint suggests they expected a decent-sized audience.
Cassidy Hutchinson, who was a top aide to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified that House minority leader Kevin McCarthy called her, angry, when he thought Trump was going to go to the Capitol.“‘[T]he president just said he’s marching to the Capitol,” McCarthy allegedly told Hutchinson. “You told me this whole week you aren’t coming up here, why would you lie to me?’” Why had McCarthy been hearing for a week about Trump’s plans with regard to the Capitol?
On January 5, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), who was the president pro tempore of the Senate, the second highest-ranking person in the Senate after the vice president, told reporters about the next day: “Well, first of all, I will be—if the Vice President isn’t there and we don't expect him to be there, I will be presiding over the Senate.” His office immediately clarified that Grassley meant only that he would preside over counting of the Electoral Votes only if Vice President Mike Pence “had to step away during Wednesday’s proceedings,” and that “‘[e]very indication we have is that the vice president will be there.” But considering everything we know now about the plans to get Pence out of the way, Grassley’s comment continues to bother me. The silence from Republicans over what we have been hearing from the January 6th committee is deafening.
It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that they were willing to permit Trump to overturn the will of the voters—to overturn our democratic form of government—if it meant they could retain power. We ignore this willingness to destroy our democracy at our peril.
Two days ago, a spokesperson for Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán announced that the Conservative Political Action Conference has invited Orbán to give an opening address at their gathering in Dallas, Texas, next month. Trump, who has endorsed Orbán in his recent election, will also be speaking.   (c'mon Joe, don't let the State Dept give him a visa to come here!)
America’s self-styled “conservatives” have gotten increasingly close to Orbán, thanks in part to the enthusiasm of Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson for the Hungarian leader. This spring, Carlson broadcast his show from Hungary, which, with fewer than 10 million people, is about the size of Michigan. (It always strikes me as exceedingly odd that the same people who claim to champion America are using this small central European country as a model for the United States.) In April, CPAC met in Hungary, where Orbán gave a long address.
Orbán has eroded democracy in his country, replacing it with what he calls “illiberal democracy,” or “Christian democracy.” His country still holds nominal elections, but their outcome is preordained because the government controls all the media and has silenced opposition. Illiberal democracy rejects modern liberal democracy because the equality it champions means an acceptance of immigrants, LGBTQ rights, and women’s rights and an end to traditionally patriarchal society. Orbán’s model of minority rule promises a return to a white-dominated, religiously based society, and he has pushed his vision by eliminating the independent press, cracking down on political opposition, getting rid of the rule of law, and dominating the economy with a group of crony oligarchs.
When he spoke at CPAC in April, Orbán told the attendees that the right wing in Europe and the United States must fight together to “reconquer” institutions in Brussels and Washington, D.C., before the 2024 election because those “liberals” who currently control them are destroying western civilization.

Despite the passage of seven months behind the embarrassing episode of the January 6th Capitol Siege, the behind-the-scene perpetrators have yet to be caught. Despite the Democratic effort to establish a committee to investigate the deadly event by dodging the bipartisanship after an initial failure, the Republicans are burning the midnight oil to save the former president. Some Republican leaders have even started putting the blame on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the shameful event, although these accusations are not backed by any evidence or even a logical argument. In their testimony to the House Select Committee, security officials have described the violence of the pro-Trump mob and how they were threatened by their service weapons and targeted by racist abuse. While a large number of Republicans are protecting Trump, some of the more sensible of them are also opposing him to bring the responsible people to justice. Top Republicans are Still Protecting Trump, Showing his Influence on the Party Some of the Republicans blamed former President Donald Trump for the attack on the Capitol and took a stand against him and his mantra of false claims. At the same time, top Republicans remained still loyal to the party chief and supporting him in spreading lies and urging people to come out to spread violence on the streets. The House Select Committee recently conducted its first hearing, where harrowing testimony from Capitol Police Officers was recorded. House Republicans termed the hearing as a "sham" and "political charade." Many House Republicans, including the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, did not tune in to the hearing. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the names of Representative Jim Banks and Representative Jim Jordon for the Bipartisan Committee, citing their past statements and actions to impact the integrity of the Committee. This move was termed an abuse of power by the House Minority Leader. Some of the Republicans also came out to deny the idea that they are supporting Donald Trump on violence. Representative Louie Gohmert rejected the idea that lawmakers were not interested in the investigation but also believes that it is wrong to term the Capital riot as the worst attack since the Civil War. Representative Paul Gosar rejected the idea that the Select Committee was bipartisan, as it contains seven Democrats and only two Republicans. Representative Andrew Clyde compared the scenes from the January 6 attacks to a normal tourist visit. Similarly, Representative Matt Rosendale termed it as a simple security breach. [caption id="attachment_8503" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] U.S. Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell testifies during a House select committee hearing on the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill in Washington[/caption] Capitol Police Officers Crying Foul on the January 6 Episode In their harrowing testimony, the four officers of the Capitol police related that they were afraid for their lives during the attack on the Capitol. Sgt. Aquilino Gonell of the Capitol Police was defending the entrance of Capitol Hill when he was crushed by the protestors. He said that he was running out of oxygen and thought that he was going to die. Representative Liz Cheney asked Officer Gonell if Trump's claim was true, that the protestors were all "loving people," to which the officer replied that he is still haunted by their hugs and kisses. He also added that all of them said that former president Donald Trump sent them. Metropolitan Police Department Officer Michael Fanone, who suffered a heart attack and a brain injury after being beaten up by the mob, was also present at the hearing. Fanone testified that he was not only beaten but was also called a traitor. A Black police officer of the Capitol Police, Harry Dunn, said that he was repeatedly called by the N-word while protecting the Capitol.   Final Thoughts While Republicans succeeded in slashing the efforts of assembling the commission, they were clear in the demand
s, i.e., they don't want to see Trump prosecuted. Most of the Republicans are driven by fear and not loyalty when they put efforts to protect Trump. For instance, seeing Trump's influence in the Republican primary, no member can afford to go against him.  Similarly, the Trumpism ideology is persisting in the Supreme Court as well, showing the circle of influence that Trump has in American politics. As no Republican can afford to stand against white evangelical ideology and seeing Trump's influence on this group of people, men and women in red are putting their everything to protect Trump in the January 6 investigation to make their bid louder in the upcoming elections.

Jan. 6 Committee Disputes Pence’s Characterization Of Hearings: “This Testimony…Was Not ‘Partisan.’ It Was Truthful” – Updated

The House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack has issued a subpoena to compel testimony from Pat Cipollone, former-President Donald Trump's White House counsel.
Cipollone, who many former administration officials credit with helping to prevent Trump from taking legally questionable actions in the months around the 2020 presidential election, has long been considered a key witness by the Committee. He has resisted talking further with the Committee after previously sitting for a closed-door interview on April 13.
The Committee said in its subpoena letter that it has obtained evidence that Cipollone is "uniquely positioned to testify" but he has "declined to cooperate" past that interview, leaving the panel with "no choice" but to issue the subpoena. During recent public hearings, members of the panel have publicly pressured Cipollone to testify. The Committee is now taking the step to issue a subpoena in an effort to force his formal cooperation.
Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, the panel's chairman, and Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, the panel's vice chair, said that "the Select Committee's investigation has revealed evidence that Mr. Cipollone repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump's activities on January 6th and in the days that preceded."
"While the Select Committee appreciates Mr. Cipollone's earlier informal engagement with our investigation, the Committee needs to hear from him on the record, as other former White House counsels have done in other congressional investigations," the pair continued. "Any concerns Mr. Cipollone has about the institutional prerogatives of the office he previously held are clearly outweighed by the need for his testimony."
Witnesses who have testified before the panel have repeatedly mentioned Cipollone as someone who can shed light on key events inside the Trump White House leading up to, on and after January 6, 2021.
Not long after the rioters broke into the US Capitol, Cipollone rushed into then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows' office demanding a meeting with Trump, Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson told the January 6 Committee this week.
"I remember Pat saying to him something to the effect of, 'the rioters have gotten to the Capitol. We need to go down and see the President now,'" Hutchinson said in a videotaped interview.
"And Mark looked up at him and said, 'He doesn't want to do anything, Pat,'" she said.
Cipollone, Hutchinson added, emphasized to Meadows the need for action to control the situation to Meadows. She said Cipollone "very clearly said this to Mark -- something to the effect of, 'Mark, something needs to be done or people are going to die and the blood's going to be on your fucking hands. This is getting out of control. I'm going down there.'"
Meadows then handed his phones to Hutchinson and walked out of his office with Cipollone, Hutchinson told the Committee.
Cheney tweeted Wednesday before the subpoena was announced that "as we heard yesterday, WH counsel Pat Cipollone had significant concerns re. Trump's Jan 6 activities. It's time for Mr. Cipollone to testify on the record. Any concerns he has about the institutional interests of his prior office are outweighed by the need for his testimony."

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning fellow coffee and tea drinkers! Grab a cup, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.☕️

CNN: “Robbie Coltrane, the actor who brought to life the lovable gamekeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter film franchise, died on Friday, according to his agent, Scott Henderson. He was 72.”
This is so heartbreaking. Our beloved Hagrid is gone. Mr. Coletrane, of course, appeared in many other films but he will always be Hagrid to me.
RIP 💔
Sketch - Via LinkedIn: “Today is a very tough day for everyone at Sketch. In response to challenging market conditions and with a desire to keep our product-first strategy, we’ve taken the difficult decision to reduce our team by just over 80 people. This will mostly impact Operations and Marketing, who have done great work in the recent weeks and months. Our Product team remains well-equipped, with a core team continuing to drive things forward.”
This is a real bummer to see. In my mind Sketch is a prime example of a modern Mac application done right. I know many designers who use it daily. To see such a reduction in workforce makes your heart sink. All those people looking for work toward the end of the year.
On the flip side there are now many very qualified Mac and iOS developers on the market. Go find one and hire them.
Also, why in the world wouldn’t you put this on the company blog or as a standalone news announcement on your own website?
Fortune: “Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna…things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.”
William Shatner is an American Treasure. I don’t know what more say, other thank this: We must protect our planet. It’s the only place that can sustain life we’re aware of. Even if we found another planet it would be impossible to reach.

It couldn’t have happened to a better man. Now, get this jerk off the airwaves.
Yahoo! News: “The House select committee held its 10th and possibly final public hearing on Thursday, presenting new evidence stemming from its 15-month investigation into the events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.”
Well, well, well, TFG will finally get his subpoena. Of course he’ll worm his way out of it, like he always does. Here’s hoping the Justice Department gets him.
Welp… that 5-minute montage the Jan 6 committee just played leads me to the conclusion that America did have a president on January 6th. Her name was Nancy Pelosi.

CNN: “Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd delighted “Back to the Future” fans when they were reunited at the weekend, 37 years after the release of the sci-fi comedy.”
I love this film series. My favorite episode is the third and final installment. They’re all very good of course but the third one is best.
Axios: “Google has approved Donald Trump’s Twitter-like social media app Truth Social for distribution in the Google Play Store, Axios has learned.”
This company is doomed to failure. Besides, if Musk gets his hands on Twitter, which is highly likely, TFG will be allowed back on to continue his reign of terror unabated. That sucks.
Fast Company: “With 15,000 locations across the U.S., the coffee chain is betting it can convince electric vehicle owners that it’s the perfect place to charge up. (Literally!)”
Starbucks has some much bigger fish to fry with workers form unions and their attempts to bust those unions but this is an interesting idea.
I was going to question why a company like McDonalds wasn’t interested in doing something like this but Starbucks is definitely a more high end brand. It’s a place folks spend “disposable” income.
With one or two exceptions, I simply don't care about web sites that don't publish RSS feeds. RSS via the indispensible @NetNewsWire is how I stay abreast of the *vast* majority of web sites with content I care about. https://t.co/sluWtnoB3J
