“The Ghosts of Elm Street

Back when we were doing Theatre Gallery over on Commerce Street during the mid-80s, I would sometimes roll a joint and walk a couple of blocks over here to Elm Street, where there was literally nothing open except for the very first incarnation of Club Dada. It was dark and it was quiet.

Usually Dada had already closed for the evening, so I would walk over across the street to 2713, which, at the time, was an empty warehouse space with big open windows in front. The support beams looked like tree trunks, and there was an ascending staircase right in the middle of the room that led up to balcony in the back. A single light hung from the ceiling there in the middle of the building.

After a couple of hits off the joint, it wasn’t hard to envision that building filled with people, like an old ballroom, or saloon during the Depression era. There was a spirit there. You could feel it. People like Robert Johnson and Leadbelly and Bessie Smith had walked this street in the past. Local legends like Buster Smith, Alex Moore, Red Garland, and Chops Arradondo were the Legendary Revelations who helped us connect with that era.

There were at least a dozen occasions where I stared through those windows of that space and wished that we could somehow bring this building back to life. Four years later we would have that opportunity.

So much of this neighborhood is a ongoing reclamation project. Reclaiming our culture, reconnecting with our history, resurrecting our spirit through our individual chosen means of expression. So many of us felt at home here because we were born a few blocks away at Baylor Hospital. Others landed here while fleeing the suburbs.

Many, of course, were students at the Arts Magnet High School downtown. Still others were just looking for a place where they could live off the grid.

Most of us were products of punk rock culture. This new form of music had turned rock and roll upside down, and the result was that anyone could be in a band now, being a hot shot musician with mad skills was no longer a prerequisite; we were no longer required to join a cover band that played Van Halen songs to get a gig in Dallas.

Deep Ellum was a place where you co do your own thing, be your own type of artist. Blow shit up or fall flat on your face.

One of those bands was the Loco Gringos. They, too, had sprung from an early Dallas punk rock band called The Devices. Their leader was a guy with dreadlocks and overalls who had been rechristened “Pepe Lopez”. The band’s live shows were never anything less than a spectacle, with exploding bales of hay, a burning concrete yard burro, and their hearse parked in front of the venue. They had a house in East Dallas called Gringo Manor, where a 24-7-365 party raged during the entire time the band live there. It wasn’t unusual to see people jumping out of the window on a tree swing at four in the morning.

Not everybody made it out alive.

Pepe was the first one of our peer group to confront mortality. In a way it was an abrupt awakening. We weren’t going to be able to live this lifestyle forever. Jay Lavender of the Daylights discovered that, too. His bandmate Dan Connelly gave into addiction issues a couple of year after that.

Losing a friend will stay with you until you’re ready to let them go. Sometimes that can take years. I still think about Pep all the time. But since then, we’ve had to channel some that lingering grief in new directions.

Losing Carter Albrecht was particularly difficult. He was an extraordinary musician and gifted songwriter. He was a member of Sorta and Sparrows and New Bohemians, co-wrote a number of songs with Edie, and he also booked bands at a couple of different venues. The last night I ever saw Carter we were standing on the roof of her building overlooking Central Park in New York City. That was also the last time that I ever saw Mark Durham, an East Dallas New Bohemians fan who bought them vintage gear and financed their first demo tape. Mark, with whom I shared breakfast literally hundreds of times at The Gold Rush, lost his life in an auto accident in Hawaii.

Mike Scaccia of Rigor Mortis stared down the barrel every damn day of his life. The name of his band was Rigor Mortis, for god’s sake, and every single one of their songs was about death. He wasn’t afraid of whatever was about to happen next. And like his friend and crosstown rival, Darrell Abbott of Pantera, he died onstage with his boots on, both doing what they did best. A Hollywood scriptwriter could never imagine a story like that.

Like Carter Albrecht, the last record that Mike had written and recorded was released after he had passed away. Both absolutely incredible, essential albums.

I grew up with Jan Paul Davisson out in far North Dallas, and we played in garage bands together prior to his joining Shallow Reign. Besides being a great drummer, he had an excellent singing voice, and was the band’s original lead vocalist. Shallow Reign, who was featured on the "Sound of Deep Ellum" album, broke up during the mid-90s, but reunited a few years back for a couple of shows at The Kessler.

JP passed away a couple of years back, and tonight we pause to reflect on his contribution to this music community.

The first Shallow Reign album was producer by an Austin musician named Patrick Keel. His project The Pool was one of the first electronic music acts in Texas. We just found out this morning that Patrick passed away just last night.

Ronnie Dawson was a Dallas gem. His shows at Sons of Hermann Hall were legendary. He was an outstanding performer and a serious Texas Rangers fan. The man got up and ran five miles every morning, even at the age of 60. Ronnie performed all over the world, and he always made Dallas proud.

Gale Hess was an extraordinary violinist, a founding member of the avant jazz group Cafe Noir. You could usually hear her places like Club Dada or Dave’s Art and Pawn Shop. The last few years of her life were spent performing with Cirque de Soliel.

Alex Magcosi was drummer and booking agent, and was even the music editor for the Dallas Observer for a time. He passed away in New Mexico of an overdose.

Wes Berggren was the guitar player in Tripping Daisy. Tracey Sauerwein was one of the first guitar players in The Toadies. Roxy Gordon and Robert Trammell were outlaw poets who brought a ‘60s-era sensibility to their work. Dave Williams of Drowning Pool was another Dallas musician who left a permanent legacy here in the neighborhood. Five years after his passing a handful of venues here created a festival in his name: "Stage Fest”.

The next generation of Deep Ellum bands included a group called Spector 45. Their lead singer was named Frankie Campagna, and he was the son of Kettle Art Gallery owner Frank Campagna. Frank, of course, was one of the very first music promoters in the neighborhood during the mid-‘80s, and his impact has been felt here for literally three decades. 77 days after we lost Frankie, his band mate Adam Carter then took his own life, as well. I will never forget the night that motorcycles lined up and down Elm Street parked in front of Dada and the original Kettle space and revved their engines in their remembrance.

There are many essential non-musicians who have nonetheless less contributed to the cultural mosaic here, but are, unfortunately, no longer with us in the physical realm. Folks like Jim Border and Chrissie at the original Club Dada. Or a homeless African-American man named the Deep Ellum Poet, who would sell copies of his poems to folks hanging out in front of Club Clearview. Russell Smith, the entertainment writer for the Dallas Morning News, who was one of the very first local media folks to write about the music scene here. Monte Krause, one of the first managers of New Bohemians. David Lee, the drummer for The Doo and Group Six.

There was Chris Fedak, who was friends with the Buck Pets and sang in a band of his own. Skateboard freaks like Jeff Phillips and Temo Watson. Kris Dix, a feisty young woman who hung out at Gringo Manor every night. David Bindler, the drummer of Da Nu Man. Buddy Berry, the drummer of Feet First. Steven Trued, the banjo player in Killbilly. Jordan Daniel, who worked over at The Bomb Factory.

Spirits having flown.

And we still don’t know what happened to Joe Cripps.

These people are the ghosts of Elm Street.

Some day, those of us gathered here tonight will be, too.

Until then, wrap your arms around each other and hold on tight. We’ve still got this neighborhood, and we’ve still got each other.

The characters 祥隆 (canto:  “Cheung Lung”), literally “auspicious prosperity” appear in the center pane of the storefront window.  A second sign is visible inside the store, inscribed with the characters “榮生,” which, when read from right to left would be “生榮” (canto: “Saang Wing”).  In the lower left-hand corner of the photo, the vertical signage  for a business located in the basement appears below the lower left corner of the window display area.  The name 有記  (canto: “Yow Gay”) appears, followed by what appear to the characters 包料木工枱瞪 (canto: “bau liu muk gung toy duhng;” lit. “packing woodworking table”), indicating the business of a woodworker or carpenter.  The ghostly figure of a vendor can be seen in the entryway at right, presumably overseeing the small sidewalk display to the left of the store entrance.  His relationship to the operators of the interior store space is not apparent.  The left-center portion of I.W. Taber’s photo of a “Store Window in Chinatown” shows the prominent 押 character on the signage for a pawnshop.  Typical for that era, the two-part signage of the bat hanging upside down and holding a coin is suspended from underneath the overhang of the first story’s balcony.

Pawnshops of Old Chinatown

 When the Chinese pioneers began to settle in America, the appearance of pawnshops and pawnbrokers in cities and Chinatowns throughout the Pacific Coast and the western United States, became inevitable.  Pawnshops, offering loans to borrowers and secured by personal property collateral, had traced their history more than three millennia to ancient China.  

For lower income groups, pawnshops have, in the words of professor Heiko Schrader, “a high outreach, are very often financially viable and have several advantages, compared to other institutions of the micro financial sector. Clients cannot fall into long-term indebtedness, due to the fact that they have to deposit a pawn of at least the same value.  And for the pawnshop this pawn reduces the risk to provide a loan to poor people, and monitoring is not necessary.”

The photographic record of old San Francisco Chinatown’s streetscape provides numerous scenes of the southern Chinese pawn shop sign – the 押 character or symbol (canto: “aap”), literally a “mortgage” or pledge.   Additional signage showing a bat holding a coin 蝠鼠吊金錢 (lit. “bat mouse hanging money;” canto: “fūk syú diu gām chin”), signifying fortune and the benefits denoted by the coin, can be discerned.

(亨利押; canto: “Hung Lei aap;” pinyin:  “Heng Li”) or “Pervasive Profit” pawnshop was located at 830 Washington Street near the entrance to Ross Alley, can be seen suspended in the foreground  of the image.  The Hang Lee pawnshop was located at 830 Washington Street, on the northwest corner of Washington Street and Stouts (or Ross) Alley – strategically situated within easy walking distance of gambling establishments and bordellos.

Historian Jack Tchen wrote in reference to Arnold Genthe’s photo “The Sign of the Pawnshop” for the Hang Lee & Co. as follows:  

“Amid the gambling rooms where savings were quickly lost, pawnshops thrived. Pawnshops had very high counters upon which the item to be pawned would be place for inspection by an unseen shop worker, hidden behind the counter for security purposes.  Often a man visiting his favorite prostitute or singsong girl would stop by the shop and pick up a present.  [Arnold] Genthe developed his collection of jades by frequenting these stores. “

The residents of old Chinatown preferred to hold liquid assets in the form of gold or gems because of the relative ease with which they could arrange loans from pawnshops when they needed cash urgently.  The neighborhood’s pawnbrokers located their shops in strategic proximity to houses of gambling and/or prostitution, with particular concentrations of shops on Washington and Jackson Streets.

In contrast to the misfortune which befell his contemporaries, the glass negatives of photographer D.H. Wulzen survived the quake and fire of 1906.  As a result, the San Francisco Public Library provides higher quality images of Wulzen’s work online, such as his 1901 photo of the Hung Hai Art Co. at 832 Washington Street.  Its name (恒泰) and address appear clearly in the center of the photo, as well as a prominent 押 (canto:  “hung tai aap”) character emblazoned on an oversized coin topped by the usual inverted bat icon which holds the coin.

Additional confirmation of the address location on Washington Street may be found by the partially-obscured signage of its adjacent pawnshop, the Hang Lee & Co. (亨利押; canto: “hung lei aap”).  The Hang Lee shop was located below street-level at 830 on the northwest corner of Washington Street and Stouts (or Ross) Alley.

A single print (from a private collection) of the north side of Washington Street at the entrance to Ross Alley, flanked on the left by the Hung Hai Art Co. at no. 832, Hang Lee & Co. at no. 830, and, to the right of the entrance, the On Wing shop at 828 Washington Street.  The trio of businesses represented a strategic and convenient cluster of pawnshops which San Francisco’s 1885 “vice map” recorded as occupying the north-side frontage of Washington extending west from Dupont Street and across Stouts (a.k.a. Ross) Alley.

The Horn Hong Company’s business calendar-directory of 1892 shows the pawnshops located in the 800-block of Washington Street, flanking the southern entrance to Ross Alley’s gambling establishments..

The 1885 map and the various business directories for Chinatown of the 1890’s show the pawnbrokers (including the Hung Hai company’s predecessor, Fong Chong Fook Kee & Co, which had occupied the 832 Washington premises during the 1880s and early ‘90s), had strategically situated themselves adjacent to, and within easy walking distance of, the gambling establishments and bordellos on Ross Alley.

In the center of Arnold Genthe’s “Morning Market” photo of a Jackson Street block dominated by grocery stores, the glass windows of the Kung Wo pawnshop (公和押; pinyin:  “Gunghe;” canto: “Gung Wo aap;” lit. “Honorable Peace Mortgage”) can be seen in the center of the photo at 639 Jackson Street, between the grocers Tuck Wo (德和) at 635 Jackson and Yee Chong (裕昌) at 639 Jackson.  

The Chinese preferred to buy assets like gold or gems because of the relative ease with which they could arrange loans from pawnshops when they needed cash urgently.  To respond to the cash demands by the dominant population of single male workers for the recreational services provided by sex workers and gambling operations, pawnshops proliferated in old Chinatown.

According historian Jack Tchen notes, “[Chinatown’s] pawnbrokers were primarily located on Jackson and Washington Streets, near the concentration of gambling rooms,” and the city’s 1885 “vice map” shows such location, as well as near houses of prostitution.

Having operated for more than three decades, Chinatown’s pawnshops were all destroyed during the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906.  However, the pawnbrokers reestablished their shops in the rebuilt neighborhood and often on familiar streets.  

This post-1906 photo shows the T.G. Kong Co. pawnshop at the renumbered street address of 852 Washington Street, on the same northwest corner of Washington Street and Ross Alley.  

The reminiscences of longtime Chinatown resident, Lyle Jan, about the new Chinatown’s pawnshops provide insights into how business was conducted during the era between the world wars:

“There were several pawn shops in Chinatown. I remember one in particular. It was located on the corner of Waverly Place next to Washington Street. I remember this particular pawnshop because my mother often visited this shop whenever we were short of cash.

“The pawn broker, or as he was also called, the moneylender, would provide money with interest, on personal property deposited with him as security. The pawnbroker kept the personal property until the borrower paid off his loan. Chinese gold jewelry is a personal property that can be easily pawned. The moneylender knew that if the borrower did not redeem the item, the gold jewelry would be fairly easy to sell to customers who seek a bargain on gold jewelry. The unredeemed gold jewelry is also attractive to goldsmiths who can melt the gold and make new jewelry from it.

“As a bit of added interest, during the 1930s and even up to the 40s, the street windows of pawn shops in Chinatown were boarded up so that passerbys on the street could not see the person inside the shop making a transaction. Inside the shop, the borrower faced an approximate 6 foot high counter with a wrought iron framework on the top. There was an opening in the framework much like the one for a teller in a bank. The borrower would hand the item he wanted to pawn with a raised arm and give it to the moneylender seated behind the opening of the wrought iron framework. The moneylender appraises the item to be pledged as security for the loan, then quotes the loan amount plus interest available to the borrower. If the borrower agrees to the loan terms, the money and a receipt is handed down to the borrower by the money lender. At no time was there a direct face to face contact between the moneylender and the borrower. . . .

“The reason for the boarded street windows and the high counter between the moneylender and borrower was an effort to provide privacy for the borrower during the loan transaction. It was considered a loss of face for anyone to go to a pawnshop to borrow money. This privacy bit was rather comical, in that probably more than half of the Chinatown residents have had to walk into the portals of a pawn shop for cash to tie them over temporarily, especially during the Depression Years in America. I wouldn't be surprised that when a borrower walked out the doors of a pawnshop after receiving a loan, his best friend or relative might be just walking in to pawn his or her personal property.

“There was another purpose for the high counter besides privacy. In case there was an attempted robbery, the height of the high counter would act as a physical obstacle to the robber.”

“Toymaker Off Ross Alley”  Oil painting by Mian Situ.  This historically-inspired painting by Situ depicts a street artist working under the faded signage of a pawnshop in front of a building façade (blending elements from the Hung Hai Art Co.’s Washington Street store frontage and the Ross Alley streetscape) from pre-1906 Chinatown. Although purporting to depict old Chinatown, the artist’s juxtaposing children with a deteriorating pawnbroker’s sign foreshadows the decline of a business sector which had served the old bachelor society and the concurrent rise of fully-formed families in the community.  

With the dramatic growth of the Chinese population and families in Chinatown, the neighborhood’s once-ubiquitous pawnshops no longer play as prominent a role in the micro-economy of the once-segregated community.  The pawnbrokers have faded from view, their functions assumed in large part by institutional lenders and the jewelry stores.  They remain, however, an integral part of the colorful and historical past of San Francisco Chinatown’s.

Have you ever wondered why whenever you watch the Vietnamese videos or pictures, they usually appear with the sign of the Ao Dai? When you come to Vietnam, it is easy to run into the Ao Dai everywhere such as airports, hotels, restaurants, streets, hoardings, and even paintings. Ao Dai has become a traditional symbol of Vietnamese people, especially Vietnamese women that you might recognize right away at first sight. But why is Ao Dai so popular? What is the meaning of the Ao Dai?

In this blog, we will tell you the amazing story of Vietnamese Ao Dai.

1. The history of Ao Dai

The history of the Ao Dai dates back to the second half of the 18th century, to 1774. At this time, there was a civil war within Vietnam that divided the country into 2 regions: The North was ruled by the Trinh family and the South was ruled by the Nguyen family. In the south, the first Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat recognized that our costumes were very similar to those worn by the Chinese. With an ambition to be a king of an independent land, he ordered his people to change the way they dressed. As a result, that costume had to add long loose pants to make it different from the Chinese dress. That kind of dress might be known as the primary foundation of the Ao Dai.

Even though it is still hard to determine exactly the time that Ao Dai appeared, Ao Giao Lanh (Giao Lanh dress) was acknowledged to be the first version of Ao Dai. This dress was too loose and long to the ground with a belt to tie up around the belly.

According to researchers, because of lifestyle and the characteristic of working, Ao Giao Lanh had changed to Áo Tứ Thân (4-piece dress) since the 17th Century. This kind of dress usually had dark colors due to the farmers’ works. 4 pieces of the dress also represented for parents and parents-in-law.

Based on the style of Áo Tứ Thân, it was added one more piece to become a 5-piece dress, also known as Áo Ngũ Thân. This dress was tighter, used to distinguish between the rich and the poor farmers in the society, and became popular since the 20th Century.

One of the most reckless innovations is Ao Dai Lemur, which was invented based on Áo Ngũ Thân by Cat Tuong Artist in 1939. This Ao Dai had a round or a heart-shape neck with the design to hug the female’s body. Because of Vietnam’s culture, this kind of Ao Dai was only accepted by modern women at that time and disappeared in 1943.

One more combination from Áo Tứ Thân, Ao Dai Le Pho (Áo dài Lê Phổ) was created. It was different from Ao Dai Lemur with a cover-up neck and hugged the body’s curves. Ao Dai Le Pho seemed to be the original style of the present Ao Dai.

With the liberal ideas as Ao Dai Lemur, Ao Dai Tran Le Xuan (Áo dài Trần Lệ Xuân), also known as Ao Dai Madame Nhu was worn with a round-neck and body hugging style. It was loved and used widely because of its convenience. This Ao Dai’s destiny might be luckier than Ao Dai Lemur, perhaps, because of the changes in lifestyle.

Vietnam’s Ao Dai has been passing by many periods of time. Until now, Ao Dai in general comprises a two-flap dress and loose pants. It is usually made of silk or fabric. Nowadays, Ao Dai has renovated to diversify styles and versions. Along with the traditional style, Ao Dai at this time can be looser, shorter with more stuff, embroideries, more colorful but in general, it still has at least 2 pieces and comes with loose pants or skirts. Sometimes, Vietnamese women prefer to add more accessories like a cap, which gives them more elegance.

2. The significance of Ao Dai

Do you know how important Ao Dai is to Vietnamese women? The answer is: This is definitely an essential part of a woman’s entire life. Despite overcoming some difficult times in the country’s history, Ao Dai has carried its national identity and spirit and has never lost its unique vitality, since its creation. Almost unanimously, it is considered to be an outstanding work of art and the elegant beauty of the Vietnamese. These dresses come along with her during her timeline, from her childhood to her teenage years, until she grows up and gets older. It always beautifully covers up her body in each of monumental events.

Day 2: Siem Reap - Angkor (Breakfast)

08:00 am.  After having a nice breakfast at the hotel, visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the famous Bayon Temple – built by Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th, in the exact center of the city of Angkor Thom, Baphuon , Phimean Akas, Elephants and Leper King Terraces.

Afternoon visit Ta Prohm invaded by the roots of giant baniyan  then to discover Angkor Wat that is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking it is a massive three tiered pyramid crowned by five beehive-like tower rising 65 meter from ground level. Have a moat and exterior wall measuring 1300 x 1500 meters surround Angkor Wat. The temple itself is 1km square and consists of their levels surmounted by a central towel. The walls of the temple are covered inside and out with bas-reliefs and carving. Nearly 2000 distinctively rendered Apsara carving adorn the walls. Overnight at hotel in Siem Reap

Day 3: Siem Reap - Phnom Penh (Breakfast)

This morning we will transfer to sightseeing Wat Phnom located a short distance from the Royal Palace, the heart of capital, the centre of Phnom Penh that gives the city its name. Legend has it that a wealthy widow named “Yeay Penh” was walking by the Mekong River one day when she spied a Koki Tree log floating near the bank and the story was started until now become an interesting history and Royal Palace was built in 1866, during the reign of Kong Norodom. There are five points of interest inside the palace included and Silver Pagoda was formerly known as Wat Uborsoth Rotannaram because it is where the King worshiped, prayed and practiced every Buddhist Silas Day. We will drop in visiting Independent and Victoria Monument.

Afternoon visit Tuol Sleng Genocidal Museum, it is the former Tuol Sleng High School. In 1975, during the Khmer Rouge regime, the school was used as a prison and torture center, known as S-21. Thousands of Cambodians and a number of foreigners were housed and tortured there. Also have a visit at Russian Market!

Overnight in Phnom Penh

Day 4: Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City (Breakfast)

08:00 am.  Breakfast at your hotel, free until time transfer to airport for Flight to Ho Chi Minh Arrive in Ho Chi Minh – Tan Son Nhat International Airport. You will be met at the airport by your English speaking guide and transfer to your hotel in downtown Ho Chi Minh

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh.

Day 5: Ho Chi Minh City - Mekong Delta (Breakfast, Lunch)

After breakfast , 08:00 A.m we depart to Cai Be. Upon arrival at Cai Be, embark on a private boat to cruise around Cai Be Floating Market to see local people selling, buying, and exchanging goods from their boats. Visit a local garden and house to see orchards, rice crisped producing process, etc... After lunch cruising along river to see peaceful tranquil life of villagers, admire the marvelous natural setting of the Mekong Delta region.

About 3 pm, the boat will arrive at Vinh Long Market; walk around to explore Vinh Long Market before returning to Saigon

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh city.

Day 6: Saigon - Cu Chi - Tay Ninh - Ho Chi Minh City (Breakfast, Lunch)

Leaving from your hotel at around 7:30 AM, you will enjoy a drive through typical southern Vietnamese countryside to Tay Ninh province in the west of Viet Nam. You will visit the Cao Dai temple with fantastic architecture where all major faiths of the world blend together in a unique religious cocktail with an amazing noon ceremony. Up to you if it’s your taste or not.

After lunch in a local restaurant, you will have the chance to visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels, the vestiges of the American war, an underground tunnel system constructed by Vietnamese soldiers. Then  you will go back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 7: Saigon - Flight to Da Nang - Hoi An (Breakfast)

Có giả thuyết rất táo bạo, cho rằng khủng long có cơ chế trao đổi chất rất đặc biệt nên chúng có thể sống rất lâu hoặc “ngủ đông” trong thời gian cực lâu. 

Hơn nữa, khoa học đã biết loài rùa hiện nay có thể sống đến hơn 500 năm, thì có thể khủng long có khả năng sống lâu hơn rùa nhiều lần.

Còn đối với loài rắn biển khổng lồ, đáy dại dương là nơi trú ẩn an toàn nhất trong các thời kỳ biến đổi khí hậu khắc nghiệt nhất. 

Trong vụ thiên thạch rơi xuống Trái đất thời tiền sử, có đến 75% loài động vật trên cạn bị tuyệt chủng, nhưng phần lớn sự sống dưới đại dương vẫn tồn tại được nhờ lớp nước dày che chở. 

Với kích thước khổng lồ của loài rắn biển, hầu như không có loài cá săn mồi nào, dù to lớn và hung dữ nhất, lại dám bạo gan tấn công chúng, nên chúng có thể sống an toàn dưới đáy biển sâu và sinh con đẻ cái để duy trì nòi giống cho đến giờ.

Họ lập luận rằng dù khoa học đã có những bước tiến vượt bậc trong thế kỷ 21, nhưng con người chỉ mới khảo sát được 5% diện tích đáy biển toàn thế giới.

Đại dương sâu thẳm là nơi chứa những bí ẩn của thiên nhiên con người chưa biết đến, có nhiều loại động thực vật lạ mà khoa học chỉ mới biết đến sự tồn tại của chúng gần đây.

HIGHLIGHTS OF VIETNAM - 8 DAYS

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival. Welcome to Hanoi: Vietnam’s bustling colonial capital. You can find families and couples out for a leisurely stroll, musicians performing to crowds, children (and adults) cruising around on two-wheeled hoover boards or roller skates. It is lively and a great feeling! Day 2: Hanoi City Tour – Halong. Enjoy a half day to explore Vietnam’s charming capital, before driving through the countryside of the Red River Delta to the magical Halong Bay. With its wide tree-lined boulevards, French colonial architecture, peaceful lakes and ancient oriental pagodas, Hanoi is an eclectic mix that offers something for everyone. Your city tour will take you to Hanoi’s key sites: the Ho Chi Minh Complex (Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and stilt house), the nearby One Pillar Pagoda; the Temple of Literature, the Fine Arts Museum. In the afternoon, leave the bustle of the big city and drive to Halong Bay (3 to 4 hours drive).

Day 3: Halong Bay Cruise – Hanoi – Fly to Hoian. Today enjoy a day cruise on Halong Bay: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and natural wonderland composed of jutting limestone islands and sparkling turquoise waters, located in the Gulf of Tonkin. After breakfast at the hotel, drive to the Halong harbor to board your private junk cruise for a 4-hour journey. Cruise along the calm waters, between looming, limestone outcrops to visit Dau Go Cave "Grotto of the Wooden Stakes", where, in 1288, one of Vietnam’s most famous generals, Tran Hung Dao, stored hundreds of stakes before battling the invading Mongolian army. A short walk away, visit the newly discovered Thien Cung Cave ("Grotto of the Heavenly Palace"), famous for its stalagmites and stalactites. Savor a fresh seafood lunch, served on board before sailing back to Halong City, where your car will be waiting to take you to Hanoi's airport for your flight to Danang. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in Hoian. Day 4: Hoian Walking Tour – Boat trip. Immerse yourself in the tranquility and charm of this sleepy riverside town. From the 16th to 18th centuries Hoian was a thriving international port frequented by Chinese, Dutch, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Arab traders, who came to trade in the high quality silk still produced in the region. Today, Hoian is a relaxing resort popular with tourists for its eclectic architecture, skilled tailors and numerous cafes. Take a half-day walking tour through the narrow winding streets of the ancient town centre, visiting Chua Ong Pagoda, the Chinese Assembly Hall, the 200-year old Tan Ky ancestral house and the famous Japanese Bridge. After lunch, take a short boat trip to a nearby island and visit a handicraft village specializing in ceramics. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy a free evening at your leisure. Day 5: Hoian – Danang – Hue. Depart Hoian for the scenic mountainous drive to Hue. Stop at the dramatic Hai Van Pass, the high dividing line between the climate zones of North and South Vietnam, to admire the spectacular views and at the fishing village of Lang Co for a drink. Spend the afternoon on a leisurely walking tour through Vietnam’s ancient capital city, visiting the Royal Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda and the Mausoleum of King Tu Duc (a replica of the king’s palace built for the next reincarnation of the king), before exploring the Imperial Museum and Dong Ba Market.

Day 6: Hue – Fly to Saigon. Have breakfast at the hotel then drive to Phu Bai Airport of Hue to catch your flight to Vietnam’s modern metropolis: Saigon. Arrive in the late morning and enjoy an orientation tour through Ho Chi Minh City’s bustling streets en route to the hotel. Have lunch at a downtown restaurant of your choosing then set out on a guided city tour. Visit the War Remnants Museum, learn about Vietnam’s recent history at Reunification Palace, visit the nearby neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral and the City's Centre Post Office before passing by the ornate Opera Theatre and the City Hall. Finally, end up at the Ben Thanh Market, where vendors display a vast array of goods and handicrafts, appealing to every taste. Day 7: Saigon – Mekong Delta day trip. Today you travel to the Mekong River Delta on a day trip to explore the rich culture and lush fluvial landscape. After breakfast, your guide & driver will meet you at your hotel and take you to Cai Be. Start your tour with a visit to Cai Be’s colorful floating market, cruising among the local barges stuffed-full of fruits and vegetables. Visit some local workshops then enjoy a delicious lunch served at a local house in the cool shade of An Binh Island’s orchards. In the afternoon, take a traditional rowboat and venture deeper into the countryside, floating through narrow canals to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Stop at a nursery garden to discover how farmers along the delta produce their world famous fruits and vegetables. The cruise ends around 3:30 PM in Vinh Long. Your driver will meet you at the dock and take you back to Saigon.

Day 8: Saigon Departure. Today is free at your leisure for last minute shopping or sight-seeing before driving to the airport to catch your departure flight home. Bon Voyage!
