I mean I’ve seen stuff I don’t agree with about like every character, but I think that’s pretty universal in all fandoms.

And it’s not always like “oh I COMPLETELY disagree” (I mean sometimes yea but) it’s more like “hmm I kinda think I see this from a different angle” or “I think this take doesn’t take into this other element of that storyline/character” u know? Or like I’ll agree with one thing but then not another. I think the characters in Shameless are all quite morally grey so I always tend to see the good & bad parts to most characters or understand why a character does something but then I don’t necessarily take the explanation behind the action as an excuse for it etc. Like I don’t really love when people are non stop defending a character and refuse to recognize their faults/bad actions or non stop villainizing without looking at the nuances.

To be specific but also vague - I’ve seen a lot of takes on season 6 about Ian & Mickey that I’m not in full agreement with, that I might talk about some day when I have time (my last semester in grad school is kicking my ass I’ve written so many essays I feel like my brain is in a blender). And also the whole marriage cert storyline, but I acc do plan on writing a meta on that actually when I can acc sit down to do it. There are more with all characters but those are the ones I think about the most tbh.

Writing just doesn’t come naturally to me so it’s not something that I can just get out easily, I always have to sit & think and reword stuff for so long before I actually post things which often stops me from actually posting it and I’m always worried that there’s nuances that I won’t be able to get across well enough because I can’t articulate them well enough, u know? I applaud people who can put their thoughts into words so easily.

But anyway! Fandom is supposed to be something to enjoy so it’s ok if we disagree on certain things it’s not the end of the world. I see the argument used a lot that “[insert female character] isn’t flawed enough and therefore she’s not a good character/good protagonist!” And that’s just bullshit, and here’s why. 

1. This isn’t high school English class and we aren’t reading Greek tragedies. A character does not need to have a capital F “Fatal Flaw” to be a “good” character. You don’t need to be able to point at them and say, Ah, they are Hubristic and this is their Fatal Flaw and that makes them worthy of being the Protagonist. I mean, I agree that a character that’s totally perfect is not going to be wildly compelling (altho plenty of beloved and respected Victorian authors would disagree...ever heard of Charles Dickens?), but it’s okay if a character is just like, sorta stubborn. A bit vain. Kinda childish. A fatal flaw is not a pre-requisite to a successful main character, and if you disagree, I would invite you to consider Steve Rogers. And in fact, not only is a Fatal Flaw not necessary in modern fiction, but even in terms of Greek tragedies, looking for the flaw is kind of a simplistic and outdated way of analyzing a story. Even in my intro college undergrad courses, we had moved beyond that. The Fatal Flaw is a tool to get high schoolers thinking about character analysis, not a weapon for thirty year olds to beat over the heads of female protagonists.  

2. Context matters. A slow paced emotional drama is going to have different characterization than an action packed sci fi adventure. Yes, the protagonist of an psychological drama should probably have a complex flaw like, for instance, she tends to see the world in black and white because when she was 12 her brother died in an accident and the only way she could cope was to blame herself, but now as an adult she is too unforgiving and she needs to grow up, see nuance, and forgive herself. But it’s just fine if the heroine of a block buster that’s 75% explosions has the flaw of being a bit too stubborn and independent b/c in the past she could only rely on herself. I’m not saying action movies can’t have good characterization, but of necessity it is going to be less detailed and complex. So if you’re complaining that a female action hero’s characterization is too shallow, maybe you should consider that the problem here is actually that you’re in the wrong genre. 

3. Female heroes are held up to this impossible standard. If they’re “too” flawed then they’re perceived as an irredeemable obnoxious bitch. (See Cersei Lannister, the wife from Breaking Bad, etc...). If they aren’t flawed enough, they’re a boring Mary Sue who isn’t worthy of being a protagonist. The middle ground between that is so slim and so hard to write and maybe doesn’t exist, and anyway, personally I want variety in my heroines! I don’t want them all to be in that supposedly perfect middle ground because they’d all be the same. That’s bad writing too. So basically, writing a “good” female character by these standards is impossible, because she’ll either be heinous, boring, or the same as every other character. That’s not fair. 

4. On the other hand, male heroes aren’t held up to this standard. Like, at all. They’re allowed to be incredibly flawed, even downright evil, and still be loved. They can be borderline perfect and no one will say they can’t be the protagonist. They can have shallow little flaws that would be excoriated in a heroine but are great examples of character flaws in a male one. In fact, a male and female character can practically be the same person but the female character will be called boring and the male character will be adored. Literally that’s what a double standard is. 

5. Everyone has different standards of what makes a “good” protagonist anyway. You can argue till the cows go home that Rey is not a well written protagonist b/c she isn’t flawed enough, but J.J. Abrams is still diving Scrooge McDuck style into the piles of money that he made off The Force Awakens, so are you really right? In the end, it comes down to the completely random measure of how people feel about it. If a character is badly written but has hordes of adoring fans...are they really badly written? Or do they just not live up to your arbitrary standards?
