#I don't tend to reblog HP stuff

https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/746553097204203521/the-fandom-hates-women-response-to-lack-of-ff
The "fandom hates women" part of it comes from the fact that fandom as an entity just doesn't watch the kind of media that draws femslash, even if it ticks all of the boxes of things those very same people say they like. There are so many times I've watched a show that I've seen mega-popular Tumblr posts wishing existed, and then the fandom is so, so small comparatively and often in general. There have been superheroes, vampire/supernatural shows, fantasy shows, movies, books, the list goes on, that feel like they were generated out of Tumblr's desires for ideal fandom media, and everyone knows they're never going to attract anywhere near the same attention for fandom and fanworks because the common denominator just tends to be that if there isn't a full ensemble of attractive men to ship either with each other or with the women, fandom's not interested.
So it's not about prioritizing women in that sense, it's about people witnessing hypocrisy over and over again the second a show doesn't have a mostly-male ensemble. The people who are in these fandoms are frustrated that good faith attempts to get people interested are met with every excuse in the book that all eventually boils down to "I don't like watching stuff with women in it as much as I like watching stuff with men in it." And if that's how people feel about it... sometimes the conclusions are going to turn into the more uncharitable take of "fandom hates women."
--
Maybe, but whenever I see a "fandom hates women" reblog of my stuff, one or two reblogs further down the chain I get an overt TERF. I just had to go block several people today, in fact.
The first person to reblog with a comment like that is usually subtle, but their friends and friends of friends are not. The rhetoric that very quickly starts is the fandom equivalent of that "All the butches are becoming trans men! We're losing lesbians!" stuff.
Here's the thing: I've been in ten billion fandoms that were so awesome and fit fandom's supposed tastes to a T and yet no amount of promoting them could get anyone to try the canon. This goes for canons that are all men or all white men or all majority ethnicity men or whatever else.
The default state of media is to not engender a big fic fandom.
I agree that the rare outliers mostly follow certain patterns, but we extrapolate too far when we say that a lack of those patterns is why a fandom is small.
A fandom is small because that's the near-universal default.
--
Yes, a small slice of fandom consists of guilt-ridden queer fujoshi who say they want more f/f but don't make much of a move to make that happen. I tend to run into that a lot because of my own tastes and having friends who share those tastes.
Far more of fandom is people talking generally about how representation matters without saying they would personally join these fandoms if they existed.
Neither group is large enough to be the real reason some woman-heavy canon fails to take off to HP levels.
The real reason is not hypocrisy but the fact that most things don't take off like that. Most things without massive, massive audiences especially don't take off like that. And the very few things that do are flukes and don't actually predict that another similar thing will take off in the future.
--
Go to AO3's tag search. Search for all canonical fandom tags. Sort by uses and descending order.
Right now, I get 64,390 tags.
The first page, 50 tags, goes from HP with 497,845 works to the Thor movies with 59,266 works. By page 6, we're below 10 thousand works.
By the end of page 10, we're down to Labyrinth with 3,906.
Somewhere in the top 500 AO3 fandom tags (many of which are just franchise metatags for each other), we go all the way from megafandoms to medium size and down to relatively modest ones.
That's not a lot of room for a big f/f-heavy fandom given the trends in mainstream media and that mainstream media is where most really big fandoms come from.
--
I also notice that you're conflating a lack of desire to watch something that's primarily about women with a lack of desire to watch something that includes women.
There are tons of fans who want something more like The Mummy with a leading man and leading woman they love.
Granted, that's not me and that's not a lot of my fujoshi/slasher audience, but it's extraordinarily common. I know plenty of people who don't like canons that are only dudes, but since they also don't like canons that are only ladies and they don't ship f/f, this gets spun into "fandom hates women".
--
Let me be clear:
Conflating "lesbians" and "women" is a radfem position.

Yo, Welcome to my photography blog!
This is a photography project with a focus on older digital cameras sold before the mid 2000s. I've been working with these sorts of cameras since 2022, which grew from my interest in retro computers that I have had since 2020 or so. Here, I'll introduce you to my cameras, my computer rig, and try to convince you that this is a cool hobby.
General Q & A:
Whats in the name? - Kb refers to Kilobyte, all of the photos I take with these cameras only take up a little over 100 Kilobytes of digital storage per photo. FD refers to the physical media the photos are stored in, currently one camera uses floppy disks (FD), the other two use compact flash (CF) and smart media (SM) cards. unfortunately, their shortened forms do not rhyme and so they do not matter.
What can I expect from this blog? - amateur photography using old cameras, I guess. I'll say some nonsense below each photo but you're free to ignore it. I don't plan on reblogging anything here, so don't expect that. I am the star of this blog. me me me. I tend towards finding weird buildings/architecture, "liminal spaces", sunsets, and generally trying to see how well I can make a photo look like a blender render in a Kane pixels video. don't expect any consistency, though. the medium will remain the same but the vibes will absolutely fluctuate with my mood. I'll try and tag things correctly if it's off putting.
Are you a cool dude? - I tend to be! I don't want this place to be alienating for anybody but assholes who don't deserve to see the stuff I do. being a tumblr blog, I follow a lot of the standard stuff. jerks are not welcome and I'm not gonna give you the pleasure of an argument if you do turn your head round these parts.
who are you? - cis bi man. takes pictures. listens to Femtanyl. bit like Peter Parker.
My Cameras
Mavica FD-7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
released in 1997, this was the second of Sony's "Digital Mavica" line of cameras. it records photos of around 50Kbs in size to a standard 3 1/2" floppy disk. it has some standard features like a manual focus wheel, 10x optical zoom, and exposure control. I haven't found a strict source but I believe this camera is less than one megapixel. I actually have a few different Mavica cameras (a fd-71/75/83/85/87 and a cd-1000) but they aren't different from the fd-7 enough to justify being used often. I'll make note on individual posts if I use 'em at all.
Kodak DC220
Tumblr media Tumblr media
released in 1999, with a quality of exactly one megapixel the DC 220 is a weird little thing. it has custom software, connects to a computer via com ports with a transfer speed of ~11,000 bit/s. (roughly 30-60 seconds per photo in my experience) you can add custom text to your photos in the cameras built in software, and attach custom audio to each photo. it is a pain in the butt to get working, but it's quirks make it worth the frustration.
Olympus E-10
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
made in 2000 with a quality of a whopping four megapixels, the Olympus E-10 is the newest addition to my collection, and possibly the nicest camera I'll ever own. it's a fixed lens DSLR camera capable of 4x zoom, you can easily adjust the aperture and exposure on the fly, it's photos tend to be a whole 100kb in size (1/10th of a megabyte!) and to be entirely honest I have no idea how to use it. but I will eventually!
My Computer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I try to use all era-appropriate tech to transfer photos and do any edits, this is the computer I do all that processing on! its a Dell Optiplex gx1- the daddy of pretty much any computer used in public schools (Chromebooks don't count) It's got a Pentium 3 CPU clocking at 500MHz, 512mb ram, running windows ME. it has all the original Kodak DC220 software installed, and I can't really access the Kodak's photos any other way. I've also got a few other weird bits attached to it -an HP sketch pro cad tablet and an external data cartridge SCSI device. both work, but I don't really bother to use them, they just look neat.
that's about it. have a good one! thanks for reading this all, if you did.

blog intro (but cooler)
hey there :) nice to meet you i've introduced myself before but now that i've decided to change up what i'm actually posting, i decided it's probably best to redo my introduction.
first off, how you should refer to me: - i'm not real set on a name, but you can call me bat. - pronouns are weird, but you can use he/him and it/its when talking about me. they/them is okay too. please avoid using she/her. i don't really get hurt by it, but i am very disconnected from she/her/feminine pronouns & words, so if you call me a girl or use she/her pronouns, i won't even realize you're referring to me.
as for other stuff - gender and orientation and all that jazz - i'm genderfluid, transmasc, aroace, and a minor. i'm american (insert eagle noises here) and agnostic. i like writing and reading (even though i can be a bit illiterate sometimes and can't define an adjective to save my life) and enjoy writing stories. if you've spent much time looking over my more recent posts, you know that i'm a part of the harry potter fandom and spend a lot of time thinking about it. (it's my roman empire, i won't lie.)
i haven't written any longer fics yet, but i do have a few ideas, which i tend to discuss on here. some of my favorite ships & headcanons are: ships: - nuna (neville longbottom x luna lovegood) - jegulus (james potter x regulus black) - perciver (percy weasley x oliver wood) - scorbus (scorpius malfoy x albus potter) - hedric (harry potter x cedric diggory) - wolfstar (remus lupin x sirius black) - rosekiller (barty crouch jr. x evan rosier) - bartylily (barty crouch jr. x lily evans) - jily (james potter x lily evans) headcanons: - luna & harry being siblings/best friends - luna/pandora being seers or just generally knowing everything - slytherin harry &/or slytherin percy - albus potter's middle name being literally anything other than severus - werewolf draco malfoy (i may or may not be working on a fic for this) - not really a hc but i love time travel fics
other than hp, i also consume other media! (and i actually take canon into account instead of doing whatever the hell i want with it.) some of this media is: - a series of unfortunate events (both the book series and netflix show) - percy jackson & the olympians and all the other riordianverse books (specficially trials of apollo !!!) - red white & royal blue (book; my favorite one) - this was our pact (graphic novel) - project nought (graphic novel) - vengeance (2022) (my favorite movie)
i also listen to music (shocker). mostly: - ajr (my favorite band) - tate mcrae - troye sivan - death cab for cutie - tears for fears
i like talking about random obscure things, and though i'm sure my friends are just thrilled to read all the spam i give them, i also have a tumblr account, so why not spam some of my BS here? this will mostly include hp-related stuff & reblogs of posts i find interesting, but also might include the occasional oc rant, character study, or original story excerpt, because why not.
thanks for reading :)

Ask me: Fandom Edition
W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms Y - A fandom you’re in but have no ships from Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go
W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
rose hathaway (VA)
ginny weasley (hp)
feyre archeron (acotar)
bloom (winx club)
kim burgess (chicago pd)
are you sensing a theme here? lmao
X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms
i chose one not including my five fave characters so:
sevasey (chicago fire), tarlos (911 lone star), kanej (tgv)
Y - A fandom you’re in but have no ships from
ohhhhh i don't think there's any fandom i'm really *in* that i don't have ships for because i tend to post ship-related content. the closest i come is fandoms i reblog stuff from that i don't have ships for, and literally the only one i can think of is omitb lmao.
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go
thinking about how fulfilling writing fanfiction can be, even if you don't get the likes, kudos, reblogs, comments, reviews, attention you want, there is something so satisfying about being passionate about a project, so passionate that you have to create it even if it's just a scream into the void. i love it.

Hi.
wow look I'm doing a pinned post. about myself. ok.
I'm Neon (she/her). I tend to go into and out of fandoms quickly, but follow a bunch of tags so I'll reblog stuff from various fandoms. I watch an absurd amount of childrens television so that's where most of the stuff I reblog comes from.
I talk a lot about aspec/queer stuff. Exclusionists aren't welcome, I just block them. I'm not interested in holding arguments with anyone who could even be considered a transphobe, racist, misogynist, etc. if you think your beliefs will get you called that, just move along.
Tags I always use when necessary:
neon's void: for rants/rambles/random (stuff that I write for myself basically)
TW [thing]: if something is described in detail or there are pictures/quotes
CW [thing]: if something is alluded to or mentioned, or if I don't want to see it while scrolling through my dash after I reblog it (so if I add it to your post, it's probably just for me)
art: works of art that I have reblogged
fuck jkr: for all stuff about harry potter/jkr, for awareness only, I don't and will never post hp fandom things
[media name]: post about a specific piece of media
[tbd]: includes the brackets, though the others do not. Basically 'ask to tag' but so I don't get shadowbanned. also a post doesn't have to say that for you to ask me to tag something, it's there bc I feel like I'm missing tags
[form of hate]: if a post discusses, alludes to, or includes hate speech, may be in conjunction with, or separate from cw/tw tags
rant: when I post something really long, and chronically unedited. can be positive or negative, but its a mess
cursing: if i use a swear of any kind
also again please tell me if I need to tag something, I try to keep my blog safe for people, and tagging is an important way to do that
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other stuff:
I'm bad at assessing the legitimacy of donation posts (I messed it up 2/2 times), so I don't reblog them anymore, unless it's a charity that I can vet with a google search.
I tend to go on rants in the tags and those are just for me. You don't have to read them, they add nothing. But I do reorganize them so they make sense to people who aren't me in case you are interested.
I do like discussing and even (nicely) arguing things that have no stakes. If you don't like my takes on media tell me, I think those conversations are fun.
I sometimes edit/delete posts, so if you think "hey this wasn't like this before" and get confused, just ask and I'll tell you if it was me (aka youtube videos should include in the description when they change the title/thumbnail).
idk I'll probably edit this as I think of more stuff.

I'm so sorry I don't support your writing as much as I used to. I still love it. Your writing is great. I just don't like yoi. I can't help it. I'm sorry. Please keep writing what you love and what brings you joy. I'm not here to tell you to stop writing yoi. I'm only here to say I'm sorry I can't support it as much. Keep writing and keep being wonderful. Even though I can't show my support via reblogging I still support you mentally and wish you all the best
2/2 I'm sorry I really didn't mean to be rude. I really mean for you to write and reblog and post what you want and please enjoy yoi and enjoy writing! I hope my previous message wasn't rude. I really don't mean to be. I enjoy your blog and your posts and your writing and discourses. Just yoi isn't really my thing. But I don't mean to be rude to those who like it.
Um, you’re not being rude in the slightest and if you don’t like YoI then I don't blame you or anyone at all for not reading. I love Haikyuu and Yoi and yet I’m really not going to read every story because sometimes I just don’t happen to like ship, or the premise of the story.
I really should apologise to anyone who I’ve given this impression to. I’ve been very down on myself recently, and it’s affecting my writing and online experience, but I never wanted it to sound like a ‘why aren’t you reading my stuff?’ type of whinge. It really should not matter the reception I receive, and I have to take responsibility for my feelings about ‘validation’ rather than expecting something I’ve liked writing to be well received and catapult me into stardom (okay, last bit is really over-dramatic, but you get my meaning.)
Regarding YoI, I don’t actually think my stories have been particularly good. I haven’t written anything that I think comparable with Zephyrus (iwaoi, hq) or Veils (Jily, hp), for instance. I’ve liked writing most of them, but the last drabble was something I forced myself to write, and I think that came through because it was clunky. I’ve deleted because I felt it was shit, that was all. I might keep some of it and put into another story, you never know.
I guess what I’m missing at the moment is that real compulsion and joyfulness that I used to have all the time, and now only have in patches, when it comes to writing. Or that intensity, which I can’t describe as ‘joy’ but makes something important to me. (But then again, I had rl issues so writing was an escape)
I wrote a story about Ennoshita and Sorting after the ShimmyTsukki poster, and I honest to god have never laughed so much writing an hq fic. The only comparable time was a Percy Weasley fic I wrote once which took me half an hour and still makes me giggle. Other fics have affected me differently, literally making me cry in the case of one or two, even if I know how they’ll end, and they tend to be the ones that I desperately want ppl to like but are also the ones that show I’m kind of out of step as they’re not enjoyed by the set of ppl I think will like them. There’s also the point that I’ve written too much, and I should probably become like Sherlock and update something every three years *insert laughy/crying emoji here*
Uhm, anyway, that’s kind of beside the point, and I’m sorry I’m using your messages to expound on the subject but this is very cathartic.
You have nothing at all to apologise for, anon. Read what you want and what you enjoy, and don't feel you have to read something by anyone because you might have once liked something they wrote.
Thank you for messaging me. xxx

Tumblr media
I think Harry Potter and Twilight have deluded people into thinking book fanfic fandoms are big. They generally aren't.
I'm well aware of October Daye just because I usually hear about any fangirls-gone-pro-writer. On Tumblr, I tend to see more reblogs from Seanan than discussions of her books, but I'm also not looking at the relevant tags. (For that matter, I see more reblogs from Neil Gaiman about random shit than discussion of his work, and it's not for lack of discussions existing.)
The thing is, even if a book sells very well, it usually has a tiny fraction of the audience of a CW show, never mind a blockbuster movie. Most "book" fandoms really get going via an adaptation of the book. HP was an exception, but it still got a massive boost from the movies starting to come out.
And more than that, fandomy books by fandom people often do a lot of what fans want in the canon itself and have that intimidating bar of the author's own style. A lot of fic writers seem to find it easier when they're crossing mediums, whether it's because there isn't one canon voice to imitate or because they feel less like they're stepping on someone's toes.
There's an entire world of fandomy m/m book series where the leads are buddy cops working on the werewolf task force or nerdy magicians in a Lovecraftian horror town. These things even have rabid fans. But they don't always have a lot of fic.
I mean, never say never, but I know Jordan has an AO3 account. Do I really want him seeing my fic of his stuff or would I rather just go work on my own original m/m while enjoying canons that feel complete as-is?
Even Temeraire only has 1,260 works on AO3 right now.

Someone writes in a reblog of that HPMOR ask that the author is "co-writing impenetrable obscure kinky smutfic with a woman (Alicorn) as we speak," which is technically true. Yes, this man is into kink and there's nothing wrong with that (I say this as a fellow kinkster). But these fantasies - which rumors suggest cross over into real life where he MAY exploit the power imbalance between himself and his acolytes - involve harems of subservient "math pets" (don't Google that) in a hyperrational world involving cryonics, "heritage optimisation" (*cough* eugenics), and all the good stuff. The story is also called "mad investor chaos and the woman of asmodeus." Yes, "investor" is in the title. And it's well-known that Yud doesn't take the usual dim view of eugenics, so this isn't just about enjoying stuff in fic you don't condone in real life.
But whatever. People have different intellectual tastes, right? I'm not the original anon and just wanted to say my piece.
The thing is I wouldn't ever complain about that other fic if I hadn't been repeatedly amushed by it in the HP community. The fans tend not to tell you what it is and what it's for. It's not fic for fic's sake but a recruitment tool for a community (with a significant libertarian contingent) that sees some of its own members as potentially instrumental in saving the world (without the community being organized around the urgent threat of climate change, of course). They tell you it's funny but not that there's rape jokes in it and meanspirited nerd humor at the expense of lessers. Maybe it's just a whole other side of "nerd culture" than what I vibe with, so it could partly be a "me" problem, but I just wish there was more transparency when it's recced to newbies.
--
It is indeed a whole other side of nerd culture, and it's a side that I haven't bothered going near in decades.
