#I last sewed with sequins in 2011 I think?
sheliesshattered · 1 year
Text
The sequin fabric for my I-am-determined-to-make-this-happen cosplay arrived the other day, and since I am still up to my eyeballs in handsewing for my Rhaenyra dress, all I did was open the plastic bag the fabric shipped in so I could check the red color against a few other pieces of the costume. Didn’t even take it out of the bag, just unfolded it a tiny bit so I could see the front of the fabric.
And yet somehow there are already sequins all over my house.

c3x23 pretty dead
This is a nostalgia song for me but it was released in 2011 so it was modern at the time. Wow. W o w...
I only rly know anything abt anything bc of the movie dumpling when some fat girl & some punk feminist joined a beauty contest. This man looks like a pimp. Kind of is Nice yellow cumberbund thing Illinois? Being french is weird. I want to say illinwa but everyone else says illanoy She;s wearing interesting clothing. Wow short with your daddy. I mean we all need to get away from home! Hey! I love the emotional b plot, it's so good to see rick as a dad who loves his daughter & supports her instead of acting like the twelve year old who can score his teacher. Odds are, someone's dead.
It's not the baron is it? Beckett outfit update: Detective clothes. Double breasted trench coat looking thing tied with a fabric belt. Her shirt is sort of crazyquilted in blocks it has colours, more pink around the waist. It is a regular collared buttonup shirt. I think I've seen her in it before too, which is nice bc I like seeing continuity. Ryan outfit update: Green sweater, dress shirt, brown normal looking coat (still professional enough), I can't tell the pants or tie bc the lighting is weird. Update: it's a light purple-tinted shirt. He's aken off his jacket in the precinct & I can see it now. The shirt has really nice collars & it's actually stripy but so light u can hardly see it. Tie is green & patterned slightly, it's like diamonds but it's also because the grain of the weave changes I think, so the way the light reflects off of it makes some of them more shadowed than others. PERLMUTTER YESSS SP: Detective. Writer.
I should call my dad. I don't talk to him enough. Glad he said he didn't actually know the time, just vaguely a little before 11; tho he could have also checked. Baron called them both detectives lol I mean yeah fair to the victim first but at the same time she's dead she won't feel it. Yeah lol I love how they're filming BTS & it might actually be a good idea to keep em on Come again! Oh no wait we don't want that. She's so silly I love her.
In the elevator scene the button for floor 4 is lit. (for floor four lol.) Homicide is on the 4th floor.
Beckett was indeed a model but not a beauty queen.
I like the one cop getting a picture with a queen oh goodness this is insane. A bunch of gals who look exactly the same all milling about this stinky bullpen & entire precinct wow & that "winners never slouch" got my mom & me to straighten our posture & celebrate the fact that she wasn't one of those moms who gave her kids eating disorders KB, whispering: CASTLE. THEY'RE EVERYWHERE. JE: Beats the usual lowlifes & nutjobs  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) KB: I don't know if u can say that nut jobs and beauty queens are mutually exclusive JE: Yeah, but none of them connect to the murder. I checked the sequin against all their dresses RC: I bet you did. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) JE: & none of them are a match. KB: Okay, look at the footage from the dinner. Let's make sure that the dresses we checked are the ones they actually wore. JE: Hm. Watch a parade of beautiful women in evening attire? Yeah, I can do that. RC: I bet you can. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) KR: Hey. So, I've been interviewing these ladies-- RC: I bet you have. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) KR: -! About their alibis last night!
clipping
Castle she's probably way too young for you
This man is gay af. I'm glad it's about more than beauty & who can buy the fanciest dress. I would honestly expect to be makeup skills, dance skills, & sewing skills more than who can afford what or even stuff like social issues. It's kind of neat how it's a talent show as well as a beauty contest. I like this guy. He seems so stressed over his gal dying. Political he says, making those motions with his hands
Black sequins? It's like the wedding video. I thought they were black sequins! I just couldn't tell if it was black bc it was so shiny.
KR: For unwanted *looks to esposito* advances Esposito ryan is telling u to stop hitting on him, he's getting married. /j btw KR, eyes wide with excitement: Oh but it gets better! *hits espt gently* JE: *barely raises an eyebrow* (he would bite castle's head off if it was him) KR: *excitedly continues to explain the drama*
Ew I hate this bobby character. Man sat on the wrong side of the table ...Goddess train...???.?.?? Who wouldn't want to ride the bobby rocket? Everyone from what we hear! Boy can't even remember?
KB: this guy's dropped more pills than a three fingered pharmacist I can't believe castle took dad advice from him Esposito just had video running on beckett's computer? (btw i figured out how to put question marks on tumblr wéo relying on copy-paste: I use my french keyboard!)
Esposito has an ass
Someone would probably pawn the fiddle, not drop it down a drain. Tho pawned can lead back to u. Captions? He said right on, not all right. KB just sits in the desk espt was just at
Oh martha is so pretty! Far right! Look at her abs! What was your talent? The way I wore a sweater. Oh poor Alexis. I love the drama. Give her a hug! I'm so glad alexis has gram there.
Ok castle, you have been divorced twice, idk if your relationship advice is that good
Parallel. It's love! Montgomery is so sweet I love him! RM: If you stayed married long enough, you'd know it's hard to stay original after the first ten. BRUH. (that was good!) JE: Yeah, he was tweeting photos of his manhood along the way. *holds up fingers close together* (won clip)
KR with a nice pastel blue sweater, plus his usual attire. I don't like that accent. KB has a nice jeanjacket with those leather sleeves. You would disrespect a beautiful & expensive instrument like that? 25 is old? Your brain has barely finished developing! Drugs?
Ah nudes.
lmao I love the sticky notes they put over them RC: Well, just because you're smart and beautiful doesn't mean you have good judgment. KB: RC: I didn't mean me.
RC: Deadly action, that's a good title JE: *looks down & shakes head in exasperation* Why would the photographer pay HER for the photos? She would be paying THEM for the session, right? Also dang she's skinny.
Boy's gay voice is so strong that my little bro thought a woman was speaking. & then I went all trans on him & explained voices. I don't even know as much as I would like to tbh. I should take singing lessons (not necessarily gender affirming voice lessons)
RM: Beckett, you're a woman, right? KB, lowkey flustered: Sir, I have no idea what to get your wife! [...] RC: The best thing to give a woman is something she said she wanted when she didn't think you were listening. RM: What if I wasn't listening? RC: Gift certificate? no honey no
JE: *turns around to watch someone's booty* "Negative" Yay she's sending ryan to meet up with him finally, keep the boys together
I like how he doesn't remember the actual name but does remember it was smth similar to jerry. Already "night before last"? Mum is always confused about how the doorone remembers everything. Sus? Sure. Lack of smth regular? Maybe. Smth normal? not rly.
Keieiper XD Every guy is a creep in the eyes of the parent. Poor becket,, look at her nearly pulling her hair out. KB: It was my own private Vietnam. Our place smelled of hairspray, perfume, and cigarettes. I'm surprised that we didn't spontaneously combust.
It's ash!!! He really does love her to go see her dad at work to win her back Long distance relationships are better than they used to be. It used to be that your man goes off to make a fortune so he can marry you but then gets attacked by pirates & becomes a pirate himself & then steals you back from kidnappers, or you go away for ten months & then come back & your wife has a kid altho I might be mixing up the birth of hercules/heracles with ulyssix/odysseus & his son who I thought might be nine years old when the man was gone for ten idk it's smth like that anyways it's better to have long distance relationships these days since back then you could send letters that take ages to get to that war zone or whatever.
Ryan's the one who said "yo" this time Ew an obsessive porn wall Ew he's hanged right behind it. they didn't smell it
Peri mortem. During death, not before, not after. Before amber? Yes Before! Now can you please move? You're in my light! (Perlmutter also has an actor who needs to know where to stand to get his light) (not clipping)
By today's standards are downright tasteful! Those convenient sticky notes Girl he's on the phone, you're asking him to do work while he's on the phone? Poor Jenny. "Sorry Babey."
RC: You know I-- I hate to interfere… AC: Since when? RC: Point taken.
Nice little magnifying glass! He got it bc beckett doesn't have one Coffee <3
Y'all agreed & knew he was a cheater? Wow this is dramatic. WOAH A VASE! Who do I need to be ashamed in front of? "take care of it"???
BOBBY STARK? Course he doesn't remember.
Strawberry oil XD ok rick
Why woulld he assume one of them was lying? Didn't they all say she was great?
He was so upset! No! (Ryan & espt had better be there) Ah yes they are. Where u going? Huh?
Good work you two! *clearing throats loudly* (Ryan's square shirt love it.) Good work you folks. Rick really is a charmer isn't he? I love it when characters are in love Dancing "That gift this morning"? sounds like sex Wait, you're serious, boss? Smile, please. That's an order. (They all smile and chuckle.) RM: Hey, you kids take care, alright? (He really is the dad of the precinct) KR: What the hell did you say to him? RC: Nothing! No, I just told him to listen to what his wife wanted. JE: Damn, Castle. KB: Castle, let me let you in on a little secret. Captain Montgomery retires all the time, just give it a week or two. He's like the Brett Favre of the NYPD. Trust me. He's not going anywhere. It's just so cute, I KNOW they are just teasing him & making him think they were mad at him> & then espt still makes that move at him lol. Making him run out of the room sideways.
She will keep showing up See you tomorrow SDFHAKSJDFHDSFD
She is such a lil genius just like my bb bro. I took an extra year of highschool lol.
So yeah good episode.

Top 15 worst gowns worn by the Duchess of Cambridge
Here we go! Time to be controversial (my best gowns are more controversial but that doesn’t matter) @claireofluxembourg @lizisbackbackagain @anna8910 @queensonjas
15. Beulah London Juliet Dress (2016)
Tumblr media
I actually quite like this dress but it’s just not quite there. I think it’s the weird part under the boobs and above the waist that makes it bad? Maybe it’s the neckline? Maybe it’s just the worst version of this type of dress she has.
14. Amanda Wakeley Gown (2011)
Tumblr media
I want to like it but the weird boob harness makes it really hard. The fact this was a last minute stand in makes me want to know what this dress was for. Did Kate already have it? Was it for the military awards and brought forward? Did she buy this for personal use? Also, the skirt goes into strange pleats at the bottom and I’m not a fan.
13. Sequinned Jenny Packham Gown (2013)
Tumblr media
I like the sparkles. A lot. Kate should do gold and sparkles more often. However, this dress comes with those little underarm patches, which ruins it. It’s like Jenny Packham was making the dress and ran out of time to finish it off.
12.  Erdem Stephanie Gown in Winterbourne Print (2018)
Tumblr media
It’s a curtain. It’s not the worst curtain she’s ever worn but it’s bad. I oddly like the colour but not with the arm ruffles and the ruffle at the bottom and the neck ruffles and the ruffle between the boobs. There’s a ribbon belt which I’ve never noticed before but makes the dress even worse. Imagine what we could have had here. An Ida Sjöstedt dress. Imagine.
11. Alexander McQueen Hibiscus-motif Gown (2012/2020)
Tumblr media
Remember when I was obsessed with this back in 2012? When I saw it at the BAFTAs, little 15/6 year old Grace was LIVING. Looking with fresh eyes, however, really put a dampner on that. It’s culturally appropriative. It has another strange boob harness. It has another strange piping thing down the middle of the skirt. I will accept that the sleeves are better this time.
10. Alexander McQueen Velvet Gown (2011)
Tumblr media
I’m going to be exiled for this choice. I just don’t like velvet that much. I hate the neckline. I don’t like the jewel choice. If you look from the waist down, it looks like Kate’s hiding behind a curtain. I just don’t get the love for this monstrosity.
9. Alexander McQueen Lace Gown (2019)
Tumblr media
It’s daring. It’s sort of different. It didn’t work. She looks naked. It looks like she found some lace and just threw it on over her naked body. The underskirt blends in with her skin too much and makes the lace stand out. The fact the lace comes together in the middle keeps dragging my attention back to areas I should not be looking at on a lady. As soon as I saw it, I just knew what people would say.
8. Jenny Packham Gown (2014)
Tumblr media
I can see why people like it. But I don’t. It’s like Jenny Packham had made a dress and Kate bought it and then someone told her it was too short so they had to sew some more fabris on it. It’s like a wrap dress with another dress underneath it. I also always forget this dress exists.
7. Temperley London Black Lace Gown (2012/2013)
Tumblr media
This is the boring version of the McQueen dress from above. She also wore this more than once really close together and I want to see new dresses please and thanks KMiddy. This is the dress with the infamous “crotch arrow” and I can’t see it but I can’t unhear it.
6. Jenny Packham Beaded Gown (2017)
Tumblr media
Kate has like 8 versions of the gown and yet this is the worst one and it’s the one she wore last. Rewear a good one next time. It’s shapeless and dull and there are too many beads but the beads aren’t good. I hate the sleeves. I have the translucent overlay that is longer than the blue slip.
5. Jenny Packham Green Lace Gown (2017)
Tumblr media
I have never been more disappointed when she walked out in this dress. It was lace. Again. It was green, which should have been good but nope. If she hadn’t worn a lace dress every other day since her wedding day, this would have been a good dress, but it has to cope under the weight of all my expectations and it couldn’t carry them.
4. Erdem Christina Blue Velvet Bell Sleeve Dress (2018)
Tumblr media
This is worse than the yellow Erdem. It’s so much worse. I hate velvet and this dress is velvet dialled up to the max. It’s shiny and I just know it would feel awful to touch. Why is there a blue velvet ruffle at the base? Why are there bell sleeves? Bell sleeves and ruffles is not a good mix. Kate went to Sweden and wore ugly gowns. Nothing redeems this dress.
3. Green Jenny Packham Gown (2018)
Tumblr media
Kate has almost this exact same dress in inky blue. She could have worn that. She’d already worn it while pregnant. But no, she thought, let’s buy that dress in a bad shade of green. This was also the infamous “wear black” year and I might have hated the theme but she literally wore black in 2017. She has an inky blue version of this dress. Inky blue is closer to black than green is. If she was going to wear green, she should have stuck to her guns and not including the black belt. Is she about to give us a karate demonstration? No one knows.
2. Blue Beaded Jenny Packham “Saree” Dress (2016/2020)
Tumblr media
This dress is ugly and also culturally appropriative. I wondered if the appropriation was the reason I didn’t like it but it didn’t get any better the second time she wore it. Also, the earrings she wore with this dress are the ugliest things I’ve ever seen and need to be destroyed, immediately.
1. Hideous Prom-Dress Inspired Alexander McQueen Gown (2018)
Tumblr media
Iconic for being bad is still iconic, right? It looks like it needs ironing and that’s coming from someone who is anti-ironing. The bodice looks like it’s been made out of tissue paper and then the rest of the top part looks like when someone’s painting one of those awful textured ceilings. The dropped waist skirt is the worst thing I’ve ever scene. The fact the dropped waist congregates in a point. This was the first time we saw her order and it was ruined by the dress.

Meet the Vancouver-based Designer Crafting Looks for Canada’s Drag Race Contestant Ilona Verley
For those who’ve been following Canada’s Drag Race and wonder who’s behind the dramatic look worn by contestant Ilona Verley in the show’s promo images, Evan Clayton is your name to know. The Vancouver-based creative–who graduated from the city’s Blanche Macdonald Centre and launched his label in 2013–has dressed more of the country’s other beloved queens including Tynomi Banks and Juice Boxx, and his designs have appeared on other Drag Race darlings like Naomi Smalls, and performers like Jessie Reyez and Kali Uchis. FASHION caught up with Clayton to talk about his work with the drag community, the philosophy behind his eponymous brand, and where he finds inspiration.
Tell me about your path to becoming a designer; was it something you always dreamed of doing?
I was definitely a very creative child and had a love for fashion. I read many magazines, and started thinking about having a career in fashion when I was maybe 13 or 14. But I was torn because all the way through high school, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get into fashion or into science and go to school for marine biology. When it came time to decide what path to take, I thought to myself, Blanche is my dream school, and if I don’t get in, I’ll go to school for marine biology. I graduated from Blanche’s fashion design program in 2011 and started my line in 2013; I’ve been showing consistently since then, with this season being my 15th collection.

It’s interesting that you say you were into science–a lot of designers I speak to tell me they were studying or working in that field before getting into fashion. How do those two worlds intersect?
I think there is a lot of science and math in what I do. When I’m not sewing, I’m drafting, and drafting is all math. And I find myself very inspired by nature. Maybe it’s cliché to say, but this idea of ‘nature is the greatest designer’–it’s true!
Aside from nature, tell me about your other influences. How did you start working with the drag community, and how does that world of design factor into your creative process and other work?
I’ve always been a very theatrical person; all through high school I was in drama. I remember the very first time I saw drag–it was before Drag Race was the cultural phenomenon it is today. I was channel surfing and saw the season one episode when Ongina came out as HIV positive. That was the first time I’d ever seen a queer person represented on TV when they weren’t the butt end of a joke, or it wasn’t the notion of having a tragic storyline just for the sake of having one. Seeing that, and seeing these people who media had shown me all my life as a joke as being an actual creative force and having talent and heart and beauty, that started to foster my love for drag.
Moving to Vancouver, my social life was the drag scene. All my closest friends are drag artists, or work with them. I’ve been putting drag queens in my runway shows since 2014; and it’s snowballed from there, from being a fun thing in my shows to making a career in making costumes for drag artists both locally and internally. It keeps building, and now that Drag Race has come to Canada, it’s going to keep expanding. The Canadian drag community is so small, especially compared to the States. I knew half of the cast on Canada’s Drag Race!
In terms of designing for drag artists for a stage show versus television or runway, how are those processes different?
It’s quite different, and it depends on the individual artist as well. Something I make for the runway isn’t going to necessarily work for stage–there are a lot technical aspects to making clothes for drag. There are a lot of elements to be mindful of: nylons; are they going to be wearing a breastplate?; are they going to be wearing a corset or padding?; what wig are they wearing? If they’re not wearing a human hair wig, they probably can’t wear sequins. There’s a lot of things to juggle when you’re designing stage costumes, whereas on the runway, if they’re just going to be walking for 40 seconds and then wearing it backstage, it’s more chill.

❄💎 ICE COLD HEART 💎❄ . @ilonaverley in a custom cartridge pleated brocade gown, paired with a thermoplastic armored bust and swordtip glove for @canadasdragrace. . THE CAT IS OUT OF THE BAG! Ilona is a contestant on the inaugural season of Drag Race Canada! I've been lucky enough to work with this talented queen on a few looks, but to have her trust me with the first look the world gets to see her in is a true honor, and one I can't thank her enough for. I wanted to portray her in powder blue, her signature color, but in a tough as nails armored look to match her badass persona. Regal, yet stern. She has a fucking message, and I can't WAIT to watch her share it with the world! . 📷: @mattbarnesphoto 🔪: @littlejohnnyr 💎: @ampedaccessories . . . . #fashion #drag #dragqueen #ilona #ilonaverley #dragrace #dragracecanada #canadasdragrace #brocade #armor #armour #sword #glove

Is there an outfit from Drag Race Canada that you’re particularly proud of, perhaps because it presented a conceptual challenge?
There are two in particular that I know made it on to the show. The first is Ilona’s promo look, the powder blue armour set; that wasn’t a conceptual challenge because I’d based it on some looks I’d done from a few seasons past, but it was a challenge in terms of construction because we only had three days to complete it.
Another piece I’m proud of is on next week’s episode–it’s a look that we did based on a runway look that I did a few years ago; I feel that’s authentically me and it’s a good representation of who I am as a designer.
Let’s talk about style and self-expression. How do all the influences you have get distilled into your creations?
At the very core of the ethos of the brand, and also me as a person, is honesty. If a design doesn’t feel right for me and for the performer, I’m not going to do it. I’ll find a way to make it right. And that extends to my runway shows–I’m not trying to paint a delusion, and I’m not trying to create a fictional reality–the pieces I make are a very honest representation of who I am as a person and what my morals and ethics are. And I think that especially in drag, and in Vancouver drag, that’s a very visual thing. You look at the drag troupe, The Darlings; I just dressed them for a collaboration they did with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. I had to sit down and say, “What story are you trying to tell and how can my voice add to it?” If it doesn’t add anything, then why are you including my voice?

In terms of your approach as a designer, are you interested in the traditional fashion model of doing runway shows and several seasons of collections a year? Or are you happy doing your own thing?
My business has always been a bit of an odd duck; I’ve never really fit into the wholesale market because of budget. I was doing so much custom work, that was really the driving monetary force behind my brand. I was doing runway shows because I love them, not because I felt like I had to.
My runway shows are a kind of therapy for me; you can look at a specific show and you can see where my mindset was at the time I was creating that collection. I did a collection a few years ago where I wanted to focus on ready-to-wear for wholesale, and then have a few dramatic pieces at the end. What I learned from that show was that nobody cared about the wholesale pieces–only the fun pieces. That was kind of the nail in the coffin for me trying to fit into the fashion system.
I actually had a runway show planned that was going to happen last week but it obviously didn’t because of COVID; we’d been planning it since November, and then I had to pull the plug on it. I thought, do I show this in another format? Do I do a video? Do I just do a photoshoot? I’m just going to hold on to it until I can release it in a way I see fit, because I have a whole experience planned for it that extends a bit past the runway. I’ll be very patient about it until we can gather in numbers greater than 50.
You’ve mentioned how meaningful seeing Drag Race for the first time, and now being part of the show, was for you. What are you hopeful for coming out of 2020 in terms of inclusion, representation, and other similar issues that have really been brought to the forefront recently?
I’m very hopeful to see more inclusion, not just on Drag Race but in media in general. It’s so amazing that Ilona was cast on Canada’s Drag Race as an Indigenous trans two-spirit person who’s very open about her status as exactly that; and she’s not afraid of sharing the struggles and letting people know what is happening in those communities. I think [the show] has done a good job of representing these stories. I remember watching Anastarzia [Anaquway]’s story about her upbringing, and coming to Canada and seeking asylum, and becoming the star she is today. That’s really inspiring and something I’d love to see continued not just in future seasons of Drag Race Canada–I think in Canadian media, we’ve always been a bit ahead of the curve in terms of showing diverse communities–but I’d love to see it extend to the American version as well; that’s the big money-maker, and I don’t think putting Gia Gunn in a season of All-Stars is going to quench the fire of Ru Paul saying he’d never cast a trans person on Drag Race. It’s not the same thing as casting an undiscovered trans talent that deserves to be on the show.
