I'd love to hear your thoughts on the main characters in the Gilded Age!

Marian

I,,, like her? she's sweet, and she's definitely going to stir things up. but i feel like we already have one main character (Bertha) that's just arrived and will cause the same type of stir as Marian. this show emphasizes the divide between the old and the new, and Marian is most certainly part of the old clan. it would have been more powerful to for Marian to have been raised as a member of the old elite, someone who can navigate the social scene perfectly while also causing a stir. sort of like a subtle Sybil Crawley. it would also be a great foil to Bertha and further highlight the grandeur of the new families vs the old ones.

Peggy

god i love Peggy. she's definitely got a rich background, and I really want to know why she needs a lawyer. Denée Benton plays her beautifully, giving her many layers. i honestly can't wait to see what happens with her.

Aunt Agnes

would it be unfair to compare her with Violet Crawley? a little. is she all I can think of when she speaks? yes. i think she’s a brilliant character, but I’d like to see a more human side to her. 

Aunt Ada

I feel like she's compensating for something every time she's on the screen. something definitely happened to her that no one is allowed to speak about, and I feel like once it's revealed it will give her a lot more depth.

Oscar

oh my god Oscar just leave Gladys alone she doesn’t want to marry you. actually I think the problem is that she would totally marry him, but she doesn’t know the full arrangements which is super unfair to her. also John Adams Jr (x3) deserves so much better than this gold-digger. really I’m not liking Oscar one bit. also the whole way he treated Marian was awful. he went from thinking she was so awful old lady to liking her because she was pretty? really the entire way he thinks of women is absurd tbh. 

George Russell

oh god George. I love that he loves his wife. I do not want a lady’s maid/George storyline because that’s a little too much like Robert/Ellen and we don’t talk about that. that being said his ruthlessness is a brand I can appreciate. buying all the shares of his own company was a genius move. 

Bertha Russell

here’s a brand of ruthlessness I cannot appreciate. I almost sort of liked Bertha until she said her “she’s a child until I say she’s not” line about Gladys (I know that’s not exactly what she said but still). that being said I think she’s totally in the right to not forgive those women. she offered her ballroom, and they totally snubbed her. 

Larry Russell

Larry is an angel who must be protected at all costs. he saved Pumpkin without a thought. he adores his sister, and wants the best for her. he could easily push her to be with Oscar because he’s his friend but he doesn’t. he’s a little naïve, but he sees the best in people, and wants the best for them. he’s so adorable and most certainly my favorite character. 

Gladys Russell

nothing to say about her. she’s as naïve as her brother though, and I feel like that’s going to get her into some trouble. she definitely sees Marian as some type of sister figure, and I’d love for her to meet Peggy. 

Tom Raikes

he’s up to something.

Bridget & Jack

I know they’re not main characters per say, but their moving picture excursion reminded me of Jimmy and Ivy from DA and I really don’t want them to take that path. clearly, something has caused Bridget to be sacred of physical contact and I really, really hope that Jack realizes, and offers her nothing but friendship, willing to be her confidant when she’s ready. they could have an amazing healthy friendship I’m begging that Fellowes doesn’t ruin it.
