one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.

which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes

and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts

The Last Unicorn is a wonderful movie, loved by many and considered to be sort of a masterpiece by some, and the animation is still pretty charming but I shall be honest, that unicorn looks a lot goofier than I remembered it to. It looks really dumb. Which is surprising because the horses look nice, it's just the unicorn.

Maybe whoever made that design was a unicorn hater. I think she's just too slick. I don't know. In her first appearance in specific, she looks like a skin crawler. Maybe her eyes are too big? I think her eyes are uncannily big.

And when she makes horse sounds it just seems like it's the voice actress screaming. It goes "hIiIiIiI" it sounds super stupid. Maybe that's because the audio is now over 40 years old. The voice actress was amazing though, don't get me wrong. I read a review from a critic somewhere who said actors usually don't do that good at voice acting because they're used to having more than just audio to convey emotions, and I agree, but she nailed it.

I also adore the fact that the songs in the movie have approximately no subtlety whatsoever. They mansplain everything that's happening in real time, it's really silly. Kids' movies don't do that anymore, not to that extent. Or the ones I watched didn't. I can't figure out if that's good or bad, for children that is.

Oh and in the opening credits there's this moment where the unicorn rears so she stands, then waits a second, takes two steps forward, and then stands still again. I know horses do that in real life but it just looked like they messed up because she wasn't centered so they had her scoot further to the right it's very funny.

I have no right to be criticizing literally any of this, though. Not only do I know nothing about what went into making it, but also this movie is straight up older than my mother.

But the tree with 3D bazongas wasn't necessary.

And that butterfly is much more infuriating than I remembered it to be. Maybe because I actually understand English now.

The movie is old enough that they use the word "gay" with its other meaning and I love it so much. I get to make stupid jokes about it non stop. In my head and to myself because I watched it alone. But.

Schmendrick the Magician my boy by the way. He's so cool and awesomesauce. He faints like a little leaf falling on the ground. Bro must weight 2g. And the prince is funny too. "Words are always getting in my way, anyway I love you" so fucking nonchalant, okay dude. "I'm not a man of poetry, music isn't one with me" yeah we noticed.

Also am I tripping or is the red bull explosion shaped like a rose?
