Germany must make a decision by around mid-year on Chinese involvement in its 5G networks.

In the battle of narratives, Germany is key, according to Dr Janka Oertel, director of the Asia programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin.

Besides being Europe's dominant economy, its trade ties to China dwarf those of its neighbours: German exports to China in 2019 were higher than Britain, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands combined.

It will assume the EU's rotating presidency on July 1, giving it the chance to turn the debate in Europe.

China could still win back favour and help secure a greater global role by acceding to demands to open up its markets and introduce a more level playing field for international business, said Dr Oertel.

"That would be something that the Europeans would very much appreciate," she said.

All the same, she added: "I don't think it's very likely."

Worldwide check-ins from Civic Initiative alumni during the COVID-19 epidemic (part 3 with continuing updates)

Mike Hannahan, director of the UMass Civic Initiative, asked alumni last week about how the COVID-19 pandemic was affecting them and what they were doing to take care of themselves during this unprecedented time across the world. Here are there responses, categorized by country.

The responses are to two questions: How has the coronavirus changed your life? How are you taking care of yourself?

Iraq

Greetings from Baghdad. I am an Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP) alumnus from 2015 and currently working as a medical doctor in the emergency room of one of Baghdad biggest hospitals, a hospital that provides (along with another smaller hospitals) medical care for approximately 5 million people! The hospital was so crowded before corona as usual, and when the first corona case was reported in Iraq, we were in alarm and we knew that things are going to change! Because we know our government and its limited resources.

We were waiting the first case to be reported in our hospital carefully, looking at any patient in the ER and expecting them to be a corona patient, but since we are in a war against that tiny evil, it came to us from where we didn’t expect! And old man in the cardiac care unit whom denied any travel history and was admitted 6 days ago started to deteriorate, despite of the proper management and care, unfortunately we lost him the day after! Then, his relatives confessed his being at Iran a couple weeks prior to admission and that explained everything!

We sent samples for PCR and the results came positive the day after! We were shocked! Because 21 doctors 6 nurses and patients nearby him were in direct contact with that man! Half of the hospital staff went to quarantine! Luckily, I wasn’t among them but continued working extra time to keep the hospital serving the people in need. Days after that, most of the cases in the ER were respiratory cases and many of them were corona positive! Among them, a woman came in late stage of the disease and died at the same day she was admitted, her body is still in the hospital and today is her 15 days without been buried! She did not have burial or sorrow ceremonies like any other, and this was inhumane! 

Those days in the war against corona virus revealed another enemy that is more aggressive than the Corona itself! The illiteracy! People didn’t commit to quarantine! Suspected cases are leaving the isolation units! And finally, a highly suspected woman whom her husband refused to isolate her and threatened me with punishment if I put her in isolation! And the next day revealed that she was positive and the police put all the family in the isolation units.

And here i am, writing this in my 25 days at hospital, standing against corona that will be vanished in months, and illiteracy which will last longer. 

Egypt

So we can all see that coronavirus has affected a lot of people's lives. From my point of view it came to teach us, to let us more aware about what we were having and what we were doing but now we are all at our houses trying to stay safe.

My life has stopped. I was working then the company changed the policy to work from home but now we are all in an open vacation not working, not getting our salaries, not doing anything. At first in the organization I was working in, we were trying to spread awareness through making online campaigns and live sessions but even now no one is working.

Also I was planning to visit the US this summer. I wanted to check on with the people that gave me the best experience during my previous experience in SUSI program. I wanted to come in June then to spend the 4th of July. But now I don't know if I will be able to do that or not. Besides that, I was going on an exchange program to Portugal but the airports stopped working 12 days before.

Now I'm staying at home, trying to find online jobs but because of the poor internet connection it is not easy nowadays. I'm learning Spanish now, and trying to learn Tango. What I really want to focus on now is to discover and explore myself more. In addition to try different and new things.

So now, I'm always staying at my home to be safe. I just go out if something is urgent, and I go out using gloves, masks, and alcohol. And after coming back before entering the house I take off my shoes outside, then go to wash my hands and use the alcohol again, then putting all my clothes in the washing machine separately.

Argentina

Strict quarantine since March 20, no school for my daughter since March 16th. We are both confined. I'm working from home, but fearing I may lose my job if this situation continues. I have just left my apartment twice to buy some groceries at local shops around the corner. I have not seen my family or friends who live in the same city, since March 15th, the day before the first regulations were started by the federal government. 

How are you taking care of yourself? Following the rules, practicing social distance. 

Pakistan 

It's a hard time for health workers. With increasing numbers of patients, not only their care but self-prevention has become a challenge. With all this, it's been a reminder to rejoice little things in life and not take normal daily routine for granted after the fight against COVID-19 is over. This has made me more thoughtful and grateful in life. I could really use some fresh air and a long walk when all this is over soon, hopefully. And a face-to-face chit chat over a coffee with my friends. 

I'm following the prevention guidelines thoroughly and making sure I will never be the reason somebody gets it. That's the responsibility falling on all of us and we must play our part.

United States (from a member of the Civic Initiative staff)

The coronavirus has completely changed all of my plans for the spring of 2020. First and foremost, I thought I would be spending this week recovering from the jet lag of a two week trip to Islamabad. I also envisioned myself having plenty of time in the warm weather to visit all of my favorite spots in the Pioneer Valley before I move away from Amherst for the foreseeable future. However, as my mom keeps reminding me, "Change the way you look at the things, and the things you look at change." Though life is not going according to plan, I am super thankful to have this time with my family. My brother, sister, and I are all quite close to moving away from our childhood home permanently, and it has been years since we all lived together under the same roof! 

With the extra time in my schedule, I am trying to solidify some healthy habits in my life. Aside from online school, I aim to do something physical and something creative every day. Some days I take my dogs for a walk and then read a book. Other days, I go for a run and come home to work on my doodling/sketching skills. It is cool to be able to spend my time on activities that normally fall to the bottom of my list of priorities.  

New Zealand

We have all been in a total national ‘lockdown’ for a week. Only people working in essential services are allowed to move around, the rest of us are confined to home except to go shopping, the Dr. or for neighbourhood walks. People over 70 are not even allowed to go to the grocery store. My mum and mother-in-law are both stuck at home, on their own. Police are out and about questioning people’s movement, which is very weird, but currently accepted by the population as necessary. The rate of infection is still going up every day (we are at 650 today) and they expect the numbers to keep going up for another 7-10 days. All travel in and out of the country has been suspended and our national airline is now running 5% of its previous scheduled flights. New Zealand’s economy is very heavily dependent on tourism, foreign students (especially from China and India) and dairy exports. The first two have completely stopped, and look to be suspended for a year or more, so the NZ economy is going to be very badly hit, with huge redundancies. The government (we have a left-wing one at the moment) has provided income assistance for everyone made unemployed by the virus and mortgage support for people who would otherwise lose their homes. These measures will soften the blow but not stop hardship.

Like everyone else our family (my husband, 17-year old son and me) is confined to home and will be for another 3 weeks, although word is that the government is thinking of extending it for another 2 weeks after that. I’m not sure what will happen when we all come out again. Maybe the government will stagger things across the country so that the health services can cope. All schools and universities are shut so we are all learning how to teach and learn online. 

Watching how the virus is affecting Italy, Spain, the US, the UK is shocking, and these countries have huge health care resources. Wishing all friends and other alumni and their communities all best wishes for getting through this pandemic!

Pakistan

The government imposed a partial lock down and authorities have restricted non-essential travel. I have not stepped out of the home for the last 6 days but I have set timetable for myself, which includes official work from home and other co-curricular activities such as cutting grass in lawn and playing badminton with my family members. It’s pretty hard to work from home in this challenging time as there's no way to avoid all interruptions from your family and visitors. Many in our area are taking the COVID-19 lightly and are not following the government guidelines. For them, it’s business as usual. Sometimes your family will interrupt you—like if your kid just got hurt. Sometimes, due to lack of human interaction I feel loneliness and I miss the gathering of colleagues and friends but we hope we will soon overcome this crisis and will be able to start our routine life.

I’m following the government guidelines of social distancing, staying at home and health & hygiene. I have also started healthy diet by taking more fluids to boost my immune and to be ready to face the COVID-19.

Pakistan

I have five daughters and son, all are adult and students. All public and private schools are closed since Feb. 2020. My children are staying in home, which is the first time and long time staying at same time in the home. These months are usually yearly examination time. All children are preparing for examinations, but the government announced all schools and universities will be remain closed until May 2020. Now children are busy in cooking, sewing, stitching, online learning. and video films with whole family.

I am also dependent on my salary. We have no money to spend on future food expenses. Today, the government is announcing that conditions are going be worse day by day.

As a social worker, my community members, and daily wage earners which are living near to me are calling me and want finances and food for their families. I am telling them that the government is doing some planning for them. I have also given technical support to poor people to register for an online portal because 70% of daily wage earners are uneducated and they have no facility of internet. So, I am trying my best with their registration with government.

The spread of pandemic COVID-19 has made sure that we won’t be seeing the world like we were used to before. Nothing is going to be same as before. We will encounter new challenges, down-sizing, recession of financial positions.

But, every recession is a beginning of a new rise. We may learn a life worth-living with a totally changed perspective, vision, re-shuffling of priorities, new ways of living, interacting and working. In order to contribute towards social responsibility, social distancing is the least you can do for yourself and for the others! Keep distance! Brexit 2020: Everything you need to know about Boris Johnson's trade deal nightmare

Cool, so everything's sorted right? Brexit is getting done, everything's going back to normal and I never have to talk about trade again.

Oh yeah, no sorry. That's all a lie. We are about to enter the most perilous system-level recalibration of an advanced economy in trading history.

What.

Yeah, all that nightmare of the last four years was the easy part. Now we have to figure out our future trading relationship with the EU.

I saw Boris Johnson on the telly the other day.

Really? That never happens anymore.

No, it was crazy. He just popped up. It was like a Big Foot sighting. Anyway, he seemed to suggest it was all really easy. We'd get it done in a year and then be free to do whatever we want.

Yeah, that's the official narrative. But the reality is very different.

Are you suggesting that the government is making a sustained attempt to deceive the public in order to hide the fact that they have an impossible set of negotiating goals and no competence to deliver them?

Yes, I know. It's hard to believe.

I know what happens now. You start talking about fisheries and regulatory alignment and customs procedures and then I gradually lose the will to live and have to order extremely expensive whisky.

That's right, that's how this works. So here's the thing. The government wants to get the Brexit deal negotiated, ratified and implemented in eleven months, before December 31st. They were entitled to an extension but have decided not to take it. That means the deal is going to have to be proper bare-bones - a completely stripped-down set of negotiating goals.

Like what?

Tariffs, basically. Nothing else. Just eliminate the tariffs.

What are tariffs again?

They're taxes on goods crossing borders. The thing is, most tariffs are already very low. Decades of worldwide tariff-reduction rounds have hammered them down in pretty much every area but agriculture. So it's a very modest bar to set. It also means that services - which are kind of key to our economy - are completely forgotten about. And it does nothing about the real problem areas of trade - alignment, customs checks and rules of origin.

Yeah, that's it. That's where I switch off. I swear these words are like hypnotic suggestions to close down brain function.

Bear with me, they're all pretty simple when you break them down. And the implications of them can smash local economies, which then has a massive political impact. Will people blame Brexit? The government? Or the EU? Remainers? Immigrants? The knock-on effect of these decisions will define our politics for years to come. Which is troubling, because it's not clear the government has any idea what it's doing.

How so?

Take the distinction between goods and services. Sounds simple right? Goods are things and services are, well, services - legal, financial, hairdressing, whatever. But actually that's a crude distinction that doesn't reflect the reality of how businesses work. Car companies, for instance, sell cars. But many of them also often offer the financing for the car, which allows the person buying it to pay in monthly installments. So in that capacity they're actually functioning as a mini-bank. And banking is…

A service.

Exactly. The same is true for loads of companies, like IBM, say, or Hewlett Packard. They sell things. But they also sell services. So even at this very basic level, going for a goods-only deal already has a massive knock-on effect on businesses. If they want to keep on selling the services in Europe, they have to internally restructure to get into the right regulatory regime. Sometimes that'll be big news - they'll close an office or factory. Sometimes it'll be a case of moving staff around or bulking up whatever office they have on the continent to get recognition there, and it'll slip under the radar. But the long-term danger is that all the high-knowledge, proper value-added activity goes to Europe.

Grim.

Yep. And things get uglier when you look at regulations.

Yeah I heard about this. What are they exactly?

Regulations are one of the key aspects of international trade. Countries have different regulatory regimes. So when they trade, people have to show that they are satisfying the requirements of the country the good ends up in. That entails a lot of time and paperwork. Until now, Britain has been part of Europe's regulations regime. Now it wants to completely detach itself. But we're so deeply ingrained in continental trading networks that we can't afford either time or paperwork.

How come?

Basically because of our reliance on a manufacturing system called Just-In-Time. Manufacturing depends on this to keep costs down. It means that you avoid holding a lot of stock. Instead, you get the parts you need, literally, just in time. And we are absolutely locked into this. So for instance BMW makes the engines for its Mini model at Hams Hall just outside Birmingham. But the engine blocks come from France to the UK, where they're drilled and processed, then go to Cologne in Germany for more engineering, then back to the UK for final assembly. GKN in Birmingham also makes the drive line for many cars - this is what transmits power from the engine to the wheels. But it uses components from Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK. Millions of components come across the Channel every day to arrive just as they're needed.

Is this primarily a car thing?

No, it goes across the board, in Britain's most successful manufacturing sectors. Take aviation. Nearly 80% of aerospace components manufactured in the UK are exported. And the important part there is in the word 'components'. That's what we do. We don't make the whole plane. As a country, we specialise in wings, landing gear, engines and avionic systems - the electrical equipment in the cockpit. All of that is regulated by the European Aviation Safety Authority (Easa). Everything you see on a plane in Europe, numbering over 5,000 different parts, has been vouched for by them, down to the little trolley serving you drinks when you ask for your fourth rum and Coke and the air steward starts to look at you suspiciously. Oh, and his training is overseen by them too, as is the pilot's, and that of the engineers.

It's the godfather of aviation regulation.

That's right. The industry is clear: it needs to hold Easa tight. And not just Easa. It also wants a close relationship with Reach - Europe's chemical safety regulation system - because they use those chemicals in the manufacturing process. There is zero reason to deviate from this regulatory framework. There are literally no upsides. The UK is not going to start setting international standards for aviation on its own. The trend in the global industry is towards alignment, because everyone wants the same things - a safe product, with fuel efficiency, which is clean and quiet and cheap to run, and which can be traded in a complex supply chain with a minimum of friction.

Can you stay in Easa from outside the EU though?

Sure. It's an EU body, but it has various agreements with non-EU countries. Or you can just align and basically mimic whatever it does. And why not? The industry will make products to those specifications anyway, simply to trade them easily.

So surely that's what we'd do. It sounds insane to do anything else.

Yes it would be insane, wouldn't it? But apparently that's what's going to happen.

You're not serious.

Who knows. Theresa May's administration had pretty much decided to stay in the system. The political declaration for the future relationship she signed with the EU said the UK would "explore the possibility of cooperation" with Easa and then added: "In this context, the United  Kingdom will consider aligning with Union rules in relevant areas." But then things got a bit weird. Johnson updated the political declaration when he got his deal and he made some small but quite striking changes.

Like?

Well the line on 'exploring possibilities' stayed, but the following sentence, on alignment, was deleted. That raised a lot of alarm. And then the chancellor, Sajid Javid, told the Financial Times this weekend that "there will not be alignment, we will not be a ruletaker". So right now, if we're to take the government's word for it, no - we're going to pull away, for no reason at all, and at enormous cost. Or they could be lying to sound tough and Brexity. Or they could think it's a negotiating gambit with the EU. Who knows?

OK. So you've now been talking about regulations for what feels like several days. Is that it?

No I'm afraid not. The government also wants out of the customs union. That means it's also a customs problem. Manufacturers will have to fill out two sets of forms - one for regulations, one for customs. In the case of agriculture, they'll also have to satisfy health checks - these are called sanitary and phytosanitary measures. And that takes place on or near the border.

Please tell me this section is over. Hell, please tell me it's all over and the final days are upon us. Anything to escape this relentless carnival of doom.

The worst bit is yet to come, I'm afraid. It's called rules of origin and it is horrible. It's a kind of bureaucracy that kicks in when you have a trade agreement.

How does that make sense? Surely trade agreements are suppose to reduce bureaucracy.

Yep, but they need an insurance policy. So imagine the UK and EU do a trade agreement eliminating tariffs. And then the UK does a separate agreement with the US eliminating tariffs.

Sounds ideal.

Quite. But the EU and US don't have a trade deal eliminating tariffs. So now there is an incentive for the US to ship goods to the UK for entry into the EU as a way of sidestepping the taxes on their exports to Europe, but without having to make any of the concessions a trade deal would involve. Rules of origin checks are how you get around that problem.

How do they work?

The purpose of the rules is to find out where something was made. But the way of doing that changes depending on what kind of good it is. There's different rules in different sectors. Sometimes they measure a country's economic contribution to the product, such as its capital or the labour or intellectual input. There's also different grades of change in the product. You often have to show that the product has transformed from one customs category to another in a substantial way.

Did something terrible happen to you when you were a child?

Hey I didn't make the rules. But they do make sense. And this, arguably more than regulations or customs, is going to be one of the defining issues impacting on Britain in the years to come. Actually, it's already happening.

How so?

The EU and South Africa, for instance, have a deal on rules of origin allowing components from the other side to count towards the 'local content' tally. But when the UK leaves, its components will automatically be excluded from the total. So last July BMW redirected engine production from the UK to Germany for South African production. That could be the start of a trend.

How big a problem is this?

Very big. British car production leans heavily on parts and processes in the EU and Turkey. If those are excluded from the calculations, they wouldn't satisfy the rules of origin requirements. And even working it out is a nightmare - a horrible tangled web of multiple supply chains, with their own separate supply chains for component parts, and then multiple layers of subcontractors and goods going back and forth. And it's not just goods like cars and planes either. The same goes for food. Chickens reared in the UK often go off to the Netherlands for slaughter then come back and are turned into ready meals. So how much work went into the chicken to make it British? And what happens when it's put on a frozen supermarket pizza?

Civilised people don't put chicken on pizza.

That's where you're wrong. Chicken is a perfectly respectable pizza topping. But even if the chicken is British, what about the dough, the tomato sauce and all the other stuff? It's a nightmare. Just working this stuff out will put a massive new burden on British producers, who never had to do any of it before. And that assumes they can even pass the test and get the product to a level where it has enough domestic components to satisfy the rules.

Is there any way out of this?

In terms of the faff of it, no. But there is a way to make the test easier to pass. We need the rules of origin to have something called a cumulation provision.That means some inputs from outside the UK count towards domestic content. There are two main ways to do that: bilateral or diagonal. Bilateral would mean stuff done in the EU and UK would count. Diagonal includes the UK and EU and extends it to other countries who have trade deals with both of us. That would fix the South Africa problem BMW had. But even there they have different levels. We would want something called 'full cumulation', meaning that no matter how small the work done in different countries, it counts.

So it's a no-brainer, right? You go for full cumulation diagonal rules of origin. Oh and look at that. You have made the most unspeakable words come out of my mouth.

Yep, you totally would. But that's in the EU's gift. It gives them significant leverage over us. And honestly, listening to the weirdly bullying rhetoric coming from the UK government, it's not clear Downing Street realises that.

Election went to their head.

There's a lot that's gone to their head.

OK so I think I get this. It's ultimately pretty simple right? The Brits want the Brexit talks done in one year so they've reduced their negotiating goal to tariff elimination and that is going to hurt us.

Not all of us equally. Small firms will be hit harder than large firms and poorer areas will be hit harder than richer areas.

But of course, because the reality of the world is inversely proportional to any sense of moral justice.

Pretty much. Small firms selling less than £250,000 of merchandise to the EU, of which there are tens of thousands, will be forced into filling out all sorts of forms they've never had any contact with before. That'll be a much bigger burden on them than it will the big firms selling over that amount, or who already trade with the rest of the world. And the cost of adopting the new system might outweigh the benefit of exporting the goods in the first place.

Why does this mostly affect poorer areas?

Well there's a cruel irony to the effects of a hard Brexit: It won't really hurt Remain-voting areas but it's likely to seriously damage Brexit-supporting areas.

This is insane.

Yes, it is. The kinds of industries which could get really pummelled - automobile, aerospace and that - are mainly based in the Midlands and the North. Remain-voting London, on the other hand, is less exposed to European markets. It's economy is already hyper-globalised, arguably more so than any other city in the world. Decision-makers in the capital are often on the phone to Namibia, Honduras or Belize. But the decision-makers in Hull are more likely to be on the phone to Denmark and Germany.

Gotcha.

There's another problem too.

Oh cool, another one, yeah why not.

Tariffs aren't the only ask. Britain has also got a negotiating goal on fishing.

Fishing? Really? Surely that's a tiny dot in the economy. And given that they've given up services you wouldn't expect them to get too het up about.

True. But it matters to the communities who do it and it has a political importance that far exceeds its economic impact. Britain also has a watertight legal case for its demand. Basically, sovereign coastal states have a 200 mile limit out to sea in which they can fish, under the UN Law of the Sea Convention.

Cool name for an international convention.

Isn't it. The whole thing is very Aquaman.

I always preferred Namor.

Everyone sensible does. He has those little wings on his ankles which let him fly. That is so preposterous and wonderful at the same time. Imagine what it looks like to see him fly with the little wing thingies on his ankles.

You were talking about fisheries policy.

Ah yes. So the British position is simple. We are now going to be a sovereign coastal state. We want our 200 mile limit. We'll decide what goes on there. The EU position is very different. It wants everything to stay the same as it is right now.

And what is the status quo for fishing exactly?

Basically anything outside of 12 miles from a member state is a common area. The stocks of individual fish species are then divided up between countries in set quotas to prevent overfishing. So Britain might have a 15% share of a particular stock, for instance. Those quotas are set. They do not change. But each year scientists provide advice on the total allowable catch. If it was 100,000 tonnes, Britain would get 15,000 tonnes that year. And that's how they divide up the stock.

So they want that to stick.

Yeah. But Britain, on the other hand, will probably want something like what Norway has. Each year, in the autumn, Norway gets together with the Europeans and sorts out some annual fish arrangements. It's fraught and tense, but it has a lot of power in the talks. They haggle over how much of a quota it gets on certain stocks. And unlike in the EU, that quota can change. Sometimes, if no agreement can be reached, Norway just says you can't fish in their waters at all. Britain would love to operate just like that.

Why can't it? You said the law is on the UK side.

It is, but the leverage isn't.

Recurring theme.

Quite. We can take control of our waters and block anyone fishing within 200 miles of them if we want, but there's a problem: we don't eat our own fish. Eighty per cent of what we catch goes to the EU. The fish we actually eat - good old British fish and chips - mostly comes from Norway and Iceland.

Ok, but so what?

So the European threat is simple. If we don't do what they want they'll put tariffs on fish. That would absolutely hammer our fishing industry. The tariffs are high in this area and it would apply on almost everything it sells.

OK so what about some sort of compromise? Maybe the UK could stay in the EU system but they agree to rejig the quotas a bit to placate us.

Tempting, but the trouble is that would involve opening up the whole quota debate across the EU again. It would be like opening Pandora's Fish Box. They won't do that.

So we're faced with two sides with really quite distant goals in a highly emotional area of trade.

Yep. Which is why it's instructive to look at how they plan to talk about this. Britain wants to talk about fish separately to everything else. But the Europeans aren't having any of that. They want to bring the issue into the general trade discussion. And that'll be the attitude throughout - the British trying to silo off individual topics so they can't be used as leverage against each other and the Europeans making it more comprehensive.

What is it the Europeans actually want?

I thought you'd never ask. It's quite simple. They don't want Britain to undercut them. And that's not just about price - it's about regulations, subsidies and taxes.

What do you mean?

Well take Ireland. It basically functions as a kind of tax haven. This distorts the market and leads a bunch of major international companies to set up base there, where they pay hardly any tax. Countries like France hate that. Now, they might not be able to fully control tax policy, but they will want to make damn sure the same thing doesn't happen with Britain.

This is the Singapore of Europe thing right?

Right. Britain will be experiencing two things simultaneously after the end of the transition period. First, a degree of damage to its trading status, the exact extent of which depends on how the trade talks go. And second, some freedom it did not have before. So where does that lead you? Well you're still a big country which can encourage companies to set up with you because of your infrastructure, language, culture and all that. So why not slash corporate taxes to the bone, lower regulations and subsidise business? Make yourself as low standard and attractive as possible. The Europeans want firm commitments to stop this happening.

How do you know?

When the new European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen came to London recently her priorities were clear: "Zero tariffs, zero quotas, zero dumping." That's an interesting set of priorities. Used in this context, 'zero dumping' sounds like code for UK firms undercutting European ones.

Like how?

Well environmental regulations for one. The EU is about to bring in a massive new green initiative, including carbon tax and carbon VAT tax. It doesn't want that undermined by Britain basically exporting lots of dirty carbon to the EU. Same with what's called 'social dumping' - unfair labour practices like easy firing laws. And the same with subsidies - throwing cash at an industry so it can outperform its competitors overseas. This is disciplined at the WTO, but China does very well operating in the grey area of the rules. Britain could try and do the same.

This is really their main priority?

Pretty much. Britain isn't their biggest concern globally - the US and China are - but it is a big meaty economy, which can heavily undercut them, right on their doorstep. Lowering environmental or labour or subsidy standards would allow this, and might tempt firms over from the rest of the world to invest in the UK rather than the EU - or, hell, even get firms in the EU to move. Taken together, this is called the 'level playing field' debate. And it is central to the European negotiating aim.

So this is where one of the main battles will be?

Yep. And it has a knock-on effect on the timetable. Johnson is desperate to get this all done in eleven months. But the level playing field issue has a procedural impact which could make that impossible.

How so?

It's because of how the EU works. It's split up into different competencies. Some things member states have pretty much to themselves, like criminal justice. Some things are mixed competencies, like the environment. And some things are exclusive competencies of the EU, like trade. If the talks with the UK were completely focused on trade, the European Commission could insist that it has exclusive competence. That would be great news for the UK. It would mean that only the Council, where national leaders meet, and the parliament, where MEPs vote, needed to sign off on the deal. But if the deal expands to include things like the environment - and the level playing field issue does exactly that - then it becomes a mixed agreement. And that means you need each and every member state to ratify it according to their domestic political arrangements.

Christ alive. So every national parliament would need to OK it?

Yeah and not just them. In some cases, their constitutional arrangements mean even regional parliaments, like the one in Wallonia in Belgium, would also need to ratify. When Canada did a trade deal with the EU, Wallonia actually refused and for a brief moment it looked like the whole thing would fall down.

Damn.

And actually it goes further than that. A non-mixed agreement would be decided by a qualified vote in the Council. That's important, because it means you don't have to keep them all on board - just most of them. But if it has to be decided by every individual state, you need something for everyone in there, and nothing too terrible for anyone either. The whole thing becomes a lot more complicated and hard to negotiate.

Can the UK prevent this?

It's unlikely. Nearly everyone believes this is a mixed agreement. Member states want to maintain EU unity, but they all have different interests with the UK. They'll want to be able to have an impact on negotiations.

So that it then? There's no way Johnson can get his deal ratified in time?

Yes and no. There is still a get-out clause. The UK and EU can take the trade aspects and provisionally apply them in areas where the EU has exclusive competence. Then the deal goes out for ratification to national parliaments, for however long that takes. And then when they've agreed, it's all put back together and gets properly ratified. There's a bit of wriggle room, basically.

OK.

The trouble is what happens if a member state says no. That happens. The Netherlands rejected the EU's association agreement with Ukraine after a referendum. Greece decided it wanted protection for Ouzo in the South African talks. And if that happens, you have to reopen the agreement and work it all through again to try and find a compromise. Basically, you are sucked into the domestic and regional politics of 27 other member states. And there's no predicting which way that will go.

God.

Yeah. And then there's the thing we haven't mentioned, which is an absolute monster of administrative confusion and grim political consequences.

I can't believe this isn't over yet and you are still talking. Have I died and gone to the Bad Place?

We're all in the Bad Place. You must surely know that now.

Yeah, good point. OK, hit me.

Northern Ireland.

Christ, I'd forgotten about that.

So has the British government. This week, the Stormont Assembly voted unanimously - all parties and not a single vote against - to withhold consent from Johnson's Brexit deal. But even without their consent, it is going to be imposed on them. And it is an absolute godawful mess.

Why?

The deal Johnson did with the EU on Northern Ireland says that it stays in the UK customs territory but follows EU customs rules. It's not clear that he understood the implications of this. It means that a British trader selling into Northern Ireland would need to prove the goods are going to stay there, or pay the EU tariff.

Doesn't sound so bad.

But think about how weird it is. All around the world, goods arriving at a customs border are asked questions about the past - what is it, where was it made, how was it made? But now they are going to be asked questions about their future - where will it end up? And that is fundamentally unknowable. How do you prove it stayed in Northern Ireland? Let's say it's by a receipt on sale. How do you prove that the person you sold it to isn't then selling it into the EU? And this isn't just for final goods. It's also for goods for processing. So you need to know about the supply chain of the people you sell to as well.

I see the problem.

We don't even really have much data to prepare us for this because we don't track British trade to Northern Ireland, for the simple reason that it was always treated as domestic. The kind of information you'd usually have to prepare for a free trade agreement simply doesn't exist.

This is horrible.

It gets much worse. How is Northern Ireland supposed to prepare for this? If the British government succeeds in securing zero tariffs across the board, then life gets marginally easier, although you'd still need to deal with regulatory checks. But if it doesn't, we won't know what the outstanding tariffs will be until close to the deadline. And the Northern Irish system needs to be up and running at the end of transition on December 31st, with all the infrastructure and monitoring that entails. Put simply: It can't be done.

What's Johnson's plan?

He doesn't have one, or at least he hasn't revealed it. Probably the former. He still insist trade will be frictionless, even though this simply cannot be true by virtue of the deal he himself signed. The government also insists that "largely electronic" processes - the high-tech-solutions band back together again for a reunion tour - will solve everything. And then, even if everything works out in the best possible way and all the highest aspirations of the high-tech solutions come to pass, there is still a ghastly problem we have to face.

Alright, I'm strapped in. What is it?

Rules of origin.

No, come on. Not again man. Don't do this to me. We've done that.

Yeah, but it applies here too. The Northern Ireland arrangement is permanent. It stays in place even if the UK and EU have a trade agreement. And that means it has to function as if it's in the EU customs union. And that means…

Rules of origin between Britain and Northern Ireland.

Exactly. Those laborious, nightmarish requirements, carved right into UK territory.

Do they have to do these checks at the border?

No. You can do it away from the border. But the impact on businesses will be huge. Exporters from Britain, who are used to sending things to Northern Ireland as if it were the same country, will suddenly face the full bureaucratic horror show of rules of origin. They will need to decide if they want to go to all the work of figuring out where all their inputs come from, and where their suppliers source their inputs, and where their supplier's suppliers source their inputs. Or whether it is cheaper to simply stop exporting to Northern Ireland. Which many of them are very likely to do.

What's the political consequence of this?

It shows that Johnson's promise of frictionless trade between Britain and Northern Ireland is an outright lie. In fact, his deal creates a permanent border within the UK. It will never go away. It is set in stone. And the worst part, the really immoral part, is that this is happening without the consent of the people it is being imposed on. How that plays out, against the background of Irish politics and the prospect of sudden infrastructure and monitoring arrangements, and impossible timetables, is anyone's guess. But one thing is clear: No responsible person would have done this.

OK. Please tell me this is over now.

Yes. But also, it's only just beginning.

Just on the off chance that I fell asleep through any of that, can you give me a quick executive summary.

Sure. Johnson has set himself an arbitrary one-year deadline for a trade talk with the EU. The consequence of this is that the deal is bare bones, excluding services or - probably, if they're not lying - alignment on goods. Unless he changes course, this will be highly damaging to UK industry, especially those based in the Midlands and the North. He also wants control of fisheries. The EU want fisheries to stay as they were and a set of level playing field provisions to stop the UK undercutting them in future. They will try to secure these outcomes by keeping all the issues in play at the same time, so they can leverage them against each other. Whatever happens, the UK must deal with rules of origin requirements, which are extremely painful and will have potentially ruinous results between Britain and Northern Ireland.

Can you make it shorter than that?

The government either does not know what it is doing or is not prepared to reveal what it is doing. We are heading towards a truly disastrous set of outcomes unless that changes.

Tui now offers coronavirus cover – as its customers and crew embrace ‘new normal’ way of travelling 

Tui is now offering coronavirus cover to all its holidaymakers until the end of the year.

The cover – which Tui says should be used alongside normal travel insurance – will be applied to all new and existing bookings for holidays taken until December 31, 2020, and comes as customers and crew embrace the ‘new normal’ way of travelling.

The scheme includes cover for overseas testing of suspected Covid-19 cases and overseas medical assistance if a customer contracts the virus while on holiday.

It also covers any costs associated with an extended stay and a new return flight back to the UK if customers are asked to self-isolate while on holiday. There is also a dedicated 24/7 emergency hotline and app.

BA recently revealed that its preferred travel insurance provider, Allianz Assistance, has updated its policy to cover Covid-19.

The airline said the policy would cover customers if they or their family are diagnosed with the virus, or if they have to quarantine after being exposed to it.

Last week, Andrew Flintham, managing director of Tui UK and Northern Ireland, meanwhile, said holidaymakers would need to be prepared for some changes as operations gradually begin again but was confident they would enjoy their trips.

At the weekend, the company began running a limited number of flights and holidays to the Spanish destinations of Ibiza, Lanzarote, Palma and Tenerife.

While British quarantine rules mean travellers no longer need to self-isolate when returning to or visiting the UK from certain countries, there are still foreign coronavirus regulations to consider.

On Monday, the Balearic Government ruled that face masks must be worn on its islands at all times apart from at beaches and swimming pools, and while doing sports activities. Anyone breaking the rule in public spaces risks receiving a 100 euro fine.

Speaking at the weekend, Ben Campbell, a 25-year-old cabin crew member at Tui, said he was ‘really excited’ to return to work for the first time since March.

He explained: ‘For me as a crew member this is probably the longest I’ve been in the UK for about six years, so it’s been strange for me.

Mr Campbell said colleagues were ‘really prepared’ to run flights, but acknowledged ‘people need to be aware that things are going to take a bit longer’. 

He added: ‘Things like disembarking, that’s going to be a little bit slower. People might have to bear with us a little bit more.’ 

Tui intends to fill as many seats on its flights as possible and believes a combination of cleaning, staggered boarding, air filters and face masks make them safe. 

Richard Sofer, commercial business development director, said Tui followed European Union Aviation Safety Agency recommendations and that travellers ‘understand there’s a little bit of risk’.

He argued that there was no evidence that ‘leaving a seat in the middle is giving you any protection’.

‘The recommendation is if you can’t social distance, you’re wearing masks.’

He added: ‘You are at no more risk than if you’re on a public bus.’

At hotels, where pools are open, customers find social distancing markers, no buffet service, outdoor entertainment only and socially distanced sunbeds and restaurant tables.  

Helen Cooke, Tui’s resort team manager for Ibiza and Formentera, said local communities are ‘100 per cent’ ready to welcome tourists back.

A resident of Ibiza for 23 years, she added: ‘I live and work on this island and I think everyone has a responsibility to take precautions.’

Meanwhile, Tui says it will be taking holidaymakers to a total of 24 destinations from August 1, flying from 12 UK airports, subject to government guidance.

Over the next week, flights will resume between the UK and the Greek hotspots of Heraklion, Rhodes, Kos and Corfu.  

From July 25, flights will begin to the Spanish destinations of Menorca, Malaga, Alicante, Reus, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria as well as to Zakynthos in Greece.

From August 1, flights will restart to other Greek destinations – Chania, Kefalonia, Skiathos, Santorini and Thessaloniki. Services will also resume to the Turkish hotspots of Dalaman, Antalya, Izmir and Bodrum.

Tui says it also plans to restart holidays to other popular summer destinations in Portugal, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco over the coming months as governments further ease travel restrictions.

  If you hope to teach English online, getting your TEFL certification is a great idea. In fact, if you plan to teach English abroad in any capacity, getting your TEFL course online should be high on your to-do list.

I’ve been an online English teacher with VIPKID for 3 years, and in order to get that job, I took a TEFL course. The beauty of taking a TEFL course online is that you can do it while you’re working a full-time job, or while you’re travelling — you just need a wifi connection.

In this post, I’ll cover the basics of TEFL certification and the best TEFL courses for online English teachers.

What is a TEFL Certificate? 

A TEFL Certificate is a qualification that’s recognized internationally. It allows you to teach English abroad and is a crucial part of your teaching job application. 

There are a few types of TEFL certifications, and the acronyms can be a bit confusing!

1. TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language). This certification is used worldwide for teachers who want to teach English abroad to foreign students (or teach English online to foreign students). Example: A Canadian teaching English in China, or an American teaching English as a second language in Mexico.

2. TESL (Teach English as a Second Language). This certification is used by those who are teaching English in their own country to someone who needs to learn English as their second language. Example: A Brit teaching English to immigrants in England. 

3. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This certification is used for those who want to teach English either abroad as a foreign language, or in a country that speaks English as its native language. It’s similar to TESL (above), but isn’t as widely used or recognized.

4. CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The acronym doesn’t really work for this one! CELTA is the more expensive, “posh” version of TESOL, and is specific to Cambridge University.

Now that that’s out of the way, we’re going to focus on TEFL Certifications in this article. 

Having a TEFL certificate will allow you to apply for jobs teaching English in foreign countries or jobs teaching English online.

The typical curriculum covers teaching fundamentals, how to create lesson plans, and how to instruct students in English grammar, reading, speaking, and writing. 

Who Needs a TEFL Certificate? 

Anyone who plans to teach English abroad or teach English online should look into getting their TEFL certification. TEFL certificates are widely known and valued in the English teaching industry.

I got my TEFL certificate even though I already had a Master’s in Teaching and three years of formal classroom experience. I didn’t want to disqualify myself from a potential job just because I lacked the credential they required. 

Most in-person English teaching jobs around the world want teachers that have a TEFL certification. Even in places where a TEFL isn’t required, you’ll likely get a higher pay rate and have more employment options if you have one.

Will I Need a TEFL Certification to Teach Online?

That depends, but probably.

A few years ago, online ESL companies were mainly concerned with hiring native English speakers. Now, with more regulations on online teaching and more competition between companies, requirements are stricter. 

It’s becoming common for online English companies to require that all teachers have a TEFL certificate.

China recently passed a law that says all online English teachers must either have a TEFL certification or a traditional teaching license.

Considering how many of the large online ESL companies cater to the Chinese market, you can imagine how many teachers were impacted.

But even if your online teaching company doesn’t require a TEFL certificate, it’s a good idea to get one anyway. With a TEFL certificate, you’ll have two main advantages: 

ESL Teaching Skills 

During your TEFL course online, you’ll learn best teaching practices that will improve your skills as an educator. 

A lot of people think “If I speak English, I can teach it, right?” But this isn’t the case. Teaching a language is very different from speaking a language. Some people who speak excellent English don’t make great teachers. 

Teaching, like any skill, must be learned and practiced. In a TEFL certification online course, you’ll have the opportunity to do exactly that. 

Getting a TEFL certification is especially important if you don’t have a formal teaching background. You’ll want to gain as much practical teaching knowledge as possible so you can impress your future students and employers. 

Job Security

If for some reason your online ESL company changes their requirements, having your TEFL certification could be the difference between keeping your job and having to find another one. 

If you need to switch companies at some point during your online teaching career, having your TEFL certification already taken care of means you’ll have more options. 

Also, if you ever decided to transition into in-person teaching, you would already have the certification you need. Even if you have online teaching experience, most schools still need to see proof of your TEFL course completion for you to be eligible to teach. 

For me, having a TEFL certificate feels like a security net. I know that if I’m ever unable to teach online for some reason, I can use my TEFL certificate to get a job teaching abroad instead. Having TEFL credentials only improves your choices.

Which TEFL Course Should I Take?

That’s a great question! A quick google search will show you that there are dozens of TEFL courses out there, so it can be difficult to know which one is best for you.

There are a few things to consider when making your decision.

1. Accreditation 

In order for your TEFL certification to have any meaning, it needs to be accredited. 

You may have seen ads on discount websites for $5 TEFL courses or even websites offering Free TEFL courses. Unfortunately, these usually are not accredited and won’t do you much good when it’s time to get hired. 

While you might be able to get away with an unaccredited TEFL course with some uninformed employers, I wouldn’t recommend doing that. It’s not worth risking your job if someone discovered that your certification wasn’t legitimate.

Taking a TEFL course that has been accredited means that a third party approved the curriculum and teaching methodologies of the course.

You’ll know for sure that what you’re learning is correct and up to date. This helps you become a more effective English teacher in the long run.

2. Number Of Hours 

When you start looking into TEFL courses, you’ll see the number of hours for the course. This represents the number of hours you will study to get the certification. In general, you want a course that offers at least 120 hours.

Now, if you do a self-paced online TEFL course, there’s a very good chance you’ll finish in less than 120 hours. But that 120-hour course will cover much more content than a 40-hour or 60-hour course.

Most TEFL employers want to see the 120-hour certificate. 

3. Online, In-Person, and Combination Courses

TEFL courses fall into three categories: online, in-person, and hybrid courses that combine the two.

Online TEFL Courses: Online TEFL courses are great if you need schedule and location flexibility.

Before I started teaching online and travelling, I did an online TEFL course because it worked out well with my job. I was able to go to work during the day and complete my TEFL course online in the evenings and on weekends. 

Online TEFL courses are often self-paced and may take longer to complete than in-person TEFL courses. They are also usually less expensive. 

The downside of choosing an online TEFL course is that you won’t get real-time demonstrations and feedback on your teaching.

While your course might include video content, there’s no replacement for actually standing in front of people and applying the material.

This is where In-Person TEFL courses shine.

In-Person TEFL Courses: With an in-person course, you’ll do all your training and practical student teaching during a shorter time frame, usually a few weeks.

You can also choose to do your TEFL training abroad, meaning you’ll get to explore a new place while learning new skills. 

In-person TEFL courses are better for those who want to get TEFL certified as soon as possible. You’ll also leave with more experience teaching in real life.

In-person TEFL courses are usually more expensive.

The benefit is that you’ll be ready to start teaching sooner, have more practical experience, experience living in a new country, receive job placement assistance in that country afterward, and meet other aspiring TEFL teachers in your class. Plus, your accommodation and some excursions and activities are also included.

Hybrid Or Combination Courses: The third option is to combine online and in-person elements into a hybrid or combination class. With these class formats, you’ll do most of the written work online independently.

Then, your TEFL company will arrange opportunities for you to do in-person teaching days, possibly with other students. This means you’ll get a chance to apply what you’ve learned and receive feedback before applying for teaching jobs. 

4. Practicum Teaching

Some TEFL courses will also include a practical teaching component. During your practicum, you will either practice teaching a lesson to real students or observe English lessons taught by established teachers. 

Practicum experience can also be tutoring one-on-one, student teaching, or volunteering with a local organization that offers English classes. 

Here’s how this plays out in different TEFL courses:

In-Person TEFL Courses: The course arranges the practical teaching opportunity for you. You will observe and practice teach during your in-person TEFL course. 

Hybrid TEFL Courses: You do the theoretical parts of the course online on your own time. There are special in-person training days that you can attend to get your practical experience hours.

Fully Online Independent TEFL Courses: You do the course on your own and you are responsible for arranging your own practical teaching opportunities. 

When you complete your practical component, you’ll need to have the supervisor or lead teacher sign off on your hours. You submit this to the TEFL company when you finish your training. 

While there are lots of ways to fulfill your practicum teaching requirement, it can be time-consuming to arrange. 

Not all TEFL courses have a practical teaching component. But it’s a good idea to consider one that does if you want to get some hands-on teaching experience before diving headfirst into the classroom.

Travel is Never Going to Be the Same Again

If you’re like me, you might be wondering what the future of travel holds now that more countries are easing lockdowns and opening borders. I wrote about the future of travel back in March but, like everything COVID related, a lot has changed since then.

Lately, days feel like years and months feel like decades.

Given how much has changed — and how fast things are still changing — I want to revisit this topic.

There have been a plethora of articles lately about how destinations and companies will change and what travel will look like once we head out on the road again.

I agree with many of the points my colleagues make.

Yes, local/domestic travel will be big over the next few months as people forgo international/cross-border travel for travel within their own country. Yes, many countries will require a COVID test at the border or, at the very least, proof of a recent negative COVID test to enter. Yes, most companies will tout their cleaning policies more as a way to attract customers.

And, yes, the travel industry’s recovery will be slow as people cautiously head out into the world again.

But I think too many have blinders and are underestimating just how bad it’s going to be for the industry. They simply don’t want to see the ugly truth:

The sky is falling – and this industry is about to see a massive shakeup.

Because people make travel happen.

Without people, travel doesn’t exist.

And the more I talk to readers, friends, and other travelers, the more I realize people will not travel again in large numbers until there’s either a vaccine, treatment, or a decline in cases after reopening.

Humans are hardwired to minimize risk and uncertainty. We didn’t leave the cave after dark because of the danger out there. The night brought terrors and risks. That risk-reduction psychology has stayed with us through the millennia. It’s why we always go with the devil we know and stay in jobs we don’t love but are stable.

Humans always reduce risk.

So, even as countries open their borders, most people are taking a wait-and-see approach.

And I can see that not just through my interactions with friends and readers but through Google too. Even as parts of the world have started to reopen, this website has seen no increase in our search traffic. We rank for such a wide variety of keywords and often in the top 1-3 results that I can use my site’s traffic as a good barometer for consumer sentiment. (But TripAdvisor and Kayak have shown similar research though.)

People walk before they run and they search for travel and begin to plan months in advance before actually booking it.

That means if people aren’t searching for travel now, they are unlikely to take a trip in the next few months.

That is not good news.

If companies talked to end consumers more, they would know this. Maybe they do. But their press statements suggest there is just a huge pent-up demand waiting for travel that will save the industry anytime now.

Yeah, people all want to travel. Just not anytime soon.

Twenty percent of people will go traveling the second they can and another twenty are so risk-averse they are probably going to wait for some vaccine.

Everyone else? They want to see what happens to the first 20%.

There are just so many unknowns.

Will you be quarantined? Will you pick COVID up and bring it home? What happens if you think you’re fine but end up sick, aren’t able to get home, and you’re now stuck somewhere for two weeks?

And what about the destination itself? will attractions be closed or restricted? Will some activities be canceled? Will transportation be limited? Will distancing regulations interfere with meals, transportation, tours, and other activities? Will you have to spend your vacation wearing a mask? What if others aren’t wearing a mask?

There are too many variables and people don’t want to spend their one big trip worrying all the time. Travel is supposed to be a relaxing escape.

It doesn’t matter what hygiene or social distancing measures countries, tour operators, or airlines take. In a recent poll, only 28% said open borders would make them feel safe. That’s the crowd that will travel. The rest are staying home.

Right now, most of the travel industry is relying on meager savings, government loans, and a lot of hope. The industry is in a severe depression right now with 60% of jobs lost. Things are bad. We’re all just hoping for some semblance of a summer travel season to get through the rest of the year and keep our businesses afloat.

But I think hope is going to smack into reality really soon when this travel season is a lot shorter than we imagined — and with a lot fewer people. While local travel will grow, there simply aren’t enough local tourists to make up for the missing international ones.

Plus, let’s not forget capacity restrictions.

How many hostels, hotels, or airlines can operate at 50% capacity? How big can Airbnb remain if no one wants to stay in other people’s homes? How many walking tour companies can be sustained by vastly fewer tourists?

I think this fall we’re going to see many tour operators, hostels, independent hotels, magazines, creators, and other businesses in this space go under. A bloodbath is coming. (And this site is not immune. We’re barely treading water. At our current spend, we’ll be bankrupt by Feb 2021 if something doesn’t change.)

But, while the job loss will be terrible, travel was in need of serious reform. It had simply grown too big. We were in a Gold Rush. From VC-backed startups to hostels to influencers to tour companies, there was just too much of everything. Overtourism was a huge problem. Destinations just weren’t built to handle so many people and the environmental impact from all this travel was staggering.

In my opinion, we were due for a realignment.

I want people to go explore the world but, if so many of us are going to do that, then we need to do so in a more sustainable and managed way.

We need to take a step back and say “Ok, how do we make this work for everyone involved?”

Many destinations will use this downtime to change their policies to ensure more sustainable numbers of visitors in the future. You can already see this happening in Venice, Amsterdam, Prague, and Barcelona.

Everyone can literally start from zero to create a more sustainable travel sector.

Will this mean it will be as easy to travel in the future as it was in the past? Maybe. Maybe not.

We should spread out our tourism more. Iceland is more than Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon. Spain is more than Madrid and Barcelona. Venice isn’t big enough to handle all our numbers. Indonesia has over seventeen thousand islands not just Bali.

That might raise prices for some destinations but long before this boom in travel, there was budget travel. There have always been ways to save money on the road. There will still be ways to save money on the road when this is all over.

I’m not worried about travel becoming too expensive. Even if some places become less accessible (and, honestly, to protect places like the Galapagos, Everest, or the Machu Picchu, we should greatly reduce the numbers who go there), there’s still plenty of places in the world on a budget!

But that is a problem for later because, as the crowds grow slower than destinations and companies hope, by the time we have a conversation about what “the future” looks like, most travel companies will be out of business anyway.

What is coming is a seismic shift as large as when the Internet transformed how we book travel and get information.

And I don’t think we’re prepared for that.

Spotlight Series: Mary Jane Gibson

Actress, writer and former lifestyle, entertainment and culture editor at High Times, Mary Jane Gibson is a force in the emerging cannabis industry. Her projects and interviews have earned her the title “one of the 15 most powerful women in the weed industry” by Complex Magazine.

How did you get involved in the cannabis industry?

I was working as a writer and performer in New York and met the managing editor of High Times magazine at a party. She offered me part-time work as a copy editor, and from there I worked my way up to writing assignments. I was offered a full-time editorial position at High Times in 2014, and moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to help open the West Coast office. I left HT in 2018 to pursue other opportunities, and now write for several outlets, plus I record and produce Weed+Grub, the podcast that I co-host with comedian Mike Glazer—it’s my absolute favorite thing.

Tell us a little bit about your product or service

My co-host Mike Glazer and I smoke, snack and swap tales about cannabis, comedy, sex, cooking, pop culture—basically everything you already love. Weed+Grub is a free-flowing conversation between two great friends sharing laughs and stories from our insane lives, with fascinating guests from all kinds of backgrounds. We’ve interviewed Jim Belushi, Tommy Chong, trans icon Buck Angel, cannabis activist Amy Margolis, NYTimes bestselling cookbook authors Thug Kitchen, System of a Down’s Shavo Odadjian, and many more. We also have a Spotlight Series where we highlight brands and companies working to make the world a better place. What time does your day typically start and what does a normal day look like to you?

I’m a night owl, not an early-morning person, so I generally don’t get going until 9am. My cat Bobo usually howls at me to get up and feed him, so I don’t need to set an alarm. I make coffee and walk my dog Archie, and then I settle in at my desk for the day. Mike and I started a production company called Big Fat Content, and we have several projects in the works in addition to Weed+Grub. We drop two episodes of the podcast every week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, so we have a lot of recording and editing to do. And I’m usually working on at least two articles for publication—I write for several outlets including DOPE Magazine, Weedmaps, Leafly, Civilized and Rolling Stone. I try to wind down computer work by 6:30 or so and get out to enjoy an evening walk with Archie. Then I’ll come home and cook dinner—Mike and I are developing recipes for a Weed+Grub cookbook right now, so I have a lot of fun getting pleasantly baked and figuring out new dishes, usually while listening to a favorite podcast like My Favorite Murder. I love hanging in the kitchen and then eating on my patio under the stars.

What is your vision for your company going forward?

At this time next year, I’d like our production company Big Fat Content to have three shows on the air and two in production, in addition to creating content for cannabis brands and companies. Weed+Grub will continue to grow—we’ll travel all over the US and Canada, to Spain and beyond, documenting cannabis, cuisine, and culture around the world.

What would an ideal post-prohibition society look like to you?

Safe and fair access to cannabis for all. All records for non-violent drug offenses expunged. Social equity programs offering assistance to people whose lives have been ruined by the War on Drugs. Cannabis research and clinical trials. Public school education programs teaching the next generation about cannabis. Corporations that profit from legal cannabis donating a large portion of their proceeds to arts funding. Interstate and international cannabis trade, just as we have with wine, so everyone around the world can taste glorious California weed. The right for everyone to grow their own. And lots of dinner parties with great friends enjoying the herb together.

What was your first experience with cannabis like?

It was hash, rolled in a spliff. Growing up in Newfoundland, we didn’t have much access to weed—if you could get a gram of hash, that was fantastic. I still love the smell of tobacco and hash, mixed with a little Nag Champa. That’s the scent of my teenage years. I remember getting stoned at a friend’s house during a snowstorm, listening to Copper Blue by Sugar, and watching the snow drift across the St. John’s harbor like swirls of plankton. It was magical.

Tell us about some of the challenges you face working in the cannabis industry

As the landscape shifts and evolves, there’s a lot of jockeying for position. The industry is uncertain, and wildly exciting—it’s still illegal under federal law but 11 states have passed adult-use consumption laws. How bizarre is that?! Companies can flourish and fail in a matter of months. I’m positioned as a chronicler of the industry, both as a writer and with Weed+Grub, so I haven’t been affected by ever-changing rules and regulations, but I certainly see friends and colleagues fighting to navigate this new frontier of legal cannabis.

What are some solutions you've found?

Weed+Grub is working to destigmatize and normalize cannabis—and we try to hold everyone accountable for the role they’re playing in this new landscape. Is it fair that former Speaker of the House John Boehner is profiting from legal cannabis while people are suffering in prison for non-violent drug offenses? No—and it’s everyone’s job to call out hypocrisy and ensure that this burgeoning industry is fair to everyone, not just wealthy white people. We talk a lot about that—and we also have a great time fighting about whether milk chocolate is better than dark (it is). It’s that combo of fun and real info that people tune in to hear.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about cannabis? 

That, even if it’s not for you, it’s helped someone you know. Whether or not you consume cannabis, you should never judge anyone who does—you should be an ally for cannabis consumers to have safe and fair access, whether it’s as medicine or a safer alternative to a glass of wine at night. Don’t judge.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about your product or service?

I hope that anyone checking us out for the first time listens to a few different episodes—because, while we get baked and silly, we also tell important stories and speak to fascinating people from all walks of life about heavy-hitting subjects. We have fun in order to reach the most people with our message: cannabis is normal and cool, however, you’re choosing to use it.

If you could go back in time and do it all over again, what (if anything) would you do differently?

I’d stand up faster and harder to the few people who questioned my ability to contribute to the cultural conversation. Don’t ever doubt your own worth. Otherwise, zero regrets—apart from not hitting that blunt when Wiz Khalifa handed it to me at a High Times cover shoot.

What is your favorite way to consume cannabis?

Tincture before a hike. Smoking a joint with friends. A low-dose edible before bed.

Concentrate or flower? Why? 

Flower, because my tolerance is low and I only need a little bit to get that perfect lift. I did a dab at a dinner party on a ranch in Malibu once and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life, but on the daily, I dig a sweet hybrid pre-roll from Lowell Farms or a little nug of homegrown in my Summerland apple pipe. I also really like the new cannabis oil vape from Lowell.

Do you think cannabis legalization will change the world for the better? Why? 

I really want to say “no duh, of course it will,” but it’s serious. Yes, cannabis legalization will change the world for the better. When people are no longer going to jail, losing their families, when cannabis is available as much-needed medicine to anyone who needs it, when the world can breathe a collective sigh of relief because the plant is free, we’ll all be much better for it. If you don’t like cannabis, take another look at it and examine your prejudices. And at the very least, educate yourself on why it’s illegal in the first place—because of racism and fear. We need to liberate the leaf for a better world.

What advice would you offer to another woman who is looking to get into the industry?

Join NORML. Get involved with local meetups. Educate yourself on the history of the War on Drugs and why cannabis is illegal in the first place so you can be an effective advocate for legalization. Make friends who love cannabis as much as you do, and organize salons with them. Start from a place of education and inspiration, and the rest will flow.

Do sub-appellations, especially of the geographic type, make wine more confusing for wine consumers, or are they meant more for connoisseurs who understand already basic geography and regions and are looking for specialist and niche wines?

  Natalie: 00:00 All right, so what’s the difference between orange wine and natural line and how about blue wine is blue, the new orange. And how about trends in the wine world? What’s, what’s hot and new, if you will, what’s coming this fall? What can we expect? Which wines are growing quickly? , what do we need to know? That’s exactly what we’re going to learn from our next guest on the Sunday Sipper club show. So welcome everybody. Okay, so let me tell you about our next guest. So, one second here. So , our guest this evening has been working as a journalist for 28 years and writing about wine for the past five for one of the, of the country’s largest newspapers, the Calgary Herald. And before that for wine access magazine, he is also judged wine competitions. And in 2013 he wrote, uncorked the definitive guide to Alberta’s best wines under $25 with his friend and fellow wine writer, Shelly Butcher. And he joins me live now from his home in Calgary. Welcome to the Sunday Sipper club. Darren Oleksyn, how are you?

Darren: 03:28 I’m great. How are you doing?

Natalie: 03:29 Good. Good. Good. Thanks for joining us. We’re all excited to talk to you Darren. So there is just so much to cover here. I don’t know even know where to start, but maybe, because the question I get and maybe you get it as well as a columnist. Let’s start by sorting out what’s the difference between these natural wines and the orange wines.

Darren: 03:50 Okay. well, natural wine is basically wine in its purest form. They, , do it as simple as they can. They grow organic grapes are biodynamic grapes. They bring them in, they use natural yeast that’s in the air. They don’t add any yeast. You don’t add any kind of additives or chemicals or anything. They make the wine and they put no sulfur or maybe just a small amount of sulfur in the wine at the end to see before they work it. And there it is. It’s whining, it’s purest form. Whereas orange wine is not necessarily natural wine. It’s kind of like a. all sparkling champagne is sparkling wine, but all sparkling wine is not champaign. Orange wine is white wine where they ferment it on the skins, so it sits on the skins for quite awhile. Like this color, that’s where you get the orange color from and you get 10 in, which is something you don’t necessarily see very often in a white wine. Right?

Natalie: 04:44 Yeah. And I find I’ve got an orange wine right here from south brook in Ontario and I find it exotic, like sort of like earl grey tea and different things. I’ve never tasted in a white wine

Darren: 04:58 very, very different. you know, your flavors are a little different and the seal is a whole different experience. It’s, you know, it’s for someone who doesn’t like white wine but likes red wine, it could maybe be sort of a wind to get you into a white wines. It’s sort of that in betweens a territory.

Natalie: 05:14 Absolutely. And I’ve also heard that orange wine can be kind of a wine for beer drinkers. I find a lot of similarities between this and some of the craft beers, but just the nose it, it’s just a, there’s something going on there.

Darren: 05:26 Definitely. And there’s a lot of times there’s sort of a sour note to with that you can find in some of the craft beers too. So that’s a similarity. Yeah.

Natalie: 05:34 Oh, okay. And I’m going back to natural wines. Is this a new phenomenon or like where did this trends start, if you will, or what’s the origin of natural wines?

Darren: 05:45 It’s a somewhat new, I guess it’s sort of dates back to the 19 eighties. , there was a group of winemakers in La and southern France who decided they wanted to try making wine without chemicals or any additives or any soul for a part of the reason was they thought maybe they would have a less hangovers because it’d be sulfur in the wine. They thought that that might be a problem. So he started making these natural wines and it’s kind of taken off. It’s really built. It was sort of a cult following and it’s really broadened out now. There’s actually sort of a seminars or festivals now around the world for natural wines and it’s become quite a, quite a big thing. And people are very passionate about it.

Natalie: 06:28 Yes, there are. There’s books and there’s evangelists and , yeah, it’s a big thing., and I just wanted to welcome, , people who are kinda coming into our virtual wine bar here. Darren. We’ve got Linda Michael’s in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and it’s a lovely day there. Beverly Aslan is in southern California where it’s 81 degrees. This is a weather report. Erin. Darren, what’s the association there between what I’ve heard, like with Georgia, not to US Georgia, but Georgia, Russia, Georgia or whatever, the country. Georgia. And was it a very. How do you say that? Quit very clearly. I think. Yeah, the for like the clay big, what’s the association there? Can you tell us a little bit of background there.

Darren: 07:52 Sure. Well lady who basically been making orange wines there for eight thousand years, it’s, they think it may be the birthplace of wine pretty much and they made the skin fermented white wines. They fermented everything on the skin, red or white, they would put it in these big clay. I’m for a that are dug into the ground to keep the temperature somewhat moderate and, you know, it’s worked. It’s worked for thousands of years. We’ve sort of gone back to the way things were.

Natalie: 08:22 Wow. So what’s old is new and everything comes around again and cycles, cycles, cycles. It is, isn’t it? Okay. So, do you have an orange wine there or is it a blue wine that you have?

Darren: 08:33 I have a bit of both actually. I have an orange wine for Loire valley.

Natalie: 08:38 Okay. And it’s a yes, I can see it when you hold it up to the camera there. Yeah, that’s good. Okay.

Darren: 08:45 Actually, you know, which is not your typical Loire valley grape. But no, it’s beautiful. It’s got a tanny , sort of Tangerine flavors, full a fuller body. You can feel the tannins. Nice balance. It’s a drinking very well.

Natalie: 09:02 Nice. Okay. And so Darren is blue, the new orange. We’ve got blue wine. Tell us about what this is. It looks odd

Darren: 09:11 and got this crazy one. It looks like it’s going to taste like scope. It kind of reminds me of a listerine in the bathroom or antifreeze as well, but it’s all nice images. I would say, , the blue wine, whereas orange wine and natural wine and sort of a trend that’s growing and gaining favor. Blue one is more like a marketing trend. I would say it started in Spain by some marketing people, I guess you would say. They admit even on their website that they weren’t,, they’re not wine makers that just wanted to shake things up. So they started making this wine. It’s the wine I have is a different one, but the sort of, the first one was known as gik and it was a blend of red and white wine and then they would add coloring, indigo and Anthocyanin and which is a, it’s a blue pigment, often found in skins, like grape skins and blueberries and that sort of thing. So that gives it the blue tinge.

Natalie: 10:09 So it’s natural coloring, if you will, from the grape skins.

Darren: 10:12 I guess somewhat. I don’t know how official officially natural it is. That could be powdered color. I’m not sure how they added to wine, but it certainly looks sharp on Instagram and, well that’s what it’s all about. Right? Totally. It’s, eye catcher.

Natalie: 10:31 It is. It just sounds like a wine made by a focus group though to be. Oh, look at that. That is just not appetizing at all. Does it taste any different? Do you get any, blueberries or any blue tone, fruit, anything?

Darren: 10:45 No, it’s just, I would just say it’s very mellow. Like this one is, it’s not sweet, which is good. I was a little worried that it’d be very sweet, but it’s just kind of, I would say kind of blend, which is not the most exuberant grape. Right. But everything is kind of toned down and you just kind of noticed the color

Natalie: 11:05 and do you think this is just a fad that will die out soon or

Darren: 11:10 is there anything to it? Yeah. Okay. I think so. I think it’s definitely not like Rose which has been growing and growing and growing for a good with good reason. I would say the Blue wine will be here today, gone tomorrow kind of thing.

So we’re into this sort of authenticity and transparency and everything. What do you think about ingredient labeling along that lines? Do you think wine should have, first of all, how many ingredients are there approximately in a wine? I know there are grapes and there’s alcohol and so on, but what’s in there? I thought it was just basically that.

Darren: 12:48 Well, there’s a lot of, there are a lot of things that can be added to wine and, some of them disappear in the, in the winemaking process and some of them stay there. I’m like declare them wine. They add things like bentonite clay or it’s in a glass, which is a fish protein or they might use a protein, different things that the very fine particles in the wine collect you and then they sink to the bottom. So there’s that. Then you can add acid, you can add 10 in powder, you can add enzymes, there are a lot of things that are available to my makers to add, you know, it would be nice to know what is in the wine.

Natalie: 13:26 Right. And do you think it would help and, and get help consumers to become more educated or might it add confusion and fear or would there just be a sort of getting used to it kind of phase and then it would be good?

Darren: 13:40 I think more information is good information. I think it would be helpful for consumers. It would probably be confusing for some. And I know you know like the ingredient labels on foods in cans right now. A lot of people don’t really read those or understand how they work, like portion sizes and things like that. So there’s always some contribution, but I don’t know and it’s my belief that the more information you can have about what you’re consuming, the better off you are.

Natalie: 14:04 I agree. That’s. And so again, related to this, what about health warnings? So we sometimes see, you know, don’t drink while you’re pregnant, but there doesn’t seem to be a health warning against underage drinking or excessive drinking or whatever. What do you think about health warnings on wine labels?

Darren: 14:22 I don’t know. I wouldn’t mind. Maybe I liked the idea of maybe a serving size suggestions. The how much wine to consume, although that, you know, the research keeps changing on that. So it’s hard to say what really is good. I don’t, I don’t, I don’t know about that warning. It’s, I could come or go with that one.

Natalie: 14:42 Yeah. I like the serving size thing because I think sometimes people don’t realize just how much you, how many units of alcohol they’re consuming. Like I’ve seen on some Australia back labels, you may have seen this Darren, but especially with the alcohol creeps up to 14, 15 percent. People think it’s five glasses of wine and a bottle, but it can be like eight or nine units or glasses of wine. It can be deceiving because of the higher alcohol.

Darren: 15:08 That’s really the big thing, right, is alcohol content and when I, in my column I always include it because there’s so much variance. Like you can have wines up to 15 and a half or 16 percent and then usually, you know, according to their rules, there’s a little leeway upper down like a half a percent too. So you can go from eight percent wine or seven percent wine, like a psycho or something like that to 15 percent. So one bottle of wine. The amount of alcohol you’re getting is very different depending on. Yeah,

Natalie: 15:36 it is extremely different. And I, I actually buy wine based on it being 13, 13, five or lower. I just, once it slips up to 14, I just find it’s like Ugh, it’s too much. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a wuss or whatever, but I just find it. It’s just all heat and alcohol. After that, Ron Bach has joined us from Elmira, Ontario. Welcome. Ron. So, we’ve talked about ingredient labeling., what other big trends are you seeing in the world of wine? What, what’s on your radar Darren, especially as a columnist for the Calgary Herald?

Darren: 16:20 Well, what are the things I’m interested in right now is the growth of can wine, like wines in aluminum cans, like a beer can, that’s sort of thing. It’s starting to see more and more of them and some of the wines in them are actually not, not too bad. Like I was reading the other day in Bonny Doon vineyards, has a line of canned wines now. And, and there, you know, decent lines and it’s very handy, especially in Alberta here, if you go into the mountains and you’re going to go for a hike and you’d like to have some wine, it’s a lot easier to carry a small aluminum can than a big heavy bottle. So. So that’s a growing thing I think. And then the whole box wine thing is still growing. Wines on tap, I love that idea, like in case, so you can get a glass in a restaurant and it doesn’t really matter when it was opened. It’ll still be fresh, so that’s nothing but a good thing.

Natalie: 17:09 Yeah, absolutely. I didn’t know how they kept that fresh. Is it, is it an airtight seal on these kegs? Like is it like the bag in a box

Darren: 17:18 kind of idea? It empties out, the oxygen is pushed out so then it doesn’t get oxidized or anything like that.

Natalie: 17:25 Oh Wow. and, Linda Michaels is saying also on labels. It would be nice to know the calories per serving.

Darren: 17:32 That’s true. Yeah. The more alcohol you have the more calories.

Natalie: 17:37 Exactly. Because you get calories from both alcohols am the sugar content, so even when it’s fermented to dryness, your calories are switching over onto the other side, the calories or it’s sorry, the alcohol side in terms of where they’re coming from.

Darren: 17:50 That’s true. And talking about trends, what are the trends that I do like as you’re seeing more lower alcohol wine, like not low alcohol, but winemakers are making wines at lower alcohol levels now twelfth you can get 12 percent whites and 11 percent whites. Even from Silicon Valley. I think I had a cab franc that was 12 percent. Wow. That’s nice to see. And they’re still ripe and everything, the fruit is still good and fresh and it’s just, you know, you don’t get some of that alcohol hit

Natalie: 18:18 absolutely. And this one, this, orange wine, I was noticing it was relatively low and just, oh, this orange wine which has packed with flavor nine point eight percent alcohol. Wow. Love it. And it’s dry. It’s not sweet because sometimes you’ll get low alcohol if they haven’t fermented to complete dryness like a German riesling says. But this completely dry. Nine point eight. And the other day I tasted a Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand, I think it was called the doctors by forest or something. And it was a Sauvignon blanc that was at nine percent. Wow. And it’s just like, it’s almost like cheating. It’s like you’ve got all the flavor, but none of the like heavy alcohol, which no one needs. I mean if you want that have vodka.

Darren: 19:04 Yeah, exactly. Especially for a weekday wine or something, right? Yeah, exactly. Exactly. You want to sleep well to

Natalie: 19:11 precisely. And so maybe along the lines of a natural wines and so on. You’re fascinated by yeast. So what does, we know yeast converts sugar in the Grapes to alcohol and CO2 which usually blows off unless you make it a bubbly. But what is it about use that interests you and how does it change the flavor of wines?

Darren: 19:35 Well yeast just add different flavors. The way the wine ferments, it develops different flavor profiles is really quite interesting that I had never thought. I thought the yeast was yeast then I learned that you can add a yeast to give a citrus flavor. You can add a yeast to give like a stone fruit flavor and all of these, , sort of different nodes. But sort of the, one of the trends now is using natural yeast in the air that’s happening quite alive in the Okanagan valley even they’re doing it quite a bit and I think it, it gives you a better representation of the area because the yeast is from that area. It’s not important from California or something like that from a big industrial factory. But it certainly riskier too because sometimes you know, the may not ferment the wine completely. It might stall in the middle of the fermentation and that sort of thing. So it’s a bit risky but I think it pays off in the end.

Natalie: 20:29 What did they have to do if it stalls?

Darren: 20:31 Oh they can. Sometimes they add a little bit of a, like an industrial yeast. They might add something to start it up again. And usually as a, as you use natural yeast over the years you develop the yeast sort of becomes heartier and, and then you don’t into those problems. But when you’re first transferring over to using natural yeast, it’s a little bit more touch and go

Natalie: 20:53 and. Okay. So the yeast is local and it can be floating in the air and that’s probably how first wines were made, but, but how does it sort of, reveal more of the place of the wine because it’s local. What else is happening? They’re like, how does that yeast translate into a better representation of the area?

Darren: 21:15 I imagine it, I don’t know exactly, but I think it’s gathering the whatever else is in the area like pollen and, all these, these different aspects of the vineyard or the region can sort of develop in the yeast because yeast is an amazing living thing. Like it’s always changing and mutating and that sort of thing. And, it just brings this unique character to the place.

Natalie: 21:41 Right? Absolutely. I wanted to ask you about a few things of just fun fads. I think they’re fads, but your take, I don’t know if you’ve had any of these, but a Pinot Freezio, ever had that?

Darren: 21:54 I have not had that, I get the brain freezes from like Slurpee and things. So I drink those sorts of things, but I think they’re very much a, it’s more like a cocktail

Natalie: 22:08 and I would say almost like making a spritzer with ice or whatever. Do you ever drop, Do you condone dropping an ice cube in wine?

Darren: 22:16 No, it’s, I’m a very liberal, you know, do whatever you like. Right? It’s, everyone has a different palette or different tastes like wine with an ice cube. That’s totally fine. That’s what you want to do.

Natalie: 22:30 Absolutely. And I was reading in some column recently where it actually doesn’t have enough to dilute the essential flavors and aromas in the wine. It actually, it won’t wreck your wine in other words. so there you go. A licensed, licensed to chill and it depends on how much do you drink it too, I guess, right? That’s true. Yes, that’s true. Sometimes it’s just not an issue if that wine isn’t around lung. but I’ve heard of like Pinot Freezio, a freestyling again, ice cubes and Riesling and frozen I guess was very 2017, but there you go. So why do you think, you mentioned this earlier, why do you think Rose is on the upswing? It’s a trending up kind of wine. Why do you think that is?

Darren: 23:17 Well, I think, the consumer started to notice that there’s good rosés out there, for many, many years when you said Rose, it was more like blush and white Zinfandel and those sorts of wines that were like sickly sweet and dark red in color and them tasted sort of manufactured, but you know, they’ve discovered the wines have a Provence, the roses from Provence where they’re dry and they have lots of flavors and they looked beautiful and so wineries are starting to follow that style and you see, you know, there are so many roses like they wineries are making rosés left and right because they’re selling really well now. And I think that’s outstanding. It’s a great food wine too, right? Like you can pair it with a lot of things and you can drink it all year and not just the summertime.

Natalie: 24:05 Absolutely. Yeah. There’s no labor day. Kind of a little on that one. You can keep drinking your rose and wearing white. Just wanted to say, deb, deb from Vancouver is here and she writes about wine as well. Paul Hollander says, as a beer brewer, there are many strains of yeast that add different flavors. So again, a nice comparison with beer artisanal beer and Paul says he’s used, used to have a chardonnay from northern Virginia that used wild yeast most, excellent. Dave Head says, Paul, I know you have. You now have a passport. Dave has made Paul and Honorary Canadian Niagara. Alright, there you go. so what, , what line trends do you think we’re going to see in the fall? Like is there anything other than the new vintages come out? Like is there anything that you look for in the fall with wine trends? Darren?

Darren: 25:03 I don’t really. Usually, you know, you start to go to a fuller bodied. Reds are like, right now we’re in this transition zone getting into cooler weather. So lower body whites, like Viognier, I like to drink, those. And a gamay usually play. Well, Pinot noir sort of in the fall before you hit the really cold temperatures. One of the things I’ll be watching for is when the red start coming out from the Okanagan from last year from 2016, 2017 vintage that was so smokey because yes, there was some concern that there could be a smoke taint in the grapes, but they didn’t know yet the last time I had heard. So when those come out and we’re seeing sort of another smokey year this year,

Natalie: 25:46 sadly. Yes, absolutely. , well we’ll see what happens there. And speaking of the Okanagan, one of the things that I know you’re interested in is the increasing number of sub appalachians. Tell us about that and why you think it’s kind of a marker for the maturity of the Canadian industry, the wine industry.

Darren: 26:05 Yeah, definitely. You know, like our wine industry in Canada is still very young when you look, you know, when you think in Georgia, they’ve been making wines for eight thousand years. We’ve been doing it really seriously with a vinifera grape for 25 years. So we’re growing, we’re getting more vineyards and now we’re starting to, you know, the wineries, they’re figuring out what grapes go grow best in what areas they’re subdividing a say, the Okanagan Valley. It used to be just Okanagan valley was your only descriptor and now you can have golden mile bench. They created that some gi, they call it geographic indicator a few years ago. And then last month they included Okanagan falls. They created one for that and Naramata bench. Now is, on the way it looks like, so, so the, so the consumer, when you’re buying a wine, if you see this, this, a label on this descriptor on the label, you have a better idea that all the grapes are from this area.

Darren: 27:01 So that area has this specific wine that’s good or a specific sort of note to the wine. You can look for it in that wine and know that it’ll probably be there. It’s just consistency and it’s about learning what grows best in your region. Like 20 years ago there would be, Cabernet Sauvignon are grown in the northern valley and Pinot noir down by a Soyuz. And now they’ve figured out a pinot noir is better in cooler climates that are growing up north and let’s do cab sav down by a Soyuz and the Golden Mile Bench. So it’s just the maturity and figuring things out.

Natalie: 27:35 Oh, awesome. And, along with those sub-Appalachians, we’ve got some new Appalachians based on styles rather than regions. in Ontario, there’s the orange wine that has just come in and that’s more based on a way of making these wines, right? Yeah, that’s right. That’s right. So you were describing that sort of letting the skins of, of the grape sit on the juice to give it that tinge and the Tannin and, and so on. But what’s the one that’s going on in Nova Scotia right now?

Darren: 28:03 Yeah, they’ve invented or started a, at Appalachian called Tidal Bay. And that is also related to sorting of how the wine is made. Not necessarily the region, it’s a Nova Scotia wine, but it has to use specific grapes and it has to have like a zingy bright acidity. And so they have a tasting panel that tastes these wines to make sure. And they sort of meet all of them, the paradigms or whatever, and it’s a good calling card for Nova Scotia people if they buy a bottle of Tidal Bay, they have an idea of what it will taste like.

Natalie: 28:33 Yeah, absolutely. It’s lovely. It’s just like ocean spray to me. It’s perfect with shellfish, like lobster, Tidal Bay, it’s still floral and aromatic. It’s, it’s lovely and light. Low alcohol definitely. Definitely very good. I don’t think they’re allowed to go over 11 percent or something like that. I, I can’t remember exactly if it’s really low, it’s definitely lower. Yup. Absolutely. Patty Hollander says she freezes grapes in the summer to chill a wine. That’s interesting.

Darren: 28:59 Oh, that’s a really cool idea.

Natalie: 29:00 That is a neat idea. Patty. Gail Johnson from St Catherine says with regards to orange wines being an old technique. I was wondering if there is a particular reason why it was abandoned like a while back and then now we’re coming back to it. Any thoughts on that?

Darren: 29:17 Yeah, I don’t really know. I think probably, as, as winemaking matured and they learn to how to control fermentation better and things like that, and you could cool wines, you can refrigerate wines so they would last longer. I think it probably just emerged that you took these new processes we have now, you know, like the stainless steel fermenters and you can keep your temperature and very exact. You can really control the, , with the winemaking experience from start to finish. , so, you know, probably more control was thought to be better, but now the radicals, radicals, but you know, the people that are going in the other direction and saying, well, maybe this is a good way too. So there’s enough room on, on the table for many different styles of wine.

Natalie: 30:02 Absolutely. I’m Linda Michaels is asking Darren, would you say that wines from eastern and central Europe are becoming trendy? So I guess we’re talking about Hungary, Bulgaria.

Darren: 30:14 I think so. yeah, there’s a lot more wines from those areas. They’ve good terroir. They just didn’t have investment, you know, especially in the former Soviet republics. They, , you know, communism was not good for wine. It’s like you make this, this is how you make it and that’s it, but now people are starting to invest in some of these areas and you’ve seen some very nice wines and really good price points too, right? Because the land is very cheap.

Natalie: 30:42 Yes. And speaking of communism and wine, Alan says, did I hear your weekday wine is vodka? No, no. Alan, you tuned in midway through my comment. I’m just saying there’s a slow relaxation with wine unlike vodka, but you go ahead and have some vodka, a Deborah or Deb is asking, what’s your favorite Vionnet, Darren?

Darren: 31:07 Oh, I really from Canada, I really loved the Viognier from a laughingstock. Oh, okay. To me it’s like a, it’s a picture perfect. Viognier in a, it shows the nice apricot and peach flavors. It’s quite full-bodied. It has a nice long finish. It’s always one of my go-to Viogniers

Darren: 32:07 Well, it’s a bit of an open question, but you know, there has been legalized cannabis in the US, for in some states for a while. So they’ve done research on that front and I was looking at a study in Colorado where they found that when they legalized cannabis, beer sales started to drop. So, maybe that’ll come here in the study, didn’t really look at wine in particular. It was more focused on beer, but I’m sure it will have an effect. And you can certainly see the wine companies are, are watching this, like last week, a couple of weeks ago, constellation brands, one of the biggest beverage companies in the world made a $5,000,000,000 investment in a Canadian cannabis company called canopy growth. Molson Coors is also a bought into this industry. So, you know, they know it’s coming and who knows, maybe we will see a cannabis-laced wine or beer or somewhere down the road.

Natalie: 33:03 Wine and weed.

Darren: 33:04 There we go. All in one.

Natalie: 33:07 That is, yeah, that’s going to be an interesting thing to see what, how, how all of this impacts, because there’s, you know, there’s pottable drinkable. wait a minute. Yes, there they’re doing beer with, I think cannabis, but there are pottables, there are edibles, there are all sorts of categories, but I think they have to sort it all out in terms of, the formats and who’s going to sell it and all the rest of it,

Darren: 33:33 they say that be the growth area, right? Like only certain companies can grow the cannabis, but once you buy it, it’s a little more liberal in what you can do with it. So they’ll find creative ways to sell it.

Natalie: 33:47 Yeah. I’ll bet a growth area. I’m sure he meant that. Sorry, I couldn’t resist Blair Robert Shaw has joined us and he is enjoying this conversation. Alright. So Darren just a few sort of off the cuff quick answers because I love to just ask our guests this. What advice would you give to your 30-year-old self?

Darren: 34:11 Probably to buy more quantity and less or buy more quantity. Quality and less quantity Gotcha. you know, I would taste a wine that I really liked and I went by, it’s like, oh, I need two or three bottles of that and then you find out it doesn’t really age that well and it’s been lost in the cellar and, it’s past its prime when you have it. So maybe buy less wine but better wine that’ll hold up for longer in the cellar.

Natalie: 34:38 Absolutely. And, this may be the same answer, I’m not sure, but what’s the best piece of wine advice you’ve ever received? Is there something different there?

Darren: 34:47 Oh, I would just say probably I was told to buy and drink what you like, right? Like, don’t be intimidated by wine or wine snob or anything like that. Its wine is a, it’s just a beverage to enjoy and, whatever you like is good. Everyone’s palate is different and, and wine tastes different to everybody. So go with what you know and what you like.

Natalie: 35:09 You Bet. You Bet. what do you think is the worst piece of advice people get about wine? What steers people in the wrong direction with this?

Darren: 35:18 Well, the sort of, the, idea that red wine should be at room temperature. That works 100 years ago when you lived in a, a wood-fired cottage and it was 16 degrees in there, but now are temperature controlled. Homes are much warmer and usually, it’s too warm for red wines. You get sort of flabby and they lose a lot of their, their backbone there. Structure, the acidity drops. , so I’d like to know if it’s a full-bodied red, I’ll put it in the fridge for 10 minutes or something like that. Just to take the edge off, if it’s a lighter red, like a Gamay, you can put it in even longer and it really does fresh enough the wine and bring it into balance.

Natalie: 35:58 Yeah, it really does. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Now, if you could share a bottle of wine with anyone living or dead, who would that be? Why and which one would you share?

Darren: 36:11 That’s a hard one. Maybe Veuve Clicquot she made so many, changed champagne, making a lot. She made a lot of, , she invented riddling basically, and he did a lot of amazing things just for those who don’t know.

Natalie: 36:29 Yeah. What does riddling just for those who don’t know,

Darren: 36:32 they put the bottles inverted and they slowly rotate them so that all the yeast collects in the neck of the wine and then they can reject it. And so you don’t have a bunch of particles in your wine. It was a big step for champagne and she did it, you know, as, as a widow and a woman back then, like you have to respect that so much. So she used her kitchen table. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

Natalie: 36:54 Resourceful. Yes. I’d like to meet her too and especially given the champagne is so good. That would be. She’d be a really interesting person to talk to you like she was kind of a tough old bird and her, her photos, she’s like very stern, but wow. She lived to her eighties and then. But she took over this company, the Veuve Clicquot House of Champagne when she was in her late twenties with a daughter Clementine, eight years old. Can you imagine? Turn of the century, Napoleonic wars. And she just stepped up and created one of the best luxury brands in the world. Yeah. And so impressive. Amazing. That’s a great answer. , I would love to meet with her to what’s the most useful wine gadget you’ve encountered or used?

Darren: 37:40 I’m a little mixed on wine gadgets, other than the corkscrew. It’s, I don’t know. I don’t really use a lot of gadgets.

Natalie: 37:48 Okay, fair enough. Do you get them for Christmas and then we give them

Darren: 37:52 sometimes, yeah, sometimes people do appreciate them, you know like there’s more techie people or whatever. I quite enjoy the next new thing, but I’m kind of a traditionalist I guess.

Natalie: 38:03 Yeah, absolutely. and is there a tip or something you could share with our audience? Something they can try with wine this week to kind of up their game or learn more about why?

Darren: 38:16 Well, I would, I would go back to the chilling thing, like if you’re having a red, just cool it down a little bit, see how it changes, maybe do it as an experiment, try it at room temperature, leave one glass out and then put the bottle in the fridge and then let its cool for a little bit for say 10 minutes and then pours a glass and then compare the two and just see it changes.

Natalie: 38:36 Great idea. It’s always good to learn side by side is the most, the best way to learn. Like people think, how do you get these differences? It’s because you know, you’re tasting six wines, whatever side by side. That’s how it jumps out at you. It’s not trying to one wine in isolation though. That is difficult. That’s. Yeah. so terrific. New world news from Time: Issues of Sexual Abuse and Animal Rights Dominate This Year’s Pamplona Bull Festival

(PAMPLONA, Spain) — The topics of sexual abuse and animal cruelty are dominating this year’s San Fermin festival in Pamplona, which kicks off Friday for nine days and eight nights of round-the-clock alcohol-soaked partying, traditional celebrations and dangerous bull runs.

It’s not a full-blown identity crisis yet, but the festival in northern Spain popularized by American novelist Ernest Hemingway and seen by critics as a macho proving ground with a violent streak is slowly adapting to the social awareness brought by a new generation.

Sexual assaults reported during the festival went from two in 2008 — the year a local woman was murdered after she refused to have sex with her killer — to 20 in 2016, when five men cornered an 18-year old, filmed themselves sexually attacking her and left after stealing her phone. The figures, from a study by the Public University of Navarra, rose to 22 last year amid growing public outrage.

“I don’t want my city to be known as a place for rampant sexual abuse or the torture of animals,” said Jana Uriz, 32, a local animal-rights activist among those demanding a “sexual-abuse free” festival.

Authorities have been able to identify suspects in nearly 95 percent of the cases in Pamplona, where the 2016 “Wolfpack case” — named after the WhatsApp group the perpetrators used to share their abuse videos — marked a tipping point that galvanized Spain’s own #MeToo movement.

Outrage fueled protests in the streets after a provincial court cleared the five men of rape charges and sentenced them to nine years behind bars on a lesser charge of sexual abuse. The government launched a revision of the punishments for sexual crimes, but when the men were released on bail last month pending a decision on their appeal, angry crowds again hit the streets.

Authorities in Pamplona responded by improving their handling of victims, stepping up police surveillance and training and launching 24-hour hotlines and a new mobile app that allows the instant reporting of abuse, including victims’ real-time locations.

But for some activists, the measures are not enough.

Naia Mira, 22, was among hundreds of women, most in their twenties, marching in Pamplona on Wednesday night, holding banners denouncing what they call a patriarchy that permeates all levels of life in Spain.

“Fear needs to change sides,” said Mira, adding that distrust in the judicial system is pushing some feminists to push for more self-defense.

The city’s left-wing mayor, Joseba Asiron, says that “Pamplona is leading the push against sexual aggression,” as officials reassure visitors that the festival is safe for both women and men to enjoy.

But Asiron, a 56-year-old historian whose term ends next spring, has also raised eyebrows ahead of this year’s festival by questioning the future of bullfights, a tradition at the core of the festival.

“I don’t envision a San Fermin festival without the bull runs, but I do see them happening one day without the corridas (bullfights),” he said.

Those remarks prompted angry bull breeders to answer that, without the bull fights, Asiron could forget about the bull runs. The Toro de Lidia foundation, which groups bull-related businesses and aficionados, claimed the industry injects 74 million euros ($86.5 million) into the city’s coffers each year.

Six bulls complete the 930-yard (850-meter) course to Pamplona’s bullring, where they are usually killed in televised bullfights during eight consecutive afternoons. Owners of private balconies overlooking the action charge spectators 140 euros ($164) per person to view the bulls and the runners careening down the town’s ancient streets.

“Once you open that door, there is no way back to save the running of the bulls without having them sacrificed in the bullring,” said Juan Cuesta, a 55-year-old Pamplona resident who looked on Thursday as over 100 animal rights activists protested the festival.

“I respect their opinion, but this is a wider debate that doesn’t need to come from politicians, but rather from society,” Cuesta added. “Right now, I don’t see the majority of people in Pamplona ready to give up on the DNA of San Fermin.”

The annual pro-animal rights protest on the eve of the festival used to go largely snubbed in Pamplona, but activists said more locals, especially younger people, have joined their campaigns in recent years as partial bans on bullfighting spread over dozens of Spanish towns.

Since the Spanish constitution protects corridas as part of the nation’s cultural heritage, new regulations usually aim at turning them into blood-free shows, banning any torment to the bull. They also forbid the consumption of alcohol and access for minors, while imposing anti-doping checks for animals and matadors.

“The idea is to make the corridas as boring as possible, by making them increasingly unappealing for bullfight promoters, so one day they can just fade away,” said Teodora Zgimblea, an activist with the Britain-based PETA animal rights group.

With the debate still in its infancy, it’s unclear whether the festival could survive without its most iconic symbol. But San Fermin has in the past survived calls for boycotts. Animal rights groups themselves don’t even dare suggest boycotting Pamplona because, according to Uriz, “we need to gain support step by step.”

The festival is also taking a strong position against sexual abuse. When national feminist groups urged participants in Pamplona’s Friday opening party to wear black in protest, local women’s-rights activists rebuked them, saying they had fought off sexual aggression for decades and would decide such matters on their own.

“Tomorrow, I will put on my white clothes and my red scarf around the neck,” Uriz said. “We have to go out and protest to change attitudes, but that doesn’t mean that I want to end my city’s festival altogether.”

6 Best Online TEFL Courses For English Teachers

If you hope to teach English online, getting your TEFL certification is a great idea. In fact, if you plan to teach English abroad in any capacity, getting your TEFL course online should be high on your to-do list.

I’ve been an online English teacher with VIPKID for 3 years, and in order to get that job, I took a TEFL course. The beauty of taking a TEFL course online is that you can do it while you’re working a full-time job, or while you’re travelling — you just need a wifi connection.

In this post, I’ll cover the basics of TEFL certification and the best TEFL courses for online English teachers.

What is a TEFL Certificate? 

A TEFL Certificate is a qualification that’s recognized internationally. It allows you to teach English abroad and is a crucial part of your teaching job application. 

There are a few types of TEFL certifications, and the acronyms can be a bit confusing!

1. TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language). This certification is used worldwide for teachers who want to teach English abroad to foreign students (or teach English online to foreign students). Example: A Canadian teaching English in China, or an American teaching English as a second language in Mexico.

2. TESL (Teach English as a Second Language). This certification is used by those who are teaching English in their own country to someone who needs to learn English as their second language. Example: A Brit teaching English to immigrants in England. 

3. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This certification is used for those who want to teach English either abroad as a foreign language, or in a country that speaks English as its native language. It’s similar to TESL (above), but isn’t as widely used or recognized.

4. CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The acronym doesn’t really work for this one! CELTA is the more expensive, “posh” version of TESOL, and is specific to Cambridge University.

Now that that’s out of the way, we’re going to focus on TEFL Certifications in this article. 

Having a TEFL certificate will allow you to apply for jobs teaching English in foreign countries or jobs teaching English online.

The typical curriculum covers teaching fundamentals, how to create lesson plans, and how to instruct students in English grammar, reading, speaking, and writing. 

Who Needs a TEFL Certificate? 

Anyone who plans to teach English abroad or teach English online should look into getting their TEFL certification. TEFL certificates are widely known and valued in the English teaching industry.

I got my TEFL certificate even though I already had a Master’s in Teaching and three years of formal classroom experience. I didn’t want to disqualify myself from a potential job just because I lacked the credential they required. 

Most in-person English teaching jobs around the world want teachers that have a TEFL certification. Even in places where a TEFL isn’t required, you’ll likely get a higher pay rate and have more employment options if you have one.

Will I Need a TEFL Certification to Teach Online?

That depends, but probably. A few years ago, online ESL companies were mainly concerned with hiring native English speakers. Now, with more regulations on online teaching and more competition between companies, requirements are stricter. 

It’s becoming common for online English companies to require that all teachers have a TEFL certificate.

China recently passed a law that says all online English teachers must either have a TEFL certification or a traditional teaching license.

Considering how many of the large online ESL companies cater to the Chinese market, you can imagine how many teachers were impacted.

But even if your online teaching company doesn’t require a TEFL certificate, it’s a good idea to get one anyway. With a TEFL certificate, you’ll have two main advantages: 

ESL Teaching Skills 

During your TEFL course online, you’ll learn best teaching practices that will improve your skills as an educator. 

A lot of people think “If I speak English, I can teach it, right?” But this isn’t the case. Teaching a language is very different from speaking a language. Some people who speak excellent English don’t make great teachers. 

Teaching, like any skill, must be learned and practiced. In a TEFL certification course, you’ll have the opportunity to do exactly that. 

Getting a TEFL certification is especially important if you don’t have a formal teaching background. You’ll want to gain as much practical teaching knowledge as possible so you can impress your future students and employers. 

Job Security

If for some reason your online ESL company changes their requirements, having your TEFL certification could be the difference between keeping your job and having to find another one. 

If you need to switch companies at some point during your online teaching career, having your TEFL certification already taken care of means you’ll have more options. 

Also, if you ever decided to transition into in-person teaching, you would already have the certification you need. Even if you have online teaching experience, most schools still need to see proof of your TEFL course completion for you to be eligible to teach. 

For me, having a TEFL certificate feels like a security net. I know that if I’m ever unable to teach online for some reason, I can use my TEFL certificate to get a job teaching abroad instead. Having TEFL credentials only improves your choices.

Which TEFL Course Should I Take?

That’s a great question! A quick google search will show you that there are dozens of TEFL courses out there, so it can be difficult to know which one is best for you. There are a few things to consider when making your decision.

Accreditation 

In order for your TEFL certification to have any meaning, it needs to be accredited. 

You may have seen ads on discount websites for $5 TEFL courses or even websites offering Free TEFL courses. Unfortunately, these usually are not accredited and won’t do you much good when it’s time to get hired. 

While you might be able to get away with an unaccredited TEFL course with some uninformed employers, I wouldn’t recommend doing that. It’s not worth risking your job if someone discovered that your certification wasn’t legitimate.

Taking a TEFL course that has been accredited means that a third party approved the curriculum and teaching methodologies of the course. You’ll know for sure that what you’re learning is correct and up to date. This helps you become a more effective English teacher in the long run.

Number Of Hours 

When you start looking into TEFL courses, you’ll see the number of hours for the course. This represents the number of hours you will study to get the certification. In general, you want a course that offers at least 120 hours.

Now, if you do a self-paced online TEFL course, there’s a very good chance you’ll finish in less than 120 hours. But that 120-hour course will cover much more content than a 40-hour or 60-hour course. Most TEFL employers want to see the 120-hour certificate. 

Online, In-Person, and Combination Courses

TEFL courses fall into three categories: online, in-person, and hybrid courses that combine the two.

Online TEFL Courses: Online TEFL courses are great if you need schedule and location flexibility.

Before I started teaching online and travelling, I did an online TEFL course because it worked out well with my job. I was able to go to work during the day and complete my TEFL course online in the evenings and on weekends. 

Online TEFL courses are often self-paced and may take longer to complete than in-person TEFL courses. They are also usually less expensive. 

The downside of choosing an online TEFL course is that you won’t get real-time demonstrations and feedback on your teaching. While your course might include video content, there’s no replacement for actually standing in front of people and applying the material.

This is where In-Person TEFL courses shine.

In-Person TEFL Courses: With an in-person course, you’ll do all your training and practical student teaching during a shorter time frame, usually a few weeks. You can also choose to do your TEFL training abroad, meaning you’ll get to explore a new place while learning new skills. 

In-person TEFL courses are better for those who want to get TEFL certified as soon as possible. You’ll also leave with more experience teaching in real life.

In-person TEFL courses are usually more expensive. The benefit is that you’ll be ready to start teaching sooner, have more practical experience, experience living in a new country, receive job placement assistance in that country afterward, and meet other aspiring TEFL teachers in your class. Plus, your accommodation and some excursions and activities are also included.

Hybrid Or Combination Courses: The third option is to combine online and in-person elements into a hybrid or combination class. With these class formats, you’ll do most of the written work online independently.

Then, your TEFL company will arrange opportunities for you to do in-person teaching days, possibly with other students. This means you’ll get a chance to apply what you’ve learned and receive feedback before applying for teaching jobs. 

Practicum Teaching

Some TEFL courses will also include a practical teaching component. During your practicum, you will either practice teaching a lesson to real students or observe English lessons taught by established teachers. 

Practicum experience can also be tutoring one-on-one, student teaching, or volunteering with a local organization that offers English classes. 

Here’s how this plays out in different TEFL courses:

In-Person TEFL Courses: The course arranges the practical teaching opportunity for you. You will observe and practice teach during your in-person TEFL course.

PAMPLONA, Spain  | Feminists, animal rights groups reshape Pamplona bull fest

PAMPLONA, Spain  — The topics of sexual abuse and animal cruelty are dominating this year’s San Fermin festival in Pamplona, which kicks off Friday for nine days and eight nights of round-the-clock alcohol-soaked partying, traditional celebrations and dangerous bull runs.

It’s not a full-blown identity crisis yet, but the festival in northern Spain popularized by American novelist Ernest Hemingway and seen by critics as a macho proving ground with a violent streak is slowly adapting to the social awareness brought by a new generation.

Sexual assaults reported during the festival went from two in 2008 — the year a local woman was murdered after she refused to have sex with her killer — to 20 in 2016, when five men cornered an 18-year old, filmed themselves sexually attacking her and left after stealing her phone. The figures, from a study by the Public University of Navarra, rose to 22 last year amid growing public outrage.

“I don’t want my city to be known as a place for rampant sexual abuse or the torture of animals,” said Jana Uriz, 32, a local animal-rights activist among those demanding a “sexual-abuse free” festival.

Authorities have been able to identify suspects in nearly 95 percent of the cases in Pamplona, where the 2016 “Wolfpack case” — named after the WhatsApp group the perpetrators used to share their abuse videos — marked a tipping point that galvanized Spain’s own #MeToo movement.

Outrage fueled protests in the streets after a provincial court cleared the five men of rape charges and sentenced them to nine years behind bars on a lesser charge of sexual abuse. The government launched a revision of the punishments for sexual crimes, but when the men were released on bail last month pending a decision on their appeal, angry crowds again hit the streets.

Authorities in Pamplona responded by improving their handling of victims, stepping up police surveillance and training and launching 24-hour hotlines and a new mobile app that allows the instant reporting of abuse, including victims’ real-time locations.

But for some activists, the measures are not enough.

Naia Mira, 22, was among hundreds of women, most in their twenties, marching in Pamplona on Wednesday night, holding banners denouncing what they call a patriarchy that permeates all levels of life in Spain.

“Fear needs to change sides,” said Mira, adding that distrust in the judicial system is pushing some feminists to push for more self-defense.

The city’s left-wing mayor, Joseba Asiron, says that “Pamplona is leading the push against sexual aggression,” as officials reassure visitors that the festival is safe for both women and men to enjoy.

But Asiron, a 56-year-old historian whose term ends next spring, has also raised eyebrows ahead of this year’s festival by questioning the future of bullfights, a tradition at the core of the festival.

“I don’t envision a San Fermin festival without the bull runs, but I do see them happening one day without the corridas (bullfights),” he said.

Those remarks prompted angry bull breeders to answer that, without the bull fights, Asiron could forget about the bull runs. The Toro de Lidia foundation, which groups bull-related businesses and aficionados, claimed the industry injects 74 million euros ($86.5 million) into the city’s coffers each year.

Six bulls complete the 930-yard (850-meter) course to Pamplona’s bullring, where they are usually killed in televised bullfights during eight consecutive afternoons. Owners of private balconies overlooking the action charge spectators 140 euros ($164) per person to view the bulls and the runners careening down the town’s ancient streets.

“Once you open that door, there is no way back to save the running of the bulls without having them sacrificed in the bullring,” said Juan Cuesta, a 55-year-old Pamplona resident who looked on Thursday as over 100 animal rights activists protested the festival.

“I respect their opinion, but this is a wider debate that doesn’t need to come from politicians, but rather from society,” Cuesta added. “Right now, I don’t see the majority of people in Pamplona ready to give up on the DNA of San Fermin.”

The annual pro-animal rights protest on the eve of the festival used to go largely snubbed in Pamplona, but activists said more locals, especially younger people, have joined their campaigns in recent years as partial bans on bullfighting spread over dozens of Spanish towns.

Since the Spanish constitution protects corridas as part of the nation’s cultural heritage, new regulations usually aim at turning them into blood-free shows, banning any torment to the bull. They also forbid the consumption of alcohol and access for minors, while imposing anti-doping checks for animals and matadors.

“The idea is to make the corridas as boring as possible, by making them increasingly unappealing for bullfight promoters, so one day they can just fade away,” said Teodora Zgimblea, an activist with the Britain-based PETA animal rights group.

With the debate still in its infancy, it’s unclear whether the festival could survive without its most iconic symbol. But San Fermin has in the past survived calls for boycotts. Animal rights groups themselves don’t even dare suggest boycotting Pamplona because, according to Uriz, “we need to gain support step by step.”

The festival is also taking a strong position against sexual abuse. When national feminist groups urged participants in Pamplona’s Friday opening party to wear black in protest, local women’s-rights activists rebuked them, saying they had fought off sexual aggression for decades and would decide such matters on their own.

“Tomorrow, I will put on my white clothes and my red scarf around the neck,” Uriz said. “We have to go out and protest to change attitudes, but that doesn’t mean that I want to end my city’s festival altogether.”
