Hey Diary - Part 3

PART 1 and PART 2 of the Hey Diary Series

I tried my best to not fall asleep, scared by what may happen if I do. The whole night, I couldn’t get my head off: 1.) The possibility that reality wont change and Keith and the others might come back to their right senses while remembering whatever they did to themselves, 2.) The possibility that nothing will happen and Keith will keep those feelings for me throughout the whole year in school, and 3.) The fact that Keith gave me a blowjob.

I’ve tossed around the bed all night, remembering how Keith looked at me while he suck me off, how he kissed me and how his tongue intertwined with mine, and no, although I may be getting hard, I’m still putting a blame to myself. This isn’t supposed to happen. I know this would be against what Keith wanted. Even though he had been bullying me since the first day, I still have my morals. I shouldn’t have messed with him, and who knows what Peter and Tom did? I do remember including them in the changes.

Anyway, I still need to go to school and find out. I quickly took a short shower to get rid of my smell, wore my shirt and a jacket, grabbed my bag then proceeded to school.

Arriving at the school, right before I enter our building, someone pulled me by the arm. It was a sudden pull and it was very strong so I was just lead to wherever.

It was Keith, obviously mad as he was gripping my wrist, hard. I grunted and tried to tell him to stop, but he was ignoring me and continued pulling me to the varsity’s locker room. He pushed me against one locker with both arms blocking both directions I can use as an escape. He stared at me but I can’t figure out what kind of face is he making. He looks so mad but when I try to stare into his eyes, he would look soft and would look away. He would occasionally swallow hard but will shake his head afterwards.

“What,” Keith started. “What have you done to me, asshole?” He said, stuttering on the cuss as if he couldn’t bare to call me that anymore. I couldn’t answer so he asked me one more time. “What did you do?!” This time, it was much more of a yell.

“Did you drug me? Did you cast a spell on me? What did you fucking do?!”

Keith looked like as if he’s about to cry. He crumbled to the floor, both arms leaning on my legs as he try to hold himself why crying.

“I’m... sorry...” is my only reply. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to tell him about the Diary App. I don’t even know what he will do after he learn about the truth.

I just let Keith cry all the tears in front of me. Somehow a little satisfied to get a revenge on him, but I’m still very mad at myself for doing this to him.

“Right after that night, when I came back home, I couldn’t help myself but to think about you. I couldn’t stop thinking about how good you look, how cute you looked when you made that lewd face while I was blowing you- Fuck! I’m not fucking gay! I knew that when I woke up. I remembered everything, but everything is mixed up! I can’t even tell which is true among these memories in my head. I wanted to get mad at you, but I can’t. Instead of getting so furious, I would resort to picturing you naked, tied up on my bed, and the next thing I’ll know I’m already jacking off! What the fuck did you do to me, Felix!”

I let Kieth finish what he was saying in between sobs. Apparently, I learned a new thing about the Diary App. Reality wont change if I don’t take the picture and in Keith’s case, when he woke up, he came back to his senses, but the changes are still in effect. At this point, I have no idea what I’ll do with Keith. I just pulled Keith up and told him to stand up properly. Keith placed his arms down and he looked at me, frowning, looking so fragile as if he’s about to have another breakdown in a few seconds. Still sobbing, he suddenly hugged me.

“Please. I’m telling you now, whatever I said last night about picking on you. I really meant that. I am very sorry about what I did to you. It’s just that...” He cut himself. “You seemed to get so much attention while I do not. I’ll admit that I was so jealous of you, but please, whatever the way, please return me back. I don’t want these feelings lingering around my body. Please.”

I can feel his tears run through my clothes onto my skin. Keith has been crying so much. I took a deep breathe and pushed him off my body.

“Fine. I really am sorry too for doing this to you, but do you really promise you won’t do that anymore?” I looked at him straight in the eyes.

“Damn it. Stop looking at me like that. You’re making me hard.” Keith looked away. “I promise. I really do.”

I laughed at him and pulled out my new phone and boot up the Diary App. Curiously, Keith leaned over to look at my phone. I then clicked on the previous log I have typed in.

“What’s that?” Keith asked. “What are you doing?”

“This is a Diary App. The one I used to change you.” I replied. I then started scrolling about, looking for any clue to know how to revert him back. “To be honest, I don’t really know how to turn you back.”

“What the fuck?” He looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed, but then he quickly looked away.

“I’m sorry, okay? I just got this phone the day you stole my old one.”

“Right.” Keith then sat down in front of me.

I tried all my best to look for a guide in the app that could tell me what to do. I could tell Keith’s staring at me body, though. He would sometimes lick his lips as he do so. I tried my best to focus on my phone and find what I need.

In a few while, I saw a help button at the very bottom of the page, in very small texts. I clicked it and a popup showed up. I finally found the guide and so I scrolled down to find just what I need for the moment.

How to revert changes.

Unlike making changes, reverting people back to their former state does not require sleeping to make the changes permanent.

In order to revert people back, hold on the log you want to remove, wait about 3 seconds until another popup shows up. You will be given an option between Archive and Delete. Click Delete, then Accept, and you’re done.

The process should happen in instant.

With that, I went to my recent log, held it and pressed delete.

“Hey, Keith I think-”

I cut myself right after I saw Keith jerking off in front of me. He started moaning loud, reaching his climax, until his eyes suddenly opened wide. He stopped himself, leaving himself on the edge, then he quickly wore his boxers and pants back. His cheeks red. He then faced the other way.

“I... I didn’t mean to...” Keith said. “It was because I couldn’t help myself a few seconds ago.”

“So I guess, you’re back to yourself?” I asked.

“Yeah I guess, I’m back.” Keith replied, then he went quiet, “I’m... back...” He faced me and hugged me tight. “I’m back! Thank you so much, Felix!”

“H-Hey, hey! I can’t breathe!” I said in between laugh. Then we suddenly realized what we were doing.

Kieth quickly moved away from me and scratched his head. As for me, I tried to distract myself by looking down at my phone. Keith took a deep breath and tired to speak.

“Hey, whatever happened last night, let’s keep that to ourselves, okay? I mean, I have nothing against gay people, if you’re somehow one of them, I just can’t see myself doing that, and about that false rumor I spread, that’s just to ruin your reputation. I didn’t intend to show any homophobia.”

“Deal.” I smiled.

Keith gave me his hand and I shook it. He took a hard grip on mine and he smiled back, a hint that our war is over.

We started walking towards our classroom. After what happened, Keith suddenly became talkative to me, and as for me, I started to enjoy his company. He talked a lot about sports, thinking that I could relate because he thought I play ball too. I guess that’s because of this new life of mine. Nevertheless, I still find him fun.

“Hey, by the way.” Keith suddenly changed the topic and pointed at my phone. “Where did you get that, anyway?”

“Well... In a store... It’s very complicated to explain but I’m sure that shop is somewhat magic.” I replied.

“I would say I don’t want to believe that, but experiencing what happened to me previously, that seems possible.” He remarked.

Keith then pushed his chest out and took a long deep breath.

“Why? Do you have something in mind?” I asked.

“Well... What else can it do?”

Trying to avoid telling him about my former self, I explained him what the app can do. From age change to racial change to even the impossible. He seemed so impressed, like a kid watching those Harry Potter movies for the first time. He started to show so much interest with the app. Meanwhile, I have already placed my trust on him.

“Can you like... Turn me into something?” Keith asked, with a closed lip grin. “I mean aside from turning me gay. Can you maybe make me older, or younger.”

“What do you exactly have in mind?”

We stopped walking with Keith thinking with his finger on his head. A few seconds later, he snapped and pointed at me.

“Make me old enough to be a teacher for a day.”

We stared at each other. I gripped my phone hard. Keith then gave me a bright smile.

This was bad, this was very very bad. Everyone in the island knew that Pan could take care of himself, so it came as no surprise to us when he said he was going out to attend to some buisness. Minutes had ticked by, slowly turning into hours as we anxiously awaited our leaders return, but he never came. Felix stood on a rock, towering over a group of worried and panicking lost boys, and me of course.

"Everyone calm down it's going to be ok!" He yelled above the boy's loud voices, "I'm going to send out a few of you to search for Pan, we all know he's capable of looking after himself and he can't have gone far other wise he would've taken magic beans with him!"

I sit back and watch the scene before me unfold, thinking of the many possible places Pan could be hiding. The mermaid lagoon? Hot springs? His thinking tree? Skull rock? No, whenever Pan went somewhere he was always back in time, so what's the hold up?

"I want to come with you." I demanded, looking into the second in commands piercing blue eyes.

His eyes flickered as if he were fighting a war inside his head, trying to debate weather or not it was a good idea to let me come with him. Pan is one of my friends too, Felix knows I wont stop until I find him.

The tall boy sighs in defeat, "Fine you can come, but stay close to me. God knows what Pan will do if you get hurt, or worse, killed."

I gave him a quick nod before following him and the other boys deep into the dark jungle.

~Pan's P.O.V~

"Shadow!" I yelled, hoping that the dark, eerie figure which I had been searching for would swoop down to greet me.

"Yes." It's dark voice echoed round the forest.

"Finally, I need your help with... something." I whispered after doing a quick scam of the area, making sure for the hundredth time that no one was lurking and listening.

I had leaned in closer, peering into the demons glowing yellow eyes before talking.

"I want to get closer to Y/n, but so far nothing's worked." Sighing in defeat I everted my gaze, distracting myself with the lush green plants and trees which were littered around my island.

I didn't have to look at him to see the smirk that was plastered on his face, my blood began to boil as I grew impatient. Yet the shadow remained silent, trapping his thoughts in his mind and not letting them out.

"Well," I snapped "what do I have to do?"

"I may have something in mind." His scratchy voice travel to my ears before a puff of green smoke swirled around my body, engulfing me like it had done so many times before.

Once the smoke had cleared, floating away with the wind the shadow circled me, like an eagle surrounding it's prey before going in for the kill.

"Perfect." He smirked before flying off.

I could feel the confused expression etch it's way onto my face, what was perfect? Curious to see what the shadow had done to me, I hopped over tree roots and fallen logs, searching for the nearest pond. Nothing felt different apart from my height, I was slightly smaller than usual and my clothes were a little more baggy. I could hear the fait trickles of water as tiny fish swam around in the crystal clear pond. Peering down I could see my reflection stare back at me, but I wasn’t the king of Neverland anymore... I was a girl.

My jaw hurt from how hard I was gritting my teeth, no way, this wasn’t happening. I couldn’t look away, why did it have to be this?

“Hello?” A familiar voice startled me, causing me to look up at him.

“Felix?” I could feel my cheeks heat up and turn a dark shade of red, out of all the people on the island it had to be Felix who sees me this way.

The boy looked at me, confused, "do I know you?" He inquired.

"It's me." I voiced, not fully wanting to be in this situation, "Pan."

Felix stared back at me, shock and disbelief crawled up onto his sharp features before his eyes lit up and he began to bellow with laughter. Tears trickled down from his icy eyes as my hand balled into fists of rage, my knuckles turned white and nails dug into the palm of my hand.

"I-I'm sorry." He explained whipping a few tears away before erupting into yet another fit of laughter, "H-how did this even happen?"

I went over every detail, telling him why I was a girl and how it came about.

"So.... let me get this straight", he said for the hundredth time, "You did this to get closer to Y/n?"

"Yes." I replied, rather embarrassed but I wouldn't let it show.

"Y/n!" He roars, screening every bird of out the evergreen tree which enclosed us.

I slapped my hand over the boys mouth, but not fast enough so that I couldn't see the faint smirk which he was trying to hide. My knuckles turned white as my grip tightened around his lips.

"What the he'll do you think you're doing?" I hiss at him in hushed tones.

"I'm helping." He shrugged.

Just then her head popped around the corner, her h/l h/c flowed down and her e/c orbs stared at with with amazement and excitement. Slowly, she began to stalk towards me, much like the way someone would approach a startled deer.

"Hello." Her voice was sweet and soft, much like honey.

"This is Phoebe," Felix introduced.

Phoebe..... really? That's the name that he decided to go with.

"Welcome to Neverland." She said with a slight smile playing on her pink lips, she was so cute even when she wasn't trying to be.

"Would you mind looking after her?" My second in command asked, I smirked at myself, now understamd what the tall boy was getting at, "just until we find Pan."

"Sure." She happily obliged, "follow me."

Without a second thought I began to follow her deep into the dark jungle. Even though I was smaller than I was before, I was still tall enough to see over the girls head as she bounced with every step. Her big brown boots crunched leaves and twigs under foot, occasionally she would trip on a fallen log before her face would turn a bright shade of red and an awkwardly cute giggle would pass past her lips.

~Your P.O.V~

I tried my best not to embarrass myself in front of our new arrival, but my mind kept wondering back to Pan.

Where was he?

As a result of not paying attention I would trip over fallen logs and stuck out tree roots, undoubtedly making Pheobe think I was a weakling like the boys did whenever I slipped up. I would play it off with an awkward laugh and try my best to carry on without thinking twice about it.

"So.... where did you come from?" I inquired, trying to clear a path for her, "it's not everyday you see girls on this island, I'm the only one besides Tink so I'm really glad your here."

She laughed at my comment but still failed to answer my question.

"Normally Pan would be showing you around but he seems to have gone missing, that's why we've been wondering around the Jungle, we were trying to find him." I voiced.

"Oh," her voice was quite and soft, not at all what I would've expected from her sharp features, "who's Pan?"

"He's our leader." I replied with a shrug, "he never normally disappears like this and when he does he's always back in time but he's failed to show, so the boys are searching for him."

"Is he nice?" Phoebe asked.

"Well...... that depends." I spoke, hoping the clueless girl would leave it at that.

"On what?" She chimed innocently.

Oh, if only she knew. Pan could be an arrogant ass at times, especially when things hadn't gone his way. He could be controlling, pathogenic and phycotic at times, but then there was the other side of him, the sweeter side of him. Pan didn't like anyone to see that side of him but for some reason he was more open around me. He was a lot calmer, nicer and more considerate, he would help me out with training, take me places and whenever he went away he would always bring me something back.

And it was because of all of those things I realised I was in love with him, I wasn't sure exactly when it happened, but I definitely know that it did. I started to read into things more, did he bring me stuff back because he felt the same way about me, did he help me out with training because he cared, did he take me places around the island because he wanted to spend more of his time with me?

"He's... great. I really like him at least, he's a good leader and takes care of us." I replied to the girls questions.

She gave me a small smile and looked at the floor as we carried on walking.

"We're here." I chimed before stepping into camp.

I turned to face the girl but noticed something... off. She wasn't looking around in wonder like I had done, or like other new boys had done, it was as if she didn't care or she had already seen what she wanted.

"Well try not to get too excited about it." I laughed.

"Oh sorry," she smiled "it looks great, I just have a lot on my mind right now."

"I get it, don't worry, you must have a lot of questions."

"Just a few." The stranger replied.

I spent the rest of the day showing her the ropes and she soon caught on, it was almost like she had done this many times before, maybe in her homeland.

I rather enjoyed having a girl on the island, the boys were great but they didn't understand the appeal of late night talks and gossip. Her presents made me forget about Pan, I was still worried about him but now I had someone to distract me.

The sun had long since set on the island, coating it in darkness as the stars shone brightly in the sky. The boys that Felix had sent out had not yet come back and I was left waiting for them.

I stared into the flames of fire, hoping that they could give me an answer, was he ok? Is he even still...alive? As much. as I didn't want to think about that possibility it still crossed my mind many times. I don't know what I would do without that boy, I haven't been in the island for very long, maybe eight months or so but me and Pan still made a lot of memories.

Like the time he took me to mermaid lagoon, I wouldn't stop pestering him to take me since I found out there were even mermaids on the island. At first he refused, telling countless times how dangerous they were and that I was probably going to get hurt but I shrugged him off and just carried on begging until he gave in. We walked for hours, or for what felt like hours until we finally reached the crystal blue waters. When we got there I was awe struck, I had never seen anything like it in my life. Fish happily swam around, causing ripples to break out and spread to the edges of the lagoon.

Shorty after we arrived my face turned a deep shade of red as out the corner of my eye I could see Pan slipping his shirt off.

"Come on love." He said using the cute Nick name he gave me, he probably never gave it a second thought but it gave me butterflys, "You were the one who insisted we came swimming here."

My words choked up in my throat as I became flustered, unable to tear my eyes away from him.

"Like what you see darling?" He cockily spoke, "you've been staring at me for an awfully long time."

"N-no." I had shot back in a defensive tone, "You repluse me." I joked.

"Sure I do." He sent a wink my way before diving in.

Hesitantly, I slipped of my cloak and the rest of my clothes, leaving me almost exposed before jumping in. I remember the cold water engulfing my warm skin.

"Pan...." I had called out to him.

His head popped up above the surface, water trickled down is porcelain skin as he flipped his dipping hair out of his face.

"What is it, love?"

"Didn't you say the mermaids were going to drown us?" I had worryingly asked him

"Don't worry darling, they won't come near you as long as I'm around." His words were that of a protective boyfriend, at least that's what it seemed like to me.

We had a lot of fun that day, splashing about in the cool lagoon and having fun. That was until something grabbed my ankles, forcing me under the water. My lungs filled with salty liquid as I thrashed about trying my hardest to get free. That's when I felt strong arms wrapp around my small frame, kicking whatever creature had a hold of me until it loaned it's grip and we swam up to the surface.

I coughed and splattered, yet Pan still didn't let go of me. Comfortingly stroking my wet hair and pulling me towards his face chest.

"I've got you." He had whispered, he was probably just trying to be supportive but if he had saw my face he would've noticed the pink dust which coated my cheeks.

I remembered another time, when we were training, I hadn't quite grasped archery so he offered to help me whenever he had time too.

We hadnt even been there five minutes before he started pointing out all the things I was doing wrong.

"No hold it higher." He said to me with a wide grin.

"Like this?"

"No." He laughed, "a little lower."

I followed his instructions as best I could lowered my aim a tiny amount.

"Oh for the love of god." He laughed before marching towards me.

He placed his hands on mine while he stood behind me, he was only trying to help out but I could feel my breath hitch in my throat.

"Like this." He whispered softly in my ear, I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand tall and proud as he did so.

He guided me, his big hands completely engulfing my smaller ones before letting the arrow fly. It zoomed through the air before butting itself slap bang in the middle of the target.

"Thanks." My voice came out small and weak, I could feel the cheeky smirk in his face as he let out a low chuckle, giving me shivers.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when a certain blonde boy stalked back into camp, I rushed to My feet and quickly caught up with him.

"Felix, wait!" I yelled, by the time I got to him I was out of breath, "i take it you didnt find him?"

"No, not yet." He said, but something didn't seem quite right, I could tell something was off I just didn't know what.

Before I could ask him anymore questions he walked off quickly, flinging the flaps to his tent open.

"Y/n." Phoebe called out, "Come sit down."

I gave her a small nod before taking a seat next to her.

"What's got you in such a bad mood all of a sudden?" She inquired.

"I've been like this the whole day." I said as a matter of factly.

"That's not true, before you were wearing the biggest smile I had even seen."

I could feel my cheeks heat up, "What - No I wasn't."

She gave me a knowing smile as if she could read my mind, "Come on, who is he."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." I told her, trying to change the subject.

Her eyebrows raised, much like Pan's would. It would be nice to get it off my chest, I've never told anyone, it might do me some good and Phoebe seems nice enough.

"Fine." I huffed, "I was thinking about....Pan."

"You were?" The tone changed from a nosy one to a cocky one.

"Yes ok? I've liked him for ages now but I know that her never feel the same so I guess it doesn't matter." I spoke.

"But it does matter, when you find him you'll have to tell him. I guarantee he will feel the same." She insisted.

"No I can't-"

"You have to, I'm not taking no for an answer." This girl really had her mind made up.

"Fine, I'll sleep on it and then help the boys search." I said before heading to my tent and turning in for the night.

The next day I got ready to head out and do exactly what I told Phoebe I was going to do.

I stepped out of my tent-

"Pan!?" I practically screamed, there he was sitting down on a log next to the dying embers of last night's bonfire "where the hell have you been?"

"Save the questions for later, love." He spoke as he made his way towards me, "a little birdy said you have something to tell me."

Ok, nows my chance.

"I like you, I've liked your for a while now but I've been too scared to tell you because I have a fear of rejection and I don't want things to get awkward." I puffed out all in one breath, hoping that he hasn't cought a single word of it.

A smirk crept it's way on to his lips as I felt my blood run cold, no, he couldn't have understood what I said. His string arms slithered around my wait, pulling me closer be closing the gap between our lips.

I wanted time to stand still, his lips were so soft and molded perfectly with mine. My hands found there way into his hair, lacing then through his soft chestnut brown locks. We stood there for what felt like a life time, our lips moving in sync before he pulled away, resting his forehead against mine.

"I like you two, love." He whispered before leaning in for another kiss.

"Wait." I stopped his, placing a finger on his mouth causing his eyes to shoot back open, "I have to tell Phoebe about this."

"You see..." he began, awkwardly laughing while rubbing the back of his neck, "about that love....."

We're Expecting!

What next?

I wanted to log our journey to parenthood because it started long before we took a positive pregnancy test. It is amazing how God prepares your heart to become a parent. Timing is always perfect when God is in control and looking back on our married life together we can see God's hand in preparation for this new chapter of our lives.

We got married in March of 2013. On mother's day of that same year we believed there was a chance I could be pregnant. I remember crying on the couch in our tiny little apartment thinking there was no way I was ready to be a mother. I called byron and asked him to pick up a pregnancy test on his way home. Immediately my mind began to race. We had so many things we wanted to do as a young married couple. We had even made a list of all the places we wanted to go and the adventures we had hoped to take before we would become parents. We were enjoying being newlyweds and I laid there processing how much our lives would change if our suspicions were true. Byron came home from work that night with a three pack of pregnancy tests. He hugged me for a long time and said either way we would be just fine. The test was negative and we both breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Fast forward several months. December of 2014 we were heading to Disneyland- one of the places on our list of things to do before babies. We had almost been married for 2 years and we had accomplished so many things that we wanted to before we would become parents. When unpacking in our room in anaheim, I realized that I had forgotten my birth control pills. For a minute I went into panic mode. I think we were both equally freaking out that I would not have my pills for more than a week. But the more we talked about it, the more it made sense. The past two years had been so amazing and we were about to go on one of the last trips on our before baby list. So we decided we would not prevent pregnancy anymore. We trusted that God's timing was perfect and when it was time we would have a baby!

Little did we know how long that process would drag on. Our focus shifted at some point. At first we weren’t “preventing it” but that quickly moved to we wanted it so bad. Mother's day rolled around again in 2015 and we weren’t pregnant. Lots of pregnancy tests had been taken and so many false tests had made it hard to believe that we would ever become pregnant. I remember being sad on mothers day for a completely different reason. I wanted to be a mother. I hadn't really told anyone that because I didn’t want the outside pressure of people knowing we had been trying for a baby. Of course we got questions all the time about when we would be having babies. We played aloof like we werent even trying- weren’t even sure we would want that. Deep down both of us wanted to be parents. Both of us questioning if we could conceive. And now both of us beginning to question God's timing.

So we made other big kid decisions and we bought a house. July of 2015 we officially became homeowners. 3 bedrooms- 2 bathrooms- perfect scenario to start a family. We thought maybe this was the step we needed to take so that we could grow our little family. And of course more people started asking when we would start trying to have babies. It felt too shameful to tell people that we had been “trying” since December of the previous year.

We faced plenty of other obstacles. That same summer that we bought a house, Byron was working Cal Fire and gone for the majority of the summer. This caused plenty of stress and border-line resentment because I thought this was one of the reasons we were unable to make a baby.

Later that fall we got a dog. The dog gave us something to care for together and alleviated some of the pressure we had been putting on ourselves to have a baby. She took so much time and energy that we were all consumed with our new puppy for probably 6 months.

In 2016 we genuinely considered the fact that we may not be able to have children. I asked my doctor if there was a chance I had anything that might prevent me from getting pregnant. She said she did not see why I couldnt conceive. We never had official tests done because we werent quite ready for the answer to that.

We geared up for another cal fire season and I was terrified. I thought there was no way we would get pregnant that summer since we had already gone through this and it caused so much stress and strain on our marriage. I had a conversation with my cousin that summer about my fears and my sadness about us not being able to conceive at that point. She gave me fantastic perspective and simple advise on what to do if this is really something we wanted. I wont get into it but one of the biggest things I was told was to relax. That helped a lot. Anybody who has ever wanted to have a baby can understand the pressure you start putting on yourself and your spouse that its not a relaxing experience. For a woman, we feel somewhat responsible for the negative pregnancy tests because its our bodies that dont seem to be able to carry a child.

I took so many pregnancy tests it was crazy. We got very used to the negative tests that we started expecting it. I think I finally gave up. We knew that come the end of this year, byron would be laid off from cal fire once again and we werent sure what his next steps would be any way so we thought maybe it wasnt the right time for us to have a baby.

November of 2016 was different. Although every month since we had started trying to have a baby, I felt “different” this moth was truly different. We spent thanksgiving with my in laws and I knew my body felt strange but I didnt let my mind wander too much because I had believed this several other times. I was “late” but that had happened several other times as well. So I told byron when we got home we would need to take a test. So we got home Friday night, and saturday morning we went out and bought pregnancy tests. My emotions were everywhere. When we got home I took the test. We let it sit for a minute and returned to the test like we had so many times before and for the first time we saw the word “pregnant” appear on the test. Immediately I had tears streaming down my face and we embraced. It was like time stopped for a bit. It was exciting, unreal, crazy, wonderful, unbelievable and so many other things. I ran to get a onsie I had been saving for byron that said “rad like my dad” and we started crying all over again.

Naturally I wanted to be sure so I took another test that we had just because I was in disbelief and it said “not pregnant” Our excitement was dashed. Our joy was gone. Confusion and sadness set in. my parents came over for dinner that night and I was just crushed. I told my mom I had taken a test that day that revealed we were not pregnant. So I tried to sip on a cocktail although I hated the way it tasted.

Later that night I sent a text to my cousin and told her about our emotional day. She wrote back and told me I was pregnant. I told her there was no way. Test said no. she said my hormones would be stronger in the morning and I should try again.

The next morning I was borderline depressed. I didnt want to get out of bed to relive the sadness of the negative pregnancy test. We had plans that day to get our christmas tree that day with a few friends. I considered not taking it but finally I decided to get up and get it over with. And to our surprise, it was positive! As were the 3 we took after that. The rest of the day was a blur. I just remember holding my stomach and thinking how amazing it was that we had finally made a baby.

It still took a while for it to set in. The disbelief continued as we experienced bleeding in the first trimester and other things that gave us doubt. But here we are- im 39 weeks pregnant and we are anxiously waiting for our baby girl to arrive. Im so grateful for God's perfect timing.

7 AWS Lambda Tips from the Trenches

Fourthcast has used AWS Lambda to host Alexa skills since the early days and learned a lot of pitfalls and valuable lessons

The Fourthcast development team has been using AWS Lambda to host Alexa skills since the early days of the Alexa Skills Kit. Lambda, at times, can be like your neighbor’s pit bull. Sure it looks all cute an fluffy, but you know at anytime something viscous could happen. We’ve experienced many of those “Lambda bites”. Here’s what you should do to avoid them yourself.

1. Keeping your instances warm

You may already know that Lambda functions, when not used for a while, get recycled. The next invocation will require redeploying the function, which takes some extra time and thus additional latency to your users. We call this a “cold” invocation, as opposed to a “warm” invocation.

What you may not have known is that cold invocations are much worse if your Lambda function uses the network. The table below shows some timings of invoking a very simple lambda skill. Invoking a cold non-networked function takes 7 times as long as a warm one. But a cold function that uses network takes 15 times longer than a network-using warm function.

Even worse, if your function is inside a VPC, it can take more than 10 seconds to attach the Elastic Network Interface. We’ve had production skills timeout without ever really don’t a thing besides trying to talk to the network on a cold start.

To address this, Fourthcast uses a warming trigger on all of our Lambda functions. We attach the CloudWatch Events — Schedule trigger with a 5 minute period. Since Lambda functions go cold at around 7 minutes of non-use, this keeps the function warm pretty much continually, and significantly improves startup latency.

A warming trigger on a skill

However, be warned that your function won’t stay active forever. Redeploying code or changing configuration will always cause a recycle. Also Alexa skills with heavy and concurrent use will require multiple deployments to run simultaneously. That second (or third) deployment will start cold. The warming function only keeps one deployment warm. Finally Lambda functions are automatically recycled periodically. We see a forced recycle about 7 times a day.

If you use the warming trigger, be sure to ignore events without the Alexa request key, and don’t rely on your invocation count to be meaningful for analytics anymore. Also don’t worry about the additional costs. Even at the biggest instance size, you’ll only be using up about 9,000 of your 266,667 free invocations allowed per month. If you use that much, you probably don’t need to warm your skill anyway.

2. Upgrade to Node.js 6.10

If you’re not a Node.js team, great … move on your merry way! But if you’ve got skills using Node.js 4.3, it’s time to upgrade.

Node.js 4.3 had several annoying bugs, but the worst among them is an OpenSSL bug that you wont’ discover until you’re running under load in production. This little doozy will put your entire function into a bad state. SSL connections will fail without cause intermittently, but only if you’re using DynamoDB. There’s a work around, but mostly, just upgrade to Node.js 6.10.

3. Finish What You Started

In programming models that support async operations (here’s looking at you Node.js), it’s possible, and sometimes easy, to finish your function and hand a response back to Alexa before everything has finished processing.

Aysnc operations that get caught up in the Lambda freeze/thaw are absolute death. They’ll pop back to life in some later invocation, but will likely be timed out. The tell-tale sign is bizarre timeouts with request id’s in Cloudwatch that correspond to requests issued hours earlier. These kinds of errors can often push libraries or OpenSSL into odd failure states that can only be resolved by forcing a redeploy, such as resizing the function.

Notice that the request id of the logged events are not the same as the request they were reported in. These are echoes from a failed prior invocation. Very bad.

You don’t want these kinds of Heisenbugs. Look carefully for anything that is executing in async, but not on the logical path to completing the Lambda function. The normal culprits for us have been caching puts and analytics. Since they’re not critical to the skill logic, you do not know that they didn’t finish. One such error caused us to believe we were logging analytics for 6 months before we realized maybe only one in three datums were actually stored. Also avoid any async work done at startup, outside of the handler.

While you shouldn’t rely on this, make sure that you’re using the callback rather than any of the functions on the context object to complete the invocation. This will do a best-effort to complete in-flight async operation before freezing your function.

4. Set Timeouts Shorter

Most libraries for async operations come along with long default timeout periods. In Node.js it is normally 2 minutes. With Alexa, if you’re not answering the user within 7.5 seconds, Alexa will respond with a failure message for you. A well-behaved skill should be much faster than that.

It’s much better to fail an async operation early and be able to tell the user that something is wrong in your own words rather than to get the dreaded, “There was a problem with the requested skill’s response” message. Also, debugging long-running calls that have been frozen, as mentioned above, are a huge pain.

In the case of interacting with an AWS service via the SDK, make sure you also set a low value for maxRetries, since these are cumulative with timeouts.

5. Avoid Global State

Because of container reuse, it’s possible to stuff data into global memory and ,with a good probability, it will be there in the next invocation. However, despite the fact that we’ve seen major tool libraries for Alexa leverage this, it should be strongly avoided. A deployment can be recycled at any time for many different reasons. Also there is no guarantee that requests within the same session will be routed to the same deployment.

I have also seen some debate about if it’s OK to store data in global state that will be used again strictly within the same request. Normally in Node.js (e.g. in an express based website) this is a huge red-flag, since that state could be clobbered by other interleaving requests. However, while I can’t find any documentation that guarantees this, in practice Lambda will not issue a request to an instance if another is currently in-flight. Because of this, using global state in a single request is possible, but I wouldn’t rely on it. It’ll mean weird bugs if you migrate off of Lambda.

In short, avoid using global memory. At Fourthcast we use global state only as a first-level cache.

6. Log Your Own Errors in Cloudwatch

Most our skills at Fourthcast catch any errors and return a user-friendly error message. If you do this, make sure that you log custom metrics for tracking these “soft errors” since Lambda’s invocation error metrics won’t be relevant anymore. At Fourthcast we use a custom Cloudwatch metric for soft errors, which allows as to attach an alarm and be alerted of high error rates.

7. Give It Some Room

Run you skill at one of the higher memory levels. The low memory instances are also allocated a smaller slice of processor and have very slow file and network IO. Many mysterious errors clear up when we’ve suddenly got more memory. With Lambda’s very generous free tier, you’re not likely to incur costs anyway, so go ahead, set it to 1536 MB.
