“I watched Lisa Frankenstein and I don’t think it went deep enough into [serious real-world issue that’s related to the plot]” THAT IS NOT WHAT THE MOVIE WAS FOR.
Not every movie has to be a video essay about society or go incredibly deep into the characters/issues/etc. If they do, that’s cool, keep on trucking. Good to see it. We need more movies that dig deep, because there’s a lot of movies out there that suffer from not asking the hard questions.
But can you honestly tell me that you looked at the trailer for this movie and genuinely expected it to be some deep shit? That’s like watching the trailer for Rocky Horror and going ah yes. An astute film that tackles hard-hitting topics and makes me think about the human psyche.
Like. Girl. Can we please just let the camp ass movie be a camp ass movie. Sometimes a movie is just here to have fun with it. If you want to dig deeper on your own, go ahead and do it! I like to do that myself, and I think it’s fun to sort through the different layers of a piece of media. But don’t rag on the 80s pastiche, Tim Burton/John Hughes lovechild, horror rom-com for not tackling deeply nuanced societal issues. It wasn’t intended for that.
