Please say more about the awful Asian designs in Danny Phantom. I'm not Asian but I'd love to have a rundown on the elements that make them offensive so I can avoid and critique those elements in other works. And also you deserve to speak your mind about it

im gonna mostly talk about southeast asian designs since thats what i am and the most familiar with and also what i feel are the show's worst transgression with their casual depictions. tw for racist imagery im gonna link pictures.

there's not much to say about the designs aside from, you know, everything but things to note are the unnatural yellow tone for the skin and closed slanted eyes. veggie burger (fan name for the bg character in the middle) also suffers from the huge nose that sometimes shows up in racist depictions. the straight edge/cut hair as well is somewhat stereotypical. this one isn't as bad but in conjunction with everything else its not ideal. i will give the smallest molecule of credit that at the very least dp never gave any of these bg characters buck teeth.

some depictions are better than others, but theres still missteps happening in one aspect or another. kwan's eyes in a lot of shots/episodes can be too skinny and even too slanted, the girl in the middle is almost perfect but her skin is too yellow (she looks kinda okay on my computer screen but i remember when watching dp on my tv she looked real brightly yellow), and principle ishiyama (who was weirdly forgotten about pretty early on in the show and was replaced by lancer doing most of the school stuff despite not being principle?? which is a whole other issue with how dp treats its poc characters) the same usual notes about the slanted eyes but also the upturned nose is pretty reminiscent of racist japanese art during ww2. again it is not the worst way to draw a nose but combined with everything else in this show's depiction of asian characters its not great, they are on thin ice man.

not to mention, principle ishiyama is the only character here with brown eyes. this is a problem that extends to all poc characters in dp and to my knowledge i think ishiyama might be the only one with them tbh. this is, again, a whole other issue though.

i think the thing that bothers me most about these designs though is that dp is very clearly aware that these depictions are bad. the only difference between the first set of characters and the second is one singular thing: they have a clear speaking role.

suddenly when theyre not stock background characters, dp knows how to act when drawing them. i cannot for the life of me find the image of it, but the last jock guy in the first set gets a speaking role in reign storm (he's cosplaying phantom) and he is drawn with proper open eyes! (theyre also blue but whatever) it just makes me sad that this was a clear choice they made.

the show also went in a different direction in the final product, but early development stuff was really drawing from a lot of japanese/asian influences like danny was originally gonna have a motorcycle (pulling from ghost in the shell) and was even referenced in the show via the akira motorcycle reference (which i once again, for the life of me, cannot find. danny took johnny 13's motorcycle and did the classic akira slide i think it was in million dollar ghost?? idk whichever one where the giw are trying to blow up the ghost zone). danny's name was originally gonna be jackie, named after jackie chan, this i assume was given to jack fenton afterwards. and i think the show having a more martial arts direction with the action was also gonna be a thing? that one could be wrong dont quote me on that, there was an episode where danny and vlad have like a weird ninja fight though im pretty sure.

either way my point here is that they wanted to pull from all these influences and it was prominent enough during development that they sprinkle references to it throughout the show and yet their portrayal and treatment of asian characters in the show is so abysmal it just feels Bad™, you know? i cant really put it more eloquently than that, like its very take and no give with it.

it overall just puts a bad taste in my mouth, and its sad that it still affects people years later. like i mentioned in the tags of the post that started this discussion with that whole old trend of putting yourself into the bg of dp screenshots, i felt alienated by that. and its not the people who participated's fault obviously but most of the people i saw participating were white fans (going off of how they drew themselves) and it made me a bit mad that they were able to enjoy the style of the show in a more carefree manner than i ever could. i didnt want to ruin anyone's fun obviously, but a small part of me wanted to bring to light how i wasnt on equal ground with them in that situation.

one of my FAOVIRTEEEEE THINGS ABOUT PD WORLD EVER. is that there r so many people in the bg with just. mundane powers. u are going to see this thought repeated when i send u the 17 trivia but i need 2 talk about it NOW so i will risk sounding like a broken record. like. u remember the guy from the cartoon episode who was the barber? he had powers and it was super speed but only a little bit and only localized to his hands. and he used that to be a barber! there are so many people in the bg of pd that just. have shit like that. its normal. and they dont get into How or Why much but i think it is a combination of "born with them" or "caused by external forces" (like with william and dakota who did not have powers until Their Respective Incidents). theres alsoooo. not to talk about mark winters all the time but mark specifically uses his suits as a way to tap into his powers and make them stronger (the big fuckign. needles in his back) so it can be assumed that hes always had powers and only just recently(ish) found a way to magnify them and use them for villain shit. not everyone with powers becomes a hero or villain sometimes they just use them for . mundane everyday shit !!!! i love this. sorry i am rambling

also with ur whole question about earth. the lore for this is so batshit insane so i am gonna wait for the trivia bc i basically transcripted bizlys words for it and im not going to try to parse that in my current mental state (the things he says about mars . wild) HOWEVER i do think prime is physically very similar to earth in terms of time and seasons and physics and such. partly for the meta reason of thats what the players are automatically going to assume AND the in world reason of "planet extremely similar to your old home planet will be automatically easier to settle on"

Shinee's concepts may be simple, but the Thom Browne ones are very aesthetically pleasing and the NCT-esque ones are fun too, because the pics are dynamic despite the boring background. Love all the boards you've prepared! I actually bought some more SM albums, particularly NCT's and Aespa's (I know, fuck SM, but I got a good deal) and the photos?! WOW. The issue is KQ is scared of taking risks, they can't commit fully, even the outfits for this comeback, we thought we'd be getting Yeehawteez, but it's so half-assed and we're back to fucking bikers and bodyguards, lol. And I'll never understand why they had funky hair colours for Halazia and not this. And now Jongho is purple??? A bit late, mate. Yes, Outlaw just like Movement is very cohesive, but I feel like that kind of cohesiveness is overrated and a bit too much. The songs blend in, I don't know where one ends and another one begins, and they're STACKED with noise and switch ups, so listening to the whole thing from the beginning to the end is a lot. ZFP1 is a cohesive album, it fits the late summer vibe, yet each song is very different. I'd say ZFP3 is similar. I just wish they let Jongho's voice rest, the amount of high notes *sigh* I think it's Wake Up? Multicolored & Discerning Your Magical Colors

Yes, I'm still on my MTG pop culture magic bullshit, but this is an important part of that practice.

This post is part of my ever-growing MTG pop culture series. Remember to check out the MTG wiki to get familiar with the colors and the lore. Take what resonates and works for your practice.

There are five colors in Magic: The Gathering: White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green. As previously established, each color has a philosophy along with allies and enemies. Today we're gonna talk about how they work together.

There are some very specific patterns when you talk about them working together - they almost always appear in a specific order. Here's a quick explanation:

Monocolored: White is W. Blue is U. Black is B. Red is R. Green is G.

Allied Pairs: White-Blue is WU. Blue-Black is UB. Black-Red is BR. Red-Green is RG. Green-White is GW.

Enemy Pairs: White-Black is WB. Blue-Red is UR. Black-Green is BG. Red-White is RW. Green-Blue is GU.

Shards (a color and its allies): Green-White-Blue (White focus) is GWU. White-Blue-Black (Blue focus) is WUB. Blue-Black-Red (Black focus) is UBR. Black-Red-Green (Red focus) is BRG. Red-Green-White (Green focus) is RGW.

Wedges (a color and its enemies): Red-White-Black (White focus) is RWB. Green-Blue-Red (Blue focus) is GUR. White-Black-Green (Black focus) is WBG. Blue-Red-White (Red focus) is URW. Black-Green-Blue (Green focus) is BGU.

Quadruples (lacking one specific color): White-Blue-Black-Red is WUBR. Blue-Black-Red-Green is UBRG. Black-Red-Green-White is BRGW. Red-Green-White-Blue is RGWU. Green-White-Blue-Black is GWUB.

All Colors: White-Blue-Black-Red-Green, aka WUBRG.

The color combinations will almost always start with White in front or as the focus and end with Green in front or as the focus. Because I'm a maniac, I always organize my notes to be whichever one starts with White in the front first.

Each of these versions of multicolor - color pairs, color triples, color quadruples, and all colors - also have specific terms related to them that's used as shorthand to describe them. Things like the Ravnica guilds (for pairs) and Nephilim (for quadruples), the Tarkir dragon broods (for allied pairs) and clans (for wedges), the Strixhaven colleges (for enemy pairs), the Ikoria triomes (for wedges), the shards of Alara (for shards), the New Capenna demonic crime families (for shards), ans so forth. Usually the most common shorthand are the guilds, the clans, and the shards. Really, the Multicolored page on the MTG wiki is gonna be the best to help you figure out the ups and downs and sideways of these terms.

Of course, there's also the matter of Colorless. By virtue of not being a color, it's immune to all of these mixing shenanigans. It's the total of all colors or the lack of them. If that's the energy that you find to be most useful, then so be it! I've used it myself in the past, and while I don't use it nearly as much, it's still a fascinating tool.

So how does this apply to pop culture magic? Well, like how almost everyone and everything in MTG has a color, you do too!

So how do you figure out yours? Well, there are a few options:

Read about each color's philosophy. This will help you learn and understand the colors on a deeper level and help you figure out if you lean one way or another.

Take a Quotev quiz. I recommend Quotev the most, because it shows you the breakdown of how your responses lead to different answers and is helpful in breaking down if you lean multicolored or monocolored - and if so, in which direction.

Ask me to vibe check you. Your magical practice may use different colored energy from your day-to-day life, and your magical practice version is often more important to your energy work than your day-to-day version. You can come into my inbox (if I'm still on Tumblr at least) and describe your magical practice, and I'll point you in a direction or seven.

I have found that my energy varies into three shards: UBR for my magical workings, and either RGW or GWU for my volunteer work. Within those, I find that I can easily use any combination of U, B, and R in my magic, while in my volunteer work I tend to remain in RG, GW, or WU instead of RW or GU.
