FMP Blog
From an early age I’ve been drawn to the natural world. I’ve always had the urge to upturn rocks, dig holes and pick away at rotting trees to discover what lies within these mysterious concealed environments. Collecting organic objects and materials has informed my understanding of the different processes and cycles that occur in nature, while the addition of found man-made objects has resulted in a strange hoard of relics ranging from dead insects and muntjac skulls to contorted metal and concrete rescued from skips. Looking back at my childhood self I can see this impulse to accumulate is still present in the way I make work and generate ideas today. I regularly take photographs and draw to document my environment exploring how processes like erosion and decay transform both the natural and man-made world.
Tumblr media
My work deals with ideas of curiosity, wonder, illusion, magic and perception. Through the technical revolution of the 21stcentury and the development of the internet, an immeasurable torrent of visual stimuli has been unleased. This bombardment has changed the way in which we process images and information, shortening the time and depth in which we look, as an inevitable response to the overwhelming quantity of images that now exist. I sometimes loose myself in Instagram’s infinite explore page, aimlessly flicking for hours on end, yet being completely unable to recall more than five posts I’d seen. We have allowed ourselves to become mindlessly spoon-fed by the social media and entertainment platforms that we rely on. Through the development of the internet and modern smartphone technology we now have the ability to share and repost visual information on an unprecedented scale. This unlimited access to the unknown has greatly affected our perception of the world, we are able to experience and understand almost everything in our world as it now exists on the internet. Despite being hugely beneficial to our access and understanding of the rest of the world, I believe that it has inevitably numbed our ability to wonder. If you asked someone a century ago what diving with dolphins was like they wouldn’t have many prior experiences to help comprehend what that would be like, yet we can just pop that into YouTube or download an app on our your iPhone to watch on a VR headset. Along with the developments in our ability to communicate and share images, the technology being used to capture and exhibit them is becoming increasingly realistic and immersive. Now you can witness almost anything you could imagine from the comfort of your bed. In my opinion this daily exposure to the unimaginable can be demotivating and ultimately discourages exploration. Aspiring to achieve originality may seem futile in a world when everything has already been done and documented.
Tumblr media
I’m interested in how changing the perspective, scale and context of an image can affect the way we view and interpret it. Often I deliberately abstract the subject matter I’m photographing, considering the angle, scale and composition. We subconsciously look for patterns when we view images and often hold preconceptions surrounding the laws of light and motion existing in the image. We instinctively look for truth when reading images, this paranoia surrounding image reliability has grown in recent years as a result of improved accuracy with photoshop and post production technologies. Whilst becoming increasingly flooded by imagery, we have also lost our trust in the authenticity of what we view. I am interested in producing photographs that create illusions without digitally altering the image and removing its ‘authenticity’. Instead, I try to subvert the laws of motion and light acting in the photographs, this varies from upturned images in reflections to abstracted windows of light rotated by 90 degrees to face up like a portal to the sea. I aim to produce disorientating and mysterious images in which it is difficult to ground yourself as the viewer. The process of viewing the image is in itself an act of exploration, the ambiguous nature of my abstracted observations aim to invite the viewer to try and decipher the image. My images have an aesthetic quality, I want their superficial beauty to engage the viewer and hopefully motivate them to further explore its honesty as an image.
Tumblr media
I photographed ‘chair’ having spotted it beneath the glassy surface of the river Thames on a calm day. The angle at which it was taken along with the transparent greenish blue gradient helped to disguise the position of the photographer. It is difficult to decide whether the photograph was taken above or below the water, this is further confused by the dusty sediment floating on the surface which could almost be stars against the dark background. I don’t mind how people interpret my images, they don’t aim to fully fool the viewer either, in this photograph the presence of reeds gives away the chair’s riverbed residence. By encouraging the viewer to question what my photographs are I hope to ignite a sense of explorative curiosity, which I believe we are becoming increasingly distanced from in this world of fast food imagery.
Tumblr media
As a way of coping in a world where we have access to everything, I am more interested in focusing in on the often overlooked details of decay and moments of illusion that often reveal themselves in the mundane. On multiple occasions I have returned to the antique Japanese microscope that I inherited from my granny, often positioning my phone camera above its eye piece and flicking between X10 and X40 magnification as I observe these microworlds. The microscopic lens acts as a gateway to a previously inaccessible world, the slightly stretched distortion around the edge of its circular frame, crackled refractions and minor taints add to the astronomical view through its lens. I used it to capture a body of photographs observing antique sample slides and sections of photographic film, these were then projected at a fast frame-rate onto a suspended square of translucent paper, allowing the images to be viewed from either side. I chose to incorporate the projector into the sculpture, mounting it to a tripod like a telescope looking up at the flickering moon-like images.
Tumblr media
Recently I was observing glass panels that I’d trialed a series of material experiments on, these varied from burning and scratching away layers of soot, spray paint and super glue with a lighter to create a variety of textures and protruding forms on the glass. I began to etch away speckled circular shapes at different scales which began to resemble microscopic images of cells. The continual etching away and reapplication of heat and paint allowed me to control how much light penetrated through the glass. I am looking at documenting these microscopic images as well as casting light directly through the physical glass slides to create an immersive light installation.
I enjoyed listening to Tacita Dean discuss her portrait 35mm projection ‘film’ which was installed in Tate’s Turbine Hall in 2011. She collaborated with an architect to design a 3D printed aperture gate masking system which enabled her to shoot multiple exposures on a single film frame. She described suddenly having the ‘ability to mix time in one frame’ which enabled her to fully explore the different possibilities with re-exposing the film, for example like enabling her to capture dry ice layered over ‘Mount Analogue’ in the film. The magical illusion effect created by her surreal collages of images was complimented by the magical colorful flickering of light which occurred when cutting and pasting the film, which she deliberately incorporated due to its mystical celestial effect. She talks of the unexpected side effect of the digital revolution which meant that people no longer used their hands when making film, this disconnection with the physical process is worsened as digital film now often makes its way through multiple stages of the production line, distancing it further from its original maker. Unlike digital, film has an ‘eternal light’ which has to be present for the image to be cast. Although she truthfully states that ‘all technology is destined to become obsolete’, like her, I believe that the physical process when exploring mechanisms and materials is crucial and this is why older technologies must be respected and maintained. I admire her interest in embracing the imperfections and accidents that occur when working with a material. It is often by either looking through, or casting light out of these different lenses that allows us expose and explore these different worlds.
Tumblr media
In recent years we have developed a great reliance on our camera phones, yet we rarely question the magical processes going on to produce these images. The mystical intrigue and novelty surrounding how a photograph was made in the past has inevitably lost its impact and interest in the 21st century. As technology has evolved, moving from manual film photography to digital cameras, we are becoming increasingly distanced from the physical process, and so are questioning less and less how things are produced. This is the same for the extremely advanced technology, services and infrastructure that surrounds us in everyday life. The more efficient and modernized technology becomes, the less it reveals the processes and mechanisms going on within. This too feeds into our increasing unawareness and lack of interest in the processes going on that sculpt the world around us.
Tumblr media
Here is a section of a glitch that occurred whilst shaking iPhone 5 on panoramic mode. The glitch spans across the screen and there is an interesting divide between the band of colorful pixels and the areas of image that were successfully processed. I am interested in the randomn fleeting nature of glitches as well as the iPhone’s ability to capture this moment of digital failure. By capturing this occurrence as a photograph in a sense reveals how the phone works to create the image, unveiling a wall of pixels at the moment of failure. However in the process of this reveal, an intriguing and magical image is produced. The glitch image undermines modern camera phone technology (digital failure), yet it contrarily reignites a sense of wonder and curiosity by partially exposing how a photograph, this mundane thing that we all have access to, is actually digitally pieced together and what happens when this process doesn’t go as programmed.

Facebook's $149 Portal TV turns your television into a giant smart display
Last year, Facebook made its first foray into hardware with the Portal and Portal+ smart displays, which featured an AI-powered camera that could track your movements. Facebook's sketchy reputation on privacy dampened their reception, however, as did the company's confusing messaging on whether the devices collect data (surprise: they do). Yet, those issues have not deterred the company, as Facebook is announcing not one, not two, but three new Portal models today. The Portal and Portal Mini are standalone smart displays that retail for $179 and $129 respectively. The other, however, is called the Portal TV. Priced at $149, it's essentially a camera attachment that turns your TV into a giant smart display.
In terms of design, the two new standalone Portal models appear much improved over last year's models. I thought Portal+ with its 15.6-inch rotating display was something of an eyesore, for example. Even the smaller 10-inch Portal had a certain clunky look to it that reminded me of the original Echo Show. The new models on the other hand, have a much more subtle design, with a narrow border around the edges that make them look more like picture frames than smart displays. This way, Facebook says, they're more suitable in more rooms in your home.
The 2019 Portal has a 10-inch HD display (1,280 x 800), while the Portal Mini has an 8-inch HD display (also 1,280 x 800). They looked colorful and sharp enough in the brief demo I had, though I need to spend more time with them to really assess their quality. Both of them can be used in either landscape or portrait mode, the latter of which is especially handy for video chatting with someone calling in from their phone. They both also have Adaptive Display tech, which automatically adjusts the screen's brightness according to its surroundings (It's worth nothing that Google's Nest Hub has had this feature for awhile now).
The new Portals have a different way of toggling the camera and microphone on and off. Instead of just a single button that shuts off both functions, there's now a dual-stage sliding toggle: you can enable both of them, turn off the camera (an integrated physical cover will slide over the camera lens) but leave the microphone on, or disable both functions altogether. You'll know the microphone is off when an LED at the top of the device glows red.
Facebook claims that the new Portals have improved speakers as well, with two full-range speakers plus a subwoofer in each device. Based on a brief experience at the launch event, they did sound very good, with rich bass and clean highs. I'd need to hear them in a quieter room however, to figure out how they compare to other smart speakers.
The Portal TV, on the other hand, is not really a smart display on its own. It's a camera that you attach to your television's HDMI port, thus transforming your TV into a giant smart display. It comes with a small remote control to navigate the Portal TV interface.
As with the other Portal devices, you can use the Portal TV for video calls, which I have to say seems to be a very good use case for it. There's just something about being able to see your callers on a large TV that makes it seem much more "immersive," as if they're actually there in the same room with you. I can see something like this being a big hit for people with large families, especially since the Portal TV's 120-degree field of view is able to fit more people into the same shot. (Both the Portal and Portal Mini have a 114-degree field of view camera.) Additionally, the Portal TV has an 8-field microphone array (other Portal devices have a 4-field microphone array) in order to accommodate bigger spaces and the fact that you'll likely be further away from the device.
One feature that only the Portal TV has is Watch Together. It's a feature that lets you and another Portal TV owner watch the same shows together during a video call. Right now, this feature only works with Facebook Watch, but there's a possibility that it'll work with other streaming services in the future. Also, as Facebook Watch is only accessible via a Facebook account (duh), the only way to watch it together is if the video call is via Messenger rather than WhatsApp. In "Watch Together" mode, your caller's window will be minimized to a small picture-in-picture in the upper right corner, while the video you're both watching takes up the whole screen.
Similar to the other Portal devices, the Portal TV has a toggle switch that mutes the microphone and shuts off the camera simultaneously. There's also a physical camera lens cover if you want that extra bit of privacy.
That's not all either. Facebook is also announcing that, along with making calls via Messenger, you can now use Portal devices to make video calls via WhatsApp. Additionally, while last year's Portals were only available in the US and Canada, the new batch will now be available in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Facebook will also continue selling last year's Portal+ for $249.
Aside from that, many of the features on the new Portals are the same as last year's. They include the aforementioned video calling, AR experiences and effects (such as funny face filters and an AR-powered 'Storytime' feature for kids), a built-in browser, Amazon Prime Video, plus two different voice assistants: "Hey Portal," and Amazon's Alexa. The "Hey Portal" command is for Portal-specific controls such as calling someone in your contacts list, increasing the volume, or setting the alarm. Alexa, on the other hand, is used for other tasks, such as looking up something on the internet or seeing who rang your Ring video doorbell.
All the Portals also have that AI-powered smart camera, which is able to digitally pan and zoom to frame your shot perfectly, no matter where you move around the room. It works with multiple people too; the shot will automatically adjust to fit everyone in the frame. You can also select just one person to "spotlight" and the camera will digitally zoom in on just them. According to Facebook, there's no biometric or specific facial recognition going on here. It can identify whether or not a moving object is a person, but not who that person is.
There are several other privacy and security measures too. All video and voice calls, be it from Messenger or WhatsApp, are end-to-end encrypted. The AI-powered camera features are processed locally on the device, and not sent to Facebook's servers. "Hey Portal" voice interactions are sometimes recorded and transcribed for a team to look at (much like with all other smart voice assistants) but they can be deleted, and storage of the voice recordings can be blocked entirely.
That said, not everything you do on Portal is 100 percent private. Facebook acknowledges that it does collect some information about how you use Portal and that information may be used to inform the ads you see on Facebook. So if you make a lot of video calls, you might see ads about video calling, or if you use Facebook Watch a lot, you might see ads related to that. That's not really any different from just using normal Facebook, but it's at least something to be aware of.
You can pre-order the Portal, Portal Mini and Portal TV starting today. The Portal and Portal Mini will start shipping on October 15th, while the Portal TV begins shipping November 5th. You can bundle any two Portal devices for $50 off.
