These two stunning modern Indian villas, created by architect Moriq, each feature peaceful courtyard designs within them. One has a combination of green space and a multi textured floor, which acts as a border of privacy between the entryway to the home and the main family living area. The second features a pivotal water body that greets the family when they come home, and welcomes in guests. A connective bridge between living volumes on the the first floor overlooks the reflection pool and lawn, and a projector screen that provides outdoor entertainment. Villa number one is located in Hyderabad, with an area of 7500 square feet. The build follows the traditional Hindu Vastu shastra system of architecture, and has been fashioned to fit a single family. The linear north facing plot has an open plot to the south; neighbours are at home on the east & west sides. A simple white concrete modern home exterior guards the hidden luxuries within.

Just outside of the front gate, there is a boulder with the name of the house upon it, written in Hindi. The name given to the house is ‘Shanti Dham’, meaning ‘a peaceful holy place’.

Once beyond the gates it is clear to see why the home is thought a peaceful and holy place for the homeowners. A combination of simplicity and understated luxury shapes the home, and allows the family to remain grounded and be close to nature. The main feature of the home is the modern courtyard design that lies between the front yard and the living room. Because this is a north facing plot by vaastu principles, the living space had to be placed to the north east side. Any entry from the north east side would encroach on the family’s privacy, so the interior courtyard between the front garden and the lounge was introduced as a buffer zone.

The courtyard floor is made up from interlocking sections of wood effect tiles. white marble slabs, pebbles and natural stones from Pondicherry. Custom louver doors make up the boundary, composed from MS frame and natural wood.

The ground floor consists of a dining room, a dry and wet kitchen with utility and storage space, and one of the bedrooms with an attached deck area.

Mature trees have been retained in every part of the natural space.

An outdoor dining space is available for use just outside of the interior kitchen diner.

The most challenging part of the planning stage for the family was to come up with a solution that would best use the large linear shape of the plot. In the end, the first quarter of the plot was allocated to the family elders who requested an independent studio apartment so that they could have a space of their own.

Concrete slabs are arranged in an irregular design in the water filled courtyard. The patio is lit around the edges to accentuate its jagged shape.

Boulders jut out of the still waters, and create a border around a lush lawn.

Brothers live with their families right across the lawn from each other. A semi-formal living room, complete with a bar, opens onto the lawn to create a prime social gathering spot. There is also a projector here that converts the lawn’s wall into a large screen – perfect for parties and the IPL cricket season. The projection wall can be viewed from various points in the house, including a bridge that connects both the houses.

Beautiful bespoke pieces fill the home with a rustic meets luxury aesthetic.

Neutral backdrops fill the spacious interiors, which bask in sunlight.

The neutral palette is uplifted with colourful home accessories, like bright blue and green scatter cushions in the living room. Stunning wooden pendant lights descend from a double height ceiling. A unique fan cools the air from an architectural support column.

Just outside of the front gate, there is a boulder with the name of the house upon it, written in Hindi. The name given to the house is ‘Shanti Dham’, meaning ‘a peaceful holy place’.

Once beyond the gates it is clear to see why the home is thought a peaceful and holy place for the homeowners. A combination of simplicity and understated luxury shapes the home, and allows the family to remain grounded and be close to nature. It is a direct translation of the personality of the well travelled and elegant couple.

A tree from the neighbour’s compound has been integrated into the landscape design.

The main feature of the home is the modern courtyard design that lies between the front yard and the living room. Because this is a north facing plot by vaastu principles, the living space had to be placed to the north east side. Any entry from the north east side would encroach on the family’s privacy, so the interior courtyard between the front garden and the lounge was introduced as a buffer zone.

The courtyard design imitates the natural landscaping that surrounds the home.

The courtyard floor is made up from interlocking sections of wood effect tiles. white marble slabs, pebbles and natural stones from Pondicherry. Custom louver doors make up the boundary, composed from MS frame and natural wood.

The ground floor consists of a dining room, a dry and wet kitchen with utility and storage space, and one of the bedrooms with an attached deck area.

Mature trees have been retained in every part of the natural space.

An outdoor dining space is available for use just outside of the interior kitchen diner.

The modern dining room extension runs straight off of the kitchen island.

Our second tour also takes place in Hyderabad, this time in a home with a total area of 17006 square feet. The massive plot facilitates a home design that brings together a large joint family, whilst still providing each member with their own personal space.

The most challenging part of the planning stage for the family was to come up with a solution that would best use the large linear shape of the plot. In the end, the first quarter of the plot was allocated to the family elders who requested an independent studio apartment so that they could have a space of their own.

A reflection pool fills the connective exterior space, along with green landscaping. The beautiful vista welcomes you to the family home.

Concrete slabs are arranged in an irregular design in the water filled courtyard. The patio is lit around the edges to accentuate its jagged shape.

Boulders jut out of the still waters, and create a border around a lush lawn.

Brothers live with their families right across the lawn from each other. A semi-formal living room, complete with a bar, opens onto the lawn to create a prime social gathering spot. There is also a projector here that converts the lawn’s wall into a large screen – perfect for parties and the IPL cricket season. The projection wall can be viewed from various points in the house, including a bridge that connects both the houses.

Beautiful bespoke pieces fill the home with a rustic meets luxury aesthetic.

Neutral backdrops fill the spacious interiors, which bask in sunlight.

The neutral palette is uplifted with colourful home accessories, like bright blue and green scatter cushions in the living room. Stunning wooden pendant lights descend from a double height ceiling. A unique fan cools the air from an architectural support column.

Unique nesting coffee tables bring in an eclectic vibe, and work perfectly with a patchwork concept rug.

A modern accent chair is framed by a beautiful tree in the courtyard. Informal living and dining areas and a guest bedroom fill the rest of the ground floor.

Upstairs, identical double height master bedrooms and bathrooms are situated right next to each other.

These two stunning modern Indian villas, created by architect Moriq, each feature peaceful courtyard designs within them. One has a combination of green space and a multi textured floor, which acts as a border of privacy between the entryway to the home and the main family living area. The second features a pivotal water body that greets the family when they come home, and welcomes in guests. A connective bridge between living volumes on the the first floor overlooks the reflection pool and lawn, and a projector screen that provides outdoor entertainment. The two tours also feature impressive interior spaces that are steeped in contemporary elegant luxury.

Villa number one is located in Hyderabad, with an area of 7500 square feet. The build follows the traditional Hindu Vastu shastra system of architecture, and has been fashioned to fit a single family. Mid Century Modern Style Home In Silicon Valley

Brimming with Californian mid century modern design, including wood wall paneling, floor-to-ceiling glazing and a gabled ceiling, this place is reminiscent of an Eichler home. Created by Klopf Architecture, with landscape design by Outer Space Landscape Architects, this is a custom build that uses materials and technologies that are commonplace today to translate the mid century aesthetic. The house promotes an indoor-outdoor lifestyle for a young and growing family, located at the heart of Silicon Valley in a Los Altos neighbourhood. The goal was to create a light atmosphere and an energy-efficient lifestyle in the new 3,000 square foot dwelling, which replaces an older ranch style home.

The house is a 3 bedroom, 2 and a half bathroom abode, with a private outdoor pool.

Exterior lighting under the eaves means that the family’s outdoor living areas can still be used and enjoyed long after dark.

One glazed wall of the master bedroom slides open to the outdoors, linking it seamlessly to the modern pool patio design – perfect for a refreshing early morning dip. If exercise isn’t on the agenda so early in the day, then the selection of modern outdoor chairs provide opportunity for an al fresco breakfast or to peruse the morning papers.

Up on the raised deck, a railing doubles as a bench seat, complete with bright scatter cushions.

The deck also serves as an outdoor dining room, furnished with Eames style Eiffel chairs to continue the mid century modern look on from the interior.

Inside, the home has been created on a grid, to section out separate spaces for different activities, like relaxing, cooking, dining, playing, and a music area that houses a baby grand piano. Clerestory windows were included in this mid century modern living room to help make the space feel light and airy. A white armchair and unique plant stands lift the dark sofa arrangement, whilst yellow accents and art add sunny warmth.

The lounge section opens out into a lofty dining space, where more impressive clerestory windows flood the generous floor plan with natural light. The walls and ceilings are plain crisp white but the honey tones of the oak wood flooring works toward warming the scheme through. A rich wood dining set sits by sliding glass exterior doors, which lead out onto the pool deck.

The dining area leads directly off an open plan kitchen diner, decked out in white and wood kitchen cabinets and clean white countertops.

Four grey bar stools line up along one side of a central kitchen island. A few yellow accents dot the white and wood decor, tying it in with the nearby lounge decor. You can find more gorgeous white and wood kitchens here.

Two linear pendants are suspended over the kitchen island, their low profiles keep the space uncluttered.

The piano stands to one side of the kitchen installation, tucked by a huge window. The high sloping roof creates a feeling of grandeur.

At the other end of the kitchen bar stools there is a colourful playroom for the two children of the family, allowing them to be close to their parents whilst meals are being prepared. A fenced-in play area is attached to this room at the front of the house, providing an indoor-outdoor play space. This connected zone is a flexible space that can morph and change in use for the family over the years.

The playroom can also be closed off from the great room by sliding out a large pocket door.

The colourful kid’s decor pieces are toned down by one black painted wall and one wood panelled wall. The huge window and glass door bring in green views from the children’s garden.

An atrium brings extra light and nature to the great room.

A Heath tile wall has been fashioned at the back of the atrium for privacy, to block out the direct view of the rear yard from the entry door.

The three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, the playroom and the sitting room are under flat roofs, which balance out either side of the sloping gable roof of the main space.

The white decor, walnut cabinetry and dark window frames tie all of the individual spaces together as one unified design, creating a peaceful flow throughout the house. Huge pocketing glass doors foster a feeling of openness, and encourage use of outdoor spaces. In this room, a bedroom chair has a swivel base so that it can easily turn to take in the nature view.

Soft planting feathers the edges of the contemporary build.

Concrete paving creates cool contrast with warm wood decking and garden steps.

A concrete bench stands solidly in a mud room, and is echoed by an identical bench design on the other side of the window wall. Chrome wall hooks hang coats and hats against a wood panelled wall.

Wood siding has been used for both interior and exterior spaces, to accentuate the indoor-outdoor nature of the house.

The wood siding has been mitered at the corners, including where it meets interior drywall. Materials are held up just off the floor, with a tight minimal reveal.

Inside a grey and white bathroom, custom cabinetry matches the joinery in the rest of the house, with a trim-less, minimalist appearance.

Chrome accessories add shine to the wash space.

By the basin, a small planter introduces a little greenery to the stark scheme.

Sunlight pours through a skylight.

A large picture window opens up the look of the narrow bathroom.

The outdoor lounge area nestles beneath mature trees.

The garage door has been set completely flush with the wall to de-emphasise it, and provide a more pleasing presentation to the street.

The clerestory windows create privacy.

A sunshine yellow front door gives out happy vibes.

The yellow entry door also provides the first hint of accent colour used inside.

Hidden pocket doors make the building appear open sided.

Windows along each side of the roofline allow the line of sight to pass straight through the structure.

Swiss Cubic House Tour, A Contemporary Concrete Landmark

Located near Lucerne in Switzerland, this is ‘House H’ by Buchner Bründler architects in Basel, with photography by Bruno Helbling. This home is a contemporary structure of concrete that stands as a modern landmark, its build being in stark contrast to the more traditional style homes within the same neighbourhood. The cubic house is an expressive design that includes a number of outdoor volumes that look out over stunning views of Lake Lucerne. The interior of the house too benefits fully from its picturesque location, thanks to the inclusion of massive floor to ceiling windows that stretch the entire length of expansive rooms on each floor.

Anchored on the hilltop, this stacked concrete creation glows invitingly from within. The enormous windows tear across the solid box-like design, ripping open the side to the world, and drinking in every bit of beauty that the view has to offer.

The large scale windows cut away revealing sections in the exterior walls, showcasing interesting segments of the homes interior. Here we see the first glimpse of an internal concrete staircase ascending through the centre of the house.

In the warmth of daylight, the outdoor rooms come into play. This yard at the home’s main entrance has a built-in bench, suspended in the wall. We can see a suggestion of an exterior stairwell to the left, leading down to a lower level. A cutaway in the concrete roof lets the sunshine flood in over the approach path. To the right, a large outdoor potted plant acts as a visual softener to the hard man-made lines of the build.

From this angle we can see the amazing views that await beyond the oversized windows of the house. The lake, the mountains and a sweeping uninterrupted skyscape.

The large wooden framed windows have wooden shutters to protect them and the inhabitants from the elements.

The exterior staircase is concrete, like the rest of the contemporary home. The steps are hidden behind a solid concrete wall rather than an open balustrade, so that the stairwell melds with the smooth surface of the architecture.

The many surrounding mature trees and leafy shrubs help to soften the modern building’s strong sharp edges.

Each and every area of the home, inside and out, presents the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views presented by this fabulous location on ‘Vierwaldstätter See’. Even the main staircase is a prime viewing spot, where the sunlight works in tandem with the solid angular architecture to create geometric shadow patterns.

Concrete living rooms are a good base for showing off striking elements, but decor in this home takes a backseat to the scenery that wraps around the space like a living mural.

A floating hearth runs the length of the internal wall in the concrete living room, supporting an open log fire. A substantial concrete chimney breast is stacked above it.

On the other side of the internal dividing wall we have the kitchen. The units are made of a warm wood grain. The warm toned material provides contrast and welcome relief from the expanse of cold concrete everywhere else. The appliances are stainless steel to make a link with the cool grey tones of the walls. Outside of the kitchen, a shelving unit has been recessed into the concrete wall of the dining area.

At night, the cold concrete takes on an entirely different personality. The firelight warms the mottled grey walls, making them appear almost cosy. The deep shadows exude drama, and the exposed staircase is lit like a thrilling theatre set.

Entirely glazed walls and a menagerie of outdoor living spaces give the home a gloriously open feel. Despite its heavy concrete walls, the unrestrictive design of the structure evokes an undeniable feeling of lightness and freedom.

There are no TVs, projection screens or home offices here. Only the natural view is needed. A comfortable seat, a cold drink, and maybe just a good book to while away the hours and complement the peace.

Out on the deck, a squared concrete strut frames the view of a distant mountain, as though it were a landscape painting hung in an art gallery.

Wooden elements and white rendered walls are thrown into the mix of this highly modern interior scheme.

Several moments of warm LED strip lighting have been installed around the perimeter of rooms and hallways, casting a subtle glow down the raw walls.

The windows appear almost frameless, held only by an unobtrusive wooden inset.

A large solar tube filters natural sunlight into this internal space from the roof. Here in the hallway, a pair of contemporary wooden chairs sit in wait.

There are no decorative pendant lights in this home, only recessed designs.

Everything in the kitchen is of a minimalist fashion: no handles adorn the plain fronted cabinets, the faucet is very much about function rather than form, as is the extractor fan and the oven. No herb planters dress the countertop. The walls are devoid of spice racks and decorative open shelving. Nothing but clean open space.

In the bathroom the minimalist fashion continues with a frameless mirror, a handle-free vanity unit and two simple faucets.

A side balcony is covered in gravel, and has a few of its own plants to tie in with the bordering beauty spot.
