Alfons greets Kate in a back alley saying that it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other, and asks how she’s been. It’s been a few days since she’s seen him, and he has an indifferent look on his face that makes her feel disgusted. She tells him that it’s been a peaceful few days since he hasn’t been around to mess with her. He laughs and says that’s boring, but promises that tonight will be exciting. Kate raises her voice asking Alfons how he takes that as her saying she needs excitement, which causes Ellis to shush her gently, and Alfons joins in with Ellis in agreement as if he wasn’t the one instigating her. Quieting her mind and reminding herself that she is the Fairytale Keeper, she refocuses on their mission.

She, Ellis and Alfons were on a stake out about a sort of street crime. They hunker down in the alley in a single file line, with Ellis being in the front and Alfons behind her. It’s so dark, they can’t help but to as close to each other as possible in order to see the other person. The scent of various perfurmes from Alfons waft into Kate’s nostrils and make her restless, and she reminds herself to concentrate. Looking ahead the dimly lit street is filled with several people - small children emaciated men, most of them with out homes, sleeping or just walking around - and it hurts Kate to see these people suffering in the shadows while England boasts it’s age of prosperity.

She recognizes that though the country has enough wealth to share, life is not equal.

The disgust she felt when she saw the pile of black corpses from previous chapters rise within her, and a feeling of neither sadness or bitterness filled her heart. This is when she realizes that since that initial incident, she had been so preoccupied with Alfons, that she didn’t properly have time to think about it, even though her heart is lighter feeling because of it. She decides that her heart must’ve drifted towards the easier way out.

Alfons: Kate.

Kate: …!?

Alfons calls her name from behind her and she recalls their feverish night. He had called her name many times that name when she was under the suggestion of being his lover.

Alfons: Haha, that’s a cute response.

Kate: I’ve got a lot to think about…..please don’t interrupt me.

Alfons: That’s why I interrupted you. So that you would think of me.

Kate:…..?

Alfons: There are a lot of things in this world that you can’t control, even if you face them squarely.

Alfons: Don’t you think it’s ridiculous to take single one of those things seriously, and get hurt?

Kate recalls that she’s been told something similar before.

FLASHBACK TO DINING ROOM BREAKFAST SCENE

Alfons: Well, you don’t need to know about such troublesome things.

Alfons: It doesn’t matter.

Alfons: Miss Kate, are you sure? You want to hide this.

FLASH BACK TO KITCHEN SCENE

Alfons: It’s better to be occupied with what feels good and pleasurable.

Alfons: Keep up the good work and keep your mind occupied on me.

FLASH BACK ENDS

Kate’s thoughts stop at this like she’s stumbled over a stone.

Ellis interrupts her thoughts by calling them both with a raised voice, ignoring the dispute behind him. Kate turns her face away from Alfons and back to the street. The screen jolts as someone says, “April Fools”, and the voice is accompanied by something spilling out onto the street. Several men in black cloaks are on the street who start to attack the slum dwellers, and a bizarre chase begins. It’s almost like they are hunting, swinging their weapons at the unarmed people. Kate is frozen as she describes it as something from literal hell.

Alfons: Hmm, it’s all rather frenzied.

Alfons: This is more of a massacre than a street riot.

Kate: How can you stay so calm?

Alfons: It’s a common sight on missions.

Ellis: Al & I will take them all into custody, you stay here Kate.

Ellis soon leaves them and Kate’s body begins to shake when she thinks about being left alone, even though she knows she should be. She tries to tell herself that she won’t be able to record their sins if she can’t look at them properly.

Alfons: Ahhhh, you poor thing.

Alfons’ hand touches the nape of her neck and tells her that what she is seeing is a play, and his voice flows through her mind like an eroding stream.

Alfons: That bright red thing is bloodstain.

Alfons: Tonight, it’s me and Ellis, and we’ve come to see a play.

Alfons: You will enjoy the breathless action in this seat….until we return.

Kate was in the theater when she was stuck with a floating sensation.

(I’ve never seen such an amazing performance…..)

The bloodbath that continued to unfold before her eyes was captivating. The blood spatter, the flying pieces of flesh, and even their expressions of anguish on the verge of death - they’re all very unlike a play. Alfons approaches and says that he’s off while she’s still mesmerized by the stage, and Kate tells him to go ahead. But going where? She came to see the play with him, didn’t she? When they look each other in the eyes, he tells her to kiss him and give him a lover’s pep talk.

(That’s right……Alfons and I are lovers.)

Kate: Yes, of course.

She offers a kiss on the lips with a smile as if she were seeing her lover off.

Kate: Mmmm…..

After their lips touch each other, he removes his hand from her nape. The stage floor was so soaked with blood that it was unrecognizable. When she sees that Alfons is going onto the stage too, she thinks it’s great at first, and then she notices Ellis on stage touching the heads of the targets and binding them. That’s when she sees that just a word from Alfons could cause a flurry of people to fall down as well.

Kate: And yet…..

Kate: It’s a very, very realistic play.

Even though she knew it was all an act the shrieks of the people made her heart shrink back, with fear and anxiety, her heart was beating very fast. When a knife almost grazed Alfons, she felt a chill crawl down her spine, even though it happened on a stage.

(I like to watch plays….)

(This one time……l hope it’s over soon.)

(I’m so scared….I don’t even want to look at it.)

(But why did I have to go to a play with you two tonight….?)

A sudden feeling of discomfort washes over her, and she squeezes at her heart over her clothes.

Alfons: Kate.

Kate: !

The boys come back to her and Alfons asks her, “How was our play?” Ellis is surprised and then says, “Oh, I see,” and plays along and asks her the same question. She says it was amazing, but she tells them that her heart felt crushed by anxiety. She couldn’t help but hug Alfons tightly to make sure her boyfriend was safe, which surprises his dumbass for some reason. Kate feels relieved, once she feels his heart beat and as she was about to let go of Alfons, he puts his arm around her.

Alfons: I apologize for any concern this may have caused you.

Alfons: …..I’ll stay by your side tonight, until you feel safe.

Premium Story:

After the blood soaked play, Alfons escorts Kate back to her room, but on the way back she’s struck with a strange sensation. She remembers passing through a street she’s unfamiliar with and she can’t figure out why she went to see a play with Ellis and Alfons. Back in the room, she finally breaks down and then asks Alfons, if what she watched was really a play or not. As soon as she asks, a thought popped into her head about the blood not being fake like stage play blood.

Alfons: Have you awakened already?

Alfons: You have a surprisingly stronger ego than I expected.

Kate: It was real.

When she realizes that not only she peacefully watched people die, but also almost Alfons being harmed, she was so shocked that she was speechless. She recalls the uncomfortable thoughts she had as she watched the play and the things she heard. Closing her eyes and covering her ears, Alfons embraces her warmly as if scooping her out of the cold darkness.

Alfons: It’s not your fault. It’s my fault isn’t it?

Kate: But I didn’t think anything of it.

Alfons: No ordinary person could imagine such a scene unless it was fiction.

Alfons: Likewise, I thought it would be entertaining to make it fiction.

Kate: …..

Kate remembers that she thought it was like play, and that she even applauded even though someone had died right in front of her. His voice filled with pity when he spoke to her.

Alfons: You really, really want to look at reality to the point of stupidity.

Kate: Because….If I don’t look….

Alfons: Is it because of your role as fairytale keeper?

Alfons: Isn’t it crappy to get a job because you were involved in an accident?

Kate thinks about how her life hangs in the balance if she doesn’t work properly, but she asks Alfons…

Kate: That’s not all,…. If you don’t look at reality properly, you won’t realize what’s important, will you?

Alfons: Such as?

Kate: Like, why are all those terrible things happening….

Alfons: You wouldn’t know that by observing a crime scene.

Kate: Is there anyone still breathing….who can be helped….!

Alfons: Haha, you’re going to save someone in that situation? You’ll just die as collateral damage.

Kate: But…..if you or Ellis had been stabbed…..I

Kate: Thinking of that as a play……I could’ve been there to help!

Alfons: ……

Kate: Isn’t that kind of scary….?

A rush of emotion begins to blur Kate’s vision not knowing if it was because of the fear of the scene or because she was alone protected by an illusion. Alfons gently strokes her hair just as a true lover would do.

Alfons: You’re too soft and vulnerable and yet….to try to face reality instead of running away…

Alfons: ….You’re an idiot, my dear.

Alfons: When I see someone that stupid, I can’t help but want to coddle them.

He touches her nape and tells her to come play with him for the night, calling her his little sweetheart. From that day forward, Kate becomes his exclusive fairytale keeper, but she tries to keep her distance from Alfons. Since Alfons is a quiet person, you never know when he will show up and she is anxious about that. Alfons pops up behind her and scares her when he says hello, and she immediately hides her neck with her hands. Alfons calls her cute, and tells her that he won’t do anything so she should come closer to him.

Of course, she doesn’t trust him and she tells him that she doesn’t want to do that and not to follow her, but Alfons tells her not to be such a bore. She recalls that since she’s tried to avoid Alfons, she’s gotten to know the other Crown members better - like Liam. A witty, talented actor, who sometimes does dangerous things with Alfons when he loses control. As for Harrison - although aloof, he often lends a helping hand with a casual attitude. And though is curse is that of the lying fox, she feels he his a gentle liar. Jude & Ellis - are often absent because they run a company. Jude is difficult to approach, but Ellis is gentle. Victor & William - she can never tell what the two founders of Crown are thinking, but you should never make enemies of them.

And about Alfons, when she asks about him, they all say: “He’s a pleasure seeking criminal who likes feeling good.”

In the kitchen, Kate feels tired after a long of information gathering on the Crown guys, so she is making tea and bread, and naturally Alfons pops up behind her without warning.

When she looks into the cup she asks what kind it is because it is blue, and Alfons explains that it’s an herbal tea called “Mallow Blue”, and over time it turns purple in color. Kate watches it curiously has the deep blue color slowly becomes a mottled vermilion. She’s never seen such a tea before and Alfons tells her with a smile to try it. She takes a sip and enjoys the faint aroma while remarking that it is tasty. Kate enjoys it so much that it puts her at ease, something she hasn’t felt in a while and so her feelings of cautiousness weaken.

Alfons: That’s good to hear. There’s one more interesting change, would you like to see it?

Kate: An interesting change….?

A few drops from a vial change the tea into a pale pink color. Kate thinks it’s beautiful - just like magic! It made her feel like a frolicking child again. Alfons sneers at her with a smile and asks if she’s recovered her mood a little bit? Kate replies that she’s been trying to avoid him and now that he finds her, this is what he does?

Alfons: Yes. I’d like to talk more with you.

Kate: ….!

Alfons pokes her on the nose which makes her heart skip a beat, and Kate tells him that if he wants to talk to her then not do that recalling the sweet sensation of them touching when she was under the perception of being his lover. So, every time he touches her, she tingles. Alfons sits at the table and starts drinking his portion of tea, and Kate mentions that it’s not polite to just invite himself to sit at the table and sip tea.

Elbert chimes in that he thinks that he’s in London somewhere….maybe. Kate thinks about his relationship with Elbert, and asks him why he let’s Alfons act on his own if he is Elbert’s attendant?

Elbert says it’s a little different than an attendant since Alfons is like a childhood friend who’s been with him since he was little. Kate is surprised since Elbert is an Earl, and while she doesn’t know the names of the noble families she wonders if they use the term “attendant” since Elbert has a higher title. She heard that because Elbert’s curse, he is searching for the most beautiful thing and Alfons is helping him.

Elbert always looks melancholy and Alfons always has a smile plastered on his face. It’s hard to believe the two are good friends. Elbert interrupts her thoughts by saying that he doesn’t hold Alfons’ actions in his hands and apologizes. She says it’s okay, and asks if they know where he usually goes and Roger says clubs, speakeasies, or opium dens. Roger asks if she’s worried about him and she denies it, but she wonders if Alfons genuinely laughs while in such places. If so, then how would he laugh? Not that she’s really curious about it. She slaps herself on her cheeks and Elbert asks if she is okay?

Kate wakes up the next morning and finds a shirtless Alfons sleeping next to her in bed. She freaks out and wakes Alfons up in the process who says, “Oh, is it morning already? Good morning, Kate.” She recalls how he came to her room the night before, kissed her and then they went to bed, but no lines were crossed at this point because he knew her body was too tired, but even so did they do other activities that only “lovers” do….she wasn’t sure.

Alfons: Did you have a good dream last night?

Kate: W-wha……from where….

The blurry line between dreams and reality were a shock to her, the fear from last night and the pleasurable kiss they shared was so real, but it still felt like a dream and she couldn’t help, but feel upset. Alfons laughs at her in amusement, and his smile makes her back away from him covering her naked body with the sheet.

Kate: Wow, did you do something to me?!

Alfons: Yes, I did. I did a lot of nice things.

Kate: I didn’t mean that…..!!

She frantically tries to remember why she thought that Alfons was her lover, knowing there must be some kind of trigger. She has a flashbacks to him in her room and the mission prior to that:

Kate: Worried?

Back to the present, she recalls him touching the nape of her neck and him whispering to her in both instances, and then recalls the pile of dead bodies before he touched her. She mentions that he used his ability on her, and surmises it’s the ability to use illusions. He admits to it and then commends her deductive skills while breaking out in applause. However, he clarifies that his ability is to rewrite perceptions by simply touching the nape of ones neck and whisper, and she asks why he did it to her?

Alfons: Why, because…..it’s fun of course?

Alfons: Poor little robin, thrown into a cesspool of evil.

Alfons: You’re the funniest toy I’ve ever seen.

Kate: …..!! (Kate slaps his cheek.)

Kate: Disgusting……

Alfons: I like your reaction, much better than last nights.

Alfons laughs without straightening his clothes and flutters off her bed, and tells her that if she ever wants to cry again then he’s there for her. She screams “No, thank you!” and throws a pillow at him. Afterwards, she heads to the dining room for breakfast and Alfons is sitting their nonchalantly. She wants to turn on her heel, but she resists and takes a seat. Victor starts talking to her about the mission from the night before, and she asks what happens after she was hypnotized. Did they call the police? William explains to her that in East End there have been many murders, arsons, abductions etc. and yet the police chalk it up to something that “always happens in the slums”.

Kate watches the expressions of those around her: Liam & Harrison listen quietly to the information, Elbert looks down melancholically at it, Alfons doesn’t seem interested in the subject at all, and then there’s those whose eyes sparkle with joy…….“That’s where Crown comes in,” says Victor. He explains that rumor has it that the administrators of the orphanage and poorhouse are responsible for the series of incidents. Last night’s mission was a little prelude to gather information. William says that they are trying to uncover the reason all the administrators are banding together; is it money, ideology, or pleasure? “What do you think”, he asks her.

Kate says she doesn’t know and she can’t of a single reason as to why someone would want to do that, as she recalls the scene feelings well up in her chest making her feel like she’s trapped in a dark place. Alfons chimes in, “Well, you don’t need to know. It’s a hassle.”

Alfons: Some children die in this world without anyone knowing. That means there are some who think they’re nothing more than rubbish to be cleaned off the street.

Kate is stunned by such a statement from him, is this a brazen dereliction of duty despite Crown being tasked with such cases? They stare at each other and he smiles.

Alfons: - It doesn’t matter.

(It doesn’t matter?!)

Alfons: Miss Kate, are you sure? You don't want to hide this.

He taps his own neck and Kate is like, “neck”? Hide what? Liam starts to ask, “Hey Kate, isn’t that….”, and Ellis follows up, “It’s a hickey.”

Kate: What?!

Ellis peeks at her from behind and she covers her neck with the palm of her hand.

Kate: Wh-wh-why....…

Alfons: Well, because……that’s what I did to you, isn’t it?

Kate: …!

Her cheeks flush and Harrison asks Alfons if he’s already touched her? Alfons laughs and asks Kate how he should answer that question, but she is so embarrassed that she can’t say anything. He taunts, “Aw, you can’t say anything?” But, it’s not possible of knowing what really happened last night, and while she is struggling as to what to say, Jude enters says, “What, ya already been devoured? I’m sorry to hear that,” and lets out a loud laugh.

Kate: I’ve not been devoured!

Alfons: That’s terrible…..that you kissed me so passionately, but you were just playing around with me……?

Kate: ….. Weren’t you the one who played with me?!

Liam: Ah.

Harrison: Ahhh.

Ellis: You just admitted it.

Kate: Huh—!?

Alfons: Pfft, ahaha! This is the best, Kate!

Alfons: Victor, will you make her my exclusive?

Kate: What do you mean my ”exclusive”?

Kate wants the situation from escalating any further and Alfons explains that they’d be partners, buddies, a tag-team or whatever she wants to call it. Victor thinks it’s a great proposal after their hot night together, and Alfons says that he must take responsibility for their one night stand, but Kate doesn’t sense any sign of sincerity in his voice. Victor says that he doesn’t care as long as Kate agrees to it, to which, she declines saying she hates the idea. Alfons threatens her with, “Don’t say! If you do, I don’t know if I’ll do that again or not.” She is upset, but it was also her fault for not kicking him out of her room last night as soon as he entered, and Victor warned her that many members of Crown were morally bankrupt.

William makes the suggestion that Kate only accompanies Alfons on his missions and outside of that, she doesn’t need to be around him. Kate still doesn’t like the idea, but it’s better than being with him 24/7, so she agrees and Alfons says it’s fine.

Alfons: Well…..I look forward to working with you, Kate.

Kate summarizes that after she learned of Crown’s secret, she is now staying at Crown castle for one month as Fairytale Master in order to record the sins of the cursed ones.

She has nightmares of the assassination she witnessed the night before, and loses sleep over it. She doesn’t want to lose to fear, so she pumps herself up to get out of bed, get ready to do her task so she can be free and go to her favorite place - the theater! 

She meets with Victor and discusses her assignment with him. She wonders to herself, (What makes a sin a sin?). Soon, Alfons makes an appearance and says that she’s very enthusiastic about her task. Kate agrees with him and tells him it’s because her life depends on it. He approaches her with an amused face, as if he’s found a new toy to play with. 

Kate smells a sweet fragrance coming from him. And mutters, “Perfume”? Victor laughs and asks if Alfons spent the night out again. Alfons affirms as much, and he mentions to Kate he notices she’s wary of him - like a cat. Kate takes a step back from him. 

Alfons: Come on, don’t bristle at me. Let’s be friends. I’ll give you a snack. 

Victor interjects between the sterile exchange of the two saying it’s natural for Kate to be wary of a man coming back home the way he has. 

Kate internally tries to rationalize that Alfons was perhaps secretly infiltrating the entertainment district for his work at Crown.

She ends up apologizing for her behavior as she doesn’t know him very well. He doesn’t really want or need her to apologize since she’ll only be there for a month anyway. He walks up to her and tells her that he likes cats. 

He whispers into her ear and blows into it. Kate jumps and he laughs at her reaction.

He leaves them so he can get sleep. Kate is surprised he will sleep during the day, and Victor mentions that’s just who he is. Kate realizes that Alfons might be someone dangerous.

Soon, it was the night of a mission that involved William, Roger and Alfons along with Kate. William instructs Roger to scout out the parameter, while he handles the assassination himself and he tells Alfons to be in charge of “blinding”. William asks Kate, if she has any questions for him. 

She asks what Alfons’ and Rogers abilities are. He says she should them herself. Roger tells her about his ability of being able to hear up to 100 yards away due to his curse of the Huntsman. She asks Alfons and he says: It’s. A. Secret. 

He explains it’s more fun for her to learn on her own. They leave and arrive at their destination- an orphanage. While orphanages are not unusual in London - especially in the slums - what’s happening at this particular orphanage is essentially slaughter.  

Kate soon sees the terrible sight of dead children that are piled on top of each other. She begins to feel sick, she covers her mouth and looks away, but the stench makes her face reality.

Alfons: Well, don’t be too shocked. Reality is always a tragedy, after all. 

Kate looks up when she hears Alfons voice, and then something warm touches her neck.

Alfons: You’re having a dream. A very pleasant dream.

Soon Kate is consumed by drowsiness and passes out. Roger grabs her before she collapses and complains to Alfons that it’s her job to witness their sins and to record them. Alfons says that if that’s the case, then she should write his sin as obstructing her work. William says it’s a shame that she won’t witness his sin tonight. 

Soon, the orphanage administrator arrives. William commands that they don’t move. He tells the administrator that if he answers his questions honestly, he’ll let him go. 

Kate wakes up in her room and tries to recall what happened. She recalls that she was having a pleasant dream, but soon recalls the missions, the masses of bodies and then jumps out of bed. Wondering if she passed out, she checks her body in the mirror, but doesn’t see any injuries. She also wonders if William condemned the one responsible and gets sick to her stomach thinking about what she seen.

There’s a knock on her door and Alfons greets her. When he sees her he says she looks pale and asks if she’s alright. She says she ok and then apologizes earnestly for passing out at work. Then she promises to do better next time as fairy tale master. 

Alfons laughs at her loudly saying she’s a foolishly serious person. He says he didn’t come for that, but rather because he knew it would be about time for her to wake up, and he was worried about her. He starts walking toward her, step by step. His face gets closer to hers, so close they could almost kiss. and soon she’s trapped in his arms.

Kate: Worried about me? 

Alfons: Yes, of course. 

His fingertips trace the nape of her neck.

Alfons: You’re my lover, after all. 

Kate: What?

The moment a whisper dropped in my ear, something twisted inside my mind.

(Oh, right.)

(Alfons is my lover.)

(The only person I can trust.)

(I will entrust my heart….to you.)

The presence of Alfons was poured into my chest where something had fallen out, and slowly it melts my heart from within.

Alfons: You don’t have to act tough in front of me, Kate. 

Kate: Ah…..

Gently stroking me, the threads of tension that had been tightened snapped, and tears slowly trickled down the corners of my eyes.

Kate: Alfons, I….

Alfons: You see, it’s okay to cry without holding back.

His gentle lips suck up my tears, and their warmth is pressed against my own lips.

After returning to Crown castle, Victor and crew greets Elbert, Kate, Roger and Alfons. After everyone reunites Victor dismisses everyone. El asks if he can speak to William and Victor about something without Kate.

Kate is worried about Elbert, but leaves so they can speak. He then asks them for the client list of those involved with the recent incident. William hands Elbert the dossier and remarks that the name El is looking for is listed on page 19 - the name of the person who requested Kate’s abduction.

Elbert: Jeffrey….

Victor's smile deepened as he heard the horrifying tone of his voice, as faint as a single drop of rain falling in the dark night.

Victor: That’s right. The butler of your mansion.

William: Among the clients on that list…
