Un manuscrito imperfecto

Desde que este blog echó a andar, allá por el 2012, es probablemente la primera vez que escribo en primera persona para contar algo que me atañe a mí, y no a algo que he leído o he visto. Creo que tiene sentido que lo haga aquí, el lugar donde empecé a compartir lo que escribía mucho, muchísimo antes de recibir el primer mail en el que un editor decía las palabras mágicas: «Enhorabuena, has sido seleccionada».

Años después, y con algún 'sí' más de por medio, otro correo me llegó al buzón cuando ya había aprendido a relativizar los rechazos (sí, es normal y es natural: ni todo es publicable ni todo lo publicable encaja en todas partes). En ese mail de 5 de septiembre de 2023, el equipo de Droids&Druids me informaba de que Es Teresa o el tiempo, la novelette que había mandado a la segunda convocatoria de su premio de fantaciencia, era la segunda finalista de la edición. El primer premio fue para Ana Saiz por Amanecer en Benidormiens, y el segundo para Isabel Pedrero por Arena. Podéis encontrar sus obras aquí y aquí. De la anterior convocatoria surgieron Puedes llamarme Espátula, de Celia Corral-Vázquez (¡que ya va por la segunda edición!), y La Obsoletadora, de Alejandro Rodríguez Tárraga.

Pese a que la ganadora de la edición fue Ana, el equipo de Droids&Druids nos comunicó a las dos finalistas que también estaban interesadas en nuestras obras. En mi caso, sin embargo, había que hacer cambios. Inés Galiano me sentó en una cafetería de Zaragoza durante la Hispacon de 2023 y me dijo, con toda la sinceridad del mundo y mirándome a los ojos: «Nos ha gustado mucho la novela, pero el tercer acto hay que arreglarlo. ¿Sabes lo que es el narrador borracho?». Lo cierto es que no lo sabía, pero lo entendí de inmediato porque no era la primera vez que alguien me llamaba la atención por mezclar perspectivas de personajes distintos en un mismo pasaje. Unas semanas después recibí el informe de lectura sobre Es Teresa o el tiempo. Al jurado le había gustado la obra, los personajes y el worldbuilding, pero todos coincidían en que el desenlace era apresurado y había escenas confusas.

¿Se puede arreglar un manuscrito imperfecto? Esa pregunta me atormentó durante semanas desde que fui consciente de que, si Teresa iba a salir a la luz, había que hacer cambios, muchos cambios. Escritores como Alejandro me convencieron de que no solo era enteramente posible, sino que hacerlo me iba a llevar a escribir una versión mucho mejor del texto. Él mismo cuenta en el artículo que acompaña su novela cómo pasó por este proceso con La Obsoletadora.

Porque la primera versión de Es Teresa o el tiempo era una novela con errores. Errores técnicos, de esos que no dependen de la percepción subjetiva de quien te lee y que yo misma vi cuando, meses después, abrí el archivo. Imprimí el manuscrito, me lo leí de principio a final. Subrayé las partes que había que cambiar, pensé en posibles soluciones. En un mes y poco, tenía un manuscrito totalmente nuevo y con casi el doble de palabras que el primero. Pude contar la historia de Fía además de la de Manuel, el protagonista de la novela. Pude contar la de Pina, una teckel droide que cruzó los campos de Castilla huyendo de la KGB y ahora es una excelente perra de compañía.

La lección más valiosa que aprendí en este proceso es que la mayoría de manuscritos con fallos pueden arreglarse si tienes a alguien que te los señale y logras entender en qué consisten. El camino tienes que encontrarlo tú y ningún editor debería despejarlo por ti; si lo hacen, te van a privar de tener un resultado mucho mejor y más coherente con las historias que quieres contar. Eso es algo que también aprendí de Covadonga Ballestero, autora de El verde de los zombis y, además, una excelente editora de mesa.

Por supuesto, rehacer algo ya hecho y terminado no es una cosa que, en general, vaya con el signo de los tiempos. Vivimos en un mundo donde las cosas no se arreglan: se tiran y se compra una nueva. En el caso de Es Teresa o el tiempo, los arreglos no eran cosméticos. Es probable (y me da un poco de vergüenza admitirlo) que no hubiera tenido la fuerza ni las ganas para hacerlos de no ser porque al otro lado tenía un contrato de edición. Ahí (y en muchas otras cosas) tengo que agradecerle a Droids&Druids que confiara en mí para afrontar este proceso.

Otro día hablaré de las circunstancias en las que escribí Es Teresa o el tiempo, íntimamente ligadas a la vida política española los últimos dos años, y de qué manera eso me abocó a un ritmo de escritura que, aunque no fue frenético, si fue un poco a contrarreloj. La novela no reposó; no quiero decir con ello que, si hubiera reposado, yo hubiera visto por mí misma sus fallos; pero probablemente sí habría llegado a la convocatoria un poco más pulida. Es también otra cosa que quería contar teniendo en cuenta que Droids&Druids ha abierto otra convocatoria, esta vez para novelettes de hopepunk, hasta septiembre. Uno siempre debe enviar la mejor versión de lo que puede hacer, eso es así. Pero ocurre que a veces esa mejor versión no es la mejor versión de la obra, sino la que puede conseguir en un espacio y tiempo en concreto. Así que si tienes miedo, dudas o te cuestionas... No temas. Estarás en buenas manos. La mayoría de las veces, es posible arreglar un manuscrito imperfecto.

Es Teresa o el tiempo ya ha entrado en fase de corrección y se publicará en otoño. Seguramente aún hay cosas por mejorar (algunas de ellas, señaladas por mi amigo Javier en un PDF que tengo miedo a abrir pero que pronto abriré, durante la corrección). Pero el día en el que Inés me envió un mensaje diciendo que había terminado de leer la nueva versión de la novela y que creía que había hecho un muy buen trabajo, no solo me sentí aliviada. Me sentí feliz. Sigo teniendo otros miedos, pero este, en concreto, lo he superado. Vendrán más historias y más manuscritos imperfectos, pero ahora sé que tengo las herramientas para arreglarlos. Si estás leyendo esto y te encuentras en esa misma situación, créeme: tú también las tienes. Solo necesitas rodearte de las personas adecuadas y hacer un último esfuerzo.

“Me pesa la cabeza”, intervención artística realizada por la asociación AFDA, el colectivo Amor de Primas y la ilustradora y tatuadora Bárbara Rebel, en la que reflexionamos sobre el impacto de los determinantes de género en salud mental. Utilizando el collage como lenguaje artístico, lxs participantes de esta sesión intervenimos las diferentes semiesferas que lo componen, explorando cómo nos sentimos cuando decidimos no seguir las reglas que operan respecto al género en nuestra sociedad, cuando decidimos actuar en base a lo que necesitamos y no en función de lo que se espera de nosotrxs. En estas burbujas podemos ser quienes queremos ser, somos permisivxs y amables con nosotrxs mismxs y con lxs demás. También decidimos dejar fuera de ellas las reglas, las normas, estereotipos... aquello que nos condiciona y atraviesa por nuestro género, aquello que hace que “nos pese la cabeza”. Todas estas burbujas salen de la máquina de bolas, de ella surgen todos estos lugares donde podemos permitirnos ser quienes queramos. Dentro de la máquina se alojan las infinitas posibilidades y al accionarla es cuando estos espacios seguros, estos lugares libres de reglas y mandatos se  materializan en forma de esfera. AFDA es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro destinada al tratamiento de la ansiedad, estrés, depresión y los momentos adaptativos complicados y a la promoción del bienestar anímico, basada en valores como la accesibilidad, la asequibilidad, el apoyo mutuo y la cooperación, que sitúa a los cuidados como elemento nuclear de las relaciones. Amor de Primas es un colectivo autogestionado de Zaragoza, creado por Inés Ballesteros y Mélanie Aliaga en 2015, que cree en el fanzine como herramienta que ayuda a crear redes y compartir experiencias, apelando a la creatividad, creando otros modos de ser, de compartir, de comunicarnos y apoyarnos. La sesión “Me pesa la cabeza” fue financiada por el Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza y forma parte del proyecto BienestARTE de AFDA, diseñado con el objetivo de trabajar la promoción del bienestar emocional comunitario a través del arte y la cultura, generando espacios públicos de diálogo, empoderamiento, inclusión y producción de subjetividades.

The Silver Coast of Portugal, also known as the Costa de Prata is a region in Portugal that stretches from Lisbon to Figueira da Foz, though on some searches, the area can be defined as far north as Porto. Severiano Ballesteros was involved in the design of the golf course at the Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort, where he took advantage of the undulating terrain to produce a 6,400 metre course that incorporates the natural surroundings and amazing sunsets.

There are other courses and each are within easy distance of each other, meaning on a golfing break you can take advantage of different courses, and of course, the wonderful food and wine at the clubhouses.

Which ever course you choose you will be able to enjoy year round, top class golf with less crowds and 5-star accommodation, whether you choose the the royal Óbidos spa and golf resort Hotel or the 5-star beach front ocean view apartments. The silver Coast is the new name in luxury golf resorts.

Beaches

The coastline stretches for over 100 kms, from Lisbon to past Figueira da Foz and can provide for any type of requirement.

Far less crowded and developed than its more famous neighbour the Algarve, the Silver Coast has provided holidays to the Portuguese for many years, but now it is becoming more popular with international travellers looking for beauty without endless souvenir shops and bars selling cheap beer.

The choice is almost endless from Cascais, Lisbon where you can enjoy lazing by the ocean and wandering to the wonderful cafes, that will serve a delicious fresh seafood extravaganza with wonderful wines through to Nazaré,a traditional fishing village that still catches and dries sardines and other fish on the beach. You can see the old women of the town selling them in their traditional clothes.

In Nazaré take the funicular from the beach up to Sitio where you can have the most wonderful panoramic views of the area.

If you would prefer more activity, some of the best surfing beaches are on the silver Coast, with the Big Wave Tour being held in Nazaré, which currently holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed. Peniche is another famous surfing destination.

Sao Martinho do Porto is an excellent beach for chold friendly swimming, sailing, (kite) surfing, canoeing, etc. and the nautical club can offer lessons and equipment hire.

If diving is your chosen water sport, the Berlengas archipelago, a short boat ride from Peniche has some perfect diving spots with hidden caves. Or maybe you would like to go deep sea, big game or even shark fishing, all available from Cascais.

Whatever you are looking for from a beach holiday, the Silver Coast has it all.

Architecture and monuments

The Silver Coast of Portugal has no shortage of historical monuments, castles and palaces to visit. If you are looking for a break that can offer culture along with sunshine and relaxation this is the place to be.

All along this coast line there are impressive palaces, castles and monuments, some of which are famous worldwide such as Sintra, where nature mixes perfectly with the palaces and monuments, to make this one of the most impressive areas in Portugal, so much so the area, not just one building, was granted UNESCO world heritage status.

Start with a visit to the historic town centre where you can enjoy regional or international cuisine, then visit one of the many palaces such as Pena Palace, famous for its bright colours or Quinta da Regaleira.

The Quinta da Regaleira, is one of the most quirky palaces you can visit, with many follies’ in the gardens and far reaching views. Designed and built Between 1898 and 1913 by Italian architect Luigi Manini, the building and gardens are more of a work of art than a traditional palace.

If you are in the Lisbon area a trip to Mafra to visit the impressive Palácio Nacional de Mafra is highly recommended.

A little further along the coast from Lisbon is one of the most famous cities, Óbidos, close to the golf and the beaches, one of the most well preserved and picturesque, medieval walled towns in Portugal. The streets are narrow and cobbled with an array of shops, restaurants and white washed houses.

The castle is intact and there is the opportunity to book your stay there, in the Pousada do Castelo de Óbidos, where you can enjoy regional gastronomy served in an atmosphere of grandeur, with breath-taking views. There are not many castles that provide accommodation to this standard.

Drive a little further and you will find Alcobaça with the UNESCO world heritage site of the Monastery of Alcobaça, the monastery is one of the most magnificent Gothic monuments in the country and is home to the tombs of Pedro and Inés, Portugal’s famous and tragic lovers. This town has many fine buildings with a large square to sit and marvel at the monastery whilst enjoying a light lunch.

This is just a small selection of the stunning cultural and historical monuments, your trip to the Silver Coast will uncover many more.

Food and drink

Eating on the Silver Coast can be a culinary masterpiece, with freshly caught fish and seafood served directly to your plate or indulge in some of the traditional meat dishes, although vegetarian and vegan options are not totally mainstream (yet), many restaurants will have a dish available or be willing to assist.

The choice of restaurants on the Silver Coast is extensive, from restaurants in castles, small intimate eateries tucked away from the crowds or restaurants with far reaching ocean views, there is something to please every taste.

But if you are looking for something even more luxurious there are no less than 7 Michelin starred restaurants in Lisbon and Cascais such as Eleven, which is set high on a hill in Parque Eduardo VII. A sophisticated and contemporary restaurant that features beautiful views of Lisbon.

However, there are a couple of must eat foods on any visit and these are the Octopus (polvo) which can come in a variety of styles, a light lunch of octopus salad or as an evening meal, grilled and sautéed in olive oil.

Many dishes in Portugal use an extensive amount of olive oil and there is a simple reason for this, the olive oil in Portugal is one of the best in the world.

The other food that you must try and it is simply the olive oil itself, the taste is sublime, whether you are eating a meal cooked in the oil or just enjoying petiscos with a glass of wine.

The olives are a speciality of each restaurant and will come with a great variety of flavourings, though just enjoying the locally produced olives in their own oil with a chunk of crusty bread is one of the biggest treats with a nice local wine.

Which brings us nicely on to the wine and speciality drinks in Portugal. No trip to the Silver Coast is complete without sampling the Ginja (a speciality of Óbidos, Lisbon and Alcobaça). This is a sour cherry liqueur, where the Ginja berries are infused in alcohol and then sugar added. The drink can be served with or with out the cherries and is often served in a small dark or white chocolate cup.

Portugal may not be the top of your list for vineyards, but there are many excellent wines in Portugal with many being produced on the Silver Coast.

As the Silver Coast is on the Atlantic, with many micro climates, the weather has helped to produce unique flavours of the grapes. Bringing with it some very special wines, but these are not produced in great amounts, such as the high quality and popular Bucelas and the Colares

Accommodation

No holiday is complete unless you have the perfect accommodation and on the Silver Coast, you will not be short of choice. But what sort of accommodation will suit you best? This will depend on your personal choice and circumstances, are you taking a trip alone, with a family or as a couple? As the Silver Coast rises in popularity, so does the choice of accommodation.

There is no shortage of 5 star hotels in the Lisbon area, but now you can move further afield and find 5-star luxury all along the Silver Coast with spa hotels, golf resorts, ocean view hotels or even manor houses and castles.

But often a great choice will be a private villa, if you are not a fan of catering for your self, many will offer full maid service, chef service and spa facilities. If you are looking for activities, many villas will also provide facilities for activities such as guided tours, yoga or water sports activities.

If you prefer a mixture, then there are boutique apartments/hotels available, where you can have a private apartment, in a very small complex, but with added benefit of meals provided (if chosen) and spa facilities available on site. But with private areas where you can relax away from other residents.

100 días para enamorarse fue la gran ficción del año. La novela de Underground protagonizada por Carla Peterson, Juan Minujín, Nancy Dupláa y Luciano Castro mantuvo su calidad durante los siete meses que estuvo al aire y el público la acompañó, siendo uno de los programas más vistos del día en cada una de sus emisiones.

La tira emitida por Telefe no sólo entretuvo, sino que se metió con temas sociales que impactaron en los espectadores y dejó momentos memorables que quedarán en el recuerdo de los televidentes.

Esta noche se emite el último episodio y por eso repasamos diez escenas inolvidables de la novela:

1. Fidel da una clase contra el bullying. El profesor interpretado por Michel Noher dejó unas cuantas lecciones memorables dentro del aula. En esta, reflexiona junto a los adolescentes sobre los peligros de la discriminación y los prejuicios.

2. Primer beso Jemma. Juan y Emma fueron una de las parejas más queridas por el público y su primer acercamiento tiene en Youtube más de 15 millones de reproducciones. En la casa de Antonia, los jóvenes se animan y se besan por primera vez

  3. Inés y Florencia Vs. Javier. Sin dudas uno de los personajes más graciosos y que más carcajadas despertó en el público fue el interpretado por Jorgelina Aruzzi. En esta escena, Inés y Florencia (Manuela Pal) se unen en contra de Javier (Juan Gil Navarro) para definir cómo seguirá su relación después de haberse destapado su doble vida.

    4. Laura y Gastón en el retiro. Además de tener buenas escenas de romance y de drama, la dupla de Juan Minujín y Carla Peterson funciona muy bien en la comedia. Todo el capítulo en el que van a un retiro dejó situaciones muy graciosas y hasta un desnudo de Minujín.

    5. Primer beso Paudel. Paul y Fidel es otra de las parejas elegidas por el público. Esta escena quedará para el recuerdo de los fanáticos: después de varias dudas, Fidel se deja llevar por lo que le pasa con Paul y tienen su primer encuentro.

    6. Juan se corta el pelo. Una de las escenas más emocionantes de toda la tira. Después de asumir su identidad, Juan decide que es hora de cortarse el pelo y lo hace con la ayuda de su mamá y la mirada tierna de su papá. La actuación de Maite Lanata, Nancy Dupláa y Luciano Castro traspasa la pantalla y logra hacer llorar a todos.

    7. Laura y Antonia drogadas. Más allá de las parejas, el gran vínculo de 100 días para enamorarse fue el de estas dos amigas que demostraron que a pesar del paso del tiempo y de sus diferencias, las relaciones de amistad nos salvan y contienen en muchas situaciones de la vida. Tuvieron escenas tristes, alegres y emocionantes…pero también algunas que nos hicieron morir de risa.

    8. Charla de género en el colegio. 100 días para enamorarse tocó temas que se debatieron todo el año como, por ejemplo, la legalización del aborto. En esta escena con Sandra Mihanovich como la especialista invitada, los alumnos del Apolo tienen una clase de género donde se exponen conceptos como cisgénero y transexualidad y se habla sobre la Ley de identidad de género.

    9. Charla Gino y Fidel. El personaje interpretado por Osvaldo Laport tuvo problemas para aceptar la verdadera identidad de su nieto, pero finalmente logró abrir su cabeza. En esta charla con Fidel, ambos reflexionan sobre la importancia de dejar atrás los prejuicios.

    10. Charla sincera entre Bea, Laura y Paul. Marita Ballesteros y Mario Pasik se lucieron como Bea y Miguel y junto a Carla Peterson y Ludovico di Santo dejaron una escena conmovedora. La familia tiene que salir adelante contra el alzheimer de Miguel y buscan quedarse con las cosas buenas dentro de una situación muy dolorosa.
