Notes from the land of the rising sun
If you think the Paris subway is a marvel, wait until you step into Tokyo's intricate underground labyrinth. The Japanese subway system is an experience that best reflects the essence of Japanese culture and efficiency.
The first thing you notice when you step into a Tokyo subway station are the orderly queues - on the escalators, at ticket counters, at entry and exit gates, and while boarding trains. The Japanese have transformed queuing into a well-organized and methodical art form, much unlike the Indians for who queueing is a rather abstract and a largely inscrutable exercise. This queue discipline extends beyond transportation to restaurants, take-away counters, and billing counters, where you find patrons patiently waiting their turn for service.
Tumblr media
Another striking feature of Tokyo's subways is the pervasive silence. Compared to the prattle on the Paris metro or the pandemonium on the Indian metros, the Japanese subway is a quiet sanctuary. The Japanese are a quiet people who keep to themselves during public transit, their animated conversations are reserved for meal times. Food, often accompanied by drinks, is a more communal experience that's filled with lively discussions and noisy chatter. On buses, trains, and the subway, one finds commuters reading novels, manga, news, diaries, or watching anime or otherwise engaged on their phones. This quietude carries onto the roads, streets, and other public places. There's no honking and people talk in whispers in most places, except of course in eateries. Most Japanese folks like to go out with their friends and colleagues or have social gatherings in eateries. They love to take their time during such meals, which are almost always accompanied by drinks. The conversations are loud, full of banter and laughter.
Tumblr media
At every station, you also have a helpdesk that actually works. We used these at many stations and were very impressed by the service we got. While returning from Kanazawa to Tokyo, our Shinkansen (bullet train) developed a snag. We were informed on board about this by the railway staff. They dropped us off at Nagano, where more railway staff were waiting to assist us. They put us on a train to Matsumoto, where more staff were waiting to help. We were put on a train to Shiojiri, where another set of helpful staff put us on a slow Azusa train to Shinjuku. During the whole time, everyone was apologetic and insisted that we collect our refund for the Shinkansen from the Shinjuku station. We had booked our tickets through Klook, so weren't really sure if we were eligible for a refund and how and when (if at all), we would get any refund. To our surprise, the lady at the helpdesk counter gave us an almost complete refund in cash, no questions asked. She said that they had been informed of the Shinkansen glitch and were expecting passengers such as us to alight at Shinjuku. She also profusely apologized for the inconvenience. At how many Indian stations can you expect this service?
In contrast to India's metro stations, where photography is 'strictly prohibited', one is free to click away in Japanese subways. We didn't find a single place where photography wasn't allowed or one had to pay extra charges just to click.
Tumblr media
Respect for individuals is on display everywhere and in everyone. Courteous gestures greet one at every turn and we were quite surprised to find people bowing to us even for trivial interactions. We also learnt to bow in return with gratitude. Starting from clearly designated 'foreign friendly taxis' to courteous strangers going out of their way to assist you, you feel truly welcomed in Japan. You also feel as if you are a celebrity when you step into an eatery, for as you step in, the staff, including the chefs and the kitchen staff, boisterously greet you with a loud shout. Google what this means and you'll see what I mean.
At restaurants, you are invariably served ice cold water with ice cubes in long tumblers. This is the way of life even in cold winters. You can, however, also order warm/hot sake that really fires you up on wintry nights. While Tokyo offers a plethora of culinary delights, vegetarians might feel the need to seek out specific eateries. The cuisine draws heavily on raw food, mostly seafood, with minimal oil and spices. This is where the super helpful convenience stores like 7-11 and Family Mart offer a variety of options, including liquor. Japanese convenience stores have more variety of liquor than one finds in the regular wine shops back home.
Tumblr media
That the Japanese are punctual is well known, but their service levels are at a different level altogether. At Kanazawa, we requested for a taxi at the hotel reception which was on the first floor. The receptionist made a call to a local cab company and informed that a taxi would arrive in three minutes. True to their word, by the time we descended the stairs and reached the ground floor, the taxi was already waiting for us. In both Kyoto and Tokyo, we noticed many shops displaying merchandise outside their doors and well out of their sight. In several grocers' vegetables were left unattended with price boards. People leave their umbrellas outside when entering shops. We also observed most households leaving their stuff outside at night.
Despite the absence of dustbins, Tokyo remains remarkably clean. Littering is a rare sight, thanks to the civic sense instilled in its residents. Further, there's no expectation of a tip for any service that you hire. Taxis and restaurants return you the exact change and you are expected to pocket your change before leaving. In fact, tipping might be considered offensive in many places. Should you run out of coins, there are machines installed in most public places that take your notes and provide you with coins. To help you tender exact change, these machines are also installed in all buses. By the way, the Japanese bus drivers are smartly dressed, polite, and greet you when you pay and get off. Compare that with the Indian buses and our drivers.
An ubiquitous presence throughout Japan are the vending machines. The offer everything, from beverages to snacks, and refreshments to souvenirs. Game arcades are also quite popular, lined up in most tourist locations. We spent a fortune on the vending machines, collecting souvenirs that are quite cheap but of exquisite quality. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kanazawa are filled with rows and rows of these vending machines stretching on for blocks altogether.
Tumblr media
Tokyo is unbelievably busy at all times of the day and night. The trains are always filled and the stations are always crowded. Folks are either going to work or returning from work at all hours. Whether the well-groomed crowd of Ginza, the diverse crowd of Shibuya, the aloof funky of Shinjuku or the dignified crowd of Monzennakacho, the residents of each district have their own way to go about their lives. School kids, even when returning late, show impeccable discipline, immersed in their phones, reading manga, playing games, or watching anime. There were many places in the US and in France where we felt unsafe during our travels. The less said about India, the better. In comparison, we never felt unsafe throughout our visit in Japan, not even for a moment.
This trip to Japan has been a revealation to say the least. From the land of the rising sun, arigato gozaimas.

INDIANS OF TUMBLR hiii, I'm back with a request for some solid discourse / discussion, please :)
So it's about this whole underwear-burning nonsense that's going on. Here's what happened.
TLDR : An Indian men's rights group is protesting against the "women-centric gender-biased laws" in India, referring specifically to provisions in the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act of 2005, rape legislation, and alimony and maintenance laws. They have a range of issues, including "women being considered only as victims and men only as oppressors," the law being "skewed in women's favour in practice," women having "more rights and getting special treatment," demanding gender-neutral laws, and a separate civil body for "petty marriage disputes." They also say women take advantage of these laws by making false accusations against men in order to extract money or property. Men's rights activists around the country are supporting the NCM India Council in this move.
Now, I could tear their argument apart statement by statement - there's a lot of dum-dum in here. I can't believe they're complaining that women get free train tickets, and a separate metro compartment - for gods' sake, it's not like the women's metro compartment actually has only women in it. At least, not in my city. And as for women taking advantage of men, the proportion of such cases compared to the number of actual victims is tiny. Really, that man's statement is making me see red.
The only part that's tripping me up is the non-gender neutral nature of our laws. With the sociocultural context and long patriarchal history, it seems absurd to be inclusive of men rape victims, I guess - but ideally, the law should be inclusive, right?
I just want to understand different perspectives about this (as long as they aren't misogynistic). Are there any avenues where men's rights are truly an issue in India? Is there any other dimension to this where men are genuinely sidelined? I consider myself a feminist, and so I'd like to know if there's anything I'm missing. And asking y'all on Tumblr is more civil than arguing in Instagram and Reddit comment sections😭
Oh, and feel free to rant about this idiotic protest as well🤓
Some more articles I looked at. These also feel real petty, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt :
A men's rights group in Pune staged protests
Older article about women taking advantage of men legally
Any and all respectful insight is appreciated, y'all🥺 (as long as it isn't misogynistic. Please don't be misogynistic)

The Yellow Face
This is the third tale from Memoirs i.e. the second published volume.
"The Park" is likely Regent's Park. This was also home to what is now called ZSL London Zoo, which features in Dracula as well.
Yellow fever is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Not something mainland Britain really has a problem with - gnats and midges are more our thing. As a result, we do not routinely vaccinate here, although you can get a jab for travelling to affected areas.
But Victorian audiences would have been familiar with it via reports from the Empire.
Like Lee in "The Twisted Lip", Pinner and Norbury are two small communities that became suburbs due to urban development in the first half of the 20th century and are both in Greater London.
Pinner itself had a 'Tube' station; the Metropolitan Railway having reached there in 1885. Sitting in Zone 5, the Met bought up the land around the railway and then developed it, later using the branding "Metro-land" and selling housing to middle-class commuters. This would be in the future though.
Norbury sits on the London to Brighton main line and is served by stopping trains from London Bridge or (in peak hours) Victoria. It sits in Zone 3, giving you an idea of just how far inside the city it now is - less than seven miles from Charing Cross. The line would later be increased to four tracks in 1903 and electrified in 1925. You could get a train from Victoria in 20 minutes at the time. It's around the same today or a bit longer, although much more frequent.
The Crystal Palace was a huge modular iron and glass building, originally built in Hyde Park for the 1851 Great Exhibition and then moved to Penge, where it served as an entertainment and exhibition venue. It burnt down in 1936, but not before giving its name to the park, the neighbourhood and the Premier League football club, one of the founding members of the Football Association, although the latter now play at Selhurst Park.
Georgia's ban on interracial marriage was introduced in 1750 i.e. before the Declaration of Independence and struck down by the Supreme Court in 1967 in Loving vs. Virginia.
The British for their part did not ban interracial marriage in Great Britain. They did so in India, along with in the pre-independence Americans and there was plenty of legally allowed discrimination, the so-called "colour bar" in Great Britain itself.
Your main issue would be societal backlash in any event - while Jules Verne has Phileas Fogg marry an Indian woman at the end of Around the World in Eighty Days, he makes it clear more than once that she looks like a white woman. So, yeah.

Recent riots have cast a shadow over France's beloved Bastille Day national holiday, which marks the start of the French revolution, with fireworks displays called off around the country, outraging some conservatives.
Fireworks sales have been banned over their use against security forces in riots which erupted at the end of June after police shot dead a teenager during a traffic stop, reviving anger over racism and police brutality.
France's most intense urban violence in nearly two decades rocked the country for a week, with thousands of cars torched, public property destroyed, and over 3,700 rioters arrested, many of them minors.
The western Paris suburb of Nanterre, where 17-year-old Nahel M. was killed by police, is one of many municipalities to call off their annual Bastille Day fireworks displays for fear of further unrest.
"We can't celebrate our national day because of hooligans, I believe things are much worse than people think," David Lisnard, the head of the French Mayors' Association (AMF) told broadcaster France Inter on Wednesday.
Lisnard, a member of the opposition conservative Republicans (LR) party, said the cancellations were "a sign of a very deep unease in French society".
President Emmanuel Macron will celebrate Bastille Day, which marks the fall of the Bastille prison in 1789, seen as igniting the French Revolution, with ally Indian President Narendra Modi at the traditional central Paris military parade under heavy security.
The two leaders are also set to watch the main Paris fireworks display at the Eiffel Tower, which has been maintained, after nightfall on Friday.
- 'Calm summer needed' -
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Wednesday that an "exceptional" 45,000 police would be deployed on the nights of July 13 and 14 -- as many as at the height of the riots.
"What we're trying to avoid... is a resurgence of these violent episodes, through preventive measures as well as by an increased police presence on the streets," Darmanin told reporters.
Police would be "specially equipped and organised" to face urban violence and backed up by specialist units, helicopters, drones and armoured vehicles, he added, while 34,000 firefighters would be on duty.
Darmanin also said Wednesday that a march against police violence, planned for Saturday, would not be authorised.
This also went for "any demonstration with a direct link to the riots" until Saturday, he said.
Over 150,000 heavy-duty fireworks similar to those shot at police and buildings during the riots have been seized in recent days, Darmanin said, many of them imported from EU countries such as Spain and Poland.
The move to ban the sale of fireworks over the weekend was challenged by businesses selling them, who asked the State Council -- a court dealing with citizens' complaints against authorities -- to overturn the decision. A ruling is due by Thursday.
Buses and trams, meanwhile will stop running at 10:00 pm on both nights, he added, although metro lines and suburban trains are to continue until late.
Macron's office said Wednesday that he would not be making a televised address as planned on July 14, when he had hoped to sum up the achievements of a 100-day reset after the passage of a bitterly contested pension reform.
"If violence flares up again this summer, the effects will be very negative... he needs a calm summer to get back to reforms" from September, political scientist Bruno Cautres told AFP at the weekend.
- 'Loss of confidence' -
Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally and Macron's challenger in two presidential elections, slammed the decision by some towns to cancel July 14 festivities.
"Can you believe that in the great democracy of France, we are giving up on our national day because of the fear generated by potential violence or potential riots by some people?" she added, calling the move "an admission of a total loss of confidence in the state".
She used her remarks in Beauvais, a town north of Paris, to criticise the cost of rebuilding burned-out public buildings and to suggest that the rioters pay for the damage, even if it took "the rest of their lives."
Commenting on plans to fine underage rioters' families, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Sunday that the government would "evolve the law... if the existing legal framework is insufficient."
Prosecutors meanwhile said Wednesday that 12 people had been arrested in connection with an attack on a mayor's home near Paris during the riots, when a car was rammed into the house, causing a fire.

June 11 - Himeji-Jo
Today we took a trip to Himeji-Jo, a castle about an hour and a half away by train. I woke up around 7:45, had some breakfast, and showered before the quiz and morning lecture. The train ride was long, but I took the opportunity to listen to Metro Boomin’s new album, released in conjunction with the new SpiderMan movie. It was an okay album. Upon arrival, I knew we had to have a good lunch. I searched for nearby restaurants, and one was calling my name: the local Indian joint, of course. I used my incredible convincing skills to get the rest of the squad on board with my plan, but to be honest, it didn’t need much convincing. The food was pretty good, but the Indian place we had in Tokyo was better. Unfortunately, Sam had a bit of an upset stomach after the Indian meal, and at the castle, we were forced to leave him behind to fend for himself in the bathroom as we trudged on. Brave man.
The castle was gorgeous. The architecture and physical layout was clearly indicative of a secure, safeguarded location intentionally designed to ward off bad actors. The views from the top floor were gorgeous, giving us a wonderful panoramic view of Kyoto. One student remarked that they wished the castle had an RB on top. Interesting. We made our way down and returned back to the hotel promptly. On the train ride, I got some good sleep apart from being woken up a few times by the train stopping or by surrounding passengers. Going into the long ride, I was worried that my SUICA card would be nearly completely used up, but I still have about 2,500 yen remaining on it. Not great, not terrible. In the evening, Sebastian, Nico, Zander, Raj and I grabbed dinner at a pork bowl place. The food was okay, but thankfully, it was very cheap. We finished off our appetites with some Burger King/McDonalds.
Academic Reflection
The castle readings provided some insight into how castle towns provided a basis for a lot of the economic growth present in modernizing Japan during the 1600s. At the time, Japan was one of the most rapidly modernizing and urbanizing countries in the world! Today, having visited the castle, I can say that the same dichotomy is present when comparing the castle's antique design with the modern buildings and infrastructure surrounding it. This makes for a beautiful city that offers all the necessary and desired nearby amenities to its residents while also providing something of value towards the country's history, interested tourists, and residents looking for a closer tie with their country's roots.
Throughout our journey in Japan, I have noticed the great prevalence of historical architecture like parks, shrines, and temples directly adjacent to shiny, modern buildings and dense, walkable infrastructure. This preservation of so many historical sites and attractions, like the castle we visited today, is incredibly important to preserving the history and nature for a country as old as Japan. I'm glad that Japan does a good job of properly maintaining historical structures while simultaneously investing in new developments. Oftentimes, in the U.S., activist protection of historical sites has been abused by people looking to stop all new developments and limit neighborhood diversity, walkability, and affordability. I'm glad Japan seems to suffer far less from that problem.

We are in our next hotel in DC! It's cute! Def not as new and fancy as the one we spent the last two nights in. But it's got charm.
Last night was a little rough for me. I could not turn my brain off and I was struggling. I would be up until 2 and wasn't having a good time.
I was eventually able to sleep but it wasn't good sleep. I was up half the night. But I couldn't even stay asleep in the morning.
James got up and went to run some errands. Deposited the checks we got as gifts. And mailed out marriage license.
I got up and was. Aching. Today was a little tough because I was so sore. And being tired didn't help.
The soda James brought me last night helped me perk up. There was something in my eye though and it hurt a lot and my eye wouldn't stop watering.
So I was moving kind of slow when James got back. I had showered and was mostly dressed. But while I was fixing my hair and starting my makeup I asked when the train was and it was at 855. It was currently 815. If we didn't make that one we wouldn't get into DC until the afternoon. And I didn't want that.
So I focused and did my eyeliner quickly and packed my bag all up. And we were off.
It is about a 20 minute walk to Penn station. And we made it with great time even if my feet hurt.
James went and got us our tickets. It was a beautiful day. And I was excited to take advantage of it. But I was also worried about my energy level. And my pains. I didn't want to be a drag.
But James was lovely. And would make sure I was okay. We did do a lot of walking but there were times I could rest and that let me really hold it together.
We got on our train and we shared my earbuds and listened to the Magnus archives. Which is going to be our new travel podcast. And it was a nice train ride.
We had brought our donuts. And shared my soda. And just enjoyed the fall colors of the changing leaves. I felt very happy.
We got into DC and the first thing we had to do was call the hotel. Can we bring our bags early? Since check in wasn't until 4pm, we didn't want to have to carry them all day or check them at the musuems. But thankfully they were like. Of course you can.
And so we got metro passes and took the subway to get there. And it's a really cool old building. The Ethelhurst building. And the girl at the desk was very nice.
We left our bags with her and sat in the lobby to figure out brunch.
We decided to go to the corner bakery. Which is a chain, and I don't love going to chains on trips, but that is okay. We ended up getting there and basically being the last people to get breakfast before they switched to lunch.
I also got a lemonade and I really liked my veggie scrambled eggs and toast. I did a lot of people watching while James did their basketball fantasy draft. And we made a plan for the day.
We decided to go to the museum of the American Indian. And I ended up loving it way more then I expected. I always love learning about history and this was such a neat place.
We walked there after lunch and shared the lemonade. We ended up walking through a Turkish street fair and I really loved seeing all the stalls and people and food.
Any time we saw a white building we would go "wow. The white house." In an awestruck tone. It was a beautiful day and we are just really happy so it felt easy being silly.
We got to the museum and it was excellent. A beautiful building. Not crowded but there were people. We started on the 4th floor and would work out way down.
The top floor had some amazing stuff with different nations and people and how they place themselves in the universe for each of their own cultures. It was fascinating. I also just loved hearing how their names are pronounced and what different things mean. Also the whole space was just beautifully done.
As we left that floor and went down to the next things were a little heavier. More history and how greed caused the treaties that were made, to fall apart. And how manifest destiny pushed people from lands they owned. It was interesting to learn that there was some actual purchasing of land and agreement to share but that a lot of sales were also done falsely and cruelty. I was already tired and sad and the galleries were dark. But we kept reading. I really appreciated how the musuem labeled wrote out the perspective for each side of each topic. I thought that was a really great way to give things context.
I told James I was really tired. And stoped reading as much. I did read all the signs about the Pocahontas mythos. Did not know she died at 22. Did know she was renamed Rebecca. Didn't realize how much she as a political figured mattered. And how much people clung to her in their lineage even when they shook off the political implications of being nonwhite and passed laws about blood quantum. It was really a great day for learning.
We would go to the giftshop last. I decided I can get one thing from every musuem, within reason. Mostly because the museums are free and I think if you got to go to a museum for free you should support them like that.
So I got a magnet of an alpaca and I would also get a few Christmas gifts. All very reasonably priced.
I thought we were going to go rest. But instead I wanted to stick it out and go to art museum. I wanted to see the recently reinstalled Calder. It's the largest mobile I've ever seen. And I was so excited.
What I didn't know though was that they had a whole Calder exhibit and I was so happy. We would walk around there for a while. And I desperately wanted someone to point out my Calder tattoo but alas, no one did.
That is okay though. Me and James would walk around the contemporary gallery and look at the gift shop. James got to see one of their most favorite paintings, which was a surprise. And I really had a nice time. My body was hurting very bad but I was having a nice day.
We thought we would get lunch there but their cafe was closing for the day. I had read the sign wrong. That is okay. Instead we went through their light up tunnel sculpture and decided we would come back so I can see the John Singer Sargent show and James can walk though the sculpture gallery.
For now it was time to eat.
We walked for what felt like forever, and went to a hip little pizza and waffle place. We sat outside and I really enjoyed my food. And our waiter was very nice.
While we ate I made my next TikTok. For our wedding day. It isn't like the best one ever but I am excited to have these little snapshots of the day. And when that was finished we had a 20 minute walk back to the hotel.
Did I complain the whole time? No. But I did complain a lot. My feet were in so much pain and I felt very bad.
We got back here and got checked in. We are on the 7th floor of a 9 story building. And it's interesting looking. The room is small and a funny shape. There was a very strong laundry soap smell when we got in but it's faded since we came in. The bathroom fan is super loud. So I brought the desk lamp into the bathroom which made James double over laughing.
We laid in bed. I made my next tiktok of our cookout celebration. And I had much more clips for that. I do feel bad that Jess isn't in like. Any of my clips. This is because many of them she filmed. I love her so much for doing that for me but I wish she was in more. I wish I got more pictures with my brother and my mom. But I can only hope that the Google drive James made for people to put their pictures in gets filled and some of those shots will be in there.
I got very cold all of a sudden and me and James got under the covers and I feel asleep hard.
While I was sleeping James took a scooter and went to get us ice cream. So when I woke up dehydrated, in pain, and upset, I was perked up by the ice cream. Love James so much.
After ice cream I took a bath. I washed my hair. I tried the bar conditioner Jess gave me and my hair feels very fluffy. Not great curl shapes but that's okay. The hot water helped my body.
And now we are in bed again. Watching videos. Talking. Feeling good. My feet still hurt but it's not to bad. I hope tomorrow they won't feel so bad.
I also hope tomorrow is just a lot of fun. We are going to the zoo and I don't know what else. There was a chat earlier about maybe going to a hockey game but we will see what happens.
For now. It is time to sleep. I actually took my normal night vitamins and can feel my brain slowing down. This is good, I don't need to be up all night again.
Sleep good everyone. I love you all.
