Why Every Buyer Needs a Home Inspection Before Purchasing a Chicago Home

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments you'll ever make, and in a competitive market like Chicago, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement. However, before you sign on the dotted line, scheduling a home inspection is crucial. Whether you're buying a historic bungalow in Lincoln Park or a modern condo in the Loop, a professional home inspection can save you from unexpected and costly surprises.
Protect Your Investment
A home inspection provides a detailed assessment of a property's condition. Experienced home inspectors in Chicago know exactly what to look for — from hidden water damage and structural issues to outdated electrical systems and roofing problems. Without a thorough inspection, you risk purchasing a home that could require expensive repairs soon after moving in.
Uncover Hidden Problems
Not all defects are visible during a typical walkthrough. Chicago’s diverse housing stock, with its mix of old and new constructions, can hide serious problems. Skilled home inspectors Chicago often find issues like foundation cracks, mold, pest infestations, and plumbing leaks — problems that could significantly affect your quality of life and property value.
Strengthen Your Negotiating Power
A comprehensive home inspection report gives you leverage during price negotiations. If major issues are found, you can request repairs, negotiate a lower purchase price, or even walk away from the deal if necessary. Without this critical information, buyers may find themselves locked into costly repairs that could have been avoided.
Peace of Mind
Simply put, a home inspection offers peace of mind. Knowing the true condition of your potential home allows you to move forward with confidence. Trustworthy home inspectors in Chicago provide honest, unbiased assessments, helping you make informed decisions about one of the biggest purchases of your life.

Is a Rebound Likely for Samsung in the Third Quarter?
Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) just announced its third-quarter guidance. The company expects an operating profit of about 7.7 trillion Korean won, or $6.43 billion. It forecasts consolidated sales of around 62 trillion won, or $51.8 billion. Its operating profit estimate implies an annual decline of more than 50%. Meanwhile, analysts forecast an operating profit of 6.9 trillion won and consolidated sales of 61.14 trillion won for the company.
In last year’s third quarter, Samsung achieved record profit amid strong demand for its memory chips and other components. Thanks to the company’s robust smartphone demand, Samsung’s guidance has surpassed analysts’ expectations. Strong demand for its Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Fold, and Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 11 Pro helped offset chip price declines.
Samsung is set to offer more details on its operating profit when it releases its third-quarter results later this month. In the second quarter, the company’s mobile business posted an operating profit of 1.56 trillion won. This quarter, South Korean analysts predict its operating profit will reach 2 trillion won amid growing demand for the Galaxy Note 10. Samsung aims to reduce its low- to midrange smartphone costs. The company has also shut production in China and manufactures its devices through original design manufacturers.
According to Bloomberg, TrendForce analysts think the stock-up demand was higher than expected in the third quarter because shipments accelerated ahead of the December tariff increases. As a result, contract prices also stabilized in the third quarter.
Analysts expect the chip industry to rebound
A weak forecast by Micron (MU) led analysts to believe the global memory-chip cycle had bottomed and a rebound was likely. In fiscal 2020’s first quarter, Micron projects revenue of $4.8 billion–$5.2 billion and EPS of $0.39–$0.53. Meanwhile, analysts expect the company to post $4.8 billion in revenue and EPS of $0.53.
When DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and NAND (negative AND) fell, disappointment in the semiconductor industry grew. The memory business contributes 80% of Samsung’s operating profit. However, prices have stabilized, spurring optimism. Bloomberg reports that spot prices for 4GB (gigabyte) DRAM chips fell 0.8% in the third quarter, compared with 24% in the previous quarter. Citing inSpectrum Tech data, Bloomberg adds that contract prices for 32GB DRAM server modules fell 13.8% sequentially in the third quarter.
Samsung stock’s performance and outlook
Samsung stock has soared 24% this year amid hopes of the semiconductor industry recovering. The stock has survived three straight quarters of declining annual profits. In the first and second quarters, Samsung’s earnings fell more than 50%.
The market welcomed Samsung’s third-quarter operating profit and consolidated sales guidance. Global investors were waiting for the company’s guidance for insights into the chip industry and how Japan’s raw material export restrictions have affected it.
Midas International Asset Management CEO Heo Pil-Seok thinks SSNLF stock could face a short-term correction after the earnings announcement. He believes expectations of the company’s earnings rebounding have been factored into the stock’s price.
Removal of some Japan export curbs is a relief
Samsung has also suffered due to ongoing Japan–South Korea trade tensions. Exports of certain critical raw materials from Japan were curbed in July. However, in August, Japan approved exports of EUV (extreme ultraviolet) photoresists to South Korea. Samsung uses these photoresists to create powerful chips that consume less energy. As Japan commands 90% of the global EUV photoresist market, Samsung depends on the exports. The export curb’s removal was a relief for the company.
Exports of another chip-refining chemical, liquid hydrogen fluoride, haven’t been approved yet. However, Bloomberg reports Samsung may turn to a local supplier for substitutes.
Challenges ahead for Samsung
DRAM prices’ stabilization is a silver lining for Samsung. TrendForce forecasts that DRAM prices will drop by a low-single-digit percentage in the first quarter of 2020, compared with 20%–25% in this year’s first quarter. However, US-China trade tensions and the global slowdown remain matters of concern.
Whereas smartphone and DRAM chip demand has picked up, it remains to be seen whether it can maintain that momentum. Bloomberg reports CLSA tech analyst Sanjeev Rana said, “Although DRAM and NAND demand is recovering and shipments in the third quarter were quite robust, there is skepticism about the sustainability of the demand upturn.”
With its operating profit possibly falling more than 50%, Samsung may have a challenging year ahead. Uncertainties regarding its memory business could persist, and it may be some time before Samsung sees an uptick in its profits.

An Investigation in Spacetime – Inspector Spacetime
An Investigation In Spacetime focuses on the early days of Inspector Spacetime, starring Simon Jones as Leslie French in the role of the First Inspector, Rosamund Pike as Honor Blackman in the role of Susannah Overseer, and Charlie Brooker as the Blorgons' creator, Tony Hancock.
Summary
Avoiding the conventions of typical docudramas, this special mixes dramatic re-enactments of the programme's sometimes contentious history with new interviews with its producers, script editors, and showrunners, including Anthony Bonham Pease, Terry Pratchett, David P. Russell, and Stefan Toffat, in an effort to get the story straight.
Travelling back in time to 1962, it looks into the conflicting accounts of how Inspector Spacetime was brought to the small screen. Leslie French was a serious Shakespearean actor, best known for playing Ariel in only a loincloth, but now willing to essay television in order to achieve a wider audience. Tony Hancock was a famous humorist who had split up with his old scriptwriters, his agent, and the BBC and who was currently looking for a new venue to try something different. Anthony Bonham Pease was just an unknown producer for the struggling British TeleVision channel. Each of them had a different version of how they took a Saturday tea-time time-travelling detective show and turned it into what would become the longest-running science fiction series ever.
Reception
Although An Investigation In Spacetime concludes that it is impossible to put together an objective record of what really went into the production of Inspector Spacetime, its behind-the-scenes recreations of familiar events from multiple viewpoints are a treat for all Inspectrum fans, thanks to the comic performances of Jones, Pike, and Brooker. While the irascible (and absentminded) Bonham Pease would disavow it as soon as it aired, critics would compare it to a cross between Rashomon and Noises Off. Steve Coogan was universally praised in his supporting role as Hancock's replacement scriptwriter Terry Nation, who was either an idea-stealing toady who deserved getting the sack (in Hancock's version) or a burgeoning creative talent stifled by his difficult and egotistical employer iuntil he was forced to quit (in Bonham Pease's).

Samsung Feels Apple’s Pain as Tech Slowdown Bites
Samsung Electronics Co.’s quarterly profit and sales missed estimates on sputtering demand for memory chips during the last three months of 2018, the same quarter that Apple Inc. reported anemic sales in China.
The South Korean company’s operating income fell to 10.8 trillion won ($9.6 billion) in the period that ended in December, according to preliminary results released Tuesday, falling short of the 13.8 trillion-won average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Deteriorating relations between the U.S. and China — Samsung’s two biggest export destinations — has hit demand for memory used in everything from personal computers to mobile devices, raising the pressure on a company struggling to revitalize its smartphone business. Compounding that challenge is weakness at Apple, a major customer of components; the iPhone maker stunned global markets last week when it cut its sales outlook for the first time in almost two decades.
“It’s a shock,” Song Myung-sup, an analyst at Hi Investment & Securities Co., said of Samsung’s results. “It’s not just Apple, but also smartphone, server and PC manufacturers that are not buying. While the U.S.-China trade war hangs over them, these customers just won’t accept current prices, and Samsung faces pressure to cut chip prices.”
Sales for the fourth quarter fell to 59 trillion won, compared with the 63.6 trillion won average projection compiled by Bloomberg. Samsung didn’t provide net income, which it will do later this month when it releases final results.
Samsung’s shares fell as much as 2.1 percent before paring losses at midday in Seoul. The stock dropped 24 percent last year.
Memory chips account for the biggest portion of Samsung’s profit. Contract prices for 32-gigabyte DRAM server modules fell about 5 percent in the December quarter, according to InSpectrum Tech Inc. Prices for 128 gigabit MLC NAND flash memory chips fell about 3.4 percent.
Apple’s surprise cut to its sales forecast last week suggested a worsening outlook for orders for Samsung. Apple receives memory chips and smartphone screens from Samsung and is the South Korean manufacturer’s biggest customer, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Samsung said it expects earnings to remain subdued in the first three months of the year due to difficult conditions for memory. Profitability will recover in the second half, the company predicted, on projected improvements in the market, with rising adoption of new CPUs and launches of new smartphone products.
While Samsung still leads the world in smartphone sales, it’s being squeezed by Chinese handset makers like Huawei Technologies Co. The South Korean company is pinning its hopes on a foldable-screen phone that it plans to ship this year, along with a flagship Galaxy S10 model that is said to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and a near-zero bezel.
While sales of its own devices have foundered, the company supplies organic light-emitting diode screens for Apple and Huawei. Samsung’s liquid-crystal display televisions are facing increasing challenges from Chinese rivals that seek to crowd out South Korean products.
“Recovering demand in the first quarter cannot be expected, because it is a seasonally low period and customers also know prices are coming off, so there’s no rush to buy,” said Sanjeev Rana, a Korea technology analyst at CLSA.“In the second quarter Samsung launches the Galaxy S10 and a lot of other Android makers announce new model launches that might help smartphone demand and enhance the demand for DRAM.”

iPhone Storage is 'Absolutely the Most Profitable iPhone Feature' says Analyst
A new report out this morning by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Ian King takes a look into Apple's pricing strategy for the storage capacities on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Specifically, Bloomberg says that the biggest upsell for the iPhone XS and XS Max is the new 512GB storage option, which will help Apple make $134 more per iPhone than the 64GB option. 512GB is the highest storage capacity that Apple has yet to release on an iPhone, and the company charges customers a lot more for NAND storage chips than it pays suppliers. IHS Markit analyst Wayne Lam explains that storage costs Apple about 25 cents per gigabyte, and the company charges customers about 78 cents per gigabyte. Because of this, Lam says that storage "is absolutely the most profitable iPhone feature." In research compiled by Bloomberg, the 64GB iPhone XS cost Apple $23.68 for the NAND storage specifically, the 256GB cost $66.24, and the 512GB cost $132.48. In terms of revenue, the 512GB storage option is estimated to make Apple $134 more per iPhone than the 64GB tier, an increase from $107 for the 2017 models. According to data from InSpectrum Tech, the market price of NAND flash memory is half of what it was a year ago, but Apple's storage tiers for the iPhone have not reflected these savings. “Storage is one of their levers to create more revenue and is absolutely the most profitable iPhone feature,” says Wayne Lam, an analyst at researcher IHS Markit Ltd. Adding more isn’t much work for Apple, because it just means swapping a chip, he adds, “whereas when you increase the screen size, you have to completely re-engineer the phone.” The 78¢-per-gig charge hasn’t budged since last year. Of course, Apple uses contracts to lock in the price of such components as Nand flash, so it may not be benefiting yet from recent price declines. So far, though, storage costs customers more on an iPhone than on, say, a Samsung Note 9. Samsung Electronics Co. charges 65¢ a gig to move from the 128GB Note 9 phone to the 512GB model. With more storage, users can save more photos, videos, documents, music, movies, podcasts, books, and more on their iPhones, without having to worry about deleting old items for more space. Of course, Apple also offers iCloud storage at $0.99/month for 50GB, $2.99/month for 200GB, and $9.99/month for 2TB. This means that if a 512GB iPhone XS or XS Max user wants to back up most of the content on their device, they will need to opt for the $9.99/month option. In terms of the prices for these new iPhones, which begin at $750 for the not-yet-released iPhone XR and increase to $1,449 for the 512GB iPhone XS Max, Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the company is aiming to "serve everyone." In an interview with Nikkei, he explained that "if you provide a lot of innovation and a lot of value, there is a segment of people who are willing to pay for it," referring to the steeper prices of this year's iPhone XS and XS Max. Top 5 Things Chicago Home Inspectors Look for During an Inspection

When you're buying a home, hiring a professional for a home inspection in Chicago is one of the smartest moves you can make. Property inspectors like Inspectrum are trained to spot potential issues that might not be obvious during a casual walkthrough. Knowing what Chicago home inspectors look for can help you better understand the true condition of your future property and avoid costly surprises.
Here are the top 5 things professional home inspectors in Chicago look for during an inspection:
1. Structural Integrity
The structure is the backbone of any home. Inspectors carefully examine the foundation, walls, roof framing, and overall construction for any signs of weakness or damage. In Chicago, older properties are especially prone to foundation cracks and settling — issues that could lead to major repairs if not caught early.
2. Roofing Issues
Given Chicago’s harsh winters and unpredictable weather, the roof is a critical focus during any home inspection. Inspectors check for missing shingles, leaks, signs of poor installation, and overall roof aging. A compromised roof can lead to costly water damage, mold growth, and energy inefficiencies.
3. Electrical Systems
Safety comes first. Inspectors thoroughly review the electrical panel, wiring, outlets, and light fixtures. Outdated or improperly installed electrical systems are not only an inconvenience but also a fire hazard. Inspectrum’s experts ensure that your future home meets current safety standards and codes.
4. Plumbing Problems
From inspecting pipes for leaks and corrosion to checking water pressure and drainage, plumbing systems undergo detailed scrutiny. Chicago’s older homes often have aging pipes that could require replacement — something you’ll definitely want to know about before closing the deal.
5. HVAC System Performance
Heating and cooling systems are essential, especially in Chicago’s extreme temperatures. Inspectors evaluate furnaces, air conditioners, vents, and thermostats to ensure they are functioning properly. Replacing an HVAC system can be a major expense, so a thorough evaluation during the home inspection is key.
Trust Inspectrum for Your Home Inspection in Chicago
At Inspectrum, we pride ourselves on providing detailed, honest, and expert home inspection Chicago services. Our team of experienced inspectors goes beyond the basics to ensure you have a complete understanding of your new home's condition.
