The layman’s terms of interior design can be quite challenging to put in articulate words. It is a vast genre, and you can squash so much into a small crash course. However, there are some design principles that everyone should be aware of, especially if you’re thinking about undertaking an interior design venture of your own.
Singapore is a country where home interior designing has become quite a qualitative market. Everyone wants a home that looks the epitome of stylish, but every few people take those first baby steps that will get them in the right direction. It’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into before you even reach out to a consultant. So here are 5 design basics you should study up on before going for full-scale renovation.
Give Function Priority
It may seem like the looks and overall aesthetic are the most important part of your home interior design, but do not underestimate the importance of actual function. Yes, the overall style is important, but that does not mean that you get to overlook the function. So always pay special attention to the layout of your interior design. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a lot of things that look really pretty, but are functionally redundant. A good example of this would be when you overestimate the amount of space you’ll need for the living area, and end up with a tiny, inefficient kitchen space instead.
Educate Yourself In The Basic Principles Of Design
The basic principles of design are basically like the ten commandments of interior design. They include:
Balance: This is when all of your spaces and designs look absolutely equilateral and every asymmetric object is counterbalanced.
Symmetry: This is the easiest one; you just have to create a regular visual pattern in the space in order to invoke symmetry.
Colour: Colour schemes are always the most important part. However, you cannot go forward with a single colour for your entire interior. Similarly, you cannot go forward with too many colours at once either. Try to create contrast and use may two or three colours at once only.
Harmony: Harmony is when your overall interior design looks absolutely holistic. Every element complements the other.
Rhythm: rhythm engages your eye within the space and keeps things interesting. It can be done with a clever arrangement of photo frames, patterned wall paper and even ceiling designs.
Each time something looks off about your space, it means that one of these basic principles have been overlooked. So train you eye to see past the obvious and look underneath. The details will be your guide.
The Style
Considering the style and theme of your home interior design is an absolute must when you’re looking to renovate. You cannot simply collect a number of varying ideas from Instagram or Pinterest and choose what stands out best. There always has to be a logic to the madness. There are a lot of interior design styles you’ll be able to look up on the internet. You’ll have to choose one and then stick to it. You cannot put cottage style wooden beams in the middle of a sleek modern interior just because they looked stunning individually.
The Lighting
Lighting is basically what makes or breaks the ambiance and atmosphere of your home interior design. Many people overlook the importance of a good lighting plan when they take on an interior design venture. However, you should always pay special consideration to good lighting. Otherwise, you can end up with a stunning interior design that gets lost in interpretation because of bad lighting choices.
Personality
Your home interior design should always be a reflection of your personality, otherwise you will never feel comfortable. You should think about how you can add some personal touches to the space when it would be done. You can do it by using accessories, photo frames and even artwork. Visualizing the end product can always help you get ahead in the game, after all.
There are a lot of things that should be considered before you reach out to your consultant, and this was the basic gist of it. We hope it helps you understand the initial process of a successful interior design on the client’s part.

The decluttering mania has become a real, palpable thing with Japanese Organizer, Marie Kondo’s book named The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing! Many consider it a literal ‘clean life’ Bible, where Kondo relates all the ways you can get rid of everything unnecessary in your lives with her simple and heartfelt ways. Lovingly dubbed ‘The KonMari Method’ this technique is all about organizing your life and belongings in a rather neat and thankful way.
Singapore is a country that that thrives on HDB homes, many of which are space starved. As a result, the interior design industry has become quite a booming business. So the question is, can the KonMari method help residents get a clean, satisfying and blissful way to declutter and make their homes more breathable? The answer may depend on your perspective, but the general consensus is; yes. So let’s take a look at some ways Marie Kondo has made decluttering easier for everyone.
Visualizing Your Destination
When it comes to interior design and decluttering, Kondo’s got one advice for everyone who’s thinking of starting anew; visualize your destination. It’s actually a brilliant take on starting over. When your home is small and cluttered, you have to set apart the apprehension and set some clear-cut goals for yourself. When you visualize the final outcome, you’ll feel motivated. And this motivation will help you reevaluate the mess in your home interior design.
Respecting Your Belongings
The KonMari Method encourages the user to respect their belongings. You cannot sift through your stuff with only half your mind on the project and carry out a successful full-scale decluttering. That seems simply redundant and half-hearted. Instead, Kondo advises you to look at your belongings with respect. Ask yourself if that half-empty make-up kit is still happy being locked up in your top drawer? Or if the clothes tacked at the back of your closet happy being squashed? Maybe considering the ‘feelings’ of these inanimate objects seem a little out there for you, but it actually works. Once you start looking at the miserable state of your organization, it becomes easy to sift through your stuff.
Sentimental Value Only Gets In The Way
If you’re looking to set your home interior design back on track, then Kondo suggests sweeping away the haze of nostalgia. Once you start going through your old belongings, it’s inevitable that you’ll be hit by a wave of nostalgia. You’ll want to tuck everything back to where you just pulled it out from, and that’ll just b going back to square one. In a country like Singapore where space is already short, this can be chalked up to a personal disaster. This is why Kondo suggests that you don’t let yourself indulge in sentimental value and get things done.
Categorize, Not Standardize
Every interior design looks its best when it has been decluttered to its basic essentials. Kondo suggests that you start your decluttering by categories, and not by rooms. She’s absolutely right in that regards. When you deal with decluttering Room A instead of Category A, things will just end up shuffling from one space to another without you ever being any wiser. So it’s better to start cleaning up with categories instead of rooms.
The Vertical Fold
The crown jewel and the ultimate decluttering technique that Kondo has mentioned in her book is the Vertical Fold. It might not look like much, but the vertical fold will help maintain your decluttering long after you’re done with the initial project. It consists of stacking your folds in neat, vertical stacks inside of drawers. This way, even when you take something out, it won’t disturb the rest of the setting.
Conclusion
As you can see, Marie Kondo is an expert who knows what she’s talking about. She understands that decluttering is like parting with old friends, and introduces some great ways to start your interior design cleansing. It’s no wonder that her book has become quite a phenomenon in the recent years.

Looking for the hottest trends in residential interior design? You’re at the right place! Home interior design in Singapore is a massive and very successful industry. Contemporary interior design fashions are a very popular genre, mostly because the dearth of real estate make people want to embellish and decorate their interiors to the absolute fullest. But everyone knows that trends are fleeting; every year there’s a new crop to choose from! So below, we’ll be looking at the 5 biggest trends in home interior design Singapore for 2017 according to industry insiders!
Throwback to the Vintage Styles
You heard it right; vintage and retro styles are making a comeback this season! Residential interior design is a hotbed for experimental ideas, especially in Singapore, and there is nothing more exploratory than blending the old styles with a contemporary aesthetic! As a result, many vintage styles are making a big splash in modern settings. We have boho-chic furniture, psychedelic colours, retro artwork and even chintz patterns being used with a touch of contemporary to fit the modern sensibilities successfully!
The Scandinavian Style
The perfect blend of minimal and breezy, the Scandinavian style of interior design is a particular favourite when it comes to residential interior design. The reason for this is mostly because this style has the ability to make spaces seem capacious with a dash of elegance and sophistication. Its light, wooden floors, an all-white or almost-monochromatic colour scheme along with an emphasis on natural light and simplicity has rendered the Scandinavian style of interior design an industry favourite.
Storage by Design
One of the biggest trend to follow this season is designing your storage in style. The term ‘storage’ here is being referred to shelving units, cabinets and in-house cupboards. Home interior design in Singapore must always cater to the practical needs of the residents more than anything else. But that doesn’t mean that you get to overlook the aesthetics for function. So designers have been coming up with clever shelving and cabinet designs to designs more interesting in subtle but beautiful ways.
Interesting Lighting Fixtures
Some say that light is the fourth dimension, which is not quite wrong. Lighting has the ability to make any interior design infinitely more beautiful and dramatic, and clever lighting fixtures are the perfect medium to do so. You’ll find many homes all over Singapore that feature some great lighting fixtures. From pendent lights, contemporary drop chandeliers to even innovative recessed lighting, this residential interior design trend is one of the greatest this season.
Compact and Minimal Bedroom Layouts
Since the real-estate in Singapore is extremely limited, and most HDB allotted homes have a very stringent square footage, it is important to make the most of the given space. The trend of compact, minimalistic bedroom layouts may have started off as a necessity, but it has now become a booming trend in the residential interior design genre. This mostly consists of a platform bed with an attached study desk and half the bedroom spared for circulation space. The compact layout trend has caught on quite well, and remain a classic for even longer.
Home Guide is one of the oldest and therefore, the most experienced trendsetters in the industry. The firm has designed many residential interior designs over the course of its conception, and knows how to keep up with the latest trends. Consulting with Home Guide Designs would ensure you get the best interior designs in Singapore!

Buying a house is an exciting experience and nowadays many are choosing to go with a smaller option. Apartments, studios and even Tiny Homes have become the fashionable choice. But, just because you’re buying small, doesn’t mean it has to feel small. These designer’s tricks will help you create a spacious interior design for your home.
This neutral bedroom feels calm and light
Colour – The first little trick that makes a BIG difference is: light colours reflect light and open up a space, dark colours absorb light and close it up, simple. Your wall colour is one of the easiest and most effective areas in which to apply this. Keep walls, ceiling and detailing, subtle shades of the same colour to create a calm, neutral backdrop for your furnishings.
Sheer curtains allow light to filter in all day.
Windows – Windows add natural light and create flow, so allow them to shine using light or sheer curtains. Finally, a simple yet magic trick is to use full length curtains even with small windows, to create the illusion of height.
The addition of a large mirror nearly doubles this space.
Mirrors – Can’t afford to add a window? Then add a mirror! Create an illusion of extra space with a mirror by placing a large one opposite a window to reflect fresh natural light.
Beautiful quality flooring doesn’t need a rug at all.
Flooring – Keep flooring simple and clean, larger tiles and broader, longer floorboards create a sense of space. Rugs should be large and plain, though if your flooring is beautiful, why not get rid of the rug entirely?
This bed doubles up as storage, and even the bedside table can fold away.
Furniture – Fewer key pieces of furniture are best, in light/neutral colours. Choose furniture raised on thin legs instead of blocky and heavy pieces. Also, multi-purpose furniture is a great way to save space: a sleeper-couch, an extendable dining table and an ottoman that doubles as storage are great ways to make every centimetre count.
These pendants add a pool of light over the dining table, creating interest in this simple space.
Lighting – Dark spaces always look smaller. Create a combination with task, general and ambient lighting to allow for all needs and to create a sense of warmth.
Finally, remember to have fun! A happy home is a beautiful home, so look for the perfect balance to suit your taste and budget.
