Sunday brunch is a religion in New York City.

Those on the higher end of the tax bracket regularly have their eggs benedict on some secluded luxury rooftop while the rest of us save our nickels and dimes for weeks just to have a short stack somewhere in the lower east side. I happen to be one of those people that finds events like this that step totally outside of the “brunch box.”

This past Saturday was the series premiere of BrunchNBeats, a weekly summer gathering that took place in the ‘Private Park’ of the Hudson Hotel. Hosted by the Intermixx Group, it featured food, drinks and a live DJ from 4-9pm.

We signed up for the guest list a week before the event (though we somehow lost Amber to Liberty Island) and got in the door without any problems. It was pretty packed! People were mingling along the long tables and swarming the bar. Also inside was a sort of take-out window where people could order food. I have to say that I was pretty disappointed there was no free/cheap food AND the things they were serving weren’t even remotely brunch related! I did however manage to snag a cupcake from Andrew who was apparently having his graduation party at the same venue. (Congrats again Andrew! Thanks for the chocolate!) The best thing about the event was the live DJ spinning on the outdoor patio. He definitely made the crowd forget that it was nowhere near club hours. Overall, I’d give this event a 3.5 out of 5. Good DJ but no actual “brunch.” And also, you can’t help but feel a little weird dancing to club music with the sun still up.
