A Strategic Approach to Sustainable Tourism
The Government's Commitment to Regional Tourism In an effort to ensure that New Zealand's regions are well-prepared to welcome tourists and effectively manage the impacts of increased visitation, Tourism Minister Peeni Henare announced the establishment of a national destination management team. With a budget of $5 million sourced from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, the team will work closely with regions across the country to develop and implement destination management plans tailored to each region's unique attractions.   Balancing Visitor Experience and Environmental Protection Henare emphasized the importance of providing visitors with exceptional experiences while also safeguarding New Zealand's natural environment and minimizing their impact. Through destination planning, regions aim to create well-managed and sustainable visitor destinations that can adapt and evolve based on social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors.   Government Support for Regional Tourism Under the Government's COVID-19 relief package for Regional Tourism Organisations, $11.5 million has already been allocated to support the development of destination management plans across Aotearoa. The additional funding from the international visitor levy will enable the newly formed national team to coordinate and advance destination management activities on a national scale. By collaborating with tourism organizations, businesses, government entities, and local communities, the team will work towards enhancing the overall visitor experience and aligning regional efforts with national tourism priorities, such as the Industry Transformation Plans.   A Path Towards Sustainability and Resilience Peeni Henare emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the tourism sector in its journey towards sustainability and resilience. By investing in the national destination management team, New Zealand aims to ensure that its world-class regional destinations can be shared with the world while preserving their unique attributes for future generations.
