State Library
Locates at 328 Swanston street, State Library opened to public at 1856 and people could get access to all books free except for medicine books for which they needed permission. Known as Melbourne Public Library originally, this library has gone through lots of design and construction developments. This building is neo-classical icon, which was designed by Josep Reeds initially.
The old building was part of current building which is in Swanston and consisted of Queen’s Reading room today known as Ian Potter Queen’s Hall and the Palmer hall which is now readings bookstore but used to host contemporary sculptures initially. (Image1)

The facade is made from Tasmanian freestone and Hobart bluestone and is completed by portico with eight fluted ionic columns that were designed after venola’s style and were finished at 1870.
South Wing then was added to building at 1864 as part of development of the Queen’s Hall. Then in 1912, the doomed octagonal shape, called Library Reading Room was added to the building. Doom development was a great transaction from19th century design to 20th century design for State Library. In 1913, a grand white marble staircase replaced the old wooden stairs in Queen's Hall to link foyer to the Domed Reading Room. (Image 2)

Queen’s Hall reading room is 240 foot long, 30 feet high and 50 feet wide. The hall is arcade shape with barrel-vaulted ceiling and is surrounded by ionic fluted columns along both sides of the hall to support Gallery around. The columns then join to main walls by cross walls creating 26 open bays to accommodate book readers. (Image 3)

Ceiling skylights were the source of light in Queen’s Hall but there were also artificial light of suspended gasolier. Upon the completion Queens’ Hall extension, Barrett Johnston took a picture of the this magnificent Hall. (Image 4)

N G Peeples designed domed Library Reading Room or La Trobe Reading Room at 1908 and its construction was finished at 1912. The cone head with 38.75 meter in diameter used to be the largest reinfected concrete dome in the world for a while. (Image5)

La Trobe Reading Room is looking at the façade and replaced Rotunda and Great Hall of the Exhibition Buildings. The drum is from cement stucco in yellow gold render with skylights in the doom which were cover with copper at 1959. (Image6)

Bio-embracing technologies: Micro/Nano-scale devices to mimic or measure bio-systems: Professors Madhu Bhaskaran and Sharath Sriram

We held our first event in the series Spotlight on Couples in Biomedical Research last May. The second event in this series will feature Madhu Bhaskaran and Sharath Sriram from the School of Engineering at RMIT University. They will share their work in using nanotechnology to develop a range of devices that address real-world applications in partnership with industry. They will also discuss the challenges of managing a pressured academic life and its impact on the work-life balance.
The Functional Materials and Microsystems Research Group harnesses discoveries at the convergence of engineering, materials science, physics, and chemistry to create new functional devices. We will delve into a world of nanotechnology that allows electronic materials to mimic and monitor biological systems.
Drawing inspiration from the human brain, and the synaptic cleft, we create nanoscale electronic memories. Ionic transport in the synaptic cleft is mimicked in ultra-thin oxides, enabling multi-state memories and time-dependent functionality. While creating complex memories for commercial applications, we also show bio-inspired performance with electronics with 10% of biological data.
Hard wearables such as smart watches are now ubiquitous, but conformal electronics that function as skin-like sensing surfaces are limited by materials challenges. Overcoming the challenges of integrating high-temperature-processed oxide thin films and polymer materials creates new opportunities in highly functional wearable sensors. We realise thin electronic patches that adhere to the skin that can measure and diagnose, monitoring environment around, on, and within us – while communicating wirelessly.
Industry and end-user benefit underpin all our activities and industry-partnered case studies for aged-care monitoring and early intervention for cardiovascular diseases are presented.
Our Presenters
Professors Madhu Bhaskaran and Sharath Sriram jointly lead the Functional Materials and Microsystems Research Group at RMIT University. The Group undertakes multidisciplinary research at the convergence of engineering, physics, chemistry, and biomedicine. The discoveries made at micro/nano-scales are transformed into prototypes often in partnership with industry.

Professor Madhu Bhaskaran is an Australian Research Council Fellow and Associate Dean for Higher Degrees by Research in the School of Engineering at RMIT University. Her work seeks to transform conventional hard electronics into soft and unbreakable products, thin enough to create electronic skin. She has been named as one of Top 10 Innovators under 35 for Asia (MIT Technology Review 2016). She has also been recognised with a 2017 Eureka Prize for Outstanding Early Career Researcher, 2018 Batterham Medal, and 2018 APEC Aspire Prize.
Professor Sharath Sriram is the Founding Deputy Director and Scientific Coordinator of RMIT University's $30 million Micro Nano Research Facility. His focus is on unlocking new properties in ultra-thin electronic materials to mimic brain function, sense biometric parameters, and create high-speed communication technologies. Team investigates alternative battery material
Researchers from the Deakin University Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) are hoping to develop a new type of battery material that will reduce the cost and environmental impact of high-performance batteries.
Working in partnership with Calix, at its Bacchus Marsh manufacturing facility, and Melbourne-based Boron Molecular, the team is studying applications of a readily available compound compared with current standard ingredients that are more costly and harder to source.
The three-year project has received $3 million in funding from the federal government’s Cooperative Research Centre Projects program, which supports short-term, industry-led collaborations in new technologies, products and services.
IFM Deputy Director Professor Maria Forsyth, who leads the IFM team that includes Prof. Patrick Howlett and Dr Robert Kerr, said energy storage was a growing area of research, but the challenge was to develop manufacturing capability in Australia.
“There is a global search for safe, low-cost, high-capacity, high-performing batteries given the demand for high-performance energy storage and electric vehicles,” Prof. Forsyth said.
“The challenge for Australia is to develop a sustainable battery manufacturing industry that has global reach through process innovation.”
Prof. Forsyth said Deakin was ideally placed to lead the research, with IFM hosting the Battery Technology Research and Innovation Hub (BatTRI-Hub) — a world-class research and innovation centre focused on advanced battery prototyping and the commercialisation of energy storage technologies.
The team will explore the use of CalixFlash Calcination (CFC) technology to produce customised micron-sized nano-electroactive materials for intercalation-based anodes and cathodes. This could then be integrated with optimised ionic electrolytes to make up to 10 kWh battery pack prototypes.
Prof. Howlett said this would be the first time this type of battery research has been undertaken in Australia.
“We will be using high-rate processing technology with Australian materials,” Prof. Howlett said. “These materials will also have capacity to go into high-performance supercapacitors, which store charge like a battery and can dispense that charge very quickly.”
The project will involve a field trial of the battery packs, including solar applications linked to small solar PV systems and the Deakin Microgrid, currently under development at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus, as well as creation of a data-analytics database that will play a vital role in the design process.
Importantly, the project will develop a roadmap for commercialisation pathways and a blueprint for an Australian manufacturing hub of nano-active materials, electrolytes and packing technologies.
