The late-90s J. Crew catalogues I own (originally bought for Rachel Animorphs blorbo purposes, more recently discussed in the context of Yellowjackets with @eucatastrophicblues and @lesbianjackies) are honestly fascinating windows into the social history of twenty-five to thirty years ago. Prices for this kind of clothing (shockingly reasonable compared to something like Lily P.); attitudes towards sexuality and the female body (phrases like "bare and sexy" in ad copy aimed at girls in their mid-teens; thong options offered for most women's underwear sets but not depicted visually within the catalogue); gender roles (good old nineties prep androgyny; lots of pieces where you genuinely cannot tell whether they're men's or women's without reading the description; great for masc Jackie Taylor's plausible deniability); race (nonwhite models present but few and far between; no indication that either of these facts was supposed to be understood as politically suggestive in any way); family structures (mostly heterosexual and nuclear, but not in a self-consciously idealized way); production processes (lots of it is still completely natural fibers even for stuff like socks and windbreakers). Really really interesting stuff.
