It's interesting seeing these Rothko paintings as digital images because with the backlighting of the screen the color is much more vibrant than when you see them on a wall in person. They're both valid ways of seeing them and just provide a different perspective on color inspiration. Rothko himself would say his paintings were not explorations of color but of light. He died in 1970 so obviously he wasn't talking about backlighting; who knows what he would have thought about seeing his paintings on an iPhone.
