4/6/13: Late Swats Lead Blue Jays to Win
BOS: 013 200 002 // 8-11-0 (LoB: 7) TOR: 001 200 42x // 9-12-1 (LoB: 3)
WP: Lincoln (1-0); LP: Aceves (0-1); S: Janssen (1) HR: Ross (off Happ; 0 on); Arencibia (off Lackey, 1 on); Bautista (off Aceves; 1 on); Rasmus (off Aceves; 1 on); Middlebrooks (off Janssen; 1 on)
The Blue Jays scored 4 runs in the 7th inning and 2 more in the 8th, powered by a pinch-hit, 2-out 2-run home run by José Bautista in the 7th and a 2-out, 2-run shot by Colby Rasmus in the 8th, to cap off a comeback from a 6-1 deficit, and hand the Red Sox their first loss of the young season. It didn't look good for the Jays early, as after a relatively quiet 1st inning - with just a 2-out double followed by a walk, but no runs scored - the Sox got a David Ross solo homer in the 2nd, two run-scoring doubles in the 3rd, and a 2 more runs in the 3rd to go up 6-1 on J.A. Happ. John Lackey, meanwhile, limited the Jays to 6 hits thru 6 innings - including 2 doubles, a triple, and a 2-run home run - but held them to just the 2 runs on J.P. Arencibia's shot in the 4th inning. Things fell apart late in the 7th for the Red Sox. Lackey started with 2 straight outs, but then back-to-back-to-back singles, sandwiched by a double steal, drove in a run and made it 6-4. Alfredo Aceves came on in relief, and his first pitch resulted in a passed ball that made it 6-5. Two pitches later, Bautista - in as a pinch hitter, took Aceves deep to give the Jays the lead. The BoSox, in their half of the 8th, put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but couldn't come through with the big hit they needed; in the bottom of the 8th, Aceves got 2 outs before allowing another 2 run shot to put the Jays up by 3. That ended up being the key hit, as Jays closer Casey Janssen allowed a 2-out 2-run shot in the 9th, closing the gap to 1, but shut the door on the Red Sox.
For the Sox, Dustin Pedroia had 3 doubles in his 1st 3 at bats, all against J.A. Happ, but couldn't manage hits against the Jays bullpen; the Sox managed 5 doubles in total for the game. Mike Napoli walked his first time up, but then struck out each of the next 4 times to pick up the golden sombrero. J.A. Happ hit 2 batters, both of whom came around to score. For the Jays, the 3 home runs were a welcome sign of an offense that had only managed 1 in the first 4 games this season; they also knocked 3 doubles and a triple. Rasmus and Adam Lind both had multiple extra base hits. Rajai Davis stole 2 bases off of the John Lackey/David Ross duo.
(Strat notes: John Lackey, the real-life version, got injured in this game and missed a couple of starts; obviously that didn't happen here, so I'll have him out in 5 games or whatever. Bautista didn't start this game [or the next couple of games] due to a minor injury, but I think I'll probably have him back in the line up in the next game, because he's not injured here and because Melky Cabrera needs a day off after starting something like 1-20. The Jays came in with just 1 home run, but had 3 2-run shots in this game. Also, with Brandon Morrow injured - he's supposed to start in a couple of days - the team has "called up" Ramón Ortiz, who in actually made a start on April 17. Not sure if I'll need him then, but definitely need him in place of Morrow for this upcoming start.)
Toronto 2-3; Boston: 4-1 Next game in replay: STL (Miller, 0-0) @ SF (Vogelsong, 0-0)

It’s been more than four years since Ricky Romero walked off the mound at the Major League level. Yesterday, he finally made it official; the former Blue Jays lefty called it a career.
Romero announced on Instagram that he’s officially retired from the game of baseball. It was an overdue announcement, but now the 34-year-old has closure on his 10-year pro ball career. Back in August, Romero told Sportsnet 590’s Jeff Blair that he hadn’t yet closed the door on his career. Now, that chapter is over.
Romero steps away from the game with a career 51-45 record, 4.16 ERA and 622 strikeouts through five MLB seasons. His career highlights include an All-Star Game selection in 2011 and a Top 10 Cy Young finish in 2011. Among Blue Jays franchise records, Romero ranks 13th all-time in games started and 13th in strikeouts.

Dear baseball, thank you for the memories. Memories that I will cherish forever. To my teammates and coaches – many of which I’ll call friends for life – it was an honor. Toronto, and actually the whole country of Canada – I love you. Canada, thank you for showing so much love to this young kid from East Los Angeles. I did it, I lived it, and and now it’s time to officially announce that I’M DONE. I tip my hat to the fans and to this beautiful game I was blessed to play. To my family, thank you so much for the support throughout my career… I love you guys!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 🎉🎉🎉 #Official
A post shared by Ricky Romero (@rickyro24) on Dec 31, 2018 at 4:02pm PST
Although his tenure in Toronto was a short one, his rookie campaign quickly elevated Romero into a fan favourite. Judging by the comments left by his former teammates and opponents, Romero was revered by them as well.
These words of encouragement range from former teammates like Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Scott Richmond, Marc Rzepczynksi and J.P. Arencibia.
Following his breakout 2011 campaign, Romero battled through injuries and made every scheduled start during the 2012 season. He finished with a career-worst 5.77 ERA in 32 starts for the Blue Jays. It was eventually revealed that Romero pitched with torn quads in both his legs.
He was never the same and made his last Major League appearance on September 25th 2013 as a September call-up and pitched out of the bullpen.
The lefty spent 2014 with the Buffalo Bisons and the Blue Jays released him in April of 2015. He signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants in May of 2015 and started games in the Arizona Fall League and the Giants Triple-A affiliate in 2016 in 2017.
After his release from the Giants, the lefty spent some time in the Mexican League, pitching 12 games for the Toros de Tijuana. That was the very last time he stepped off the mound in a competitive capacity.
When I think back on Romero’s career in Toronto, I’ll remember him as one of the best left-handed starters to wear a Blue Jays uniform. His rise was meteoric and his fall was unexpected and dramatic, but people in Toronto won’t soon forget the name “Romero”.
In fact, he’ll be one of the official alumni players appearing at Blue Jays Winter Fest on January 19th and 20th.

The former Jays instructing kids at the camp include Jesse Barfield, Lloyd Moseby, Duane Ward, Homer Bush, J.P. Arencibia, and Tanyon Sturtze.
“For me, it’s paying it forward,” said J.P. Arencibia. “I was a kid in these camps. I was one of the these kids. My mom was taking me to camps and I was able to be around major leaguers and it meant the world to me.”
Arencibia says he realized that the Blue Jays are not just Toronto’s team, but Canada’s team in the eyes of many, so he jumped at the chance to participate in this camp.
“Yeah, I want to give back,” he said.
The camps are being held across the country and kids aged nine to 16 are able to participate. They rotate through various drills covering skills like hitting, throwing, fielding, pitching, and base-running.
The highlight of course is kids get to learn from alumni.

The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry Splits From Husband J.P. Arencibia After 4 Years of Marriage
The Band Perry singer Kimberly Perry and her husband, former MLB player J.P. Arencibia, are calling it quits after four years of marriage.
The singer confirmed the news in a post on her Instagram account on Sunday. People reports that Perry filed for divorce in Greeneville, Tennessee, on Friday, citing irreconcilable differences.
“Yes, sadly it’s true, my marriage has come to an end,” the 34-year-old singer wrote in her Instagram post. “I know that beauty will come from these ashes and, as always, I want to thank you all for your love and support. I’ll be in touch soon.”
A post shared by Kimberly Perry (@thekimberlyperry) on Mar 4, 2018 at 6:10pm PST
Arencibia, who played professional baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays before announcing his retirement in January 2017, also seemed to post about the split on social media, tweeting a reference to Bob Marley’s song "Three Little Birds," with the caption,"All good. Half full mentality."

Perry got engaged to the baseball star in September 2013, and the pair were married on June 12, 2014, at a star-studded ceremony that featured the singer’s brothers and bandmates, Reid and Neil Perry, as her best men. Attendees included Carrie Underwood and husband Mike Fisher, as well as then-couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert.
