The #9 Best Episode of the 2012 Series
Written by: Joshua Sternin & J.R. Ventimilia
Directed by: Juan Jose Meza-Leon
COUNTDOWN TO THE NEW TMNT SERIES: TMNT 2012 S1E9 (#9) “The Gauntlet” Analysis
This is an episode more recognizable for its significance than its quality. Still, it’s hard to deny how good the episode still is despite how much is going on. There’s the queer introduction of Pigeon Pete, the introduction of Donnie’s smoke bombs, the discovery and infiltration of the Kraang base, disarming the mutagen bomb, the subtle build up to the mutations of Xever and Bradford (the latter should’ve had repercussions due to his alleged fame in this universe), and then the very first battle against the Shredder. That’s a lot to cover in 23 minutes and a lot of credit must be given to both director Juan Jose Meza-Leon’s pacing along with the selective and meticulous editing that keeps this episode from feeling overstuffed (are you listening “Infinity War?”)
It also helps that this entry has some of the best collective dialogue in the series as well as some of its best handled action sequences. Obviously, the first meeting of the Shredder is one of the most important and anticipated moments in the history of this franchise since all of them have been very memorable, whether it’d be the first (and at the time only) issue, the original 1990 movie, 2003′s “The Shredder Strikes”, or this particular episode (especially so since it was Nickelodeon’s first foray since buying the franchise). Everything is handled with astute attention to detail from the quick and frantic pacing (indeed there’s a sense that if another attempted hit on Shredder from another turtle wasn’t made after one he had just landed then that the previous turtle would’ve been dead), to the inventive use of their weapons (see Mikey using his kusuragami as a mast), the vivid and almost life-like sparks, to the incorporation of the Mirage style panels, it’s a sight that is deserving of its anticipation.
You just saw me rank “The Gauntlet” among the best episodes of the series. To express your approval, feel free to share, like, reblog, and/or comment. If you disagree, reblog and/or comment to bite back. Mad Scientist out.

Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rise of the Turtles
Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rise of the Turtles is a book adaptation of the TV show currently on Nickelodeon. It is designed to introduce readers to the turtles, develop their backstory, and hopefully create new viewers of the show.
