7th April 1767 saw the birth in Torphichen of Henry Bell.
Not a well known name to many but Bell would make his name by building the the paddle steamer PS Comet and, in 1812, using it to run Europe’s first commercially viable passenger steamboat service on the River Clyde.
Bell was educated in the local Parish school at Torphichen his family were well known at the time as millwrights, builders and engineers.
After schooling he spent time learning trades as a stonemason, Millwright and Model ship modeler, he was something of a visionary and a jack of all trades, it was another trade, engineering that he ended up excelling.
He became fascinated by the then experimental technology and potential of steam propelled ships. He corresponded with and may have assisted the American steamship pioneer Robert Fulton who, in 1807, introduced a steamboat service in New York. However, Bell failed to persuade the Admiralty to take any interest in his ideas about steam propulsion. While continuing to experiment and speculate, he and his wife moved in 1807 to Helensburgh where they ran an inn and superintended the public baths.
He must have been bored for as well as doing the two jobs in Helensburgh Henry was still tinkering with his steam engines, and he commissioned a Port Glasgow shipbuilder to build a 30-ton wooden paddle steamer with a 3hp engine. He named her Comet after a spectacular comet that had appeared the previous year. In August 1812, after a trial voyage from Port Glasgow to the Broomielaw and then back down to Greenock, during which the boat made 5 knots against a headwind and dramatically cut the usual journey time, Bell inaugurated a regular passenger service between Glasgow, Greenock and Helensburgh. No longer did ferries need to be so dependent upon wind and tide. This was the first commercial steam passenger service in Europe.
Lengthened and improved, the Comet then ran a service to Oban and Fort William via the Crinan Canal, but in 1820 she was shipwrecked off Oban. A successor Comet sank after a collision with considerable loss of life. Bell’s pioneering venture was soon superseded technically and eclipsed by rivals but he had shown the way.
Bell was not a successful businessman and ended his days in poverty, dependent upon a public subscription on his behalf, supported by Thomas Telford among others, and an annual stipend from the trustees of the Clyde Navigation.
He died in aged 62 and is buried in Rhu Kirkyard at Gare Loch, Argyll and Bute, a grand statue of him marks his tomb, there is also an Obolisk monument to Henry Bell on the Clyde at Helensburgh where there is also a JD Wetherspoon bar.

The Big Nancy Roundup
Apologies for the delay in posting - I recently traveled to Nancy, France for work and hadn't had time to write up about the food experiences I'd had since my last blog entry. Here's a quick summary of what I've had recently to the best of my memory:
JD Wetherspoon, The Bank Statement (Swansea, Wales)

I had heard a lot about the Spoons breakfast from friends, but never got around to trying it - that was rectified in anticipation of my day out at the Big Queer Picnic in Cardiff. I found their breakfast muffin quite generous and filling considering how cheap it was, and it was very tasty. The unlimited hot chocolate that came with it was also delicious (and clearly made with milk and not water!). The breakfast is simple and no-frills, as you would expect with Spoons, but the value simply can't be beat here.
No Sign Wine Bar (Swansea, Wales)

My friends and I had dinner and drinks at the No Sign Wine Bar in the Swansea city centre, and I had the Summer Punch (a delightfully fruity cocktail with Midori and a blend of juices) as well as the chocolate-orange flavoured "alcochoc" (a hot chocolate with Grand Marnier). I'm personally not inclined to finish my dinner with a hot drink but really enjoyed the hot chocolate.
McDonald's (Nancy, France)

I only include my stop at McDonald's here to illustrate how paltry the UK McFlurry is in comparison to the McFlurry in France and America.
Le Capri (Nancy, France)

Without question the culinary highlight of my trip out to Nancy. I thoroughly enjoyed the Apple Sweet cocktail (vodka, raspberry liqueur, pineapple and apple juices, peach syrup, and lime), which was light and refreshing. The steak was very tender, with an interesting chimmichurri sauce as well. The most interesting part of my meal was the dessert - a mirabelle plum-flavoured sorbet. It's quite an unusual taste (at least from my perspective), not quite citrusy but slightly tart. The straight liqueur at the bottom was a surprise!
Brasserie L'Excelsior (Nancy, France)

This was interesting - the main was a grilled leg of lamb, paired with an aubergine topped with mozzarella and tomato. I'm not keen on aubergine, but the lamb was decent. Not my favourite meal from this trip, but I was pleased I got to try specifically-French cuisine. The dessert was excellent, though - Crepes Suzette, flambéed tableside. Very strong orange liqueur flavours, so not for those averse to alcoholic tastes, but a real treat to have.
Honey Coffee and Food (Nancy, France)

I had to cap off my trip to France with a sample of the French toast. Probably my least favourite meal, though, as it was far too sweet for my taste buds. The spiced hot chocolate was very sumptuous, however (and the signature on the foam was a nice touch).
Lefevre Limoine (Nancy, France)

A few souvenirs as well - the unexpected hit here is the Bergamottes de Nancy, a citrus-flavoured hard candy that originates from the region. My friend describes the taste as "perfumey", which is strangely apt. It's grown on me quite a bit.

JD Wetherspoon reports increased sales amid sunny weather
Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out…

This is why the letter from Wetherspoons in response to the EHRC guidance dropped at 8pm Friday 25th April 2025, which guidance ruled that trans women should use men's toilets, trans men use women's toilets, or if that seemed inconvenient, a business was free to decide that trans people could only use access toilets (family/disability toilets, which are mixed-gender) and not use single-sex toilets at all. Wetherspoons is a huge chain of British pubs which provide reliably-mediocre food and beer, employ people on shitty zero-hours contracts, and the owner of the chain supported Brexit.
But they do always have large clean toilets and they are used in a lot of small towns as a reliable meeting place for LGBT social groups, because they're reliably mediocre in all ways, including customer service. You're not going to get thrown out of a Wetherspoons pub for being openly queer.

The letter says:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us.
As company, we do not tolerate discrimination in any form. It is our aim that our pubs are welcoming and safe places for all. It is important to note that anyone who proposes to, starts or has completed a process of gender reassignment is protected from discrimination under the Equality Act. In accordance with these requirements, any transgender person is entitled to use any toilet they feel most comfortable using whether that be male, female, or access toilets. In any case, we would expect all customers to lock the toilet cubicle door for their own privacy and in consideration of all customers using the toilet facilities. Thank you again for contacting us. Many thanks,
Wetherspoon Customer Services JD Wetherspoon PLC
Judging by this: barometer set fair.
the rapid disintegration of rainbow capitalism pretty much encapsulates the problem with rainbow capitalism in the first place: it is and always was performative fair-weather allyship that evaporated in the face of any real political pressure

Saving Britainҳ Pubs: How Business Loans Can Revitalise Our Beloved Local Institutions
Saving Britain’s Pubs: How Business Loans Can Revitalise Our Beloved Local Institutions
Preserving the Heart of British Culture Amidst Challenges
Did you know that almost 300 pubs closed last year in the UK? Our cherished pubs, the very heart of British social life, are facing unprecedented challenges. From the impact of ‘Dry January’ on pub culture to the rising costs squeezing margins, publicans are under immense pressure.
The Plight of the British Pub
Recent headlines paint a concerning picture:
“Lucky Saint founder: Don’t let ‘Dry January’ dull Britain’s pub culture”
“Fun-police Labour are waging a war on pubs”
JD Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin calls on Starmer to reduce pub taxes”
“Britain’s independent brewers hit record turnover as small firms flounder”
“Government implements alcohol tax reliefs but critics say it’s not enough”
The combination of increasing operational costs, changing consumer habits, and insufficient governmental support has left many publicans wondering how to keep their doors open.
Why Financial Support is Crucial Now
Getting cash owed to you is more vital than ever. With the current economic climate, maintaining a healthy cash flow can make the difference between thriving and closing down. Business loans offer a lifeline, providing much-needed capital to manage expenses, invest in renovations, or launch new marketing initiatives to attract patrons.

Is a Business Loan Right for Your Pub?
If your pub could use a boost—perhaps to manage cash flow, seize new opportunities, or bridge a tough period—an unsecured business loan might be the answer. Many lenders require some trading history, and typically at least one business owner should own a home. But don’t worry if you’re unsure: during our initial consultation, we’ll let you know about all possible funding routes. In some cases, for instance, asset finance might be a better option than a loan.
