For those of you who have been following La Poem, Phantom Singer season 3 winner, I am sure you are already counting (or maybe collecting) their albums since their debut, Scene #1. This famous crossover quartet is going full blast and nothing seems to stop them in the music stage—alternating album recordings, tv and radio guestings, concerts, fan meetings, and many more.

I have not posted about their music after their first mini album, so I think this video will somehow give you a quick rundown of some of the songs they have released since 2021. Included in the song list are IVE's Love Dive which they sang in their Live Clip video, and Sunmi's Purple Night (Pporappippam) in JTBC's Hidden Singer 7.

I love the format Dingo Music's Killing Voice does to each guest artist. Aside from their live vocals, the flow of music almost mimics an actual album—something I enjoy. They also show the song titles plus the album/year, and lyrics. La Poem's Killing Voice performance was recorded about a year ago, so their songs from their Poetry, Poetry, Poem (October 2023), and their latest single album, Mirror (April 2024) are not included. Hello Everyone!

Today I will write about a slightly different topic than before. So far I have presented series, but now I will talk about a musical group called Forestella.

Forestella is a South Korean crossover male vocal quartet. The group was formed in 2017 through JTBC's singing contest Phantom Singer season 2. They were the winners of that season and became the most famous quartet throughout the whole show (3 seasons + All Stars). Sadly, I haven't seen their season yet, as English subtitles are not available anywhere but I will watch it either way, after finishing season 1 (which I stopped watching, because that too, only had English subs in the first half of the episodes). Since August 1, 2021, they've been under Beat Interactive, along with the K-pop band A.C.E, who I'm also a fan of.

As you can guess, the group consists of four members: Bae Doo-hoon (배두훈, tenor, 36), Kang Hyung-ho (강형호, countertenor, 33), Cho Min-gyu (조민규, tenor, 31) and Ko Woo-rim (고우림, bass, 27). Woorim and Mingyu are opera singers and the latter is the leader of the quartet. Doohoon is a musical actor, he studied acting at Korea National University of Arts. Hyungho is probably the most well-known of the four, the video of him singing both Christine's and the Phantom's part in the song Phantom of the Opera really blew up, many international youtubers have reacted to it. It's also worthy of note, that he hadn’t studied music before going on Phantom Singer, showing that he really has a natural talent for singing. He’s an amateur rock singer, who used to work as a chemist.

The name Forestella comes from two words: forest and stella (Italian for star). The Italian touch really comes in handy when we think about how many languages Forestella has sung in. They mostly sing in Korean, Italian and English, but songs in French, Spanish and other languages are found in their discography too. They currently have four albums; Evolution, Mystique, The Forestella and The Beginning: World Tree.

Forestella has appeared on Two Yoo Project and Immortal Songs, a competition where each episode features singers or bands who perform their reinterpreted versions of (older) songs. Currently, they are filming their youtube series called Forrecipe In The Woods.

In my opinion, Forestella is 100% worth to stan. I'm pretty open-minded about music, so I gladly listen to classical songs, but this group was the one that made me really interested in opera pieces. The members have fun personalities too, and they might be the most talented musicians I have ever known.

looking back and finding out all my music survival show obsessions this year are all from jtbc.....hate their region locking on youtube but their shows are too good so of course i have to make an extra long text post about them

i watched them all on ondemandkorea (sadly no english subs but you might be able to find subbed youtube clips or fansubs around if you need/want them!) but i think that website isn’t available globally so i won’t link to it in this post, you can search for the shows to see if they are available on whatever websites you usually use to watch kshows~

and because i’m feeling extra insane i made this already long post into an even longer google doc with every mentioned performers social medias linked (this was a pain in the ass to do but we have to give the free promo) and added extra stories and a few facts about them from the show or just from fan interactions: google doc here (best viewed on desktop, mobile google docs just is not pretty...)

the show started airing in 2020 but it didn’t finish until february of this year so i think it should count ok 2 months into the year is good enough!! the show provides a platform for singers who fell out of stardom or those that never broke through to “sing again” basically, but anonymously! so you won’t know their names until they are either eliminated or reach the finals (or you go on social media and see fans figuring it out)

but honestly....the show format is whatever to me, the singers carried it, so idk if i will watch season 2 in it’s full glory but i'll try and keep up with the youtube clips instead

i don’t want to repeat contestants but to just make this a nice number at 5 (small spoiler ahead): i also like lee seung yoon’s audition stage honey (orig. jyp) and his finals stage water (orig. lee juck)

during the show i was invested mainly into han seung yun, seo young ju, and lee seung yoon just right after them but after the show ended i revisited seung yoon’s stages more so....more promo time!!

lee seung yoon does actively release music, you can search for him on youtube/any music platform under his own name or his band alary kansion, other stages/songs i like from him off of the show: open your textbook, gainism, hero collector, amor fati (orig. kim yeonja), it’s art (orig. psy), literally if you like his voice all his covers are nice

seo young ju releases music with his band nerd connection, they formed back when they were all studying engineering at yonsei (well technically not all of them, the drummer is/was a taekwondo instructor), i listen to them often! they have songs both in korean and english, i’d rec: i’ll just walk, odds, back in the time, waterfall, you can also watch their full i’m live episode! it has on screen lyrics and english subs for all korean lyrics and any small talking ments they have 

han seung yun has not released any new music, at least none that i know of? he did sing a new ost, winners, for the drama police university and you can check his youtube channel for vlogs and other things

phantom singer all star

i have so much to say here but...long story short, i basically fell into a gigantic classical crossover groups hole (you can read the longer ver on the google doc)

phantom singer all star showcases friendly competition and collabs between the top 3 groups of seasons 1 through 3 so if you’re like me and want to know them beforehand, i’d rec going back and watching the actual seasons first, but if you don’t care tbh you can just watch all stars it’s fun!

if you like musicals or are into musical actors i think you’d enjoy this type of music/show, along with the classical singers there are also musical actors on the show too! the show has singers of all ranges from countertenors to bass - most of the singers on the show are classically trained even if they don’t work as classical singers atm

kang hyungho - not musically trained, his day job was a research chemist which he finally was able to quit 2 years ago, in the group he sings tenor to countertenor range, he also releases solo music under the stage name PITTA, stylistically his music is dreamy and rock influenced

ko woorim - bass

they recently signed to beat interactive, the same company that manages kpop group a.c.e! (i hope they have interactions in the future i know members of a.c.e are enlisting right now and forestella are old men except for woorim /jk/ but a girl can dream) the best part is this means now they have an active idol-esque twitter and youtube channel that gets subbed videos (kinda), before this i used to watch from this fan youtube channel who makes fun videos for them and they are subbed so if you want to see cuts from their talks from older vlives/concert ments/etc this is a good place to start (personally i think they’re hilarious mingyu is so funny to me ajsdhfjkdsf)

other performances from them i’d rec including a few more from all stars as well: their most famous bohemian rhapsody (orig. queen) stage, my favorite things (orig. from the sound of music), scarborough fair (orig. simon and garfunkel), the sound of silence (orig. simon and garfunkel), 달팽이 (orig. panic), time in a bottle (orig. jim croce), and je suis malade (orig. serge lama though they're covering the lara fabian ver.) they also did a korean remake for the song!

also bonus rec, the song that made top 10 on my spotify wrapped this year: mingyu and woorim sang this during phantom singer season 2 and it’s one of my favorite stages...it’s l’immensita (orig. don backy), forestella actually performed this as 4 but i'm in love with woorim’s voice on this song so i listen to their duet more....plus it comes with a funny behind the scenes story that they told at one of their concerts (tl;dw it involves a huge fly that made the song turn into a try not to laugh challenge for woorim and yes apparently you can see it in the official performance sajfhkdsjkf)

superband 2

superband...my beloved show from 2019 (i would STILL recommend watching this tbh it’s probably my favorite music survival show ever) well, it finally got a new season this year and we all know how i feel about it...if you don’t know maybe you don’t actually follow me bc i talked and posted at least once every 2 weeks about it while it was airing or you were clearly blessed enough to miss all of it

basically tl;dr for all my meltdowns: it was a love hate relationship, i’d recommend it for the musicians on the show but compared to season 1 the producers/judges were way too pushy with their “vision” for me to be 110% invested like i used to, it takes the magic away and i feel like this is what happens sometimes when the first season takes off really well...the upcoming season(s) end up having a little capitalistic flair to it which is really uncool (also adds to the reason why i’m hesitant to watch sing again s2) 

that said i would still watch another season of this show, i love the (original) idea of this show and the contestants are consistently good so i’d only stop if producing gets unbearable which reminds me i never told you what the show is actually about lol it’s title tells you basically! the show’s goal is to bring together different musicians and singers to create a “global super band”

honorable mention: kitak’s team - boomerang (orig. imagine dragons), it’s not really a favorite so i hesitated to include it but i do like it more after the show ended and the guitar just sounds so sexy here

lied to myself because i thought i wouldn’t have much to promo afterwards...i’ll just link 3 singers who released solo music before the show:

demian, i’d rec all his songs he doesn’t have that many so you can listen to all of them! you can start with his debut song ‘cassette’ which was one of my top songs in 2020, he also makes vlogs you can find them all on his youtube they are all subbed and he speaks english fairly well

kitak, he also...does not have many songs so you can listen to them all again lol but my favorite song is ‘raining’! if you like those “coffee shop kpop playlists” i think you’d enjoy his type of music, it’s very soft

yeji, ok truthfully i don’t listen to her solo stuff often, i adore her voice but just don’t find myself listening to her songs ;;; but you guys might like them! i’d start off with ‘scared’, she was on the voice korea before this show (she started her solo career after appearing on the voice) i’d rec all of her stages there like tomboy (orig. hyukoh), 골목길 (orig. kim hyunsik), this one is a duet stage: 걷고 싶다 (orig. cho yongpil)

during the show my top 4 were demian, yej, jeongho, haeun but to name more nokdu, eunchul, dawool are also favorites of mine~ fast forward to the end of the show out of the 6 final bands, kardi is my on paper favorite band i would pay to see them multiple times in concert if i could but i also like craxilver’s music style too! and i post about cnema a lot....their kfan twitter community is actually the most fun to browse through imo sjahfdjskf

La Poem's first fan meeting sold out at high speed

The first fan meeting of group LA POEM was sold out very quickly.

Rapoem (Park Ki-hoon, Yoo Chae-hoon, Jung Min-seong, Choi Seong-hoon) will hold the first fan meeting '2022 Lapoem Vision Proclamation Ceremony' at YES24 LIVE HALL, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul over two days on July 2 and 3, Ticket reservations were open through Yes24 from 8pm on the 10th.

The '2022 Lapoem Vision Proclamation Ceremony' is the first solo fan meeting held by Lapoem in two years since their debut, and the fans' support poured in along with the news of the fan meeting. As if to prove their passionate interest, the fan meeting sold out at the same time as the opening of the reservation, proving the powerful ticket power.

Like the title of 'Vision Proclamation Ceremony', this fan meeting was prepared as a place to draw together the blueprints of RAPOEM from the past to the future, with the fans who have made the history of RAPOEM as shareholders.

#PSHnews 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards Honors Film And TV Extras In Heartwarming Performance The 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards were held on May 3 and one moment stood out to many of the actors who were there. The concept of this year’s ceremony was “Healing,” containing a message of hope for everyone to forget the painful and hard times and start again. Befitting of the concept, the awards ceremony prepared a special stage for the last performance of the first half of the event. Forte Di Quattro, the winning team from JTBC’s “Phantom Singer,” was joined on stage by 33 extras who have appeared in movies and dramas to perform Seo Young Eun’s “Dreaming.” The performance gave these actors the opportunity to be in the spotlight for the first time. La segunda alineación repleta de artistas fue revelada para Someday Festival 2020

Someday Festival 2020 es un festival de música al aire libre que tendrá lugar en el Parque Nanji Hangang en Seúl los días 5 y 6 de septiembre.

Los artistas en la alineación anunciada el 20 de julio incluyen a Baekhyun de EXO, AKMU, Eunkwang de BTOB, Soran, Ha Sung Woon, Park Moon Chi y muchos más.

Los artistas anunciados en la primera formación unos días antes incluía a Jang Beom June, Crush, Kim Feel, Peppertones, Changmo y Cheeze, así como a La Poem, el equipo ganador de “Phantom Singer 3” de JTBC.

Anteriormente, los representantes del festival comentaron: “Pensamos que ahora más que nunca, este sería un momento en que la gente más necesita la felicidad que trae la música”. Al señalar la actual pandemia COVID-19, aseguraron: “Tomaremos medidas exhaustivas para asegurar de que la seguridad de la audiencia siga siendo nuestra principal prioridad”.

La Poem Conquers Crossover Music (An Overdue Introduction)

Just when I thought the likes of Il Divo is old, came South Korea’s newest crossover quartet, La Poem.  As the winner of JTBC’s Phantom Singer 3, the group is set to conquer crossover music anew. This introduction is way behind, my apologies for getting hooked with the show lately, as it ended last July.

La Poem is a combination of La Bohème and the word, poem. The winning quartet is the first crossover group in the world with a countertenor.  I think it’s also the first in their country, if I’m not mistaken, with all members having classical/formal voice education up their sleeves.  Here are the voices behind the quartet:

Yoo Chae-Hoon, 32 (tenor)

The Hanyang University alumnus stands as the big brother/leader of La Poem, and labels himself as the Legendary Tenor. He was seen on stage and in television shows, but being part of the winning quartet is his major break to prove his innate passion in singing.

Choi Sung-Hoon, 31 (countertenor)

Some say he is the voice the world couldn’t find.  After earning a degree in Korea National University of Arts, he further studied in France then moved to Switzerland for his master’s degree. He has been active as an opera singer in Europe before auditioning for Phantom Singer. And did I mention he is La Poem’s Mascot!!

Jeong Min-Seong, 29 (baritone)

The self-confessed “cute” baritone (hehe, I do agree!) was in Germany for his graduate studies when he auditioned for Phantom Singer.  He did hope to become part of the winning quartet, knowing the title can help him unfold a new chapter in his singing career.  He is also generous to inject humor in the group especially with his imitiation of Doraemon’s speaking voice!  Seriously, Min-Seong has the tenderness in his voice that endears him to the audience, and is known as the voice that completes La Poem.

Park Ki-Hun, 26 (tenor)

As another tenor in the group, he is distinguished as the Fiery Tenor or simply put, the Flame Tenor. I’m sure you’ll know why!  The smallest and the youngest member, but not when it comes to vocal power, confidently sang the popular Nessun Dorma during the show’s solo preliminary round and earned the nod of one of the judges, the classical pianist, Ji-Yong. The introverted Ki-Hun can also be funny and is sure to create a lighter mood among the group.

La Poem has finished its numerous Phantom Singer 3 concert tours and just recently capped off a classical performance in Seoul Arts Center. It is set to take-off with a new album come December.

La Poem Breathes a New Meaning to a Wonderful Song

Here’s La Poem’s awesome rendition of Lee Hi’s song entitled, Breathe. The quartet sang this during the first round in Phantom Singer All-Star Match held recently.  

They perfectly captured the right emotions for this song. It’s a beautiful piece all right, but here - La Poem gave a new meaning to it.

Here is Luna as performed by Go Hoon-Jung, You Chaehoon, Choi Sunghoon and Kim Paul. As one of the finale songs for Phantom Singer All-Stars, Luna was the song choice for Season 1 trio round by Go Hoon-Jung, Lee Dong-Shin and Lee Jun-Hwan in 2016.  

This song is on-repeat now because.....I’m speechless! 

I just love how You Chaehoon and Choi Sunghoon soared at 2:08.  Chaehoon at 3:17 followed by the flaming Hoon-Jung! Hoooh!  And as if not enough, Chaehoon released his powerful leggero tenor vocals at 3:46 drawing fist pounds and thumps on the table from fellow Phantom Singers!  What’s more, his ascending notes at 4:07 should not be missed. Listen to this song in its entirety especially in the first 33 seconds where Sunghoon hummed like a divine being, and at the end which is an impressive melodious chant!

This performance includes bass singer Kim Paul whose tender voice complements perfectly well with the three solid-voiced singers.

my superband 2 thoughts

there's format spoilers in this post but i'll try not to talk about actual results just kinda want to spitball a little so this is gonna be long and incoherent

also i never know how many performances i want to post bc it's always hard picking too unless i really like a stage, but once i figure out i'll post more 😋

very first thing: WHERE ARE THE BASSISTS??? AGAIN??? omg this show either repels bassists like crazy or the judges are not passing them but if it's the judges fault then why? last season there was only 4 out of the 53 people they passed and a lot of contestants had to learn how to play bass during the show bc there was just not enough bass players and apparently they're kinda needed? who would've thought right?! (sarcasm) the only good thing that came out of it was that all 4 bassist made it to the final rounds but like yea that just shows that they're wanted in a band and would've been helpful if there were more bass players to begin with

anyways this season they decided to pass 5 bassists out of 53...is it really an improvement (no it's not) so.....who has to learn bass this time around or are we adapting to somehow not need one

moving on to just jtbc things the episode length for this season increased a lot compared to season 1 but why do i feel like i'm not actually seeing more? like it must have mostly went into giving the judges more talking/review time or something

the first round this time also features something new where they have specified genres that teams can pick from unlike season 1 where they could just pick whatever they wanted from the beginning

i don't really know how i feel about this lol bc it seemed like they told the contestants this "feature" after they already picked their groups? so like clearly the groups where formed with an image in mind but some teams if they're unlucky could end up picking from leftover genres (or quite literally be left with the genre no one wanted to pick) that does not suit the style they originally planned to do (like you know...when they formed the team...without knowing...they didn't get the freedom to do any genre they wanted)

the idea of it is fine, they did a similar thing on phantom singer and it gives the contestants a round to (forcefully lol) explore genres they might not have thought about doing and also gives the audience more song variety to enjoy but i think they should've mentioned that or showed the board of genres beforehand so the frontmans knew they might have to be a little flexible, like maybe the teams wouldn't have been different at all since people have clear preferences for who they want to work with, but like just to have that extra knowledge u know?

that's basically the only thing that slightly bugged me lol but probably the next round they'll go back to open ended so i'm interested to get to see what type of music the teams would actually pick without any restrictions (or even originals! bc first round of s1 already had teams making their own music)

and this is just personal, but i feel the judging atmosphere of this season is not as good as last season...like bc last time it was a new show, no one really had expectations, everything was a surprise and free flowing but i feel in superband 2 the judges have certain expectations now and they seem to be more actively...looking...for something specific....overall the atmosphere for me just feels different and tbh i think it's making it harder for me to connect like i did in s1 but i still like the show a lot and will keep watching ofc

i'm sure it'll get better (maybe not the judges part safkjhsdkf) but like overall, when the contestants get to know each other more and work with more people it'll feel more friendly and relaxed again

time for the more fun part instead of me complaining about things, who are my picks right now?

honestly it's so hard asjkfsdf i think i need the next round where they can just play whatever they want so i can understand their music styles

ofc i have the picks that i already know and like from before the show: demian and kim yeji but a few others so far:

jang haeun, she plays classical guitar and she's just so lovely

danny koo, i just like violinists and his energy is infectious asfkjds

byun jeongho, bassist who is literally my pinned

valo, a dj and his audition was..so good...it was a remix of schubert's erlkönig

park dawool, geomungo player and he's just so interesting as long as he's on the show i think i'll always be curious about his stages

yoon hyunsang, vibraphone but i think he connects it to some electronic pad (idk what it's actually called) so it can make other various sounds like literally dj vibraphone

jung nayoung, electric guitar...she's just cool and i was going to post her audition but i ended up not and it's sitting in my drafts ;;;;;

and honorable mention to the band crackshot (all the members passed the audition so good for them), they're like a hard rock/heavy metal band but they're so unapologetically themselves and their friendship is really cute, i don't listen to this genre specifically but it reminds me of my visual kei music era so that's so fun

that's all for now i think, i usually don't have a big preference for drums bc i'm dumb and cannot tell the difference enough for me to have a favorite, and lowkey same for electric guitar..i like all of them but i wanted to put nayoung just because

oddly there's no vocalists yet that i like? other than the 2 i already knew from before the show which is surprising even to me asjhfdksf s1 i liked a lot of vocalists so this is new lol

i think that's all i have to say, eliminations haven't happened yet and i'm just praying they don't eliminate people too quickly, s1 i think only 2 or 3 were eliminated first round which is quite a small amount so pls let this season be the same or i will cry
