New Victoria Theatre, Woking 13/6/22

Where a lot of towns have suffered from Covid, upon returning to the New Victoria Theatre for the first time since the pandemic, Woking has grown to similar heights as to the mysterious, larger-than-life statues placed around the town. Since first attending shows here, I've seen the area expand into more than just the location The Jam were from; with more hospitality establishments cropping up - potentially meeting the demand of the out-of-town visitors to the theatre, and locals wanting to make a night of seeing a show.

Just 25 mins on the train from London Waterloo, or 8 minutes from Guildford, a short walking distance from Woking railway station, outside the theatre, there's now a giant screen set up for the Wimbledon tennis tournament, with oversized deckchairs and equally-size-matched chess sets, next to table tennis and a new reatuarant with outdoor seating, catering for all dietary requirements.

If you're looking for the beauty of a traditional theatre, it may not be found in this 1,300 capacity early '90s, modern build but the magic of what's on stage is not lost in this major touring venue, which may give you a chance to see a show before it even hits the West End ('Derren Brown: Showman' was here last week!).

Tonight is the opening night for the musical of the 1980s' screen sensation 'Footloose'. Billed as a decade defining dance-a-thon, the story is actually more fitting to now; having only just come out of a lockdown where dancing was illegal (and still is, in certain parts of the world).

Stepping into the dancing shoes of Ren McCormack, Joshua Hawkins' enthusiastic energy in the opening title track made him a clear Marty McCfly contender for when Back To The Future tours. With the cast playing all their own instruments on stage for other '80s' era singalongs including 'Out for a Hero', 'Almost Paradise' and 'Let’s Hear It For The Boy', we overheard the punters infront of us complaining that the already-over-exaggerated American dialect could not be heard over the band. They were mute during most of the obvious comedy cliches though, which were met with silence from the audience, where laughter should have been to break away from the deeper and darker storyline, running underneath.

With half of the on-stage-chemistry between the two young leads being owed to Lucy Munden (Ariel), their talent was complimented by good, all round performances from Darren Day (her on-stage father, Rev) and Ben Mabberley (Willard, in Jake Quickenden's abscene) - whose character's growing confidence in dancing and girlfriend, Rusty, was a delight for the whole auditorium.
